Shouldn’t it say The Fourth Doctor, Season 1

Hey booboo Do you intend in adding the 40th anniversary Dalek boxset to the DVD list? I recently got it and I noticed that it wasn’t there on the list also do you plan to implement a way to check if you’ve got the slipcases or not because I have noticed that a lot of people don’t know stories is Genesis of the Daleks or the hand of fear have slipcases

So they’re calling it “Tom Baker season 1” now? If they name all upcoming classic blu-ray box sets in the same manner, how the hell will they handle seasons 4 and 21? Should’ve just stayed with the standard numbering system to avoid confusion.

For anyone that missed it, the Genisis of the Daleks america cinima release promo cointains a new 3d packshot of the american release. https://youtu.be/h-9XQ0os7cw.

Few interesting things here, firstly confirmation that it is 6 discs (not sure if this was known before), and it appears to be rendered as a standard case rather than a mediabook. Looks like their ditching the mediabook (at least in the US) as I don’t think they would release two different runs of a product so close together. It’s likly the finalized artwork, so the new logo is here to stay as well (but now it’s at the top and smaller, looks better in my opinion)

      April 30th, 2018 - 7:57pm

It thought that as well, but they went to the trouble of mocking up a spine and everything. That, and moving the logo to the top suggests there won’t be a cardboard bit at the bottom. I think it could still go either way in the UK though.

42 pages of the Wall’s Dalek’s Death Ray
12 pages of the Nestle 1975 promotion

I can see them improving colour in the Pertwee stories that was originally in colour but having Colour in originally b and w stories? Not going to happen. It isn’t the restoration team’s remit to colour originally broadcast b and w episodes. The budget would be better served in filling in the missing episode gaps. The budget on these sets won’t stretch to both

    • the_4th_doc

      April 26th, 2018 - 10:22pm

Babelcolour, who worked on the colour for Mind of Evil episode 1, said doing a full episode ’nearly killed him,’ so doing 30+ would likely be very time consuming and expensive. Untill colorization gets easier, it’s probably not going to happen.

I wonder…If they were to release ‘Season One’ on blu-ray, they would consider naming the first three stories 100,000bc, The Mutants and Inside the Spaceship. I don’t like ‘Inside the Spaceship’ as a title, as I don’t regard the Tardis as a spaceship. The Edge of Destruction sounds better.

but then again there is a doctor who story called the mutants

    • 100,000 BC

      April 10th, 2018 - 11:40pm

There’s already a ‘The Mutants’, with Jon Pertwee.
I think ‘The Edge Of Destruction’ possibly has a better ring to it than ‘Inside the Spaceship’.
As for the first story… there’s reasonable justification to the idea that it’s two separate stories, with episode one ‘An Unearthly Child’ having a different plot and setting to episodes 2-4, ‘100,000BC’ (despite being written by the same person and leading into each other plotwise – it’s like the way that Heaven Sent/Hell Bent are linked).
If we are to say that it is one story, I guess the unearthly child appears in all 4 parts, whereas only 3 of the episodes are set in 100,000BC so again the existing DVD’s title wins.

    • Tim M

      April 21st, 2018 - 7:00pm

Maybe ‘An Unearthly Child’ should be regarded as a one episode story like ‘Mission to the Unknown’, and the other three episodes regarded as ‘100,000BC’. A 3 parter like ‘Planet of Giants’. That would mean 30 stories and not 29 represent the Hartnell era, and more importantly, mess up the order of subsequent stories. So ‘The Pirate Planet’ would be story 100 instead of ‘The Stones of Blood’ for example. 🙂

with the original version of enemy and web I believe they were scanned/upscaled to hd then the restoration work was done and then downgraded back down to sd for the dvd. Could be similar without the downgrading. Not sure as the restoration team haven’t been 100 forward on how they are restoring it. Is there a specific place to comment on the use of the wrong logo?
It will jar with the new rebrand, why have a logo on the box that never appears on screen on the contents?

I agree. Each set should use the logo that was appearing on screen at the time.
It would be great if they could continue these on for the new series seasons as well. Perhaps with decent extras this time?

    • Yunie

      March 26th, 2018 - 10:54am

I definitely agree that using the new logo doesn’t make sense.

Although for slightly different reasons. The new logo is supposed to represent the upcoming series and new doctor. Using it with the classic series seems like it takes away from the promotion and reveal that came with the logo (i.e. using it elsewhere before the new season actually airs).

    • Anonymous

      April 4th, 2018 - 1:45am

I like what they’re doing, using one logo for all eras helps the show seem like all ONE brand, not split up into all these differing logos, that can put people of due to lack of brand recognition. The entire show is unified under one brand, like a far better version of that ‘doctor who universe’ branding theyve been playing with in recent years.

Oh yeah true but they could just name the season after The Doctor that has the most number of episodes in the season and have both Doctors on the artwork, for example “The Fifth Doctor: Season 4” (Season 21) because The Sixth Doctor only has one episode in that season and then the artwork could have a picture of The Doctor but one half will be The Fifth Doctor and the other half is The Sixth Doctor and then some sort of effect in the middle of them to seperate them so it dosent look too wierd and so it could look like hes regenerating and then all the enemies in the middle like this release. Im not complaining though its just an idea lol

Although it should totally say Season 12, I can understand why they might choose to put Tom Baker Season 1 for the less dedicated fan – they might be put off by thinking they’ve missed a bunch of seasons before this one, as opposed to realising this is the perfect jumping on point for his Doctor/Classic Who for many. Do you think it is the US release which will only say Tom Baker Season 1, or will it be the same here in the UK, too?

It says SEASON 12 on the UK one. The Australian one is still unknown.

I think its a good idea, it helps a casual viewer buyer realise immediately that this is the same brand, whereas in recent years, I feel the brand recognition has really suffered due to so many different logos/branding styles being in circulation. I like the 3rd and 8th doctor logo, but i feel the classic figure line, for example, may have done better if it continued to stick with the recognisable (to a general audience) RTD era logo, or even updating to the matt smith one, in order to keep a sense of uniformality.

Well the reason they have been branded differently in the past was because the later series have all launched as series 1-10 so it seems odd to try and brand them all together now.

No, No, The whole things ridiculous
    Tom Baker, Season 1
Can we just call every first doctor who Season for each doctor one

I can’t wait to see how The Real Season 4 And Season 21 is like

Peter Davison Season 3 (with an episode with Colin Baker)
Patrick Troughton Season 1 (with two episodes with William Hartnell)

Should have been Season 14 from the Get-go
    Now you are confusing everything
