BBC Studios announces Season 23 as the next installment in the DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION Blu-ray range

BBC Studios continues to offer Doctor Who fans the opportunity to build their own home archive on Blu-ray. The first jam-packed release for Colin Baker’s Sixth Doctor, Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 23, debuts on 7th October 2019 (Revised from 23rd September.)

In 1985, Doctor Who was taken off the air for an 18 month hiatus. When it returned, it was with an ambitious fourteen-episode adventure, The Trial of a Time Lord. The epic story saw the Doctor on trial for his life, with the court examining his adventures with companion Peri (Nicola Bryant) and looking to his future escapades with new companion Melanie (Bonnie Langford).

This season saw the return of popular villain Sil, along with the Master, the towering robot Drathro and the plant-based Vervoid monsters. With the Inquisitor (Lynda Bellingham) overseeing the proceedings, it was the Valeyard (Michael Jayston) who proved the greatest threat, hiding his own sinister motives for wanting the Doctor’s downfall.

With all episodes newly remastered from the best available sources, this Blu-ray box set also contains extensive and exclusive special features which include:

  • Extended edits – of all fourteen episodes
  • Terror of the Vervoids – four-part standalone edition with updated Fx
  • Immersive 5.1 surround sound & isolated scores – on all 14 broadcast episodes
  • Behind the Sofa – new episodes with Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant, Bonnie Langford, Mark Strickson, Frazer Hines and Matthew Waterhouse
  • The Writers’ Room – Eric Saward, Philip Martin, Christopher H Bidmead & Waly K Daly discuss the ‘Lost’ Season 23
  • The Doctor Who Cookbook Revisited – brave cast members tackle their original recipes from the 1980s official cookbook
  • The Doctor’s Table – join Colin Baker and friends for dinner
  • In Conversation – Matthew Sweet chats to companion Bonnie Langford
  • Unseen studio footage
  • Rare archive treats
  • Convention footage
  • Blu-ray trailer
  • HD photo galleries
  • Scripts, costume designs & more in the PDF Archive

The six-disc box set also includes hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD.

DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION – SEASON 23 stars Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant and Bonnie Langford with Michael Jayston and Lynda Bellingham. Guest appearances include Anthony Ainley, Nalbil Shaban, Joan Sims, Christopher Ryan, Michael Craig, Honor Blackman, Tony Selby and Geoffrey Hughes.

Well the latest on season 23 for me is my copy from zoom never arrived. I ordered from amazon last night as I’m pretty sure it’s not coming. Got a bit of a surprise this morning as Zoom got in contact with me this morning offering me a refund or replacement as it should have arrived by now. As my amazon copy is due today I just took the refund. Not saying I’m not going to order from them again as s26 and all 3 versions of the faceless ones (dvd, blu, steel) are already ordered and paid through them. I am going to be wary of them. They normally are pretty good. It’s strike 1 with them. I’m going to see how quickly they deliver s26 before ordering the next release

Ask for a re-credit on future purchases as a gesture of goodwill given how disappointed you are, it’s always worth a punt. HMV have copies, you’ll pay a quid more though. Do Argos have copies too..?

Tbh I’m happy enough with just a refund and I don’t think zoom do credit. My copy of s23 came through and I had a blast last night watching mysterious planet

I was ordering few movies from Zoom and the delivery was pretty slow. It tooks 2-3 weeks to deliever to Poland and there is no tracking system involved. When I order from Amazon I get the goodies delievered within a week and they are informing me where the package is. S23 actually came a day early, so it was a nice surprise.

Glad you got one in the end Gordon!
I’m wondering if Zoom is having some issues with its systems lately. I got an email from them yesterday to say the The Specials steelbook had been despatched. But, I’ve just looked in my orders on the site and it’s still showing as queueing. Hasn’t even changed to “sent to warehouse” yet. Wonder if people are getting despatch emails when they haven’t been sent out? Will wait to see if it turns up in next few days.

Well I got home today and it had been posted through the door. But status still hasn’t changed from “queueing” on the website. First time that’s happened before.

Mine arrived last Sunday – always reliable service from Amazon UK. While not my favourite season, I want to support the range as they possess an exceptional range of extras and bonus features. Fortunately, there isn’t a Doctor which I dislike.

I agree, there are box sets I’m not too bothered about but I will buy them all to support the range as the amount of new extras and care put into the packaging make them superb value for money at £40. For example, I nearly didn’t buy Season 18 as it’s not one of my favourites, plus wasn’t happy that it had been selected to come out so early in the range, certainly not straight after its preceding season-but I’m so glad I did as it’s a marvellous set, packed with hours of glorious new content-plus, that iconic K-9 & Company title sequence in HD! What’s not to love?

I also am buying the seasons that aren’t as good imo because I want to support the line, and i enjoy the extrs. I am looking foward to having the complete collection on my shelves eventually!

I love classic Who, so I want to have the complete set. Barely dodged a bullet with S12, cause I’ve bought it maybe one day before it went out of stock. So I preorder the new box sets the day they are announced now.

I prefer the pre-JNT Doctor Who, but I want to have it all. I always wanted to get into owning the classic series, but the 150 DVD boxes sounded too excesive for me and I told myself that I will start collecting once they make them into a seasons. These boxsets are basically made for me, so I feel the obligation to get them all 🙂

Season 19 didnt have a writers room documentary, only season 18 & 23 at present until season 26. It was the Season 18 boxset that had it and it was on the bonus disc of that set.

I’m about six episodes into the extended version of ‘Trial’ at present. Not bad I think, though I’m not sure the additional scenes add much to the story.

The standalone version of ‘Terror of the Vervoids’, on the other hand, is well fun and is much more enjoyable without the trial scenes. Wish they had done standalone versions for ‘Mysterious Planet’ and possibly ‘Mindwarp’ as well.

Might have been impossible with Mindwarp as it’s very vague as to whats real, whats false and whats warped mind antics. Then of course you have the TARDIS appearing at the end and the Timelords apparently killing Peri inhabited Kiv.

    • Gordon

      October 11th, 2019 - 11:20pm

I don’t know if you could do mysterious planet. The bleeped stuff and it ending in a cliffhanger with the question on why the timelords involvement would need to be worked around

    • TARDIS Traveller

      October 12th, 2019 - 12:05am

The bleeped stuff could be dubbed over, Glitz says the matrix alot in the ultimate foe. And I always thought the ending on the lingering questions works more effectively. We as the audience already know who what and why so the irony of being a step ahead of the doctor and the danger his meddling is gunna lead to elevates the story.

    • MIKK89

      October 12th, 2019 - 12:47am

I like what they did with ‘Terror of the Vervoids’ as I feel it doesnt take anything away from yhe story… and to have a New Who style title sequence. Plus I may be wrong but, the scene that the Matrix shows as being tampered with has either had an alternate version or been left out which to me kept the whodunnit style fresh.

I have felt that each Collection improves on the last and Colin Baker’s final run has never looked better. Cant wait for Season 26 and the rest of the series…

    • philip shaw

      October 12th, 2019 - 9:00am

I agree with MIKK89 the removal of the tampered Doctor with axe apparently chopped up communications in vervoids wasn’t missed, you couldn’t do this with Mindwarp because as i mentioned before you only suspected what was Valeyard fakery, and Mysterious planet was too trial centric to remove it all…

    • I Cotterill

      October 12th, 2019 - 12:32pm

I had seen some fan edits of ‘Mysterious Planet’ and ‘Mindwarp’ without the trial scenes. ‘Mysterious Planet’ can work on its own, while ‘Mindwarp’ would require some dubbing and having a huge chunk of episode 2 cut out.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      October 13th, 2019 - 8:25am

I have done all the extended episodes, I thought it was brilliant. The picture and sound were gorgeous just like I hoped for.
Episode one feels very different; I can understand the cuts however, I feel it gives away a little too much, too early. Also when you watch the transmitted version the Doctor/Peri relationship is much friendlier than series 22 yet this version does not have that same feel
I loved the little booklet in the box set too, a lot about the making of Trial is well documented but it was very interesting and there were a few things I did not know. It is shame Holmes never got to write the proper ending
It is a great series sandwiched between two very weak ones in my opinion

The number of discs on dvd required would make it more expensive to produce than the blu rays. You would need a good 11-12 dvd discs minimum to fit everything on s23 on it compared with 6 on blu ray

Stopped using Zavvi now after a really bad experience recently. Ordered a blu ray, one of the discs was faulty. They made it as difficult as possible to return the item and by the time they agreed it was out of stock and had to be refunded. They wouldn’t accept the return without a printed copy of their return form which I had no means to print. They even suggested asking my friends and family. Once I pressed them and pointed out that as the item was faulty, it was their responsibility to organise the return and refund and that if they weren’t willing to organise the return I expected them to simply refund me they decided to send me the form out in the post. I completed the form and attached the label they provided to the return only to then find out, when trying to return said item at the Post Office, that the label I had been provided with was no prepaid. I then contacted Zavvi for a prepaid label and was told that they would reimburse me for 15% of the cost of the postage but not pay for it. Again I explained that the item was faulty, I was no returning it by choice and therefore not liable to pay to provide the return postage. They then instructed me to go the website and submit a support ticket with a photo of the postage receipt to receive a refund. When I tried to do this my ticket was rejected as the attached photo was too big for their system to accept. Once again I complained and then got told to send the ticket via their Facebook page. Needless to say I’m still waiting for the postage cost refund. Severely disappointed in the experience I had with a company I have been using for orders for many years and now, unless I have no choice, I won’t be ordering from them again. I’m only sorry to see that you have no other choice; hopefully your item is dispatched and arrives soon.

Have just cancelled with Zavvi as they have told me they are awaiting stock from suppliers but no ETA. Have found one on eBay dispatching from Australia and only $10 more than what Zavvi were charging. Should be with me by end the week.

    • Tegan’s distant cousin

      October 14th, 2019 - 12:19am

Similar to Mark, I gave up on Zavvi and ordered one through eBay that was only $10 more. The previous two box sets I ordered from Zavvi arrived in terrible condition anyway, and Zavvi made it extremely difficult to get refunds (although my persistence prevailed). It hasn’t arrived yet, but it was the same seller I got season 10 from and unlike Zavvi, they packaged it securely so that it arrived in excellent condition.

It’s incredibly frustrating, but I’d advise anybody in Australia to avoid using Zavvi if possible and hunt around on eBay instead.

      Hey,

I ordered my copy of Season 23 from the hive.co.uk. It was about 10-15 dollars more expensive then Zavvi but not a single dent or scratch. It was so well packaged. If you don’t mind paying slightly more and can’t find one on ebay, I’d recommend them.

It only took a week to come from release date as well (admittedly it felt really long cause I was looking forward to this set).

I’ve so far made my way through the original versions of parts 1-8, picture looks great considering it’s just an upscale, the colours stand out the most. The titles are extra vibrant, and the model shots are breathtaking! The doctors Table was such a nice feature also.
I’ve only watched behind the sofa for parts 1-4 but I love Frazer, Mark and Matthew on a sofa together! I’m eagerly excited to take a look at the new vervoid edit and the writers room.

Has anyone noticed any weird audio issues? I’ve been listen on quieter sections you can hear the audio in the background before it happens on screen. Hard to explain, but it’s like a faint echo of the upcoming sound BEFORE the actual audio happens with the visuals. I haven’t noticed this on any other release before. It’s even more noticeable on headphones. I’ve only watched discs 1&2 so far, but it’s happening on both of them.

Could be my player, but I haven’t noticed this on any other release.

      October 10th, 2019 - 12:17pm

Lee, I noticed this ‘effect’ for many many years when listening to Vinyl over headphones.

It’s exactly as you described – hearing the start of the track very faintly before the normal level audio begins.

I have no idea of the cause, but I ignore it.

    • Graham

      October 10th, 2019 - 1:44pm

I’ve noticed a sound issue on disc 5 during episode 3 about 5 and half minutes in just sounds warped before going OK haven’t watched the rest on this disc yet

    • Rob W

      October 10th, 2019 - 6:11pm

That ‘echo’ effect is caused by print through from the analogue tapes I think.

    • Lee

      October 11th, 2019 - 10:08am

I’m considering sending it back and seeing if replacement is the same. Thought it might be my player, but I’ve not heard it on any other blu-ray or DVD before. It’s so jarring once you’ve heard it. It’s really noticeable even just coming through TV speakers. Really odd!

    • Lee

      October 12th, 2019 - 3:22pm

I’ve been going through trying to work out the sound issue, and it only occurs on anything with mono audio (main story + extra studio footage), but anything with new surround or 5.1 doesn’t suffer with it (docs and other extras). Terror of the Vervoids special edition has no echo, but watching the original story in Mono has the echo.

      So, it’s either 1 of 3 things:
      1) This echo was on the original broadcast audio, yet I don’t recall ever hearing it before.
      2) There’s something messed up with the mono tracks on these discs.
      3) My player acts weird when playing Mono tracks.
Going to try ripping a disc onto my PC and playing it to see if it happens on another player. That way I’ll know it’s my player acting weird.

    • Rob W

      October 12th, 2019 - 4:46pm

It’s probably print through on the original Mono analogue tapes and cannot be remedied. The soundtracks are DTS-HD MA and of a much higher quality than on the previous DVDs.

The Anologue tapes were remixed to 5.1 and the echo might be mixed so it’s not as noticeable.

I don’t think it’s your player but I do think it’s an unavoidable issue.

    • Lee

      October 12th, 2019 - 6:43pm

Does the print through happen on the other boxsets then? Must admit, it’s the first time I’ve ever heard it. All my other boxsets are packed up right now, as I’m getting ready to move house, so can’t play any others to see if they have it too.

Surprised nobody else has noticed it though, as once you hear it, it really stands out and is easy to spot.

So long as it isn’t faulty, and I don’t have to send it back, then I’m okay with it. 😀

    • Rob W

      October 12th, 2019 - 8:35pm

You could email [email protected] and ask if they know whether there is a definite fault with the Mono audio.

    • Lee

      October 12th, 2019 - 10:19pm

Cheers Rob, I’ve dropped them an email. In the meantime, I’ll try and rule out my player. Haven’t got another Blu-ray player except a BD drive on my PC for ripping. So, I’ll rip it to pc sometime this week, and see if I’m hearing the issue on there. I’m thinking it might be my player though, as it’s happening on every disc, and nobody else has reported it. I can see how one disc could have dodgy audio, but all of them seems unlikely.

Will let everyone know when I find out what’s causing it!???

    • Lee

      October 16th, 2019 - 6:11pm

Been emailing the BBC back and forth but nothing to report yet.

Zoom will only open an investigation into a missing delivery ten days after the despatch date. I was getting worried about my copy too, it only turned up yesterday, and it was in seriously battered condition. The Zoom cardboard parcel thing was in one of those plastic bags from Royal Mail saying ‘sorry your parcel got badly damaged and delayed’, so it wasn’t Zoom’s fault. I contacted them and they sent out a replacement as soon as I sent a photo of my proof of return postage. Hoping I have better luck this time – and hope yours turns up with no more problems than the delay, Gordon!

Hi yes I have had the same issue. I have a samsung uhd but also a Panasonic Blu Ray player and don’t work at all. Give up with amazon after the second replacement.

Are we saying Amazon get a different product to others then? Did you buy one from another retailer that did work Ok?

    • Leigh

      October 9th, 2019 - 4:58pm

I got mine from HMV, same with previous seasons they all worked on my Samsung UHD player but this one just spits back out saying it cannot be played, so amazon don’t get different product am guessing they have changed something with this seasons discs where certain players won’t accept it.

Leigh, I reckon that the creators of the discs have authored the discs differently. Disappointing!

Plays Ok on my Panasonic 4K player… so far! Only up to ‘Mindwarp’.

      October 10th, 2019 - 12:24pm

I have tried all 6 discs in 4 different machines, so far all load and play. But I haven’t watched all the content.

      For reference those machines are:

      – Oppo 203 (4k player)
      – Oppo 103 (Blu Ray player)
      – Marantz UD 5007 (Universal Player, not 4k)
      – Denon DVD-A1HD (Univeral Player, not 4k)

Maybe the Samsung (and Sony from what I read elsewhere) players need a firmware update?

I use my Xbox One as my blue ray player, no issues on any set so far.

      1. Doctor in distress (but will be on season 22)
      2. 1985 hiatus media coverage (also moved to season 22)
      3. Terry Wogan children in need 1985 (moved to season 22)
      4. Lenny Henry sketch 1985 (season 22 hopefully)

    • Anonymous

Why would we not get Season 3? Even in its current state it’s got more episodes than anything from McCoy’s era.

    • The Flying Shark

      October 9th, 2019 - 8:05am

It would be absolutely ridiculous not to release Season 3. Sure, it will probably be left until last or the last year due to the large amount of gaps, and they won’t all be animated in time, but basic telesnaps recons will do until they are animated, and the discs can be swapped hopefully.

No, but it wouldn’t be as it was out in 1985 so it will be moved to season 22. Much better place for it.

Won’t be buying, if they keep forgetting all these things from the DVDs.

They don’t forget about features on dvds, they are moving them about so they are more in keeping with the season and years things came out.

      October 6th, 2019 - 12:55pm

Everything will be included eventually. They are moving things around. Nothing is getting forgotten

    • BtsR

      October 6th, 2019 - 4:21pm

Like people say theyve not forgotten them. If you look at the special feature “On Traget with Ian Marter ” which was on the Carnival of monsters dvd wasnt in the season 10 boxset as it was moved to Season 12 on the sontaran experiment disc. The same with “The Boy with the golden star” was from season 18 dvds but moved to season 19 and the same with “stripped for action” & “tomorrows times” features being on the doctors final seasons.

    • The Flying Shark

      October 6th, 2019 - 8:10pm

Doctor in Distress is easily found on YouTube. To not buy this wonderful set at a bargain price simply because three minutes have been cut is an absolutely stupid decision for you to make.

      October 7th, 2019 - 4:13pm

To understand. Doctor in distress is the highlight of Season 23. It’s 3 minute of absolute heaven with beautiful vocals, great synth and lyric genius. To not add such beauty to a set is crazy!.

    • Gordon

      October 7th, 2019 - 10:32pm

Except it was released in March 15th 1985 which was during near the end of season 22. Chronologically it fits on season 22

Just got home from seeing The Joker (great film by the way.) to find my parcel containing season 23 on my doorstep, OUTSIDE MY HOUSE. Shame I’ve got work tomorrow. I want to binge watch it all.
This was the first season of doctor who I can remember watching, back in 86’ (the day before my 5th birthday.). So it holds a special place in my heart.

Zoom works great if you are in UK. I was thinking about ordering Doctor Who from them, but in the last couple of months I was getting some other movies from them and the delievery is around 3 weeks to Poland, while Amazon is usually here in a week. So I think I will stick to Amazon with the Doctors.

I placed a spare disc tray in my boxset on top of the 6 trays so I can fit the last adventure “The brink of death” big finish audio. So that way I can have the tv story and the proper regeneration story all together in one set.

It was a present from amazon, i have contacted the dvd support and they got back to me twice but nothing since then :/ problems are that when i go to play episode four, it has a total visual/audio fit and the screen is broken colours and the sounds is also – this happens with a special feature originally made for the dvd version also
