The ultimate collectors’ edition of the classic 1960s strip.

First published in TV Century 21 from 1965 to 1967, The Daleks was devised by Terry Nation and largely written by Doctor Who’s first story editor David Whitaker.

For this collectors’ edition, all 104 instalments have been digitally restored – the vast majority from the original artwork.

The bookazine also includes new features about the writers, illustrators and publishers who created The Daleks, including a detailed interview with artist Ron Turner.

Editor Marcus Hearn says: “This is the fulfilment of a long-held ambition. I loved this strip as a child and now – having seen the stunning restoration by DWM art editor Peri Godbold and her team – I admire it even more. You can’t really say The Daleks has been restored to its former glory, because I think it now looks better than it’s ever looked before.”

The Daleks is on sale at WH Smith, selected supermarkets from Wednesday 11 November priced £9.99 (UK). It’s also available as a digital edition, priced £8.99, from pocketmags.com.

I had wondered if Diamond might carry it sometime for shipping in 2021.

Diamond just solicited in the most recent Previews something called Daleks, but that appeared to be some kind of Panini special about the upcoming Revolution Of The Daleks.

Ye FP do appear to be having a huge back log of orders. Might not have been a wise move for them to re-open up orders for a third time if they have still not filled the first two patches yet ?

Ye I know it’s a blancing act for them to keep trading and depends where they do the distribution from and how many people are working on that to how long before they clear it all.

Just hope they remember……. Christmas is coming and they will have lots more orders for other products to get out.

Maybe they need more staff ?

    • booboo

      November 26th, 2020 - 12:00pm

With many companies its not the staff its the social distancing and cleaning regime that can considerably slow things down, putting more staff in the same space is just not an option.

FP have been incredibly slow at dispatching things due to Covid, took them 2 weeks to dispatch a Pop I bought a couple months ago; can only assume it’s getting worse as we approach Christmas.

Some have said that they couldn’t get the 10% code BF10 to work, but it worked for me when I ordered from Panini. Initially I was told there was a server error – probably due to too many of us trying to buy at once, I suppose – but then it went through and my confirmation emails from Panini and PayPal confirm that I’ve paid £8.99.

Panini – You’ve *really* dropped the ball on this release, and severely underestimated the demand for this classic reprint. Unfortunately by doing so you’ve ensured that more scalpers than fans have managed to grab hold of copies. You should offer another print run at least so everyone gets a chance to order one and the scalpers are left unable to shift their copies with inflated prices…

Tried to buy this and it went through to Paypal but didn’t seem to acknowledge that the order went through. Can find no email from Paypal and nothing in my Paypal account showing a transaction was made. Trying to buy it again, it allows me to place it in my basket but won’t allow the discount count and won’t follow through to either Paypal or any other payment option. I’m increasingly resigned to paying over the odds on eBay.

Absolutely disgusted with reply I have received from DWM subscriptions re: my enquiry as to whether this special is included in my subscription or not. Can not believe they are encouraging ebay scalpers! Their reply was:-

“The Dalek Special is a bookazine and therefore is not part of the subscription package.
It has been incredibly popular and isn’t available on the online store at the moment. Can we please therefore suggest that you look in shops such as WHSmith for a copy or try websites such as eBay”

Valeyard, apologies if you already know this but it bears repeating for those sellers who don’t.

Royal Mail Tracked and Signed is a bit of a misnomer. The BUYER in Oz can NOT track the parcel after it has left the UK! Australia Post can but their customers can not. If something has gone wrong (wrong address, Covid delays etc) the buyer has no idea what has happened and has to more or less guess when to contact AP for them to find it. We have no idea where a parcel is until it turns up at the doorstep.

Royal Mail Tracked however CAN be tracked by the buyer – on Royal Mail’s site until it leaves the country then Australia Post website (keeping the same RM tracking number).

If I had a dollar for every UK seller who said a parcel would be sent Tracked when they actually meant Tracked and Signed I could make some money…..and grit my teeth in frustration at the same time.

John, I’ve read on eBay US that the GSP is supposed to be good for heavy and high end expensive items (presumably because loss or damage is not the seller’s responsibility) but frankly should never be used for anything that doesn’t fit that criteria. eBay itself had recommended it not be used to items under $50 or maybe even up to $100. If the item is inexpensive and/or light weight the postal service is the way to go.
For info, for a long time Fedex (BTW using only their ECONOMY service!) facilitated transporting parcels from the US (not sure about the UK) to Oz…..where they were promptly handed over to Australia Post to deliver! For the stuff I bought sellers might as well have used the postal service.
The last two times I had no choice but to use the GSP (including from the UK) more recently, Fedex were no longer in the picture and parcels were handled by APG – Australia Post Global – and the service had improved markedly. So why still use Pitney Bowes and the GSP to send parcels when Royal Mail to Australia Post can do it so much better?

What’s the issue with GSP, if you don’t mind me asking? Is it because it’s expensive? I’m based in the UK and usually offer free postage for domestic and GSP for overseas, mainly out of laziness because I would otherwise have to work out the postal charges for each postage zone…

    • Black Guardian

      November 19th, 2020 - 9:36pm

Valeyard, Yes it’s ridiculously expensive. It makes things prohibitively expensive for those of us outside the UK.

    • Valeyard

      November 19th, 2020 - 10:34pm

Thanks Black Guardian, I didn’t appreciate it was so bad. It might be worth the extra effort after all.

    • Thalia

      November 20th, 2020 - 1:45am

Appallingly expensive. Besides that Pitney Bowes includes a fee for administering the 10% Oz Goods and Services Tax (something that is not permitted by the tax office here for companies in Oz but cannot be stopped if the company is overseas).
Also some sellers have (presumably) worked out how to combine items under one GSP cost….but others haven’t so you could be charged double or triple etc depending on how many items you want to buy from them.
Also….I’ve been told if sellers don’t include all details about the item like size and weight etc the GSP charge is VERY high presumably based on some PB airy fairy assumption of what if might be.
As an example I found a copy of the Daleks book on eBay for $24.95 AU but when it included the GSP and GST (with PB admin charges) the total cost went up to over $70 AU. That’s ridiculous! Royal Mail is not going to charge a fortune even with tracking!

    • Valeyard

      November 20th, 2020 - 2:39pm

Jeez… I didn’t appreciate all this. Thanks Thalia, I’ll definitely be more careful with overseas postage settings from now on.

Interesting comments re GPS. I lways use it and have never had any complaints, though I have noticed that sometimes it combines shipping on multiple orders and others not! I find it cheaper on expensive items than post office would be.
