Doctor Who Jungles of Mechanus 5.5″ Dalek Set

This item has sold out but you could keep checking www.character-online.com

Alternatively you can search for this item at www.ebay.co.uk or check www.amazon.co.uk

An ebay seller also has items for customs such as Claws and Cutting Arms

USA /Australian/ Outside of the EU buyers will have the VAT deducted. The total USA delivered cost seems to be around $45 or even less depending on location.

This unique set includes 2 x highly detailed 5.5 inch scale Daleks with points of articulation, and comes beautifully presented in Heritage style Doctor Who branded packaging with specially created insert. A must have for all Doctor Who fans and collectors.

Way back in 1965, a six-part First Doctor story entitled ‘The Chase’ became famous in the eyes of Doctor Who fans for being special in many ways. It featured some unique ‘guest’ Daleks seen in Episode Three and Five. The exclusive Jungles of Mechanus Dalek Figure Set, has been created to offer something unique to delight fans and collectors and to pay homage to the unique Daleks seen onscreen. ‘The Chase’ storyline follows The First Doctor and his companions Ian, Barbara and Vicky who are forced to flee through time in the TARDIS after they learn that a group of Daleks, with their own Time Ship are following them with orders to exterminate!

An epic chase through space and time ensues, starting on the Planet Aridius and then continuing through locations including the Empire State Building, the ‘Marie Celeste’ ship, and even an old haunted house populated by classic horror characters. Heading to a final confrontation, the TARDIS lands on the Planet Mechanus, where the Daleks arrive shortly afterwards. Pursued by multiple Dalek patrols through the dense and aggressive Mechanus jungle, the travellers eventually come upon a strange metallic city suspended high in the sky which belongs to an equally evil robot species known as the Mechanoids.

Al Dewar, Character Options’ Head of Product Development, went on to explain why for him it holds a special place in his heart.

“Firstly it’s the final adventure for the last of the original TARDIS companions, Ian and Barbara but it also features the first and last appearance of a race of robotic creatures the Mechanoids”

“Dalek aficionados will also know that it marks the appearance of some rather special ‘guest’ Dalek props that were seen in Episodes 3 and 5. At the time of filming the BBC were short of Dalek props having only three left. New Daleks were commissioned, but to fill the gap, they hired three Dalek props from the ‘Doctor Who and The Daleks’ movie.

“These ‘guest’ Daleks were chosen because they had sucker arms which matched the Daleks from the BBC series and two are seen in altered form, with their deep skirt bases and light covers removed. The second and more exciting appearances however, are two unaltered props glimpsed several times as part of the Dalek patrols pursuing the TARDIS crew through the Jungle.

“As fans will know, we’ve introduced the Dalek Twin pack sets starting with ‘The Daleks’ and ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’ this year which begin to chart the chronological TV appearances of the Doctors greatest and oldest enemies. So, it was a fitting next step therefore to announce a new and unique Dalek Two figure Set which neatly dovetails into that series.

“It is these special ‘guest’ Daleks that we present here in our new Online Exclusive. With their distinctively different light covers and skirt bases along with unique metallic colours, this set brings the fans and collectors a one-off unique TV Dalek Action Figure never produced before.”

It’s a good idea to have extra spin off Daleks as a few stories have loads of variants such as ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’.

Hasbro started crowd funding about 2 years ago for the StarWars Jabba the Hutt sail barge.
Character Options should try it on a regular basis, would be a good idea. There’s no risk involved for Character, if an appeal doesn’t get enough subscriptions then it doesn’t get made. Guaranteed sales really. I think thats why Hasbro’s gone down this route.
    As Bobby Davros mentioned.
Its also the route Big Chiefs gone since being founded.

Character should look into Hasbro style crowdfunding an Evil Emperor prototype (if they havent got a mould already) which they could sell as an online exclusive. If it doesn’t get funded they havent lost anything.

If they get that far, I can see them doing a remembrance set themselves, bit like gap fillers that B&M won’t cover like the new set.

Though if other retailers don’t want them or invest in them, then doesn’t make a difference about society. Plus the only reason B&M are investing is that they are exclusive to them in the UK, you’d have to look for someone with the same amount of cash, commitment and investment as B&M for that type of all online approach.

B&M would probably drop out if Character started looking for other businesses anyway. The odd charater online exclusive is probably is as good as you will get and really isn’t too bad either.

  • booboo

    August 27th, 2020 - 9:30am

Not going to happen, B&M are guaranteed no risk sales as they are all pre sold, investing in huge quantities of stuff in the “hope” it sells from only one source is not a good idea. Also for the most part B&M are not on the high street and are actually doing fine.

Transferring to much of your business in house also alienates your long standing and need customer base.

some, ears, but also probably less quantity made as opposed to other sets = higher end price and “risk” as in possible lower sales / drawn out sales to factor in.

The B&M sets for example, and much of the 13th Doctor wave are all pre-sold and therefore no risk to Characters investment in them.

I went to pay for the two sets I planned to order, but instead of giving me the total in the PayPal window, it said the list price/VAT (20+4 and some change), and converted it to dollars. But, even though I registered an account and put in an address, it didn’t say the delivery charge. I know the shipping from the estimator but it doesn’t say it’s charging me for it, nor does it list the added fees from PayPal. My fear is that I will be charged some hidden amount after I’ve already paid it. Does anyone know how to find the total cost before paying?

Booboo, this may be a silly question but do you think there will still be stock this time tomorrow when it’s my pay day? I’d much rather wait until then to pre-order and with half the stock gone in 12 hours i’m not sure if there’ll be enough to last till then.

The CO line has gotten so large and so wonderful (full of must-haves) that it has gone past being a plausible “cute quirk” or “desk decoration” or “childhood nostalgia.”

It’s turning into a lifestyle. I have five packages of CO figures coming in the next two weeks! What do I say to the wife? What will my in laws think if they walk into my home office stacked with daleks? What will the neighbours think???

We should come up with tips and pointers that have worked for others…..

Secondly, booboo is also AWESOME for covering this!
Thirdly, after pre-ordering 1 set to open, I did what I’ve never done before: pre-ordered a 2nd so that I can have a sealed version as well LOL (I’m sure other collectors do it, but this is a first for me). Anyone collecting the History Of The Dalek sets owes it to themselves to get this set! Also, the fact that CO have proven they can make versions of the Movie Daleks, means we can surely look forward to seeing “Doctor Who And The Daleks” and “Dalek’s Invasion Earth 2150 AD” sets in the future :D.

Character would have to ask permission from the copyright holders (Studio Canal I think). The BBC doesn’t hold the rights for the Cushing movies.

    • prototype dalek

      August 26th, 2020 - 8:10pm

They could only do this dalek due to the fact it appeared in an episode (The Chase) and also did not have the claw arm either which distinguishes it from the Movie Daleks and the Classic era. Probably wouldn’t have been able to do it if the claw arm was included and the other colours are still owned by Studio Canal so they will never be done, unless they get a separate license

    • Gareth Pugh

      August 27th, 2020 - 9:08am

As Mac says, they can’t do the movie Daleks unless they go to Canal+ and get a separate product licence. Eaglemoss did a superb 1:21 scale figurine of exactly this variant about 4 years ago, explaining in the accompanying magazine about how this version with the sucker appeared in the background of a couple of the jungle. To be clear and fair neither CO nor Eaglemoss have ever asserted the following suggestion, but by doing this seen-on-TV variant it lets them get as close as they can to doing a Movie Dalek without breaking any copyrights that their licence from the BBC won’t cover.

    For anyone in USA/Canada:
Order two of these sets, standard is shipping is 11 quid for one set and it doesn’t change for two sets, plus don’t be fooled, while they’re listed on the main page as 24.99 quid, when you get to check out it gets discounted to and you get charged 20.82 quid I suspect because of VAT and exchange rate accounting for. You can even check out with paypal. CO runs such an excellent website especially for international buyers, makes me wish they’d post some of the B&M sets there for an international audience. Hope this comments helps those in NA to grab one before they’re gone for good!

      August 27th, 2020 - 1:19am

I noticed when I went to check out the cost for shipping wasn’t included, it only said for the two sets I wanted to order and listed the price/VAT just like you said(20+4 and some change). I’m worried that I may be charged with some other amount that isn’t being shown. I already registered an account and listed my address, so there shouldn’t be a problem there, and I am aware that there should be some fee through PayPal(that they don’t show until you’ve paid) for making a currency exchange purchase. Do you or anyone know what I can do to know the total cost before committing to the purchase?

    • Anonymous

      August 27th, 2020 - 8:58am

Hi Sammy J! Booboo will probably give a better answer than me but from your comment, I take it, like me (Anonymous) you’re not buying from inside the UK right? But instead internationally, probably from North America? When you check out CO let’s you download a pdf of your purchase as a receipt for your records, so don’t worry, you won’t get hit with any “hidden fees” and if you do it’s probably paypal as you said. I’ve ordered through CO’s website a few times before and I can tell you for international buyers, they are AMAZING. If you’re really that worried, send them an email with your order number or buy a phone card and call them, the customer service team is incredible and they really go the extra mile for us international folks, it’s actually really nice (B&M sets aside, but CO doesn’t control that, that’s down to B&M as you’ve probably seen by now). Trust me, you’ll be fine, CO is very transparent and up-front about what they’re charging you and if you don’t like it they are always happy to help improve your experience. I have nothing but the absolute highest praise for CO’s website and team. If I had more money I genuinely would’ve bought more of these sets, just to support CO more than anything else, the fact that they give it to us with no VAT which they could easily tack on at checkout by justifying it as some sort of “additional charge” or whatever and the fact that shipping is so cheap just boggles the mind and is a clear testament to how much they care.
      Cheers!

It would be so wonderful if CO just set things up so that international buyers could just purchase all of their Doctor Who releases directly through them. I mean, I get the marketing angle, but the total price on this set was much so easier to absorb than the not so merry dance of getting ahold of the others. Good for anyone for whom the GOGS1 debacle worked out fine. But for me, it’s just been another disappointment in a year of big disappointments. This transaction was a thoroughly pleasant one. Good on CO!
