Cuusoo Doctor Who Lego Sets – More Designs Roll In

Doctor Who Lego Sets – The Designs Roll In

An update on Lego’s Cuusoo design site suggests that Doctor Who Lego sets are now possible.

You can send in designs for Lego sets and if it receives 10,000 votes or more there is possibility it will be considered for release under the Lego brand.

Doctor Who has always been rejected in the past due to licensing issues – until now

We do not know why this has happened and what this means for Character building. Character currently hold the master toy licence for Doctor Who products.

Click Doctor Who lego Designs to see the entries so far.

License Conflicts and Resolutions

Sometimes we have to turn down project submissions that refer to specific brands or licensed properties. We do this to avoid getting your hopes up for something we know we aren’t able to make. In these cases, we already know the LEGO Group can’t secure licensing rights to produce construction toys based on a particular brand or property, due to a conflicting interest with a third party.

If such a conflict goes away, we’ll then be able to accept projects based on a particular brand or license.
The Fine Print:

If your project was previously turned down, archived, or deleted due to a licensing conflict that is now resolved, you may re-submit it as a new project. Supporters from past projects cannot be applied to a future project.
Resolved Past Licensing Conflicts

We now welcome projects based on the following licenses that used to have conflicts:

I concur that’s like saying shreddies are the same as cornflakes! Lego is better quality, more detailed and has lasted longer than doctor who has been on TV. Plus CB sets use poor quality plastic that isn’t moulded correctly and therefore barely holds together. Lego use Danish ABS plastic which makes a Lego brick not only fit but also much more durable and the printing on Lego figures never wears off due to the machines they use for the designs. Lego sets of doctor who would both be show accurate to the smallest detail and very durable.

  • MadManWithABox

    February 26th, 2014 - 7:17pm

I wouldn’t get too exited, Cuusso has 100s if not 1000s of different sets and only one gets picked every few months and that’s if it gets the right amount of followers and Lego and The BBC approve of it.

Yes but one set got 10,000 supports once but it couldn’t be put through due to the licensing. So if the guy resubmits it then hopefully it will get 10k again.

This is awesome news, but if it is just a one off then I think it will be a set of the latest TARDIS control room with minifigures of the 12th Doctor and Clara and possibly Samuel Anderson’s new character as by the time a set like this is released the likelihood is that series 8 will have been and gone, making those the most recent characters.

I REALLY HOPE THAT CHARACTER BUILDING DON’T GO!

It’s bad enough having to replace 5″ by 3.75″, without replacing CB with LEGO. CB microfigures are a lot better than LEGO and they were going so well!

All that is certain right now is that CB’s licence will expire, if it has not already been bought out

After that everything is unknown. Lego might or might not release Doctor Who sets. CB might or might not release the sets we saw at the toy fair. Anything could happen right now

I will miss the CB figures though 🙁

I think it would be a good idea doing the characters and all, but if Lego made TARDISes and that, they would be more expensive as they are a bigger company, so people would use the leg ofigures with the CB sets.

    • Dynamite Doctor

      February 26th, 2014 - 3:30pm

I dont think it would be a one off, as they would have to pay so much for a lisence for a dalek or a TARDIS that they wouldn’t get enough sales.

However, I agree that, if it did happen, then it would be a long time.

As far as I am concerned, Lego had their chance ages ago. But as Dr Who’s popularity has increased since last year they obviously see a market for it.I like the Character Build range, good likeness too, Lego figures tend to all look alike. However this doesn’t mean CO’s Licence is coming to an end, other manufactures produce toys of Dr Who. For CO to stay in the game they need to make sure the next wave of CB figures are released on time and are available in stores, last year it was difficult to get the 50th wave to start with.

would have to be a shared licence i would think, the product is to similar.

    • Anonymous

      February 26th, 2014 - 2:11pm

Or they’ve had to go through CO to get permission to make them like UT have to for many of their own products (not the exclusive figures, that’s something different).

    • nparker

      March 11th, 2014 - 2:33pm

Minifigures are highly detailed, I believe they look great. I would be sad to see the CB figures cancelled though, so if Lego Doctor Who was approved I’d have to start collecting CB figures a lot more!

  • bigfin20

    February 26th, 2014 - 10:11am

Hmm. I would buy it but in the past (from what I’ve heard) the sets have been rejected because the BBC wouldn’t give LEGO the license or a shared licence. I also think that LEGO would over price the sets (about £150 for thr TARDIS console room) based on how much LEGO Star Wars sets are.

It was rejected by none other than LEGO themselves because they thought there was absolutely no interest in the North American market. Seemingly now things have changed.

  • Radburn

I think I would be a bit more concerned about the Lego price suddenly ‘sky-rocketing’ or spend £50 on a set to get an ‘Exclusive’ only available in this pack figure type of marketing. Character does it’s own silly thing with all these ‘Super Rare’ CB figures already…

    • James A

      February 26th, 2014 - 8:22am

Likewise, the CB mini-figures hold more detail to the characters than what Lego could produce with their mini-figures, but it would be cool to see constructable Doctor Who toys open to a wider audience.

    • BRick

      February 26th, 2014 - 8:23am

Agreed. The Character Building figures have worked really well in depicting the range of Doctor Who characters. In my view, Lego Star Wars has not always executed alien likenesses as well as CB has for DW.

Roll on Series 4 display brix.

    • Anonymous

      February 26th, 2014 - 8:24am

I agree – there is a lot of loyalty to the lego brand due it spanning generations – their sets are as good as any but I hate lego mini figures.

    • StetsonDoctor

      February 26th, 2014 - 8:25am

      Lego Doctor Who? Not thanks.

We already have CB, and although some sets might be a tad bit ‘cheap’ quality-wise, the figures are great.

I just don’t see Lego doing like for instance a silurian head or a cyberman head or dare I say it, even a Dalek…

    • StetsonDoctor

      February 26th, 2014 - 8:26am

Also, would they be ‘allowed’ to have two different Doctor Who construction ranges at once???

    • booboo

      February 26th, 2014 - 9:01am

this is where it would be good to get some clarity on what’s happening with the licence, it will only lead to wild speculation otherwise

    • Hellbelly

      February 26th, 2014 - 10:33am

Well this is only in reference to Cuusoo. No mention of anything else. There’s a lot of conclusion jumping going on here.

    • booboo

      February 26th, 2014 - 10:51am

which is why there needs to be some clarification – you need a licence which is no longer an issue apparently but has been in the past – people are bound to jump to conclusions if they are not give the facts.

      February 27th, 2014 - 10:12pm

AS for your assumption Lego figures are simple that I’m afraid hasn’t been true since 2011. Nowadays Lego minifigures have moulded hair pieces, double sided faces, superbly detailed torso and leg printing. As for Lego not moulding new pieces there are many notable example when they have done precisely that take a look:

I do agree to a certain extent with BRick, I think Lego are OK at making aliens, but not great, and the CB aliens do look better. That said, the human figures would undoubtably for me look better in Lego.
