The ultimate collectors’ edition of the classic 1960s strip.

First published in TV Century 21 from 1965 to 1967, The Daleks was devised by Terry Nation and largely written by Doctor Who’s first story editor David Whitaker.

For this collectors’ edition, all 104 instalments have been digitally restored – the vast majority from the original artwork.

The bookazine also includes new features about the writers, illustrators and publishers who created The Daleks, including a detailed interview with artist Ron Turner.

Editor Marcus Hearn says: “This is the fulfilment of a long-held ambition. I loved this strip as a child and now – having seen the stunning restoration by DWM art editor Peri Godbold and her team – I admire it even more. You can’t really say The Daleks has been restored to its former glory, because I think it now looks better than it’s ever looked before.”

The Daleks is on sale at WH Smith, selected supermarkets from Wednesday 11 November priced £9.99 (UK). It’s also available as a digital edition, priced £8.99, from pocketmags.com.

For anyone in Scotland, Tesco in Airdrie has a couple of copies left, managed to get one there about half an hour ago.

I placed it in my virtual basket on pocketmags (digital copy only) and then got an email with a 5% discount: this brings the price down to £8.54p. I am a bit conflicted though as it’s not the same as a lovely glossy “bookazine” (I even love the smell).

As an American I’m quite mad about this release. First, they sell it through Panini who doesn’t even ship to the states. Second, the only place I can get it right now is through the digital edition on pocket mags. Third, the Forbidden Planet listing is sold out and will probably do the same again. Fourth, Ebay scalpers are selling it for ridiculous prices, so I’d have to pay astronomical figures just for the item itself. (This doesn’t include the $30 regular shipping) I understand if there is a delay, but alienating a large majority of your fanbase probably isn’t a good idea. This is something I definitely want, but see no chance of getting.

Similar situation here. I’m in Spain, so even if Panini does offer more online it’s no good to me as they only ship to the UK. The prices people are paying on Ebay are ridiculous – some are going for £65! So either Forbidden Planet comes good, or sadly we’ll be going without.

Bizarre, isn’t it? Apparently we will be able to order it via Diamond but it will only be available in “limited quantities” however many that will be. In other words we can order it and wait to see if we actually receive a copy or not! It’s $20 so you would think they would see how many pre-orders they receive and plan accordingly regarding another printing.

Tesco’s at the Wheatsheaf, Sunderland was a washout but Sainsbury’s at Southwick had one copy in stock which I snapped up. Haven’t tried anywhere else so other local Sainsbury’s/ Tesco’s might reap dividends! Good luck guys!

I called Forbidden Plant store in Liverpool yesterday to see if they had any copies of The Daleks Ultimate Collection as I’d had no luck finding it elsewhere. Good news was they did. Booked a time slot and picked up today. If your close and still looking they have 3 copies still available.

The bookazine numbering goes back to the first gold bordered one in 2013. Of course, some have their own numbering such as the silver bordered The Essential Doctor Who. When I can get to my notes I’ll check.

There were 3 Doctor Who: 50 Years bookazines, 15 The Essential Doctor Who bookazines and one The Story Of Doctor Who bookazine, total 19. The three Complete Twelfth Doctor issues were released in the loopy bookazine distribution model and now The Daleks has been issued, totalling 23.

Managed to pick up the one and only copy at Tesco Extra in Bradford on Friday, none in the other Tesco Extra in Great Horton, or the WHSmiths in the city centre, a lovely, well presented collection, and glad I managed to get one. Hopefully there’ll be many more copies finding their way out there, so everyone else can enjoy it without having to pay the ridiculous prices that they’re going for on eBay?

With this and searching for B&M figures it’s becoming a stressful business being a Doctor Who fan!

    • Luck4UNow

      November 16th, 2020 - 8:39pm

      I agree with Philip Shaw.

Between the B&M distribution omnishambles, Panini selling out within minutes (after I spent nearly a week refreshing their site) and The Collection selling out before release, it is almost like they don’t want us to have access to merch. It’s stressful- more of The Chase than The Quest.

I am very glad they are selling out, though. With the niche market proving it is very much alive and viable, I hope it encourages Panini, Character, B&M and others to do more and think bigger.

I tried large Sainsbury’s x1, Tesco Extra x2, WHSmith x3. Nothing. I have never missed a magazine since 1985. I am really frustrated not only at not having a copy but having to try six shops in a lockdown in a higher infection area.

Is there any way l/we can escalate this publishing deficit. Some WHSmiths had 4 different bookazines. Logically a book and even a magazine needs to be available for more than one day. Or perhaps more copies are on the way for this profit-assured venture of Panini’s.

    Thanks in advance..

Managed to get a copy and comparing it to my original Dalek Chronicles the restoration/clean team did a truly stunning job. If you can get an original or a tv21 full page comic then great but in terms of the best way to experience and read this series, this bookazine is defiantly it with a good price too (seen 2 on ebay last too).
I was quite amazed to see how much more life and colour was brought out and how less dark and more clear scenes were in some cases such as pages 41-46 (DC pages 34-40), really does make you appreciate those original pieces of art. Defiantly worth pick up a copy.

oh joy of Joys. My copy of, The Daleks, has arrived. in a CARDBOARD mailer, thus protecting, the perfect binding, and bookazine from Cracks, bends curls etc.

Our posties, have a habit of Knock, and leave on Doormat, which is fin,as we are here, but on occasion, have been in the Back Garden, and not found stuff, untill later in the evening. Not the best weather for card.

Ordered from the panini website on the 9th. Free postage option. I would love DWM to come in this style of mailer.,and would pay postage.

Book (azine if one must) is lovely, and is really a Graphic Novella . wonderfull. see you in 5 years when we get the Complete Hardback lts edition.

Does anyone know why they’re calling it Bookazine No 23 on FP and eBay? I am aware of only 15 numbered, plus ‘The Story of Doctor Who’ plus the three golden-edge ones for the fiftieth anniversary year – I make that 19 so far, surely this is the 20th in total, though if its numbered should be 16.

Could be, Anonymous, but they were no’s 34-36 in the ‘normal Special’ range (I get that ‘normal special’ is, of course, a contradiction in terms, there! 😉

However, in theory, the 3 x Capaldi ‘Companion’ editions in 2019/20 (covering his first Season) were part of the Bookazine line rather than the Specials, I believe. I’m still not sure that gets things to a neat 23, mind…

The first lot of series up to Matt’s were all specials. They then went over to bookazines from Peters series. All available at WHS. This one (Daleks) is advertised as at WHS also for £9.99 in the back of the DWM issue 558
