No mention of the extended episode 1 of Terror of the Zygons that was on the dvd release. Yes I know the dvd extras get transferred over but I was hoping for it in HD.

I’m sure it will be there. The question is will the updated effects still work? They didn’t if you watched the extended Revelation of the Daleks on the Season 22 boxset.

      July 5th, 2025 - 12:07am

I’m sure it will be scanned as well as the other model footage for zygons and the film footage from planet of evil.

Depending on what the new effects are it might not effect ep 1 anyway.

Are they using AI on the restoration now? Looks of weird plastic-y faces and smeary-looking location shots with no film grain on the trailer.

That’s just the usual heavy noise reduction. Use of new AI tools would be adding detail.

      July 3rd, 2025 - 10:31pm

No, it’s more than NR. Look at Tom’s collar on the Android film. it now looks like painted streaks rather than textured fabric. Very odd.

    • DanWFA

      July 4th, 2025 - 9:37am

I wouldn’t worry too much, We’ve had the same discussion past few times the trailers have come out then when the boxset itself is out there’s no sign of any looking AI restoration or anything waxy.
Must be how the clips are transferred for a trailer.

    • Gordon

      July 5th, 2025 - 12:51am

Same conversation with 15 25 and 7. The trailers are definitely caked with dnr but the final product less noticeable. It is there but a bit more controlled depending on who you ask.

  • Craig F

    July 3rd, 2025 - 6:10pm

    O M G !
My brain has just exploded after watching the trailer!

My favourite season & the first I watched as a child too at last!

Terror of the Zygons looks fantastic with an improved Skarasen too, the only let down in the broadcast version.
An Ian Marter tribute as predicted but none for Robert Banks Stewart or Paddy Russell, a missed opportunity I think.
On the whole some great extras, just waiting on the release date hopefully early September.

There’s already a Robert Banks Stewart feature on the DVDs that will be ported over.

Similarly there’s plenty with Paddy Russell too including commentary additions on the episodes, a brief interview and contributions to the documentaries on the original Pyramids of Mars features.

    • Rex F

      July 3rd, 2025 - 10:30pm

But they didn’t show the improved Skarasen – for all we know it could have been reshot with a sock puppet…

I usually Buy from Amazon but I just can’t be Bothered with them Today.
Awhile ago when someone said the Collection had Finally gone up for Pre-Order on Their Site I tried Ordering and a Sign kept popping up saying they were trying to Sort out Technical Problems and Try again Later.

Hello Craig F, I always liked Amazon, because of not having to pay while the Order is about to Ship. But I’ve since found out Zavvi do the same. Plus I’ve Noticed people that Buy Products From Zavvi always seem to get them Shipped Days Early. So it’s a Win, Win Really.

It’s meant to be giving an effect of perspective, isn’t it, different amounts of sharpness for different planes? Perspective has often been a problem with these covers up to now.

International customers often can’t purchase certain products until a release date has been fixed or is expected to be soon, so it’s probably just that. These things don’t sell out anymore, so just give it some time.

@Prof Horner It’s superb, but not what I was expecting at all. I was certain it would be Pyramids themed but he’s done zygons again! The background being the “is half power lethal” bit with elements of their organic crytalography is a surprise within, an easter egg moment. I was expecting something darker and more brooding or more declamatory. This is none of those but it works , it really works.

With Terror of the Zygons and the Seeds of Doom being released as part of the season boxset. The BBC must have got the rights back. They were removed from the BBC I player for months. I wonder if they will be back on there again soon.

The bbc never lost the rights. The steaming rights wre what were in dispute but the physical media ones have been long sorted. Same with unearthly child itl be there on season one when that eventually comes out dispite missing from streaming

    • Craig F

      July 3rd, 2025 - 6:28pm

Interesting Barney I was wondering about that too, thanks for the clarification.

    • Barney

      July 3rd, 2025 - 10:39pm

No problem, I raised the question on the missing episodes forum when Steph Coburn first started being “difficult” about unearthly child and was very pleased to get a reply from Richard Bignall. He does all the pdf and research for these sets so the guy knows his stuff, and he confirmed that physical media rights are sorted for all classic who and that it would be streaming that had the occasional issues. He’s embellished more on other various forums and other members of the doctor who restoration team have said similar so its coming from good sources rather than just hearsay.

At last, at first I was disappointed that there wouldn’t be any updated effects but it turns out Terror of the Zygons is getting them, they just weren’t in the trailer for some reason, maybe they’re still not finished.

Although I don’t get why Pyramids of Mars doesn’t, they were already done for Tales of the TARDIS so surely they could’ve simply been transferred over, not that the original effects were distractingly poor or anything.

Still, a great season, one that will get a lot of mileage from me.

    • Craig F

      July 3rd, 2025 - 6:34pm

Might be worth a second look at the trailer Bob, the Skarasen clips have been re-done from the original & restored model.
I presume the one Hinchcliffe is looking at in his interview, also the explosion in the loch looks new too.

    • Bob

      July 3rd, 2025 - 7:41pm

Maybe they have been re-done but those shots of the Skarasen were from the original broadcast. I am very curious to see the final results.

    • Barney

      July 3rd, 2025 - 10:34pm

I concur about pyramids. We are very lucky we get so much in these box sets and so much care is taken….but id much rather have the option of turning updated effects for the proper normal version than have to sit /fastforward through the cringy tales of the tardis intro. Ive no problem with putting the tales of the tardis on there. Just dont make it the only way to seethe effects ect. Still a minor gripe in what looks to be a cracker of a set

  • Matt Y

    July 3rd, 2025 - 1:57pm

Oh wow! This is a surprise! Think many of us thought this would be the very last of the classic blu rays (of complete seasons). Very happy that that has turned out to be wrong! Wish there were more 5.1 mixes for stories (just Pyramids). All of them would have been great with the 5.1. However, am so happy this is on its way. My favourite Doctor, companion and season! Happy, happy, happy! Great artwork too (as always). : )
