BBC Studios announces Season 23 as the next installment in the DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION Blu-ray range

BBC Studios continues to offer Doctor Who fans the opportunity to build their own home archive on Blu-ray. The first jam-packed release for Colin Baker’s Sixth Doctor, Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 23, debuts on 7th October 2019 (Revised from 23rd September.)

In 1985, Doctor Who was taken off the air for an 18 month hiatus. When it returned, it was with an ambitious fourteen-episode adventure, The Trial of a Time Lord. The epic story saw the Doctor on trial for his life, with the court examining his adventures with companion Peri (Nicola Bryant) and looking to his future escapades with new companion Melanie (Bonnie Langford).

This season saw the return of popular villain Sil, along with the Master, the towering robot Drathro and the plant-based Vervoid monsters. With the Inquisitor (Lynda Bellingham) overseeing the proceedings, it was the Valeyard (Michael Jayston) who proved the greatest threat, hiding his own sinister motives for wanting the Doctor’s downfall.

With all episodes newly remastered from the best available sources, this Blu-ray box set also contains extensive and exclusive special features which include:

  • Extended edits – of all fourteen episodes
  • Terror of the Vervoids – four-part standalone edition with updated Fx
  • Immersive 5.1 surround sound & isolated scores – on all 14 broadcast episodes
  • Behind the Sofa – new episodes with Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant, Bonnie Langford, Mark Strickson, Frazer Hines and Matthew Waterhouse
  • The Writers’ Room – Eric Saward, Philip Martin, Christopher H Bidmead & Waly K Daly discuss the ‘Lost’ Season 23
  • The Doctor Who Cookbook Revisited – brave cast members tackle their original recipes from the 1980s official cookbook
  • The Doctor’s Table – join Colin Baker and friends for dinner
  • In Conversation – Matthew Sweet chats to companion Bonnie Langford
  • Unseen studio footage
  • Rare archive treats
  • Convention footage
  • Blu-ray trailer
  • HD photo galleries
  • Scripts, costume designs & more in the PDF Archive

The six-disc box set also includes hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD.

DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION – SEASON 23 stars Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant and Bonnie Langford with Michael Jayston and Lynda Bellingham. Guest appearances include Anthony Ainley, Nalbil Shaban, Joan Sims, Christopher Ryan, Michael Craig, Honor Blackman, Tony Selby and Geoffrey Hughes.

Surprised at the lack of comments compared to the series 10 set. At least 200 comments in the first day for 10. This boxset looks very promising.

What Blu-Ray do you hope for next? I think it’s gotta be Season 26, that would otherwise just be unfair on poor McCoy who needs a bit of love.

I’m meeting Micheal Jayston next month so this will definitley pop into conversation.

I would love to see some more 70’s seasons such as season 13 or 14 or maybe 7 or 9.
However a McCoy season would be nice to see.
My predictions are that we will get season 26 in early December and season 22 in February and then season 6 in May ( though if they don’t animate the space pirates they would probably do a cut down recon like they did on the edge destruction DVD)

Yeah we 100% are not going to get Season 22 next year as that would make no sense given the release schedule they have stuck with so far. Next year we are pretty much guaranteed a Tom Baker season (I personally think they will go with 15 as we haven’t had any with Louise Jameson yet), a second Peter Davison set (possibly Season 21), a second Jon Pertwee set (my guess is Season 9 or 11) and a first B&W set, (my guess is Season 2 or 6, with a recon of Crusade or Space Pirates).

Oh this is the One .

    14 episodes
    14 Extended editions
    4 re edited editions.

thats the equivalent of 32 episodes worth. And these extra extras on top of the very substantial extras Trial already had. And 5.1 on Mindwarp. Did Mark Ayres find the tapes, or use his Sheer brilliance to make it 5.1 (although he has done this brilliance on season 10 on Planet)

Staggering all this lovely stuff. and Scrubbed up posh like, for the Blu ray .

    wonderful.

Fantastic Trailer. Colin has always been very lovley to meet.

Sadly the tapes haven’t been found, but Mark Ayers will use some voodoo to recreate them for the isolated score and surround sound mix.

      June 18th, 2019 - 6:20pm

Perhaps Mark has managed to get a copy of the Mindwarp sheet music and redone it himself and redubbed this onto the episodes because last time I hear the Mindwarp score was lost…

      June 18th, 2019 - 3:43pm

Which isn’t really necessary. We don’t need the same story twice.

    • The Mysterious Stranger

      June 18th, 2019 - 4:36pm

Considering a lot of people have been eager to see each segment without the trail scenes, especially Terror of the Vervoids, then yes, we do need the same story twice.

It’s no different to the various extended of special editions we’ve had over the years.

    • Lee

      June 18th, 2019 - 9:03pm

What’s wrong with having two versions? You don’t have to watch it, but it’s nice to give people more extras who want the choice.
Is having more extras a bad thing?

    • Sean Bassett

      June 18th, 2019 - 10:58pm

More extras isn’t a bad thing, I just personally don’t get the appeal of removing the story arc. Each to their own though.

    • Anonymous

      June 19th, 2019 - 7:48am

I mean they could have included it on the original disc by use of seamless branching

    • Gordon

      June 19th, 2019 - 12:40pm

The vervoids special edition is a new edit so seamless branching wouldn’t work for it. Trying to fit on the episodes, extended versions the new stand alone version and also all the extras would make it a very compressed disc. Giving it its own disc would give it less compression and it’s not as if it’s the only thing that will be on that disc anyway

Most likely last. It seems with all the recent animations that Season 4 will be the first one. Season 3 will most likely be the very last one with all the animations that need doing and even then it may not even be released depending on if they animate them all in time, which is quite unlikely

      June 18th, 2019 - 3:29pm

Once they have a full season to remaster would be my guess.

    • The Flying Shark

      June 18th, 2019 - 3:32pm

They’ve confirmed they won’t leave the black and white till last-they need to get the extras recorded as soon as they can as, with all due respect, it’s likely it’s someone from that era who will leave us next and, in the terms of missing episodes, it might be waiting for something that’s never going to happen.

Personally, I think Season 2 will be first for Hartnell and 6 for Troughton, as they only have one incomplete story each, and will likely never be animated. I agree the Season 4 animations are probably being done to complete the Blu-Ray range but I still think it’s a way off as if Faceless Ones is 2020, then Evil 2021, it might be 2022 when we get it, presuming they’re not doing the historicals. Season 3 will be last most likely as it has a lot of episodes and isn’t in much demand.

    • Anonymous

      June 18th, 2019 - 3:44pm

Season 1 and 2 are already effectively done as they aren’t animating Marco Polo and The Crusade (The Space Pirates has a chance but it’s probably way down the priority list).

Extras are being recorded regardless of release schedule. They don’t want to take any chances.

There are lovely sets and this one is exceptional, however I’m reluctant to buy these sets as I have spent the last Zod knows how many years buying the DVD’s and I still need a few!

These sets being series sets is great but knowing how long the classic series went on for and how much these sets are to buy not to mention their hard to find nature if you don’t get them stright away (are they limited edition or something?)

It’s a bit like you got them on VHS over 20 years?…now here are the DVD’s!…remember buying those DVD’s? look here they come again on Blu-Ray!

I didn’t want to get into the Classic Who DVDs because of the huge amount of space it all take. And I promised myself that I would only get them if they release it all in the seasons boxsets. I find it easier to buy 26 boxes than 155 single ones.

I know their availability is a bit problematic, I got mine 12th series basically one day before it run out. I would be really angry that I coulnd’t have the complete set.

I see they are presenting ‘Trial of a Time Lord’ parts 9-12 as a stand alone story as well. Sounds interesting. Couldn’t they do the same with parts 1-4 as well?

    • Tim M

      June 18th, 2019 - 3:20pm

But my understanding the is that ‘Terror of the Vervoids’ will be a stand alone story without the Trial segments. I would have thought ‘The Mysterious Planet’ could also have been a stand alone story minus the Trial segments. ‘Mindwarp’ would have been an issue admittedly.

    • JM

      June 19th, 2019 - 2:07am

If it’s not it might be due to the story being harder to separate from the Trial. Terror of the Vervoids is just a regular story, occasionally cutting to scenes of a court room with only one scene (The Doctor breaking the radio) being of relevance to the trial, which can be cut without effecting the story. (Maybe the scene where the Doctor tells Mel to stop bothering him or something in episode one-but that one doesn’t stand out as much)

Compared to the Mysterious planet, the resolution features the Doctor suddenly being silenced by the Valeyard. So…to make it a stand alone story, they would need to cut out the resolution, which is not as easy

I know some people have complained about the price with less episodes but overall I think the way the range is going each Season will be priced the same even when earlier seasons have more episodes.

For those that trade in the old dvds. You only get £4 cash at CEX for this one.
