Doctor Who DVD / Book: Regeneration – More Details

Doctor Who Regenerations box set

With thanks to BBC Worldwide…

Doctor Who Regeneration
Available from 24 June 2013

The Doctor Who Regeneration set is a beautifully packaged, limited edition coffee table book-styled collectors’ album including six DVDs and over 10 hours of Doctor Who footage.

The collection features each Doctor’s iconic regeneration episode; from the first Doctor played by William Hartnell, exhausted after battling the Cybermen to Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor suffering from radiation that had been unleashed by the Great One (a giant spider); and from the spectacular transformation of the Ninth Doctor to David Tennant’s emotional farewell as the Tenth.

The set is adorned with superb photography from across the era and features detailed and informative accounts of each regeneration. And if that wasn’t enough, new to DVD is The Tenth Planet featuring the Doctor’s first regeneration – beautifully restored with the missing fourth episode now brought to life with stunning animation.

regeneration-set-2

Utilising the original soundtrack, off-screen photographs and a short surviving sequence of the Doctor’s regeneration the episode has been now reconstructed in animated form, incorporating the restored version of the surviving sequence.

A full list of stories included on the DVD are:

· The Tenth Planet
· The War Games
· Planet of the Spiders
· Logopolis
· The Caves of Androzani
· Time and the Rani
· Doctor Who: The Movie
· Bad Wolf & The Parting of the Ways
· The End of Time

I think the box set might contain
    1. The Dalek Invasion Of Earth Special Edition
    2. Dimensions In Time
    2. The Curse Of Fatal Death
    4. Death Comes To Time
    5. Real Time

curse of fatal death can be released, its dimensions in time that cant.

      March 28th, 2013 - 10:54pm

I think in this box set are:
Dalek invasion of earth special edition
      Earthshock special edition
And a special feture dvd featuring all the spin off storys like:
      Curse of Fatal Death
Autonomy the 3 part auton series
Shakedown with the sontarans and the rutans
      Real time
      Death comes to time
And other spin off and web cast stuff on a 2 disk set maybe? Whats your thoughts i think its highly possible!

    • gordon

      March 28th, 2013 - 11:10pm

Won’t include automy or shakedown as BBC don’t own the rights to those and Dan hall has no interest in unofficial spin offs. I think the webcast stuff if it does appear will more likely appear in shalka

    • pathdw98

      March 29th, 2013 - 12:42am

If Dan Hall isn’t interested in unofficial spin offs, How come the fan film Devious was on the war games? Surely things like shakedown would be of more interest to fans? Also, because Devious is on the dvd, is this now the official regeneration between the 2nd and 3rd doctors?(with the other doctor)

    • gordon

      March 29th, 2013 - 12:53am

That was included for historical reasons as it was the last time jon played the doctor.

yes so it must be episodes completed with animation

Well if it isn’t something new & fresh it will be a bit pointless buying it! If the details eventually released give a fantastic package I’ll fork out – Just as long as it doesn’t become ‘The Regurgitation Box Set’…

If they are random stories,it could be that they may use this as an excuse to re-issue other dvds as part of the fiftieth anniversary by covering one release for each doctor. Incidentally can i ask, will they put episodes 2 and 3 of the underwater menace together as part of a reconstruction on the ice warriors release. It would be ideal.

      March 25th, 2013 - 1:14pm

I think underwater menace will almost certainly have animation as Frazer Hines said in the last DWM he had recorded a new commentary for it.

If it was going to be recon only, it would have been like galaxy 4 with no commentary IMO.

  • Andrew Shaw

    March 24th, 2013 - 7:40pm

In really hope they don’t put all the episodes due for release off because of this as I wont be buying they should put missing episodes in but what I would do is put the first and last episode of every Doctor in it or do something to stop them getting more money out of us like releasing special editions, I don’t buy them I might when I have all DVDs released but I might get The Azttecs as it says it has Galaxy 4 on it.

Worth the buy for the galaxy 4 episode alone. Which is the real reason for buying again anyway.Plus its reconstructed in a way so you get a feel for the whole story.

    • gordon

      March 25th, 2013 - 11:14am

I wouldn’t say its the only reason to buy it. Aztecs got a better restoration and looks much better

    • THE ERGON

      March 26th, 2013 - 1:11pm

I,m not suggesting the restoration of the aztecs isn,t better, just that the galaxy 4 episode resells the dvd to those who didn,t buy it first time.

Is POM Pyramids of Mars? If so then yes I think the picture could be made a little better and a good making of.

    • Connor

      March 25th, 2013 - 4:39am

I think yes but not rereleased before dalek invasion of earth,Earthshock and the mind robber! Its a good story and the cover could be a little better and the special features need a little more and more clearer picture quality. But iv already got the story but i would definitely buy it again if it got rereleased 🙂

    • Lachie

      March 25th, 2013 - 6:05am

Yeah i think its one of the best releases. I do hope for a Dalek Invasion of Earth release and i also hope for an Earthshock release, but that’s only because there 2003 releases and there covers aren’t in my opinion the best. I do like updated DVD Covers so it fits in with the collection a little better though and the 40th anniversary logo does not fit well at all for Australian releases.

    • Connor

      March 25th, 2013 - 6:30am

Yea in Australia were i live, the rainbow 40th annirevsary logo looks terrible! And if you lived in Australia and had that on your shelf you would want that changed too since it dosent match the other doctor who DVDs. So hopefully they do get a rerelease and get better covers for region 4 people sakes! I totally agree with you lachie 😉

    • Lachie

      March 25th, 2013 - 11:54am

having said that though i think Earth Shock and The Dalek Invasion of Earth are perhaps the only 2, i rather like releases like The Mind Robber, Pyramids of Mars, Horror of Fang Rock and The Leisure Hive its just that 40th Anniversary logo!! haha i live in Sydney, Australia and l’ve been collecting classic who only since last year so Special Edition releases are awesome for me! but for others i can understand why there would be no point for re-releasing them. Besides older releases are super cheap at JB Hi Fi right now 😛

    • celestial toymaker

      March 25th, 2013 - 3:49pm

a POM SE would be amazing including a pyramid documentary similar to what they did to the aztecs

    • Connor

      March 25th, 2013 - 8:15pm

I live in Sydney too 🙂 and i shop at jbhifi aswell, i started collecting doctor who dvds 2 years ago and ive got 102! I live in blue mountain district.

    • Gordon

      March 27th, 2013 - 7:22am

I do feel it is worth mentioning that better cover does not factor in the decision by dan hall/restoration team on whether a title should/shouldnt be given the special edition treatment.

    • Lachie

      March 27th, 2013 - 9:39am

I think it would be stupid if all they would do is a cover haha Gordon you are completely right, now to think of things they could do to improve Earthshock and Dalek Invasion of Earth Connor! haha 🙂 i live in the Hornsby Shire and i have a good 64 from what is probably now 75% of a years worth of collecting. However l’m only collecting 1-5 Doctors i just can’t stand Doctors 6 or 7 besides that i got Doctor 8 done already from Revisitations 1 haha 😀 l’ve got only 5 left from Doctor 3 and 4 i mean they are the greatest for me 🙂

  • matparks08

    March 23rd, 2013 - 10:43pm

If this is about the regeneration of Dr Who as a series, could it be a box set featuring series 1-6? The show ‘regenerated in 2005 after all’, other series get box sets with the new series added on year after year (supernatural, smallville, for example!) and as we haven’t had one for a couple of years now???? Only a thought, and may be in line with the current price tag too!

    • drjakeyoung

they already did that last year. (only region 1)

    • James

      March 28th, 2013 - 7:57pm

Actually, it could well be the Specials through to series 6/7. The only multi-series boxset out presently is the series 1-4 set; a Regeneration boxset could cover the Specials and the first couple of Matt Smith series, and be about that price (although it would definitely be more than the 6 discs proposed elsewhere).

  • the astronaut of death

    March 23rd, 2013 - 6:27pm

I think there are two options that they could put in this box set

    1. the tenth planet
    2.the war games
    3.planet of the spiders
    4.Logopolis
    5.the caves of androzani
    6.time and the rani
    7.doctor who movie
    8.parting of the ways
    9.end of time

or they could put in the best episode of each doctor.

    Reply
    • McGann is The Doctor

      March 23rd, 2013 - 6:58pm

The latter theory would be unlikely and pretentious, as it is neither appropriate to the title nor possible.

Ergo the best episode for each Doctor is neither definite nor official.

    • gordon

      March 23rd, 2013 - 10:49pm

I’ve actually thought it is a possibility. I don’t think it has to be regeneration stories. Have a bunch of stories showing how the show regenerated and changed over the years. It wouldn’t be the first time that they put a bunch of random stories in a set with with a very loose link. Earth story and ace adventures anybody.

    • josh smith

      March 24th, 2013 - 6:03pm

no ace adventures had a strong link they both had ace and the storylines were about her!

i wish evey story was in a box set because it makes them cheeper

    • gordon

      March 24th, 2013 - 6:50pm

Not really. Happiness patrol I would not call it an ace heavy story and I certainly wouldn’t say the story was about her. Fenric and survival are ace heavy stories hp isn’t. It was only bundled as it was 2 lesser liked stories and they could put any 2 stories that feature ace and call it ace adventures. Box sets are fine but the one thing with them they have a higher budget overall but when split the budget is actually smaller per story.

    • Ian

      March 25th, 2013 - 7:23am

It won’t be the Tenth Planet, that is not due out yet. Probably be like the Dalek and Sontaran box sets, a collection of stories.
I would be annoyed if they release one story we don’t have or a s/e of a story on this and have to pay £45.00 for it.

What’s wrong with the original planet of evil DVD? Dimensions in time won’t get released on DVD as everybody involved worked for free under strict contracts that stated that dimensions in time must never be commercially released even for charity purposes. Mind of evil is due 3rd June. Dark eyes is an audio story and there is little point putting it on DVD when there is no visuals .

Survival is awesome, you have great taste mr time and relative, a Revelation of the Daleks rerelease would be nice so they could improve the Dalek voices.

    • pathdw98

      March 24th, 2013 - 12:56am

A revelation of the daleks special edition would be a good one. As you said improved voices, but wasn’t there a problem with the subtitles or production info subs? A good enough reason for me.

    • gordon

      March 24th, 2013 - 5:38am

What’s wrong with the original voices? Roy Skelton did great voices in that one. There was a problem with layer changes on some players. worth pointing out that just about every story has had alternative effects there has always been some players that have had issues

    • time and relotive dimens

      March 25th, 2013 - 6:16pm

now Gordon planet of evil one of my favorite episode so it will be good do see it in special edition. dimensions in time should be out because they put more than 30 years in the tardis on DVD and that’s A special. also i found out about mind of evil on the future DVDs on the mind robber.com before. and finally dark eyes is another favorite of mine. ok

    • gordon

      March 25th, 2013 - 7:34pm

But for planet of evil the picture quality is as good as the restoration team are going to get it the extras are good and the dvd cover is brilliant. Just because its a good story doesn’t mean it deserves a se. There just isn’t enough reasons to do a se. Difference with dit and more than is Dimensions in time can’t be released on dvd for legal reasons and contracts signed in 93. There isn’t any legal reasons that more than can’t be released. Dit on dvd will never officially happen due to legal reasons

      March 23rd, 2013 - 7:02pm

The Master is good in it, I mean he’s always good but when him and the Doctor have the fight it’s amazing because they have been rivals for years yet it’s never come to that, not quite anyway.

    • pathdw98

      March 24th, 2013 - 1:08am

Survival is by far Anthony Ainley’s greatest performance as The Master. and as McGann is The Doctor says the fight was brilliant. if The Doctor

    March 23rd, 2013 - 9:27am

This could be a box set of DVDs with animations to replace missing episodes as it would mean the stories are now ‘regenerated’ to their full form.
If this was true I would say it would include

    The Invasion
    The Reign of Terror
    The Tenth Planet

    and possibly

    The Ice Warriors
    The Underwater Menace
    The Moonbase
    The Crusade

no! it will have around 7 sorties

    • gordon

      March 23rd, 2013 - 1:06pm

I expect the rrp to be round about 50 quid (amazons price is always cheaper) and going by previous history of brand new box sets we are looking at about 4 stories max (providing its new stories being released). Key to time had 6 stories and that had a rrp of 80 quid so I can’t see it being as much as 7.

      power of the daleks
      the highlanders
      the moon base

I’m pretty sure this is just another box of special editions. One of them I’m pretty sure is the Two Doctors since the DVD release of that recently went out of print in the U.S. (usually that happens in the U.S. right before a re-release comes out).

And that is if they decide to do a 2 doctors special edition. Last I heard was they had no current plans to do 1 as there wouldn’t be enough of an improvement in the picture quality. The original negs also no longer exist which would possibly make improvements problematic.

If it is just another special edition box set then i think the storys will be:
      The Dalek invasion of earth
      Earthshock
And if theres a third story, The Mind Robber
These storys i have chosen because of 2 reasons, 1: they need special editions. 2: these storys changed doctor who history! These are the reasons:
The dalek invasion of earth: the daleks return, susan leaves, one of the most classic storys in doctor who history.
Earthshock: Cybermen return after 8 years, Adric dies, and one of the best storys in doctor who history!
      The Mind Robber: ?

If it is a box set of rereleases I don’t think it will be special editions more likely it will be just be repackaging. Doesn’t make sence to stop doing box sets for the special editions and start to do them singular for almost a year then do another box set before going back to singular. Also I think if they were to do a dalek invasion of earth they wouldn’t have put the whole scene going interview with Gordon flemming about the dioe film on the Aztecs se.

The picture improvement isn’t the only thing, a better cover, improved sound and new research on the production, and most importantly a better cover.

Two Doctors is a story that has never gotten a good cover, the VHS, novel and old DVD suffered a very unsubstantial cover. An awesome story deserves an awesome cover !:!:

Amazon has it up for preorder for 44.99 and has now be renamed as regeneration box set. If it is a box set of all the regenerations it would surely be called regenerations not regeneration. Regeneration implies to me is 1 not mutiple regenerations

Maybe it’s one story from each Doctor (The regeneration story) as, as far as I’m aware only two of them have had Special Edition (Androzani/Movie) or it could have the lost episodes plus The Curse of Fatal Death, Dimensions in Time and possibly some other specials like webcasts etc

because everyone gave up their time for charity and a commercial release would not benefit it

    • Esterath

      March 23rd, 2013 - 12:51pm

They can’t release it because of legal rights, I think.

    • gordon

      March 23rd, 2013 - 1:12pm

They can’t release it as everybody involved agreed to do it for free in exchange for the agreement that it would not be released commercially in any form for profit( and that includes even releasing it for charitable purposes)

    • Some bloke

      March 24th, 2013 - 10:54pm

(1/2) I dont understand why it cant be released for charitable purposes. It seems silly to think that back in 1993 everyone involved said ‘We’ll do it for free cus its for charity but we wont release it to the public in any format, so then it cant help make any more money for charity.’ If it were to be released for charitable purposes then that should have been fine, right?

    • Some bloke

      March 24th, 2013 - 10:54pm

(2/2) I mean these days, when artists make songs to support a charity, that is sold to the public and then all of that money is donated to the charity, so I don’t see why the bbc didn’t release to raise money. Sounds stupid 🙁

    • gordon

      March 24th, 2013 - 11:50pm

It was different times in 1993 and things worked differently then. BBC had pretty much no love for the show. It was contractually agreed that everybody involved would work for free in exchange for the BBC not to be makng money out of it in any shape or form beyond its tv broadcast. There is no way it can be released because of the legaly binding contract signed in 1993. .

    • drjakeyoung

That is correct. I bought The Key to Time in the US in 2003. It is not the first time other countries have had Doctor Who stories before us. The Deadly Assassin on VHS was another example.

gordon, i am trying to find more info about this set at the moment, but there is nothing! just the name and price! if they are going to tease us with this, they could at least do the opposite of what the BBC usually do and tell us things sooner! It is a DVD not a tv show!

To gordon, if it is the series 7 box set my theory is, and I hope I’m wrong on this big time, like the dalek spoiler on the series 7 part 2 set, maybe it has a regeneration cover, if something happens in the finale. Please let me be wrong.

Must be, since Matt Smith is in both the 50th anniversary special and the Christmas Special.

Besides, it would be a bit horrible if it was a multi-Doctor special and they had to invite him back just after he’d left.

The Tenth Planet and The Curse of Fatal Death certainly have all the unreleased regenerations. But that would be £20 or £30 tops. £41 suggests 3 new stories or equivalent or 4-5 old stories. I think Caves coming out again would be too soon.

I can only think it is Tenth Planet and something else, which could even be non-DVD items. Remember Bessie with The Three Doctors. Perhaps this is The Tenth Planet with a Hartnell and Troughton figure CO figure. That would fit the £41 price tag. Unlikely, but not impossible.

I would very much like for that, i was thinking of buying the 1st to 5th Doctor figures for display where there classic dvd’s are on my shelf, i can fit 23 dvd’s per shelf and i have 4 shelves with space at the back for the boxsets and more dvd’s (which i will have to do for the 5th Doctor) l’m only thinking of buying the 1st to the 5th though, a The Caves of Androzani is the last great Classic Story for me, although i do have the TV Movie and that’s alright.

i think what he means is by the dvd to be with another cover like the Daemons and others like The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, i think with what we know so far and the picture given that this will be a boxset with all the regeneration sequences, documentaries on each doctor’s era and perhaps a booklet or two with pictures, i think this will be alot like the 10th Doctor Era Boxset in a way except much smaller and obviously with less content

If this does also include Tenth Planet – I’d rather its a stand alone DVD thank-you very much – and I presume then that Mind of Evil will now be delayed? Rant over.

One possibility I’ve thought of it could be a set of stories showing how the show has regenerated andchanged over the almost 50 year history . Add some exclusive interviews from Moffat and smith describing about how each era changed.
