Who history.

Producer Phillip Hinchliffe led Doctor Who through a creative high, joined by Elisabeth Sladen as
Sarah Jane Smith, Louise Jameson as the Doctor’s captivating new companion Leela and guests
stars Tim Pigott-Smith, Stephen Thorne, Peter Pratt, Pamela Salem, David Collings, Christopher

DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION – SEASON 14 stars Tom Baker as The Fourth Doctor, Elisabeth

Assasin, played by Peter Pratt. RRP: £56.16

I,ve only seen part 1 of ‘Weng chiang’. I have a 4K TV and had the picture setting on ‘vivid’ as i knew those sewer tunnel scenes were really dark and was anticipating seeing this new version but i found the updated Rat scenes in this particular episode were disappointing as i could barely see it for all its HD glory. I,m going to watch the rest of the episodes later to see if this improves and in different picture modes. The Elizabeth Sladen tribute was particularly moving, what with Sadie and her son who never knew lis and the much talked about last 5 minutes or so when Tom Baker was trying his best to articulate how much her loss meant to him by trying not to break down was almost unbearable to watch.

Agreed I’ve never seen Tom like that before it was heartbreaking

The Ergon, if it helps, I saw the screening at the BFI South Bank and in a number of shots the new rat is *sort of* in silhouette rather than completely visible in full colour (for example there’s a shot where it rears up in the tunnel and it’s semi-silhouette)

      May 7th, 2020 - 9:12pm

I wondered why.The only clear shots were the ones in Greels underground lair where it is feeding and the attack on leela. The rest i could barely see a thing. And like i say i had it on an exceptionally bright setting. The other CGI effects were rather good.

Watched The Sarah Jane Adventures last week, along with the Farewell Sarah Jane final short again, her life tribute was very moving.

I still have her autobiography but was lovely to see some of the stars talking about her. Cried my eyes out when Tom broke down on screen.

      Great stuff.

I could hardly see anything of the CGI rat in the sewer scenes – very, very dark and almost impossible to see anything. Disappointing.

These sets are great and a definite improvement in quality over the DVDs, but I can’t help thinking they could be better. The outdoor scenes shot on film in “masque of Mandragora” are very grainy and the indoor scenes shot on video tape could be improved with today’s tech. To see what’s possible in terms of quality for old shows shot with a combination of videotape & 16mm film, check out the recent Monty python Blu-ray releases. The quality is absolutely outstanding, way better than the Doctor Who sets. What does everyone else think?

The problem is all the film elements on season 14 no longer exist. Monty pythons film elements survive and thus would naturally look better. Better comparison would be the film elements in season 19 Which the whole season of film elements survives. The indoor scenes are already restored to the current available technology for this release so probably won’t look that much better

    • Rob W

      May 7th, 2020 - 3:34pm

Not all of the original live action 16mm film elements for Monty Python series 1 to 3 survive, the recent restoration also used the earliest generation (or copies) of 2 inch quad tapes. The Monty Python sets are more expensive than these sets and higher Bit rates can also improve the picture quality.

      May 7th, 2020 - 10:33pm

Masque outdoor bits were a grainy when compared with hand of fear. But they still look great compared to DVD versions.

No problem with indoor scenes to me though.

I do find when my player upscales to 4k it can come off worse sometimes. I’m watching on a 55inch 4k OLED screen.

But having seen some 4k blurays of old movies where the grain spoils the film (Ghostbusters, Labyrinth, Groundhog Day for example) it isn’t as bad as those. I now only get 4K if recent movie due to the grain on older films.

I just had a frank conversation with amazon as my order still not dispatched and was passed to someone senior. Apparently the people with delivery dates next week are only to get them IF stock arrives and only then if it is delivered to the nearest warehouse. If that fails to happen then the orders will be cancelled. So despite paying for premium and ordering on the announcement day…there is no guarantee i will get it. So i just waiting for the email on monday that says cancelled as he admitted there had been no stock arrived this week.

There’s a pandemic on. It’s not their fault there’s distribution issues. You’ll have paid no more than anyone else who pre-ordered and nobody pays until the item is despatched from Amazon on any pre-order so there doesn’t seem to be an issue here? It’s looking quite likely there’ll be more stock so surely it’s worth waiting for that and not harassing overworked key workers?

To be honest I do not think they know what it is yet

You have to remember the impact of Covid-19 on many industries involved in producing these sets and the problems already caused by trying to get 14 out.

I don’t personally think there will be any more releases until next year now or at least late 2020.

But if series 26 and 14 are we getting this year you can’t argue with that they are both classics

    • Keith millward

      May 7th, 2020 - 10:15am

How can you put season 26 in the same league as 14! Like comparing the Premier League with Sunday league lol

    • Gordon

      May 7th, 2020 - 11:02am

Oh they definitely know what the next couple of releases are. They already have a good chunk of material ready for the next set. Chris chapman already has 2 documentaries ready for It and Richard Bignell has already Scanned pdf material for the next 2 sets. It’s just unknown if everything is ready for the next set.

Season 26 is great. It’s in my top 5. Battlefield is flawed but there is a lot of good stuff. Ghost light Is very rich and constantly has new stuff I pick on. Curse of fenric is 1 of the best who stories ever. It’s fantastic and has aged beautifully. Survival is a joly good romp and influenced the 2005 revival in some ways

    • daz

      May 7th, 2020 - 11:09am

Keith. Because Season 26 is still a classic and has some of the best writing of the original 26 year run.

But each to their own. We all have our favourites.

    • Christ Howarth

      May 7th, 2020 - 11:39am

    • Bobby Fackrell

      May 7th, 2020 - 12:35pm

I said they were both classics and they are, both highly and fondly regarded seasons amongst Who fans which they are

I’m not comparing them you are putting words onto my screen

    • Bobby Fackrell

      May 7th, 2020 - 12:40pm

Gordon I agree they know what they are but do you think the announcement is delayed because they are not sure when they can be released?

2 before Christmas would be lovely but I think production has been hampered by this Co-vid nightmare

I too love series 26 it has a special place in my heart because it was my era as a kid and I vividly remember that Ghost Light Cliffhanger

      ‘Light?’

That scared me as a child!

    • Gordon

      May 7th, 2020 - 1:14pm

It’s a certainly a possibility that with the coronavirus that they are unsure when they can manufacture thousands of the box sets however I think we will get 1 of them before Christmas certainly. It’s the 1 after that I’m not sure of. I doubt everything for the one after has been filmed. All depends on how the situation is in the next couple of months and whether or not filming will be allowed. They probably will be allowed at some point in the next couple of months as long as it’s an extremely small crew involved.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      May 7th, 2020 - 1:51pm

      Cheer Gordon

Well as I said im more than happy with 26 and 14 and 12 let’s not forget many people have that for the first time now given the year of the lockdown.

I won’t argue if 2 appears before Christmas but I’ll understand if not.

Don’t forget The Faceless Ones, a reversioned Power of the Daleks and hopefully Fury From the Deep if that one does not get delayed.

There was a new series in January too

Its been a great year for Who considering what is happening globally so I say let’s enjoy what we have, look forward to what we know is coming later and wait patiently for news about the future of The Collection sets

    • Gordon

      May 7th, 2020 - 2:39pm

Fury is said to be on schedule. The good thing is they can do animation remotely from home

    • Bobby Fackrell

      May 8th, 2020 - 9:21am

After watching that Charles Norton interview about The Power of the Daleks and his confirmation they intended to mark the Troughton centinary I’m wondering again if series 6 may materialise at the end of the year.

Yes it is two separate teams who work on these projects but the idea to celebrate Troughton’s 100th year has obviously been banded around.

We are due a black and white series, 6 and 2 are the two most likely but 6 seems to be in the best condition

The Zavvi orders for Australian addresses are still marked as processing and Zavvi have said they are still waiting for stock to fulfil those orders. However, that’s pretty standard for Zavvi with these box sets as they seem to always deliver them up to two weeks after the release date. Usually I give up on them and buy off eBay instead, but that’s not exactly an option right now with the insane prices being listed. Fingers crossed Zavvi comes through soon (and the item arrives undamaged, which Zavvi don’t have a great track record with either!)

Finally got ahold of someone at Amazon on my stateside account. She told me I needed to check from my uk account since different people help with that, she gave me the number and a link to their chat. I explained to her that even though I ordered it from the uk site I live in the states and that the UK site isn’t taking phone calls and the chat app for it isn’t available in my region. She let me know that she only had limited access to info on the order since it wasn’t placed with my stateside account, but she did some checking. She finally told me that my order was shipping soon, it was packed and I should have it by May 15. Good news indeed.

Maybe someone from the site, like booboo, can email BBC Studios and see what the situation with stock is? It saves clogging up the BBC inbox (they have a lot of staff off sick) and a post by someone trusted would mean the info could be believed.

It took me ten days to get a reply, due to the staff shortages, but it sounds like this season has been the fastest seller. The info I received on manufacturing could be interpreted either way though, so I couldn’t say myself if there were more copies still to arrive.

I’ve emailed Zoom again as emailed on the 27/04/2020 as the bank blocked the £39.99 payment (being overly cautious with fraud alerts) so I had to ask Zoom as the retailer to request the payment again. I had no reply so messaged through the website on the 30/04/2020. No reply came so emailed again on the 04/04/2020 (release date) and still no reply. I have messaged them through the website again just now so fingers crossed I hear back. I ordered on a guest account so there is no way for me to go in and ask them to take the payment and the email gives 72 hours to contact Customer Services or the order will be automatically cancelled. I am quite accepting of the fact now that if they do reply (which I hope they do) they’ll probably say it is now out of stock and the order is cancelled. 🙁

Try phoning the order line at 0800 130 3080. They will answer and although they are not customer services they can contact customer services and speed up the response. They did this for me and I had a response the same day.

Hearing reports of faults in this box set. Anyone who’s received theirs found problems yet? Excitement is being tempered by disappointment by the sounds of it.

Only problem I’ve found is for the title card for Behind the Sofa on The Masque of Mandragora they use the background from Seasom 26 with the monsters from that season. Only on that one though, the other behind the sofas use the correct background.

Defiantly something going on….despite pre ordering early ; on the release date I receive the same email apologising and saying they don’t have the stock to fulfill the order and will email when they do. I managed to get hold of someone at amazon and threw all the information (we all know the situation regarding these sets) and my upset at them…they ended by escalating the complaint and asking me to wait a couple of days.
Surprise ! Today I get an email stating the set has been dispatched. No idea what was going on. I’m just gonna be happy I’m getting mine and will live in ignorance to whatever the issues were and how it got resolved.

I do hope everyone else in the same or similar situation also gets a satisfactory resolution.

Count me among the ‘Zoom waiters’. My copy was despatched a week ago today and I’ve not received it yet. (By the way, I live in south-west London. Perhaps some areas of the country have more delays with Royal Mail than others.)

I do wish Zoom used a trackable form of delivery (like Amazon do). It would make this whole business less stressful.

I’ve noticed a fault on mine. Does anyone else have this. On Robots of Death, clicking Play All just redirects back to the main menu. But it let’s me play each episode individually. No great hardship in all honesty, I just wondered if they were all like this.

    • Mikemars62

      May 6th, 2020 - 2:04pm

Negative matter, what “second release”? There was a reissue of season 12 only because it was initially released in smaller quantities than all the subsequent releases in the collection. The reissue brought the total numbers in circulation to the same level as all the others, so it is highly unlikely season 14 will get a “second release”.

    • booboo

      May 6th, 2020 - 2:08pm

its because there is a suggestion that the full inventory was not able to be made so there might be a second delivery as such

  • Gordon

    May 6th, 2020 - 12:23pm

Regarding the stock levels. I’m hearing that Sony dadc who manufacture the sets wasn’t able to manufacture their full allocation for this set because of the coronavirus. That would explain why most of the retailers have had to cancel orders. With this in mind I think it’s possible due to the situation for more to be manufactured at an later date.

Not sure how making it 1 per customer would work. Scalpers will just use different names different bank cards and they could send it to friends and family address. It would eliminate some but I doubt it would completely eradicate them all

One copy per address seems fair. Obviously, some will find a way around it, like those that found the loophole/error with the Zoom 10 percent off your first order offer.

    • booboo

      May 6th, 2020 - 1:00pm

wont stop it, they will just order from multiple sources with multiple emails and even address, i could have got 30 copies this way if i wanted to, besides i doubt retailers would want such a restriction forced on them.

If anything trying to limit the eBay market would only force up the price when it sells out on-line.

    • Things that go bump in the night

      May 6th, 2020 - 12:36pm

      Thanks Gordon for the update.

Let’s be patient then for a 2nd round of manufacturing and not panic into paying current eBay prices.

I agree, ‘where there’s a will there’s a way’; there will always be ways around any purchase process for those that are skilled resellers, but it may deter the opportunistic resellers.

      Thank you

      May 6th, 2020 - 12:39pm

    • Denis

      May 6th, 2020 - 1:38pm

You don’t even have to use different names & cards. HMV were limiting it to 1 per customer, but it’s quite possible to make multiple orders by going through the select item/checkout process multiple times. There’s only one way to get these sets if you didn’t pre order. Be on the ball, be quick & spend hours online trawling. You can still get season 23 from Argos if you’re lucky enough to live in Cornwall!

    • Bobby Fackrell

      May 6th, 2020 - 6:42pm

I feel for people getting orders cancelled but I think all suppliers are doing their best under these difficult circumstances
Those of us who have them are very lucky and sadly I feel it may be the last collection box set this year.

Yes season 14 is one of the most popular ones but these problems are unique to the global situation, blaming Amazon, BBC, Zoom, God etc is unfair and so is complaining about preorders and encouraging people to bulk buy.

I am confident the people who missed out will get a second chance after what has happened with this release just like they did with 12.

The reason your orders are being cancelled and no one can give straight answers is because no one knows what the future holds with the Co-vid 19

Be patient and the Doctor will see you soon x

Have there been any reviews of this set?

Are there any experts out there that can review and confirm if there were indeed any edits made to ‘Talons’ to appease the PC crowd? Or is it as originally broadcast?

To those who have got their sets, does the CGI rat live up to expectations?

Some further comments about ‘The Collection’ releases availability:

    1) Couldn’t it be feasible only a limited amount of Season 14 units are been available up until now due to transportation disruptions due to Covid-19? And more will be available later?

    2) Given the limited pressing run of these sets, couldn’t the BBC agree with a retailer to make it a ‘retailer exclusive’? It would then be a bit easier to set up a purchase process to limit one set per customer, per delivery address? (If supermarkets can limit the number of certain goods per customer, e.g. toilet roll, then limiting one per customer might help the current collectors. Of course those buying just to resell at higher prices can still use multiple names and email addresses, however trying to use multiple delivery addresses are a bit harder to manage). Many US retailers have ‘exclusives’ such as Best Buy, Target, etc, whilst the rest of the retailers get the vanilla release.

    3) Just a further point from item 2). I noticed on eBay, some of the sellers there indeed obtained multiple copies of Season 14, as they use either the same photo, or photos of the set with the same background for several listings. So trying to limit to one copy to one customer and delivery address may help those of us who are collectors who really enjoy Doctor Who.

    Thank you

Can’t comment on the set mate, but wholeheartedlyk agree about limiting this to ne per address. If there were any problems with the sets it would also be easier to deal with one retailer. A pity the BBC no longer have their own website too as some of profit goes to the retailer.

How on earth would you edit Talons? I understand that some people view it as racist (and love to take certain lines completely out of context to do so) but the one huge controversial part (even at the time) is so integral to the plot that you couldn’t remove him without utterly wrecking the plot.

Sadly didn’t think much of CGI rat personally I prefer the original version
Would have preferred if they had done cgi improvements to Masque of Mandragora (ep 1) instead

      Thanks for your replies.

Rob W: good to read support for a limiting purchase process.

Rich & Anonymous: That’s great news that there are no edits. How it should be – as originally transmitted.

Graham: Thanks for being objective about the CGI rat. Sounds like the Liz Sladen documentary is worth the price of admission alone.

Why go to all the trouble of limiting how many copies someone can buy (which is complicated and almost impossible to enforce)? Why not just press enough copies so that everyone who wants one can buy one, like every other DVD release in the world. The BBC seem determined to lose money!

    • Bobby Fackrell

      May 7th, 2020 - 9:51am

No edits and rightly too it is a product of its time but if you read the booklet it says of Talons in bold lettering ‘contains language some may find offensive’

So you can’t say fairer than that.

If you look past clumsy language of the time and the occasional stereotypical casting over the years and see Doctor Who for what it is, what it represents and what it’s core messages have always been since 1963 it’s actually one of the least racist programmes out there.

Like Christopher Eccleston said in 2005, the Doctor’s message is ‘love life’

Look at what the ‘Suilurians’ represents.

Look at the original producer and director, a young woman and an Asian man.

If anyone is really offended by a script which is over 40 years old I’m sorry for you but you’re missing the bigger picture

He’ll never get that kind of money for it! It’s been reaching around £130 on eBay when auctioned, I’ve yet to see a copy go for more than that. Seasons 10,12,18,19,23 & 26 are selling for £80-£100. The greedy scalpers will be sat on their multiple copies for a long time. Season 14 will drop in price eventually.

Still searching ebay constantly to see if I can get a copy for less than £100, still with no luck.On the plus side Amazon has notified me that they’ve despatched my copy of the latest Jodie Whitaker series, but there’s not really that many extras in it to be worth the price to be honest.
