I just Googled to see if there was any news on the Missing Episodes.

That’s when I came across this article if you ask me I agree with Russell T Davies absolutely bonkers really mad and crazy idea. I’ve highlighted a couple of points from the article to see what you guys think. If you want to have a read it’s here https://blog.lovarzi.co.uk/bbc-spacex-missing-doctor-who-episodes/

I think this is a April Fools prank as it was posted on 1st April.

The BBC teams up with SpaceX to recover missing Doctor Who episodes

The 97 missing Doctor Who episodes could soon be back in our hands following the announcement of an historic partnership between the BBC and SpaceX.

As you know, many of the classic Doctor Who episodes from the 1960s haven’t been seen since their original transmission, at least in the UK. Indeed, the video tape originals were wiped shortly after broadcast. What remains today are film recordings that were made for overseas distribution. The BBC recalled all of these copies in the late 60s and 70s, and all of them were systematically burned. Ironically, the ones that survived the inferno only did so because certain people didn’t do their jobs properly.

And whilst it’s always hoped that these missing Doctor Who episodes will resurface one day, the BBC has taken matters into its own hands and now has a plan to recover all 97 – and they could be with us sooner than you think.

Impossible, you say? Well, the BBC’s cunning plan hinges on the fact that these episodes were transmitted. That means that the original broadcast signals still exist somewhere in space. All the BBC has to do is catch up with the signals and capture the missing Doctor Who episodes on tape.

Of course, the BBC on its own doesn’t have the scientific resources to achieve such a feat, but the rocket company SpaceX does. SpaceX has signed an exclusive deal with the BBC to track down and recover all 97 missing Doctor Who episodes using a fleet of super-fast rockets to intercept the original transmissions.

We must admit, this latest announcement from the BBC has left us scratching our heads, so we reached out to the physicist Professor Brian Cox to pick his brains on the project’s viability.

“We live in a wonderful universe,” he said, grinning widely. “The world of physics has shown us time and again that all it takes is for one person, no matter how young or old, to have an amazing idea and change the world. When you think about it, we are all missing Doctor Who episodes in some small way, and it’s in our nature as human beings to seek after them, to do whatever it takes to get our hands on another copy of ‘The Space Pirates.’ We’re living in a wonderful age of scientific discovery, and things can only get better.”

We don’t know how long, exactly, we will have to wait for the recovery of these missing Doctor Who episodes, but we are reliably informed that SpaceX’s rockets will be travelling at 99.9% the speed of light, so it could be quite soon.

So yeah mad and bonkers, unless one day someone invents a time machine to travel back in time. But I don’t believe any of this to send a rocket up in space to travel back in time to intercept the original transmission. It’s true that yes the answer is in space that everything that has ever been broadcast live those signals are out there. But no one on this Earth has the resources to do this not in this day and age. This is all an Illusion not possible.

This has certainly tickled me this morning.

This must have been an April’s fool joke. Basically it’s impossible. The signals from 1969 have now potentially travelled 56 light years from Earth. It would take modern spacecraft 50,000 years to reach where they are now by which time the signals have moved on. Besides the signals would be so diffuse they would be unretrievable.

Yes I know it’s just an April’s fool but the scientist in me just got annoyed!

I’m pretty confident some kind of release will happen at some point. There is far too many things not ported over plus the newly produced 80s collectors feature on the season 25 set teases a 90s feature at the end which suggests to me something is at least being planned for that era.

SureLy it’s a given there would be one as we have the 8th Doctor To be represented as part of the classic era Doc. The movie, shada and dimensions webisodes, 80s items not on 21-25 box sets. If not named wilderness.

Would love to know if there’s been any changes in Dimensions in Time status.

They used clips of Mel and Third Doctor in a press release / interview with Langford after they announced she was back for series 1.

And then clips of The Rani in series 2.

Regarding the next animation release, I would hope we get an announcement by the end of the year.
Maybe with a missing episode or two, never thought I would type this but it’s looking very positive.

The animations take over a year to make and work still hadn’t begun in March. I wouldn’t be expecting anything until mid-2026 with an announcement a couple of months before that, certainly not this year.

As for the missing episodes, nothing has been recovered yet even if Film is Fabulous are actively working on it and the films will have to be checked and cleaned up before anything gets announced. The previous two recoveries took several months from being handed back to the BBC before being ready to be announced, this will be no different.

Well they did say hope, and i hope so too, whenever and whatever we whovians will be there

      October 8th, 2025 - 1:23am

It’s my understanding that nothing has made it to the bbc yet. I did ask around but I’ve been told even if something has there maybe legally obligated to say otherwise. Even if it’s something is delivered it may take a while (months) till it’s ready to be revealed depends on what turns up and what their plans are for them.

As for animation wise I’ve read over on roobarbs forum from a post that myth makers “is in progress” but no idea if it’s next.

I do want to add in my opinion It’s possible things may get held off in terms of announcement depending on how and what turns up (if any). I’d guess they would also like the whole thing wrapped up before they have to make an animation announcement as back in 2013 there was a number of people that said they were boycotting moonbase as they believed rumours that Philip was going to be delivering the real episodes.

      October 8th, 2025 - 7:05am

I suspect there is an embargo regarding any announcement, due to the fact that the likes of Paul Vanezis, Richard Bignall and the guys on the missing episodes forum have been silent!

    • Gordon

      October 8th, 2025 - 8:28am

Richard has been vocal on galifrey base and pretty much said he doesn’t know anything:

“I don’t have the first clue and neither does anyone else, as far as I’m aware. The only person that probably would if there are any developments is Paul Vanezis given his close affiliation with FiF“

      October 8th, 2025 - 4:31pm

Could be reading too much into this any maybe my excitement is overdoing it but is the Anneke Wills comments regarding The Smugglers not too long ago relate to a missing episode return and not a potential animation as surmised.
Probably not but would think even a single episode would vastly help the reputation and general lack of interest

    • Andy

      October 8th, 2025 - 9:07pm

Well maybe the animations take over a year but last year a few days before Christmas if I remember rightly that we got the unexpected The Savages was announced. So I do want to believe that we may get another animation announcement soon. The Smugglers have been rumoured for sometime they might be waiting to see what Film is Fabulous have believed to have found. I expect this might be featured in the next issue of Doctor Who Magazine.

    • Craig F

      October 8th, 2025 - 9:47pm

That’s interesting Gordon about Richard B well we shall just have to wait a bit longer.

My thoughts about the next animation release, maybe Mythmaker or Smugglers as has been mentioned with a missing episode from each or just another Hartnell if returned to add as an extra perhaps.

    • James

      October 9th, 2025 - 10:58am

Smugglers rumoured since daily mirror story in January 2023 and again this year when Anneke said it was being worked on. Myth makers was rumoured out of nowhere few months ago.
Guess we will have to see what FiF turn up to see what maybe next. Can’t see them working on animating a story if episodes are coming back. Maybe if 1 or 2 eps missing from a story they would be animated (say Marco Polo as an example having 7 currently lost but 5 turn up I’d expect just the 2 to be animated).

If it’s eps from story’s which have already been animated can see a newer edition being released. Brush up and clean up the found eps. A mini doc on the find. Then released as 2nd edition. Then added to The Collection if not already released or if found after, added to Std Version.

Or Maybe they could leave disc space in Ltd box sets and Std box sets for discs to be inserted later down the line? Save rereleasing. Booklet could be slotted into box. Obviously something like DMP would be 2 or 3 discs?

I expect we’ll get some sort of announcement on this on 23rd November. Fingers crossed!

    • Gordon

      October 9th, 2025 - 3:42pm

We do have to take into account the 2023 rumours of an animation that there was a colourisation of the 45 second existing censor clips. Think it is most likely crossed wires. I do however think it will be animated even if it’s not next (unless the full or almost thing gets found then they won’t have to).

I want to point you an interview to Paul Hembury and annemarie Walsh did back in march about what the fans want:

Ha! And for what are they clamouring? Is it one particular serial?
AnneMarie: There are a few stories that usually come up. The Smugglers is a popular choice. The Massacre of St.Bartholomew’s Eve – but I don’t think that’s an imminent one. Although you never know! And anything with the Daleks…

This tells me the massacre ain’t happening anytime soon but they may have plans. It also tells me that they didn’t say the smugglers isnt imminent so it’s probably higher up the list.

Considering it was said the next one wouldn’t be till 9-12 months after signing of the new deal I’d be surprised (and delighted) if an announcement for the next one is pre Christmas.

I doubt they would leave blank spaces on a release that may or may not get filled. Only if it’s guaranteed.

Season 12: First pressing only, Revenge and Sontaran Experiment (you’d have seen/heard if you had a bad version)

Season 18: The Leisure Hive, re. soundmix (standard release also fixes Meglos credits)

      Season 20: See below

Everything else: “get knotted, we’re not fixing it” (paraphrased)

Mmm, I’m the same I wasn’t aware they were any errors with the collection box sets except season 12 First Edition. Since it this has come to my attention today regarding season 20. I emailed the BBC support team with proof of purchase. So can any of you guys let me know if they are any other problems with any of the these sets, the BBC support team will still replace them with proof of purchase not just Doctor Who any disc that has come to their attention with errors.

I have the Season 12 2nd Edition (Early 2020) and i think it still has CGI issues on disc 5
Will email and see what they say – if anything

Season 18 – I’ll email and ask for replacement Disc 1

      Many thanks guys

      Thanks Rex,

So it’s Season 18 Disc 1 what is the fault with this 1? I’ve never noticed anything wrong with this set. But I will check it out again.

Yes D84 as long as you have proof of purchase they will send you a replacement you just need to email the BBC support team. It might take a few days for them to get back to you. But not sure about the 2nd Edition. The faults with disc 2 and 5 on the 1st editions were the only effected.

I believe all these issues have been fixed with the standard editions. So my question is it worth paying more for the limited edition sets to discover they have faults. Or just maybe wait a couple of years and paying a lot less for the standard editions with all faults hopefully resolved.

Ah just hope season 13 hasn’t got any issues as am looking forward to getting this in a couple of weeks.

      Thanks Rex,

No wonder ave never noticed I don’t have surround sound system ha ha. But I will email the BBC support team so guys if any of you need any discs replaced with the following sets that are effected.

      Season 12 Limited Edition 1st Edition 2018 Disc 3, and 5.
      Season 18 Limited Edition 2019 Disc 1
Season 20 which an just finding out about is The Five Doctors disc 8 I think

Yeah just email the BBC support DVD/Blu-Ray team with your proof of purchase they should reply back or just send the replacement discs. It might take a few weeks. You won’t get a full set just the effective discs in a paper sleeve.

Hope that all helps with anyone else who has bought those sets with errors.

      October 7th, 2025 - 9:13pm

It will be interesting to see how any missing episodes returned will affect future animations. If say they recovered episode 4 and 5 of The Wheel in Space. Would they still animate all of the story or just the first two missing episodes ? We all wait for a proper announcement. Just two weeks to go to season 13 release!

Just a hunch anything over the 50 percent threshold will get part animated. They may do a vanilla recon version first to get it out quickly and then do a part animated with extras later when it is its turn for animation. I expect any story that is completed will just get a vanilla release and then the bonus features will get made for the season set with the exception of the crusade for obvious reasons ie season 2 is already out

    • Gordon

      October 6th, 2025 - 12:19pm

Also if it’s a story in the process of being animated or is away to be animated the found episode/s will be included on that release. Whether or not they change tact and only do part will depend on how much of it turns up. If it’s enough it will then depend on how far along. If it’s like 75 percent they may just decide to finish it regardless. Plus they may also be contracted to complete it regardless

    • Andy

      October 6th, 2025 - 5:48pm

This all too much hope for it does seem that they may be light at the end of the tunnel regarding missing episodes in the hands of private collectors this is just a rumour that I read in the Daily Star in the summer.

Back in the summer, The Daily Star reported that these might include The Daleks’ Master Plan: The Traitors, Part Four of The Tenth Planet (featuring the first ever regeneration, from William Hartnell’s Doctor into Patrick Troughton’s), Episode Three of The Web of Fear, (the first appearance of Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart), and The Macra Terror. Private collectors are said to have the complete Marco Polo, the fourth Doctor Who story, too.

But can you imagine if this is the case 11 missing episodes including the complete Marco Polo the 4th story that would be amazing to see that back it would mean the first season would only have 2 episodes missing. and The Tenth Planet Part 4 and The Web of Fear Part 3 that would complete 3 missing adventures. But am doubtful about anything of this being true, it was reported by the press back in 2013 just weeks before the 50th anniversary that there was over 100 episodes had been found which turned out to be just rumours. But some truth that 9 episodes had been found which we now know. But I do believe that we may have some news about these finds by Film is Fabulous which are dedicated to finding lost tv programmes.

As mentioned by Sue Malden at our RECOVERED event in May, we are aware of several missing episodes of Doctor Who (Sue stated one [or] two, but there are more than this) in private film collections in the UK. We are liaising with the individuals about cataloguing and preserving their entire collection, including the missing Doctor Who episodes, and ensuring that copies are returned to the BBC. We expect to make a detailed announcement shortly.”

Now again she mentioned 1 or 2, but are more than this. “So, when the time is right, we really do hope that it will be Film is Fabulous that manages to return at least one or two, I don’t know, of the missing episodes of Doctor Who to the BBC.”

So again they don’t know for sure if the episodes found are any of the ones missing from the BBC archives.

But those mentioned in the Daily Star newspaper and Where the tabloid got such information from is unknown. They may have got the info from another source.

We will all just have to wait and see. Got Season 13 coming out in a couple of weeks.

Then who knows we might get a surprise early Christmas present with concrete proof that something has been found and what.

    • Rex F

      October 6th, 2025 - 6:30pm

I can work out where The Star got the info – very old forum chatter. “Stolen from Blue Peter!”, “Sold to shady private collector by corrupt TV station boss!”, “smuggled out to a rained off school sports day and never returned”, and so on. It’s just outdated speculation, since debunked. And the idea of a collector managing to find and ‘borrow’ a full seven episode story is extremely unlikely purely due to how these things were disposed of in the UK.

    • Andy

      October 7th, 2025 - 4:11pm

Yeah Rex, your probably right we will just have to wait and see what Film is Fabulous have believed to have found it might be nothing as Sue has said she doesn’t know which episodes are missing from the BBC. They could well be just existing episodes. But am looking forward to see what they have found with the Avengers as like Doctor Who was quite a lot missing from the early series. And Blue Peter did borrow episodes of Doctor Who for clips to use on the show. Plus school programmes like Watch used footage from the Power of the Daleks I think it was called what life was like in the 60s or something.

We will just have to wait and see if anything comes of this have they in fact found any of the 97 missing episodes and they might be back with the BBC for an announcement next month. But time will tell it always does.

    • Mark G

      October 7th, 2025 - 6:23pm

As for Crusade being already in the season 2 set – if they decided to animate it they could issue it as a solo release but with content to match the box set disc so we could buy it and put it in the existing set. Just a thought.

Got to admit film is fabulous has posted a real positive update that has got my interest. Believe it when I see it but it’s very positive coming from them. Firstly they have been accepted as a charity which is excellent plus :

As mentioned by Sue Malden at our RECOVERED event in May, we are aware of several missing episodes of Doctor Who (Sue stated one of two, but there are more than this) in private film collections in the U.K. We are liaising with the individuals about cataloguing and preserving their entire collection, including the missing Doctor Who episodes, and ensuring that copies are returned to the BBC.

Also: We’ll have a few things for [Dick Fiddy] to announce at Blackpool in November. The next few weeks are going to be very exciting!

And: We hope to have more news on early Avengers episodes in the weeks ahead.

It might just end up being better prints but it all sounds positively exciting. I doubt film is fabulous wouldn’t have mentioned all this if they had nothing. They have been pretty transparent whenever they can in the past

Any episode find is welcome. Even if it’s a better print. How much of a help to season 11 if invasion of the dinosaurs 1 is a part of the finds or finds.

I would love to see some eps of the completely missing historicals turn up. Eps from also Marco Polo, myth makers, the massacre, smugglers or highlanders.

I’m kind of hoping it will be something that will help the animations as well. Even if 1 ep of crusade does turn up it would hopefully help at least help get its own release. Plus plenty of people have wondered why they haven’t animated wheel yet. How wonderful would it be if even part of wheel turns up that maybe only 1 episode needs an animation and that ep is ep 1 .

When enemy and web were revealed there had only been 7 eps animated since then the total is now 53 with 44 unanimated. The odds are that some might be already animated episodes. I’m not saying the animations are replacements for the originals (clearly not) but it might help retire some of the less liked ones. Bye web 3. Au revoir reign 4 being 2 possible examples

Lol, forgot web 3 was animated. Blocked it from my mind and was envisaging it as the telesnap recon haha.
Seriously though, anything from completely missing stories would be amazing news, marco polo, massacre (especially), power, etc

And people are complaining we’re getting no new who for a while, you never know …

    • Prowl1701

      October 4th, 2025 - 5:28am

      October 4th, 2025 - 10:42am

Any episode for me. I’d be interested in fan reactions though to a dvd/bluray release of… Well let’s say they recovered episode 3 of fury from the deep. How would you all like it released? For me I think release it either as part of a reissue of the animation but with the episode included on the B&W animation and the reconstruction disc or release just the reconstruction with the new episode. Whatever way rediscovered episodes are released fans will no doubt find something to complain about!

    • James

      October 4th, 2025 - 10:53am

Maybe why some stories haven’t been done yet as certain eps are known to exist. Fingers and more crossed …

    • Gordon

      October 4th, 2025 - 12:16pm

I’d go for a rerelease of fury bookcollector

Disc 1: Reframed 4:3 b and w animation with the optional ep 3 animation with fixes

      Disc 2: colour 16:9 animation

Disc 3: recon with live action ep 3

Original extras but instead of the slide radio broadcast I’d include the Tom baker narrated cassettes. Maybe a doc on the find or something on victor pemberton (depending on how quickly it gets released)

    • Prof Horner

      October 4th, 2025 - 12:17pm

If the missing episodes are say The Moonbase or The Invasion, we could have special editions. If they are more than three single episodes, they could have a Lost in Time 2 . Or if they are just 2 episodes, they could have them as special features on the next animation. Episode 4 of The Crusade would be nice.

    • Bookcollector

      October 4th, 2025 - 2:05pm

I was thinking along those lines Gordon. I think in the case of stories that had individual episodes animated, such as prof named and the likes of reign or ice warriors then a special edition is definitely the way to go. Oddly I think those stories that only had limited animation episodes are probably the easiest to redo. I’d even be very happy to by web of Fear the special edition special edition…

    • Gordon

      October 4th, 2025 - 7:59pm

Lost in time was a great release for its time. However I feel there isn’t a need for lost in time 2. There seems to be a long term plan for the animations and the collection sets and unlike the 2011/13 finds both those ranges aren’t winding down for at least a few years. Even if a story isn’t planned to be animated at the moment (the massacre was mentioned in march as 1 that is not currently imminent for animation) an orphan ep can easily be slotted into another animated release and then also included when the time eventually comes.

Think the only drawback with doing special editions of a story if there is a find of an already animated story is we’d probably have to wait till the newly made extras is made and complete before released before seeing it which may not be as soon as bbc studio might want if it’s 6plus months after being found. They could always produce features ahead of time and mask it for the collection sets but I’m unsure if it would be kept secret until they were ready to reveal

    • Rex F

      October 4th, 2025 - 11:33pm

They might just put any episodes on iPlayer. (I’m assuming here that iPlayer is currently significantly cheaper than an actual broadcast, bearing in mind how many exclusive series are on there that don’t get a TV repeat.) That way it’s only any kind of issue if a Crusade ep turns up, with Collection releases dealing with the rest, and Crusade eps seem less likely to turn up based on what’s been said before – we’ve been told of collectors owning season 3 eps, and “borrowed” material tends to come from batch returns of later material (talking stats).

    • Gordon

      October 5th, 2025 - 12:40am

Would probably cost a bit to restore it from scratch. I’d expect some sort of release before going on iPlayer. Considering how well the midnight iTunes release went for web/enemy I expect a similar release before physical shortly after

    • Rex F

      October 5th, 2025 - 3:35am

Since restoration takes time, they could just perform a basic scan and grade at first if the film isn’t wrecked – and most of them seem to be well looked after by the collectors. But as you say, there’s potentially some good money to be made – and since the episodes would presumably fall under BBC Studios then they wouldn’t be doing their jobs properly if they didn’t take that into account.

I was thinking about the iTunes releases, and what they would do now. Obviously there are more services available, but there’s no reason why they can’t supply all of them I suppose (iTunes, Amazon, any other DTO). Then the files can be upgraded when they’re restored, as happens when a movie you’ve purchased gets a new 4K transfer.

What I remember most about that iTunes release though is refusing to buy them when I saw that Apple had a $1 to £1 pricing structure – now I could use a VPN and get the cheaper US package, or hopefully even an alternative provider. (It wouldn’t have been so bad if the extra money was actually going to the creatives…)

    • Bellal

Tbf money wouldn’t be a concern or afterthought to me if anything shows up. Happily buy digital, barebones dvd and special edition/documentary releases. I would make it a priority.

Im not one to constantly expecting finds and had settled on the 97 as that being that but oh how my hopes are up

This crazy news. The fact film is fabulous have been very open fills me with a bit of fear. I suppose I won’t believe anything till I see it. It’s ridiculously positive though.
The cynical part of me wonders if it’s just a ploy to get money off people as they ask for donations now.
Has anyone on here donated yet?
On the other hand they have a good track record so I should be more positive.
We’ve heard a lot about missing episodes and every year the mirror reprints the same old story that more have been found.
I’m just a bit cautious at the moment but it’s definitely a good sign.

I know some might be skeptical with them now asking for donations NB but that is all tied into becoming a registered charity. As I understand it that is also a key reason why many collectors are now far more willing to work with them and many locked doors have become unlocked. They have worked really hard to get a charity status over the past few years so it seems counter productive for the first thing to do is crap all away a bunch of goodwill on something that can’t be guaranteed especially when that could effect donations going forward. I definitely feel something is happening but until all is revealed I’m refusing to get too excited. It may take a while. Soon could still be 2-3 months away or even longer depending on their definition of soon

Dave there is the Blackpool Film Collectors’ Convention in November 2025. At 2.30pm on Sunday, 16th November, in The Lancaster Suite, Dick Fiddy will introduce four episodes of recovered television, which were found in private film collections by Film is Fabulous! These four previously missing episodes will encompass comedy, drama, and light entertainment. We have been told it’s nothing who related so we can rule out any reveal by or showing.

Can anyone confirm which other sets have had replacement discs offered and received?

      Many thanks in advance

    • Andy

      October 6th, 2025 - 3:52pm

Hi I’ve never noticed anything wrong with the collection box sets except season 12 which was a couple of discs which were already addressed pretty quickly. They did send me the 2 replacement discs with proof of purchase. Now just going by what you guys are saying is season 18 The Leisure Hive has a fault, and now season 20 some discs are faulty. What if you haven’t got proof of purchase if for the sake of argument you bought at a shop and you don’t have the receipt. Which I believe I still do as luckily enough I bought mine pre-order off Amazon or HMV. So how do I claim for those faulty discs as I can’t remember. If so can someone tell me which sets need replacing.

@Gordon re. Ian Levine – oh my word, that poor audience that had paid hard earned money to the BFI.

I genuinely can’t understand why Ian wasn’t given a verbal warning for the foul mouthed rant on mic, let alone ranting and pushing security to reach the VIP room – because in both situ’s I would’ve expected the BFI to have issued him a verbal warning first then kicked him out the second time.

The next best thing would be for the BFI to contact Levine and issue him a recorded warning on his behaviour. How no one in the audience got up and told him to shut up is simply astounding. It reeks of favouritism between the BFI and Levine by letting him act a spoilt brat over and over like this.

Why does the BFI think this is okay?

    • Gordon

      September 28th, 2025 - 7:32pm

He’s been warned a few times of his behaviour plus even his friends have warned him. He doesn’t listen. I’m guessing they don’t want the bad press of “dying disabled doctor who fan barred from watching his favourite show on the big screen.”

Couple of months ago one of his mates got the New York post about an ailing doctor who fan spending over 100k on ai reconstructions. Littered with inaccuracy’s and poor me’s and people trolling and conning him. The article was one sided as hell. Plus other sites picked up and posted about a dying doctor who fan. Can definitely see how him or his friends would twist it if they went to the press

    • Greg

      September 28th, 2025 - 8:42pm

Why are you saying he’s dying and disabled?

    • Mac

      September 28th, 2025 - 9:14pm

Ian has been quite ill in the last few years.

In every recent interview I’ve seen he mentions at least three times he’s disabled and dying. Then goes on to list the people that have wronged him.

    • Gordon

      September 28th, 2025 - 9:30pm

He makes his current health issues well known in pretty much every interview he does

    • Mac

      September 28th, 2025 - 9:35pm

The best interview he’s done recently had Ian going on about someone’s biological mum dying and the son she gave up refusing to go see her. Ian named names and locations and his opinions.

The type 40 podcast was contacted by the son and threatened with a lawsuit, so they had to go back and edit it out.

    • Gordon

      September 28th, 2025 - 10:01pm

And that was after ordering the type 40 lot strict instructions not to edit any of it and claiming it’s the longest and most uncensored interview he’s ever done

    • Mac

      September 28th, 2025 - 10:05pm

Well Ian can pay Type 40s legal fees.

Maybe things should be edited a bit…otherwise you end up with a 45 minute version of Music of the Spheres

    • Gordon

      September 28th, 2025 - 11:20pm

Oh you’ve seen that. Again could be even worse. 4 hour version of Alice and wonderland. 5 and a half hours or a word for word adaptation 5 and a half hour adaptation of the 8doctors novel. We could go on

    • Matt Flin

      September 29th, 2025 - 10:11am

I just started following him on Twitter (sorry X) because I (wrongly) thought that there would be some Dr Who related stuff. It’s mainly full of anti-Trump stuff.

    • Gordon

      September 29th, 2025 - 11:25am

He’s never liked trump but ever since he got re elected and especially the last month he went really down the anti trump rabbit hole that it’s pretty much all about trump. It’s quite ironic because there are quite a few fans refer to him as doctor who trump.

When he does post doctor who it’s usually to hype up the latest recon he’s done with a screenshot to show that he’s done it. No link obviously (you got to “donate” to get access to that).

    • Matt Flin

      September 29th, 2025 - 11:37am

Yes, I must admit I don’t know much about him and have only recently got back into Who after a 25-year hiatus. So, I’m discovering (and collecting) all of the limited edition box sets.

I did see some clips on Youtube of his AI recons – it all looks a bit weird, like inserted mouth movements only – seems like a lot of money spent for not that much.

    • Missyrules

      September 29th, 2025 - 11:59am

Nothing wrong with being anti-trump but when you are as aggressively opinionated as Ian is it seems a little ironic…

    • Missyrules

      September 29th, 2025 - 12:01pm

Oh, and his AI things are awful considering what he expects for them.

    • Gordon

      September 29th, 2025 - 12:52pm

Absolutely. Missyrules. I get that he’s spent money on them but they are nowhere near worth the £75 (previously £50) minimum “donation” he’s demanding before getting access to the group that has all the links. For that price I’d be expecting pressed DVDs with artwork and box. Not just YouTube links which Ian can take away at any time if you happen to annoy him for whatever reason

    • Missyrules

      September 29th, 2025 - 1:14pm

Wow £75 for a link! I recently got a dvd of the time girl wheel for under £10 which had all six episodes a box, a great cover and a printed disc. And although it’s flawed it’s still infinitely better than what I’ve seen of ian’s make a mouth move on a photo efforts.

    • Gordon

      September 29th, 2025 - 2:19pm

I do think there is a bit to go with timegirl’s animations even if it’s fantastic what they were able to pull off with just 2 of them on ridiculously minuscule budget. It’s absolute light years ahead of what Ian is doing and done for a fraction of the budget.

Though I don’t think it will happen wouldn’t be against it being included as a bonus feature in a fully animated bbc studios produced release then everybody will be happy.

I know both tardistimegirl and cyber devil aren’t best pleased about someone using their animation or artwork and selling it on eBay. I totally understand and do agree with them on that. However I totally understand why people would get that if it was the only way to get it on disc if they weren’t sure how to burn their own versions. I’m not exactly innocent in this respect as I’ve bought some Star Wars despecialised blu rays from eBay in the past.

    • Bookcollector

      September 29th, 2025 - 2:35pm

The reason I buy them Gordon is I don’t have the ability to burn my own discs or print covers. And I don’t like spending long watching things on YouTube as it gives me a migraine. I don’t know if I have the same disc as missy but mine will do me until an official version of wheel is released. Time girl’s animation is impressive but not commercially viable but it would be nice if it was used on an official release but I don’t know if it will be. I buy these things because I want them and in some cases they just aren’t available and may not ever be available. So I have dimensions in time, curse of the fatal death, uclan mission, shakedown, the adventure games etc. And yes I do feel conflicted buying them but if it’s a choice of buying an unofficial one over not having it then I’ve opted for getting them. And it’s not like they are charging Ian levine prices either. Speaking of which have you seen the birthday greetings one from Ian Gordon? It is truly unbelievable and insane

    • Duncan

      September 29th, 2025 - 2:40pm

Such a shame it has come to this :(. There was a time when us older fans saw Ian as the “man who had saved some classic old stories for future posterity “. Whenever I watch The Daleks story, in the back of my mind I always acknowledge Ian’s role in securing this for us to enjoy all those years later.
I know his health has been an issue for years now, but there are other Who people who have problems of their own, and you never hear stories about bad behaviour from them.
It’s all a bit sad really. I wonder if maybe any medication he’s on has had a detrimental effect on things. Regardless, it’s not a good look when you behave like his BFI session 🙁

One of my Patrons/YT subscribers sent me a physical copy of the Wheel animation and I am happy to own it. Iz did mention in the comments of the video I did about it, that they have nothing to do with the physical copies being sold. She does appreciate my enthusiasm for the animation itself though. I would love have it as a bonus feature on the eventual season 5 boxset.

    • Gordon

      October 1st, 2025 - 10:21am

I do have a copy of their wheel on my private youtube channel. Running 2 hours 20 and has all 6 episodes with the surviving eps slotted in. At least that will do until the bbc do their own version.

Yes I saw the birthday greeting bookcollector. Doing the recreations is one thing but at least that’s using words they said. But that is totally egotistical, tone deaf, ghoulish and disrespectful. It feels like trying to put words into Hartnell and troughton they didn’t say.

I’d like to see it prowl. It may all depend on the plans for wheel.

    • Prof Horner

      October 1st, 2025 - 10:47am

Well they could release season 5 next year, if the BBC change about Tardis Time girl version of Wheel in Space. There is so many animations still to do . Yes it maybe not good enough for a stand alone release. But it better than telesnaps reconstructions and certainly better than anything Levine is doing. Season 21 will definitely next and quite rightly so. Maybe season after that. We are almost there for season 13. Can’t wait.

    • Gordon

      October 1st, 2025 - 11:31am

I think the biggest tell if they are planning on using it officially is if it disappears completely off YouTube. I’m pretty convinced it will be within the next 3-4 official animations so I expect it’s one they will hold off 5 till at least later.

It would benefit them especially if the stand alone has surviving eps as well as the audio remastered and also the bonus features all produced and paid for by the stand alone. Means the s5 release has more budget to free them to do other things

    • James

      October 1st, 2025 - 1:07pm

How come the story hasn’t been worked on sooner? They did a cutdown 15 min version of ep1 way back in 2018. Why wasn’t this expanded upon?

Agreed that if they backed TTG version for a commercial release as most of the hard works already done. Be another off the list with concentration on the others which need starting from scratch. Add in the surviving eps and brush up the audio soundtracks. Then s5 would be ready for The Collection treatment.

with 4 stories animated recently so all behind scenes and extras just transfer over onto new discs/layouts; then tomb, ice warriors and enemy needing a brush up/blu ray transferred from their 2013 releases. Some behind the scenes with Frazier etc.

    • Bookcollector

      October 1st, 2025 - 1:41pm

There was never any intention to follow up the 15 minds animation. Fans just made that assumption. As to the ttg animation it’s not really as simple as you might think. A lot of work on likenessess will have to done for it to pass as a commercial release. It’s good but far from the expectations of most fans when money is being handed over.

    • Bookcollector

      October 1st, 2025 - 1:42pm

Ha! 15 mins autocorrect strikes again

    • Prof Horner

      October 1st, 2025 - 4:11pm

Well maybe if and when we get announcement on animations, what ever the story is to be animated first will give a clue which sixties season will be released next.

    • Gordon

      October 1st, 2025 - 6:02pm

As bookcollector mentions it was never meant to be expanded upon or an intention of animation. It was only ever meant as a short for a missing believed wiped event and it also doubled as AnneMarie Walsh’s pitch for taking over as Charles Norton’s replacement after deciding to step away from producing/directing the animations.

They may revisit it for when they do the whole thing. However they might also decide to start from scratch. Firstly it was a really quick and rushed animation with a very short production. Secondly the majority of the animation was done by Rob Ritchie who unfortunately left the range after evil so it might get redone for consistency with the animators.

Even if there was a changing of mind it wouldn’t just be a quick use it as it is for a main feature. There absolutely would be additional work done to it. Plus bbc studios will probably want some alterations and would probably want to give the thing a bit of a budget boost plus I’m sure there are things ttg would want to do if there was more money. Finally as I’ve said quite a few times people are more likely to be kind to a free product than one with a price tag attached. People tend to have a more critical eye on it.

I do have some animation news though. I found an Article from march this year. Paul Hembury who executive produced some of the previous animations namely power, evil, faceless, macra, shada, menace and savages left bbc studios in June 2024.

He was the person that spoke in march 2025 about the new deal at the savages screening. In July 2024 he and I assume his wife set up a new production company. His LinkedIn account states he started working there in January 2025.

The name of the company is 97 productions ltd. (Wonder why they chose 97? lol)Looking up company filing and there wasn’t any movement till July this year when a there was a few filings. The main one stating its future intent being lawful. I suspect that is when the deal was signed with his company.

This is showing to me a massive intent and commitment. You don’t just leave your post you have had for years and set up a production company for 1 or 2 projects

I’m really hoping maybe on November 23rd we might get a tease about the next animation. It’s been so quiet on the animation front, I wonder if they ever did get the deal they were working on a few months back hammered out.

I’m surprised the BBC haven’t done Wheel officially yet as it’s a season finale, it’s a Cybermen story (so I figure a good seller), and it’s a companion introduction story as well. I wonder if it’s less than stellar reputation is the an issue.

      October 2nd, 2025 - 12:57am

Funnily prowl the argument you make for releasing wheel, season finale, new companion, classic monster also means that it’s a potential reason for saving that story for a later release after other less interesting story at least in terms the general buyer rather than dedicated fans. And yes wheel isn’t the greatest story but it is fun. But if you think about it the only other story with big villains left is masterplan and that won’t be coming anytime soon. It may be a case of concentrating on getting some historical stories such as myth and smugglers and possibly pirates out before releasing a classic monster story.

I’m sure things are in the process of transitioning if it hasn’t been completed already with Paul Hembury going freelance and starting up his new production company (as I mentioned above) so things might be a bit longer and later than usual.

I’m so glad Janet has made her peace with the show. It would have been a sad loss if she had kept her distance. Her sofa sessions with the adorable Sarah, Peter and Matthew are some of my favourite extras on these beautiful boxsets.
Anyways, I’m hoping for a Matthew Sweet Tegan/Janet extravaganza on the Resurrection Of The Daleks disc (or wherever it ends up)

“Well as one of the colourisers who worked on Daleks & War Games – I can tell you I’m not working on anything at present

Of course that could change – but if another colourisation happens it’ll be a while away”

So I wouldn’t expect any colourisations this year or the first half of next year

I think vastly reducing The War Games down may killed any potential of any future colourasations.

The decision not to do more at this time is purely financial reasons rather than creative ones.

Benjamin cook said in July that “Both did brilliantly for BBC Four and iPlayer. (“The War Games” even pulled higher AI scores last Xmas than the Proms, Unleashed, *and* “Joy to the World”!) As soon as there’s Whoniverse money to make more, I hope we will”

Just rewatching my season 12 blu ray on the run up to season 13. And it suddenly occurred to me, I wonder why they picked the tardis interior as the menu background. It makes sense with nearly every other season and now theres a whole range of then again I get it but when you think they did season 12 as a sort of pilot its an odd choice since the tardis interior doesnt feature a single time in season 12.

    • DanielM

      October 1st, 2025 - 4:42am

      @Barney

It was decided very early on that the Menu for each Season would be the Console Room from that particular Season, since Season 12 doesn’t have it appear at all, they used the closest alternative which was the Season 13 Room & Console. I imagine Season 13’s Menu will be similar except littered with a reference to one of the two Stories it appears in. Which has been the standard since the 2nd or 3rd Release.

Wasn’t there but have heard one or 2 things:

The Ian marter documentary started the day off.

Chris chapman introduced it which you can watch here: https://vimeo.com/1120589210/586e051eeb

It’s apparently very good and usual excellent standard you expect from Chris. Sure to become a highlight of the new set. Ian’s wife and one of his sons was in attendance

Tom filmed a special introduction: https://x.com/amadmannotabox/status/1969418892536615218?s=46

And he also filmed an outro too: https://x.com/amadmannotabox/status/1969548709869305896?s=46

      He’s in fine form.

The new restoration and replacement puppet supposedly went down well with only 1 person supposedly didn’t like the new effects. No prizes for guessing who. New effects are just a small part of ep 2 and the Thames sequence in 4.

Neil Cole and Mike tucker had a chat. Neil talked about restoring the original puppet. Mike talked about creating the new one. Mike also said his next project he is working on is filming the new effects for Blake’s 7 season 3 in a couple of weeks.

Sound restorer Mark Ayres and Michael McCarthy who did the original studio sound chatted about the audio sounds.

Philip Hinchcliffe talked about the story and took questions. The release date was asked which Russell Minton who was in attendance said it was 20th October. Ian Levine took up a good chunk of the q and a by asking a question. Despite being told to “keep it brief and positive” he spent a bit of time talking about the time he interviewed him 20 years ago for the genesis of a classic documentary and how lovely he was and great he was in it then segueing into what he negatively thought of the current show and would retired 80 year old Philip go back to being producer if asked and what would do to make it better. He did answer and it was all to with giving episodes more time to breath and let people time to get to know the characters which is difficult to do with 50 mins. He also talked about the importance of cliffhangers, however he noted that the omnibus editions worked and they didn’t have any.

Ian also tried to get into the green room where the on stage guests and vips go to relax and get a break from the public and get ready. He got told no as he wasn’t on the list then got angry and went why not before grumbling saying the bfi should be selling tickets for it.

    • PJ

      September 21st, 2025 - 11:54pm

Tom Baker appeared on the big screen before the viewing with a greeting message unfortunately missed out as the tickets sold quick but saw the clip which was nice

I was a bit miffed about not being able to go, but I’m sort of glad now. Levine monopolising a large chunk of the Q and A would’ve put a dampener on things. I’ll bet some of the attendees were seething.
Looking forward to seeing the new effects, and the Marter doc at some point.

    • Gordon

      September 22nd, 2025 - 12:11pm

Apparently there was a lot of eye rolling when he pretty much made the question about himself, his documentary and his rambling sweary opinions about the current show. According to Richard Bignell Justin Johnson looked visibly regretful for giving Ian the mic. Philip did answer pretty well answering considering the rambling incoherence of his question.

    • Barney

      September 22nd, 2025 - 2:15pm

I must say i sometimes feel sorry for Ian as he’s clearly got mental health issues and probably some neurodivergance beyond his control and he has done a lot for the program over the years. I even generally agree about how terrible new who is. However….its not fair on others who support these things and go to have to be subjected to him and his opinions. You’d of thought he would be barred by now its not like these events are struggling to move tickets and this is far from an isolated incident. The green room thing is a huge no no both from a security point of veiw and general manners. I would of been annoyed if id spent money to go and hes monopolised the Q and A who ever was running it should of bit in and told him to get to the question or theyd have to cut the mic.

    • Barney

      September 22nd, 2025 - 2:24pm

Also selling tickets to a green room….is he mad. Hey there stars of our event you know that safe space away from all the fans and there asinine questions sticky paws and needy behaviour? We’ve sold tickets to it so only the worst and most desperate of the for mentioned fans can get really close to you……see how quickly these things are ran with no one from the original show in attendance

    • Rory, the original you might say

      September 22nd, 2025 - 4:03pm

@barney, I know that some events have a VIP room, so guests can go there in between signings, etc. and it’s a more relaxed environment where they can just chat with other guests and with the select few on the VIP list, but those events also have ‘guests only’ areas where they can go to get away from even the VIP fans.

    • Barney

      September 22nd, 2025 - 4:56pm

Yeah some events do a meet and greet area but that’s very different in function to a greenroom and an add on rather than a replacement

    • Gordon

      September 24th, 2025 - 10:08pm

Wasn’t asked to my knowledge. To be honest I’m not sure if it’s a well enough known rumour or not to be asked. Only place I’ve heard about it is on here.

Can I ask where you heard about the rumour?

I’d love it to be true. BBC’s answer to the Sweeney. It’s been pretty much ignored since being cancelled outside of the pilot (shipment) which got a vhs release. I’ve only seen the first season and 2 eps of season 2 on taped vhs. Would be good to get it looking as good as the Sweeney. In a way it’s a shame it’s a bbc show as the team that did the Sweeney and especially Johnathan wood has done a phenomenal job on the first 2 seasons released so far and I’m sure they would do just as good a job on this.

      September 25th, 2025 - 12:37pm

On the blu ray forum 6 months ago a member said he heard on a facebook forum in 2024 that it was being worked on, if it is true I would hope JW and team are responsible for it and as you said The Sweeney looks great, The New Avengers is done by JW as well, that’s due in November.

    • Rex F

      September 25th, 2025 - 1:21pm

The Target rumour has been cropping up for a few years now, but never from anyone in the trade. Bearing in mind the costs involved, from scanning to BBFC fees, and the BBC’s cutting back on all-new material being released on disc (sticking to simpler reissues), I’d think it’s unlikely.

If anything, the existing prints were part of the routine transfer programme at the archive and someone did 2+2=5. I’d give it more chance of some kind of streaming release if anything.

    • Gordon

      September 25th, 2025 - 6:04pm

Been doing some digging. It appears that unfortunately some person has been blocking target from getting a release every time there is an attempt. There was also a planned cinema release planned years ago that Philip was supposed to attend but it cancelled because of the issue.

If you look at who has the power to block the full series, it’s either surprising and sad or it’s an outside figure (someone who picked up format rights for re-use of some sort, that kind of thing, who might potentially want silly money – or genuinely believes that a DVD could seriously affect their chances of making a super massive blockbuster Target movie in Hollywood next year).

I’m so excited for this release. My birthday is a few days after the release so this will be my treat to myself.
Scarily, I vividly remember watching episode one of Pyramids back in the day as it was the same day my Dad remarried! Before then, I was an only child so generally Who was something solitary. All of a sudden I had a stepbrother and stepsister, both of whom loved Who as well, and it was a joy to sit and share the experience with two other like minded souls. Season 13 in particular is packed full of memories. I’ve even got my diary from 75-76 and I mention all the stories multiple times! Roll on the 20th

It’s just over a month to wait although I will probably have to wait a bit longer until 25th December as am not aloud to buy myself anything until after Christmas lol. But yeah round about the same time as last year’s Season 25. Then I predict these will probably be next

January The War Between The Land And The Sea
February The Collection Season 13 Standard Edition
March Another Limited Edition The Collection my guess most likely to be Season 21

And if and only if we might get another animation missing story but who knows. But they did say they were hoping to try to accelerate the animations.

Or they might just rush these out The Collection out the completed one’s anyways which are 11, 16, and 21 not sure about the 60s stories season 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 these might take quite a few years before we see any of these they will have to either include Reconstruction using the photo stills just like they did with Season 2 Missing Episodes of The Crusade. Or unless by some miracle the original episodes are found. The Animations Reconstructions they will probably need a stand alone release first and again if and only if they are planning to animate anymore of the Missing Episodes. And some Doctor Who Collectors from the 60s are not going to be around much longer to see some of these Episodes brought back to life which is quite a shame really.

    • Gordon

      September 18th, 2025 - 9:56am

Doubt the next set is going to be later than march because of the tax year ending. They usually like it out before the tax year ending. Plus with war only being 5 episodes I doubt it’s gonna have much of an effect if any. It might get broadcast over 1 week like torchwood children of the earth. Or 29 days. For example: First episode 1st January
      Second episode 8th January
      Third episode 15th January
      Forth episode 22nd January
      Fifth episode 29th January

      DVD/blu ray/steelbook about 3ish weeks later: 16 th February

Plus I’ve said this in another comment Ive got a hunch that the next animation is closer to summer than spring

    • Tom Williams

      September 18th, 2025 - 5:16pm

Yes I do remember that Gordon but we dk for certain surely at the moment as nothing is airing Christmas they could off done another new one instead like war games etc had but obvs not animated

    • Gordon

      September 19th, 2025 - 12:21am

Not really sure what they could do to fill the gap.

The continuation of colourisations all depend on “whoniverse money” according to Benjamin cook.

The animations contract ended with the completion offsavages and work wasn’t going to commence on the next one till a new agreement had been reached. The next animation is due about a year after signing the new contract plus as far as we know nothing else animated is in the works from any other teams

Plus it doesn’t look like bbc studios are starved for releases. Between now and the end of November:

15th September: Bergerac: the complete collection
waiting for god: the complete collection

29th September: doctor who: the collection -season 15 standard edition

      6th October: red dwarf – complete seasons 1 -12

20th October: doctor who: the collection – season 13

      10th November: Blake’s 7: the collection – season 2

24th November: the chronicles of Narnia – the complete collection

There might be others I’ve missed.

There doesn’t seem to be huge amount of room for a release for bbc studios to fit in

Seeing as I’ve heard it’s pretty much a lock 21 for the next set I’m pretty sure it’s unlikely.

He just died last month most importantly his family need a bit of time to grieve.

Secondly if it is the next release they would need to be filming pretty much now.

Thirdly biography’s take quite a bit of time to put together. For example the Ian marter documentary took 2 years to put together.

I just don’t think the time is adequately there for there to be a substantial one. Alternatively there could be a feature with a dedication at the end to him of course

There is the possibility that an In Conversation with Chris Bidmead was banked for the S21 box set.

A number of things cause me to think this may be the case. 1. S18 collection was released 3rd, it appeared at that point that the IC’s were only for the Doctors. 2. Though Janet Fielding and Sarah Sutton’s IC was filmed during S18 collection work it was included in the S20 collection. 3. They may not have considered behind the scenes IC’s until later. 4. You would have thought that a Grahame Harper IC would have been more suited to the S21 or S22 collections as that is were he did his most prominent Who work – yet it is his work on Seeds of Doom that connects his IC to the S13 collection, so by writing Frontios, a CHB IC would fit on the S21 collection.

The maximum we have had so far is 3 per season. We already know we are getting Terry Malloy. If I was going to guess Eric saward and Mark strickson might be 2 others. The question is there a limit? If it’s 3 and this is no offence to Christopher I can see them going for Eric and mark. If it’s more than 3 hopefully they will have filmed one

BUT I guess it’s unlikely to be September with it been the 10th now.

Be great if they could give a date like other releases do from other companies when available for pre-order.

The standard release for S20 is 29th September. This may indicate an early October release of S13 is unlikely while, as Nb7 said, a mid to late October release is more likely.

Chris chapman has been keeping himself busy. Started filming a doctor who making of on Thursday.

Looking at unreleased stories/seasons that don’t have making ofs:

    Season 1:
    Marco Polo
    Keys of marinus
    The sensorites

    Season 2:
    The crusade

    Season 3:
    Mission to the unknown
    Myth makers
    Masterplan
    The massacre
    The ark
    The celestial toymaker
    The gunfighters
    The war machines

    Season 4:
    The smugglers
    The highlanders
    The macra terror
    The faceless ones

    Season 5:
    The wheel in space

    Season 6:
    The Krotons
    The space pirates

    Season 16:
    The power of kroll

    Season 21:
    resurrection of the daleks
    The twin dilemma

If I was going to guess the season its for either 16 or 21. Maybe resurrection. If it’s for an animation I’m guessing wheel or space pirates. Bear in mind it hypothetically could be for a release that it’s years off.

He has also been editing a weekend with. If it’s been edited it means it’s probably coming sooner than later. I’m guessing it’s for 21 and Mark strickson.

Stories for me that would be worth a making of and there is a bit to talk about from the B&W era are:

Marco Polo – Historical and a few cast around
MTTU & Masterplan- Just an epic
War Machines – A change of story and it feels like it’s setting the tone for future stories
      Highlanders – Fraser
      Wheel – Wendy

A season overview would cover the others, unless you there is something more to talk about. I watch them all, whatever is made.

@rob, War Machines really does feel like the prototype for the UNIT era. It’s the first time they’ve properly been on contemporary Earth, outside of brief visits in other adventures and the shrunken TARDIS crew shenanigans of Planet of Giants. The Doctor teams up with the military to fight an earth based menace.

Is there a full list of The Collection UK disc errors and whether a disc has been corrected or not anywhere? I went to watch Revenge of the Cybermen last night and realised I had the corrected discs, then when I’ve just checked Season 18 and 19 I only seem to have The Leisure Hive replacement. Was there a replacement for Keeper of Traken and Castrovalva?
Was it the US releases that had issues with these discs?

Question for you all today. If film is fabulous turned two missing episodes tomorrow , which would you rather have. Two episodes that completed a story that has only had two missing episodes, like The Moonbase or The Invasion or two missing episodes of a completely missing story like Marco Polo or Fury from the Deep. Or alternatively one episode of Dalek Masterplan and Tenth Planet episode 4. Personally I want to see a complete season 4 story. So for me it would be either the first option or the last.

If it were just two then yes I think the moonbase or even underwater to complete a story. Two from an incomplete story I’d like to be from a story with nothing like power of the daleks or masterplan simply to reduce the missing amount. If it were two random episodes then tenth planet 4 and web 3

    • Babelbro

      September 6th, 2025 - 3:43pm

      Tenth Planet Episode 4.

For whatever unexplained reason the full 76 telesnaps are to this very day *still* kept away from the public domain (no BBC, DWM or Richard Bignell entires have ever shown them all)

    • Gordon

      September 7th, 2025 - 1:06am

I have different answers for different situations.

I’d go for Marco Polo for any complete story.

If it was just 2 episodes of any missing story not yet animated I’d go for the opening and closing eps of Marco Polo.

If it’s for 2 eps that complete a story I’d go for crusade.

If it is from an already animated story I’d go for 5 and 6 from fury

If it’s for individual eps I’d go for myth 4 and massacre 4

    • Pete X

      September 7th, 2025 - 6:40pm

Having done various versions of this every so often, over the last copule of decades, I find I tend to ignore those episodes that have been animated. For instance, 10 years ago I would have said Web 3 but now that for good or ill we have an animated version, it’s off the list.

The two episodes I would choose are Massacre 4 and Wheel 1.

I want to see Hartnell’s speech in the TARDIS from M4 and Troughton and Hines’ carrying of WiS1 – if any of the Troughton finds in the last 30 years has taught us anything, it’s that the acting of the regulars that carry an episode, even one from a poorly regarded story.

Whole stories to return – The Massacre, again as above and also Hartnell’s performance as Amboise, or The Highlanders for Troughton’s pre-calmed down version of the Doctor.

    • PJ

      September 7th, 2025 - 8:20pm

Back to choosing two episodes I’d go for episode 12 the destruction of time of the Daleks Master Plan to see the horrific ageing and death of Sarah Kingdom and episode 4 of the Tenth Planet for the regeneration

    • Rory, the original you might say

      September 10th, 2025 - 4:47pm

Like others on here, I’m happy to have animated versions of the missing episodes, so returning already animated episodes is low on my list.

If an entire story were returned, I’d want Daleks Master Plan. It is the first proper epic storyline and just deserves to be seen again. Yes, even Feast of Steven.

Two episodes to complete a story has to be Crusade. I love that story so much. Ian and Barbara are perfect in it.

Two random episodes would be DMP 12 and Highlanders 4. I want to see the end of DMP and how they handled the death of Sara. I want to see Jamie join the TARDIS team.

For anyone in Australia and New Zealand who may be interested, it looks as though we are finally going to be getting the standard edition versions of the Blu-ray sets.
Madman has the Season 2 set on their B2B site with a November 12 release date. I’m assuming that it will probably have the Beatles scene cut from The Chase like the Limited Edition set that was originally released here.

Im sure on a previous thread – Gordon has advised that the digital media rights are secure for AUC – so it should be included on the set

But it is the streaming rights which are elusive which is why it didn’t end up on iPlayer

The season 25 set included several items with clips from An Unearthly Child so there can’t be an issue with the serial being released as part of The Collection.

That is the case. Steve Roberts has said it should not be an issue for blu ray. The only reason they have not released an unearthly child on blu ray is because they haven’t got round to it yet.

Will they wait for an animated Marco Polo so it’s a complete season 1? Being that its the very first series, the first historical story. Seen a fanmade cover online and looks as good as offiical Lee version. Can’t wait for more news soon

I’m sure it will all depend on where the animations are by the time

    • Andy

      September 5th, 2025 - 3:39pm

I have to agree this is just a contract issue so to get the story back on iPlayer the BBC would have to pay a contract agreeable to the owners rights. They still have it in their archives it’s just they can’t broadcast not even a repeat of the story. So i don’t think it wouldn’t be a problem with An Unearthly Child on any physical media future releases. If that was the case they would have removed the story from The Beginning Box Set which is still widely available. So yeah I think this is just a broadcasting rights not just the BBC it’s so that no network can ever broadcast or stream with out a contract rights, but this is not the only story that has this issue. Terror Of The Zygons and The Seeds Of Doom have fallen into the same reason contract rights. But these are on the upcoming release of Season 13 so that’s just evidence to suggest it shouldn’t effect the release of Season 1 with An Unearthly Child included. But I don’t think we will see this for a while with the absence of the Missing story for Marco Polo. Which they might be hoping this story is found or partly or they plan on animation the whole story. But am keeping hold of my The Beginning Box Set until they get round to releasing Season 1. I would suggest keep hold of your DVD of An Unearthly Child.

    • Rob Watkins

      September 5th, 2025 - 6:07pm

An Unearthly Child is covered under Videogram rights. I guess Season One is being held off as long as possible as there might be a chance Marco Polo could be animated.

    • D84

      September 5th, 2025 - 6:42pm

With how many boxsets there are left to go

I suspect there will be a loose plan on them all by now – even if the latter half is interchangeable whilst they watch and wait what happens with the animations

I am hoping they animate as many as they can – and include them on the Collections as they come out rather than a re press later with that story inserted as a new addition (which would need to happen to Season 2)

Suspect we will get a little of both though

    • James

      September 6th, 2025 - 12:48pm

Pity they can’t do like Disney and set out a plan for the consumers to know. Like a loose plan of what it’s a head for next 5+ years or so. Obviously it would be not set in stone just what they are working on and when they roughly expect things to be released.

      What’s left to be released
      The Collection: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 16, 21, Wilderness
Animations: Marco Polo, Crusade, MythMakers, Mission/DMP, Massacre, Smugglers, Highlanders, Wheel, Pirates

      Smugglers was rumoured since 2023.
S21 and s16 most likely to be released next as they are complete compared to 60s sets.
Crusade could be last as s2 already out so no rush to get that ready for a set just yet. Just be done and released solo and s2 standard set reissue.
Mission and DMP would be done together when animated. 13 stories so that be a 1 release for the year either as mission+ part 1 and then part 2, then a full release box set
Myth Makers & Massacre be done together either before or after DMP as follow in succession so better to watch visually. Then s3 complete & ready for Collection
Marco and Highlanders both hard to do with no episodes available.

Anyone else think they may release s1 Eccleston as a curveball between the last few to give a bit of time for the animations. Wilderness has been said to be very last as a mop up set to add anything from classic era that’s found after s1-26 sets have been done so maybe not another filler for animations.

    • Scotel

      September 6th, 2025 - 1:31pm

What you need to remember is that the animations are commisioned one at a time, even if there were rumours of The Smugglers being done back in 2023 the fact it wasn’t rules it out. There’s no secret projects, they just don’t have the time or money to be sitting on something just for the sake of it/to wind up some fans. And before anyone suggests it, they’d animate the whole thing anyway so no amount of rumours of missing episode recoveries would make a difference. Obviously with so few stories remaining that doesn’t rule it out but at this point we could safely rule it as coincidence.

Being realistic about time frames and assuming the restructuring goes ahead we’ve got thfee more animations that will get included in the Collection sets and I strongly suspect they’ll be The Myth Makers, The Massacre and The Smugglers (order to be determined). That leaves every season with one recon to be made and have its audio touched up. I also believe whatever set comes first out of the 60s batch will be the next one with an animation (eg if Season 5 comes first The Wheel in Space gets animated) so they can hopefully get the standard release out before the animation gets announced causing a fan backlash.

As for an Eccelston set, I think that very much depends on how things go with the main show. Are you going to get a fair critical view of it while Russell T Davies is still in Cardiff? While you have Billie Piper as the only official member of cast? I imagine things will have moved on by the time all the current sets are done but inserting it earlier might be a problem.

    • James

      September 6th, 2025 - 3:57pm

I thought the animations were now being commissioned in batches rather than one at a time. Speed up the releases.
I wasn’t suggesting they had done it and not released it and keeping quiet just meant it was rumoured along side underwater menace. As that’s been released I was meaning surely that be next if was the same team.

If they do go down the road of releasing evry 60s set with a story missing done via recon that would be Marco Polo for s1, wheel for s5 and pirates for s6 for definite. S4 either smugglers or highlanders. But I can’t see dmp being the missed one for s3 as the size of its like2 stories even with 3 eps in the archive. With myth makers also rumoured this year I’d suggest massacre being the missing recon.

If they do have 2 or 3 teams working on them in the new deal/structure of multiple commissions this would get them released and time for solo release before adding to collection sets.

Eccleston set suggested as it’s the first set for New Who. I thought s2 as Tennnat set and he is popular so would sell. But was pointed out if didn’t sell well would be a waste to do a set not at the beginning. It has been rereleased on a s1-4 set recently so no work really needed. Just a few sofa watches to do. Eccleston unsure if he would return for this, Billie definitely, Camile, and other guest stars of s1 and some classic companions/docs could also do to mix it up.

    • Prof Horner

      September 6th, 2025 - 4:54pm

I don’t think there are any Tele snaps for The Massacre,James. Same with The Myth Makers. So it would be hard seeing a recon for The Massacre. As said a while back , I think the last three will be one a year. I think after the colour seasons , we will get five and six, with Wilderness Years in between those two.

    • Scotel

      September 6th, 2025 - 5:26pm

The Underwater Menace team went on to The Savages.

The new system (which I would note only starts with whatever they are currently working on assuming it even went into effect) is to help reduce downtime between releases so while they are wrapping up one project they can start on the next. It’s not about multiple teams and with us hearing the BBC aren’t interested in more 3D animations we’re down to just one. If we get another team then that’s great but that’s not an assumption we can make. Each project takes over a year to make, when I’m estimating three releases that’s up on the two we’d be getting on the old system.

You need to remember these animations take time to make. The Daleks’ Master Plan being the length of two stories would also affect the length of time it takes to animate. The Evil of the Daleks was 18 months, imagine how long a 12/13 parter would be. There’s a reason I picked out three four parters.

    • Gordon

      September 7th, 2025 - 12:41am

It’s my understanding that they may get commissioned to get multiple stories but it will still be animated 1 at a time. Previously they would do 1 then it get released then the commission happens for the next one happens a few weeks or months later. Going forward they will get a commission of say 2-3 stories or whatever the number is and then the pre production team starts on the first one. While the main animation team is working away on the first one the pre production team will start work on the next one and as soon as story one has finished there is no waiting around on post production or releasing it before starting. they go straight on to the next one.

Sad news indeed about the passing of Christopher H Bidmead , though he had a good innings. Bidmead along with Derrick Sherwin has always fascinated me. Both had their own unique take on Doctor Who . Sherwin with season 7 and Bidmead with season 18. One wonders how different the history of the series would have been if they stayed around for a bit longer. Anyway RIP Christopher and thank you.

A kind man, a great writer and a tragic loss to the sci-fi community.

Legopolis, castrovalva and frontios are all pretty good stories. Plus his script editing work on series 18 is pretty big factor in the changes that were needed at that time. Doctor who was definetly a richer place with his involvement.
