The BFI Screening will have Peter Purves for the Q&A

“We are delighted that Peter Purves will be joining for us for a Q&A after the screening. Peter will also be taking part in a paid-for signing following the event on the BFI Mezzanine floor outside the Blue Room.”

I hope I can get him to sign my VHS Copy, though how much would he be charging though? No info on that.

Not sure if I’m the first one to spot it/notice it or not but just found this German/Dutch site link that has a potential release date for this set.

    https://bluray-disc.de/blu-ray-filme/175191-doctor_who_the_collection_season_2_limited_edition_packaging_uk_import_ohne_dt_ton

    It says Publication/Release date 05/12/2022.

Obviously nothing official confirmed yet but these sites always seem to get it right or very very close to it.

Does this mean we could see a late November/Early December release for this set?

Those sites do tend to be pretty accurate a lot of the time with release dates on these sets, i think they have had a couple previously where the dates turned out to be incorrect (S22 possibly)

I like how its edited to make it seem that they have watched more but how can they diss or praise something at the end when they have been watching clips. The story cant have made much sense to them viewing it from that perspective. They arent judging it as a whole.

      Why?

    • Prowl 1701

      October 13th, 2022 - 7:12am

Probably because of the sheer number of stories this season. Probably would have taken a lot of the BtS crew’s time to watch it all.

      October 13th, 2022 - 7:31am

Sad news but I guess this was inevitable

    • Prowl 1701

      October 13th, 2022 - 8:13am

Season2 has 9 stories, that would probably, even with cutdowns), be a lot for them to have to sit through in a day. I think the biggest sets before this only had 7 stories at most in a season?

    • Gordon

      October 13th, 2022 - 1:34pm

I guess getting them to do 9 behind the sofa’s in one day isn’t possible when you take into account breaks and everything. If there were to skip some crusade is a pretty obvious skip. None of the surviving cast members remember anything of giants so that’s another easy decision to skip. As for space museum episode 1 is great but episodes 2-4 are so uneventful it might be a struggle to cut it to 45 mins which is the length of behind the sofas that the cast watch

    • The ergon

      October 13th, 2022 - 2:45pm

Actually Gordon. It was a question i was going to put to Peter Davison this weekend. How much of each of these stories running time they all viewed on behind the sofa. I Guessed they might watch around 45 -55 mins of story highlights of a 1 hour 40 story before all the edits.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      October 13th, 2022 - 6:05pm

No problems with that Planet of Giants and The space museum are dreadful, Crusade is a classic but half is missing so makes sense

    • Bobby Fackrell

      October 13th, 2022 - 7:18pm

The Ergon I might be wong but I’m pretty sure it’s everything you see on the Behind the Sofa episodes, they just watch clips which is why a few stories omitted from series two isn’t a major problem as they never watch the full series anyway

    • The ergon

      October 13th, 2022 - 7:37pm

I like how its edited to make it seem that they have watched more but how can they diss or praise something at the end when they have been watching clips. The story cant have made much sense to them viewing it from that perspective. They arent judging it as a whole.

      October 14th, 2022 - 1:42am

The point of the behind the sofas is that they react to what they are shown. Whether it’s 50 mins or 100 mins it doesn’t matter that it’s the full thing or not. Sure it’s nice to hear whether or not janet fielding liked attack of the cybermen but that isn’t the point.

    • Gordon

      October 10th, 2022 - 8:48am

That’s what I’m thinking. The biography that he’s filming has got to be someone big in the doctor who world for it to be deemed as “really important” and when you eliminate 1. Everyone that is alive 2. Everyone that has been covered and 3. Seasons that have been done or won’t be touched for a while (3,4) it’s a not a huge list. Can’t see it being anyone from the 80s. Pretty much all the people that would be deemed as really important are either alive or already covered and that’s nothing against the likes of Richard Hurndall, Maurice Colbourne and Dursley McLinden who may get biography pieces on them. Out of the 70s you have Robert holmes, Graeme Williams and Mary tamm that are big enough that haven’t been covered. There are a few possibilities in the hartnell era but I think it’s too soon for another hartnell. Out of the Troughton era the most likely is Troughton.

      October 10th, 2022 - 10:34am

Mary Tamm was the first person I thought of, but something about the way Chris talked about it made me think of Troughton. Would love a good doc on Mary as well though, she is my preferred Romana.

I see an Amazon reviewer is categorically stating that the crusade episodes have been found and they are on the set. Very silly behaviour and something that could cause some buyers upset if they believe him.

What about the reviewer saying it’s a ‘poor upscale’ when it has not even been released yet!

I think the majority of people don’t pay too much attention to the customer reviews especially when a product has neither been released or had an official review

    • the ergon

      October 4th, 2022 - 7:30pm

And what is an official review? Why believe one persons criticism, just because they don,t like it? Thats just suggesting their views are right and yours are wrong. We are all critics alike.

      October 4th, 2022 - 9:57pm

It’s a rumour I heard from different people. Of course I want to believe it, we’ll know in a few weeks either way, but I’m not holding my breath.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      October 4th, 2022 - 10:58pm

An official review would be from someone who has actually reviewed the product on a preview for the sole purpose of reviewing and who is paid to write the review, usually for a paper or magazine. The Doctor Who magazine review will be an official review. The reviews on Amazon are by people not qualifed and none of them have watched the product yet as it has not been released and probably still being worked on

    • Bobby Fackrell

      October 4th, 2022 - 11:00pm

What’s a rumour? That the episodes have been found?

      They haven’t

    • Gordon

      October 5th, 2022 - 12:58am

If it had been found it would absolutely have a stand alone release first. Bbc studios will want to monetise it as much as possible.Even if they were to include it in a set they would be advertising it being found from the rooftops. I don’t believe for a second it’s been found

    • The ergon

      October 5th, 2022 - 1:17am

Im not basing my opinion on someone who hasnt reviewed the product. Its all subjective. I dont have to agree with everything a critic or reviewer tells me either paid or not. Its just one opinion. And opinions can change over time. Something that may be universally derided now can be lauded years down the line.Does then that ‘official’ review still stand because they say it was. No.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      October 5th, 2022 - 6:18am

I’m not talking about subjectivity or objectively I’m highlighting that the reviews on Amazon are written by people who have not seen the product.

Amazon reviews can be useful if you are apprehensive about buying something like a cheap tin opener and you are concerned about how strong it is but people writing reviews about something that has not been released is ridiculous and should not be allowed. Amazon should only allow verified purchase reviews and after release dates.

    • Anon

      October 5th, 2022 - 8:55am

Definitely agree with you Bobby, far to many false reviews on Amazon. And I agree with ergon in terms of I will always make up my own mind, but people reviewing things before they have seen or read something should be stopped

I don’t know. Just hoping we get season 9 after 2.then probably be season 20. But I don’t know any more than you I guess. Here’s hoping.

    • Gordon

      October 2nd, 2022 - 12:47am

Ever since the bfi screening for time meddler got announced I have suspected that the next announcement won’t be till November 23rd. As I said before there isn’t any animations in the works to announce anything and the steelbook line looks to be finished excluding the current show so it seems like it’s the only thing that could be announcable is a collection set if they were to announce anything disc related.

I do still think it won’t be season 20 seeing as the people who were there at the Amsterdam filming have said they were told it’s not coming till mid 2023. Plenty of time to get a set inbetween. Won’t be 2 black and white sets in a row and I can’t see them doing 2 80’s sets in a row when there is only 3 left. Just leaves a 70s set and we are due a jon more than a Tom and considering some restoration work has been done on season 9 I’m going for 9.

By the sound of things Chris chapman and Richard Bignell are working about 4 sets ahead in terms of documentaries and pdfs. That’s a good thing. Hopefully that means the release schedule can start getting back to normal.

I have a theory for the rest of the classic range. We will have 1 60s 70s and 80s release a year going forward. Pertwee and baker will alternate each year with the only exception being 2027 due to the range ending. Once the 80s are finished 1990-2004 will take its place in 2026 and I feel the range will look something like this.

      2023: season 9/20/6
      2024: season 15/25/1
      2025: season 7/21/5
      2026: season 16/90-04/4
      2027: season 11/3/13

    • Prof Horner

      October 2nd, 2022 - 9:57am

Well that is interesting Gordon. I certainly would be happy to see that schedule. I still hope we get four next year , probably season 9 left over from this year when it should have been released. It interesting you think season 7 may come out before 11. I still think they will be a problem with season 3. It is fun to speculate.

    • Jake E

      October 3rd, 2022 - 10:12am

      Hello,

Gordon what do you mean the Steelbook range is ending? Does that mean the Jodie Series 13 specials Steelbook will be the final one?

      Thanks

    • Richard

      October 4th, 2022 - 10:44am

Hopefully this date is correct. I’m hoping to get this as a Christmas present for myself. My most wanted sets are season 7 and 13 but I guess they will be left until last.

    • D84

      October 4th, 2022 - 11:40am

That’s an interesting change of term there Gordon “1990-2004” – is that what we have been calling a Wilderness Years set? Do we know if that one has had a green light within the range as yet?

    • Rory

      October 4th, 2022 - 12:29pm

Jake E, everything from Capaldi onwards already has a steelbook, and the animations are not continuing, so the only things getting a steelbook from here on would be the new series releases. I don’t think Gordon was suggesting that those would stop, just that there’s nothing else besides the new content

    • Gordon

      October 5th, 2022 - 1:34am

Prof Horner I think the last 2 pertwee releases are pretty much a coin toss at this point. I could see the arguments for either of those to be the last pertwee. On the one hand season 7 needs the most work out of the remaining colour seasons but they are all in colour. On the other hand invasion of the dinosaurs ep 1 is the 1 episode that needs the most work. Leaving that one till last could give it more time to get the colour right.

Jack E I’m sure there will be steelbooks of future seasons that’s why I said excluding the current show it’s just I don’t think there will be any more other steelbooks considering it’s been 18 months since the series 8 steelbook (if we were getting s9 we would have gotten it by now) and the animation range seems done for now

Yes D84 it’s the same thing. Not sure whether or not they will call it wilderness years, 1990-2004 or something else but I’m fairly convinced it will happen. There is already special features that fit perfectly on there. They can also use it to put stuff on there was either not clearable at the time or accidentally left off. Also would be a good home for the studio footage of keeper of traken and four to doomsday that turned up after seasons 18 and 19 were released

  • D84

    September 26th, 2022 - 12:46pm

      Hopefully not 6 months again

Ah yes i had forgotten about the date for the BFI event.

Indeed lets hope this one is not months before it comes out and follows the “usual” pattern of only a few weeks between BFI event and landing on the doorstep.

Anyone got any info on what’s next? possible sightings of trailers being filmed etc?

Seems to be S9 and S20 are certainly close from what we have heard so far – any other contenders?

    • Gordon

      September 27th, 2022 - 1:33am

It should hopefully be November. I’m guessing but I think the next announcement won’t be till late October or sometime November so it might be some time away. Perhaps even 23rd November considering there isn’t any animations or steelbooks to announce on that day by the sounds of things. As for what sets are up I’m still sticking with either 9 or 20. As for any info Chris chapman has a variety of docs in various states:

      Moon Balloon 21 (Troughton in
Tibet) (moon balloon is his production company and 21 is his 21st documentary since starting the moon balloon company)
      MB 22 (Looking for David)
      MB 23 (a making of)
MB 24 (the Location, Location, Location sequel)
      MB 25 (a making of)
      MB 26 (a biography)
      MB 27 (a biography)
      MB 28 (a biography)

Richard Bignell was at the written archive last week scanning pdfs. He said he was finishing off one collection set and starting another as well as gathering information for a documentary and for two other DW projects. six weeks prior he said this visit was to sort out the PDF Archive for the set four releases from now, He also responded to the possibility of getting season 1 next year with I wouldn’t bet on it so I definitely don’t think we are getting season 1 next year

Surely the next four releases will be Seasons 9, 20, 6 and a Tom (not necessarily in that order)?

    • Bobby Fackrell

      September 28th, 2022 - 9:41pm

9 and 20 are strong rumours but 6 is pure speculation, ‘Troughton in Tibet’ suggests 5 to me, I’d love 6 to come out soon mind

    • Anonymous

      September 28th, 2022 - 10:53pm

Troughton in Tibet comes on The Abominable Snowmen set, so isn’t an indicator of which Season sets are in the works.

    • Gordon

      September 29th, 2022 - 12:53am

It’s not an indicator that season 5 is coming soon. One thing we need to bear in mind this list was posted in the middle of august. In the case of Troughton in Tibet and looking for David we know they are on abominable and season 2.

Chris has been posting on twitter again. He’s currently filming a documentary 4 sets down the line. He also says it’s a big one feature length and worth it. I suspect it’s a biography of some sort as there isn’t any era docs left to cover. William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton Robert holmes Graeme Williams or Mary tamm is what I’m thinking that would warrant a feature length doc. Considering the next 2 are quite probably season 9/20 and after that we are probably gettin Tom and pat as the next 2 releases I think it will be from either pat or toms era.

I’m going to guess the list that Chris gave

Mb 21: Troughton in Tibet (abominable)
Mb 22: looking for David (season 2)
MB 23 (a making of) (time monster)
MB 24 (the Location, Location, Location sequel) (season 9)
MB 25 (a making of) (kings demons)
MB 26 (a biography) (richard Hurndall)
MB 27 (a biography) (Graeme Williams or Mary tamm or Robert holmes)
MB 28 (a biography) (Patrick Troughton)

    • Prof Horner

      September 29th, 2022 - 3:30pm

Regarding a future Troughton season on blu ray. I hope it is season 6 , one reason is it’s the earliest Who I can remember and I think they should wait a bit longer for season 5 given several of that season have recently been released as animation. I know that The Space Pirates has no telesnaps , so maybe one way of doing it would be for drawings to represent the missing episodes. After all would it be any different telesnaps that don’t move either? Or maybe it is a silly idea. Anyhow a Pertwee,a Davison, a Tom and hopefully a Troughton next year in that order.

Only last month’s issue was available today in Tescos, Inverurie (the only place I know locally that stocks DWM). Normally the last issue is off the shelf on the publication date of the new issue and, outwith weather problems, the new issue is in place that day.

I wonder if, under the circumstances, release of the issue has been delayed a week. That the issue is available online may not make much difference, as when I’ve (pre-)ordered from the Panini website I’ve found it takes several days for the order to arrive.

      Have subscription copies been arriving?

Bluray or the collectors wont exist at that rate way before it finishes with there been 10+ more releases to go.

5+ more years to finish it.

    • Gordon

      August 28th, 2022 - 10:58pm

      @Thefuture

It’s been a 2 year gap between the limited edition packaged release and the standard packaged release so those dates would be about right. That doesn’t mean it will continue to be 2 releases a year if the number of limited edition collection releases increase. Pretty much all of the releases post season 14 has been effected due to either covid or supply issues due the Ukraine war. That doesn’t mean those issues will continue going forward

    • The ergon

      August 29th, 2022 - 1:08am

However many collectors releases there are in a year we who prefer the standards will always be 2 years+ behind which is why i opted to wait until prices could be found a lot cheaper even if preowned. The coloured seasons here on in however i will probably buy on preorder date and sell on as standards are released

Have to say the idea of recreating the missing 12 seconds seems a bit of a waste to me. Unless you were told a short sequence was missing you would never know. Added to that the sequence doesn’t really effect the story in any way. Time meddler is find as it is. I’m sure it will look better than my DVD but I’m happy with the DVD. At least it won’t deteriorate like the vhs tapes used to! I remember watching stories years after buying them and having to try and replace them as the tape was unwatchable or the machine would decide to shred them! Hope you all enjoy the box set.

I have watched who since 1975 and have to say the seventh doctor and ace are one of my favourite team TARDISes. The two actors just work so well together and it was a joy watching them back in those long ago days. I’m sad there is only one Jodie story left as I’ve loved her time on the show. Looking forward to see what ncuti brings to the role though. If who has taught me anything whilst watching it for the last 47 years it’s to embrace change!

    • Bobby Fackrell

      August 23rd, 2022 - 5:36pm

For me as a kid Ace was my first companion but looking at the whole era through retrospective eyes what a breath of fresh air she was! The 80s were littered with contrived companions that the writers didn’t know what to do with, an Australian, an American, all gimmicks no substance. Bonnie Langford was a celeb casting yet with Ace was the genesis of the character development of companions New Who does all the time. Andrew Cartmel working with his writers who he had good relationships with and really fleshing her out. The Cartmel Masterplan often talks about the development of the darker Doctor but what about ‘The Ace Trilogy’? Series 26 is virtually dedicated to Ace’s journey, inspired stuff, the first companion to really get an arc and paved the way for Roses and Martha’s

    • Bookcollector

      August 23rd, 2022 - 6:43pm

Ace was really the first classic era companion to be developed in any meaningful way. I know what you mean about the 80’s era companions. Nyssa was one I liked but she was sidelined to much then kicked off. Adric was precocious and that was his thing. Tegan was miserable! Turlough was untrustworthy. Kamelion didn’t work bless him, so had to be written out. Peri was a botanist but mainly there for villains to lust after! Mel was decent in her first story and bonnie langford is a good actress but her character was so underdeveloped she might as well not have been there. Of course the 60’s and 70’s companions fared little better in terms of development but I found the 80’s companions less well drawn than those previous ones. So ace was a wonderful breath of fresh air when she arrived. Ooh, I can’t wait to see her back in Jodie’s finale.

Loved the original TARDIS crew, but did prefer Viki to Susan, Ian and Barbara were brilliant.

I liked how they went back to making it a team in the recent series, Ryan was a little weak but loved Yaz and Graham and they moved almost back to pure historicals, they still had some Sci-Fi flavours but heavily historical, Jodie’s first series has a lot of nods to the original first series

    • Bookcollector

      August 23rd, 2022 - 7:52pm

Ian and Barbara are brilliant but yes I do prefer vicki over Susan. I think vicki is very underrated by fans. She’s a good companion in these series two stories. I like Jodie’s first series because it does have those little nods to the original. Back to three companions, historical stories, I just liked it. And as far as I’m concerned she has only gotten better. I’ll be sad to see her go.

I reckon the Jodie historicals would have worked better as actual historicals.

You could cut space racist from Rosa and tell the same story. Demons of the Punjab would probably work better without the pointless aliens.

    • Auton

      August 24th, 2022 - 1:56pm

I agree Rory, Both felt disappointing due to the pointless sci-fi element thrown in. My rule for historicals is if a historical time and place has an historical threat then it should be a pure historical so Rosa and Demons both could easily be pure historicals. A historical should have a sci-fi element if the historical time or place has been done before or it lacks a historical threat. I will admit that I should rewatch some of Jodie’s to see if they are still as bad as I remember so hopefully on rewatch I might actually like at least one of her stories

    • bryan

      August 24th, 2022 - 4:24pm

      Hi Auton and others.

I understand whats your saying. But… every story has to have a reason for being. Ie whats causing the problem with Rosa Parks from happening. If its racists then the Doctor interfering with something thats happened tons of time, she may have been right, and we all think so too. But it leaves the Doctor open to choosing a side. So Add in the Time Agent, and you have a reason for the Dr to fight. To keep fixed points if time fixed. Remove him,and the story needs a new protagonist ,but not anyone on planet earth. A meteor, but that adds sci fi.

Not quite the same with Demons of the Punjab, but similar. The Doctor cant fight one of the groups waging a religious war on other groups. There would be so many complaints, from various groups. Maybe both stories needed to not be there but in my opinion, they stand as some of the best Who stories in the modern Era.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      August 24th, 2022 - 6:15pm

I honestly think Chibnall wanted to do pure historicals that’s the impression I get from those stories but he probably got pressed into adding the Sci-Fi elements or perhaps was not brave enough to go all in it is clear to me he is honouring the original series but he has to try and avoid alienating the younger/newer fans

    • Rory

      August 26th, 2022 - 10:13am

Bobby, I got the same impression. These stories should have been pure historicals, but someone somewhere said, “kids are going to want an alien/villain”. I believe that both would have worked equally well without the sci-fi elements. I mean, The Aztecs is a classic, and the whole justification for the crew’s involvement is that they can’t get to the TARDIS.

I’m still really excited about 2 coming out!

I know it was rumoured for months but there’s something beautiful about seeing it in writing

Well hopefully we will get a preview of season 2 in the next issue of DWM , which should be out on the 13th. Though it maybe put back a week as the last issue was delayed dew to the Queen’s death.

Are they still releasing these as standard editions?
I’ve got all the standard releases, but may buy this and have the b&w seasons as an exception on limited edition releases

Has the interactive DVD list been updated to include the Season 2 boxset?
