The Series 7 finale, starring Matt Smith. The Doctor has a secret he will take to his grave. And it is discovered…

• The Night of the Doctor

Special mini-episode ‘The Night of the Doctor’ to reveal the Doctor’s dark chapter.
Starring Paul McGann, this BBC iPlayer exclusive will for the first time ever reveal what became of the 8th Doctor. On the eve of his most terrible battle, the Time Lord is faced with a choice that will change the course of his life. The darkest of days are about to begin.

The Doctor has always been a man of secrets – and now they can be told…

• The Day of the Doctor

The Day of the Doctor stars Matt Smith, David Tennant, Jenna Coleman, with Billie Piper and John Hurt. The Doctors embark on their greatest adventure in this 50th Anniversary Special: in 2013, something terrible is awakening in London’s National Gallery; in 1562, a murderous plot is afoot in Elizabethan England; and somewhere in space an ancient battle reaches its devastating conclusion. All of reality is at stake as the Doctor’s own dangerous past comes back to haunt him.

• The Time of the Doctor

The Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, takes the controls of the TARDIS for the last time in The Time of the Doctor. Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them – the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.

• An Adventure in Space and Time

On November 23rd 1963, a television legend began when the very first episode of Doctor Who was broadcast in the UK on BBC One. Fifty years later, An Adventure in Space and Time brings to life the story of the show’s creation and the role in its success of the first producer, director and, of course, the very first Doctor – William Hartnell.

    For non UK buyers:
Be careful with the taxes… Uk is not in EU anymore and taxes on products imported are back. Some services on Ebay already started.

Was disappointed the didn’t put these to UHD discs. I suppose TUAT didn’t sell well. But these episodes have beautiful visuals. I’m still happy as I missed out on the original all those years ago. I get to watch An Adventure in Space and Time in HD.

I don’t buy the steelbooks as I am happy with my complete standard collection. But they are great artwork. This one is particularly brilliant and it includes the Five(ish) Doctors which I’ve wanted for ages. The 50th was a special time and deserves to stand out on the shelf. Can’t resist, pre-ordered my copy!

I’m glad this is.coming out as.it is, even though I have the original release. The cardboard cover to the original is so fragile and flimsy I wince every time I open it in case it gets damaged.

I started putting any DVDs or Blu-ray’s that I have with cardboard sleeves in plastic slips to protect them, it works quite well. Learnt the hard way through damaging a few of my early specials.

Will there be any chance if this set will be region free? I’ve been hoping to get The Five-ish Doctor Reboot to add to my collection and that I won’t spend extra on a region 2 player in Canada.

Current releases and especially steelbook releases have been region-free. Except for the Specials since I believe only Disc 4 in that set was Region Free.

If it’s 1080/50i like the original 2014 release your player and TV must be compatible.

So pleased that they got Lee Binding back for this one. Don’t get me wrong, big fan of Cowdrey’s work (Series 7 in particular is stunning), but Binding’s art has always been a staple of DW merch for me. Anyone else notice the parallels on the back cover with that of the Series 1 steelbook? Just stunning!

I’ve loved Series 1-2 and 5-7 in particular! Only thing that slightly bugs me with this one now I’m looking at it in more detail is that the Daleks are on the front which is the first time villains have been on the front rather than the back so it mucks up the consistency slightly (apart from series 7 but we all understand the reasons for that).

I’m sure I’ll get over it though! It’s still a great looking cover!

Now that we’re all caught up with revival steelbooks, how likely is it that Series 8 will get a re-release?
The S12 (and other?) classic box set got a re-release so I am hopeful.

      November 23rd, 2020 - 7:04pm

AFAIK S8 didn’t get a steelbook. I’m kinda hoping that instead of just re-releasing S9 & 10, they redo them in the newer style to match the current ones.

    • daz

      November 23rd, 2020 - 8:55pm

They’ll be doing 8 to 10 for definite as this is a new range of steelbooks. And they won’t re-release the original 9 and 10 as they were seperate limited editions too.

I expect 11 onwards too at some point further down the line.

    • Anonymous

      November 23rd, 2020 - 10:58pm

      oh yeah, meant s9.
What do you mean by them being separate ltd editions?

    • daz

      November 24th, 2020 - 10:15am

The original Series 9 and 10 Steelbooks were available on the original release so are one off limited editions that are seperate from this current range of steelbooks.

When they re-release them on steelbook (series 8, 9 and 10) it will be part of the current Limited Edition range of steelbooks which started with Series 1.

Hoping ‘Twice Upon A Time’ is included in Series 10 as there is no need for it to be on it’s own.

Think they’ve slightly missed a trick by not including a new bonus disc like with The Specials steelbook. A extra disc just to round off Matt’s era including his SJAdventures episodes and the 2010 proms (and anything else omitted). Nice that they did it for David’s, pity about here.

Little bit disappointed by this myself actually. It’s wonderful that the set has essentially been rereleased for those who missed out originally, given its rarity, but it’s maddening that they didn’t use the opportunity to give us missing bonus content. The best example is The” Complete Tennant/Smith/Capaldi Years” boxsets in the US, all of which came with a bonus disc. We got this bonus disc with the 2009/10 specials steelbook, and I’d hoped we’d get the same for the 11th Doctor, but alas no. One can only hope they make the effort for Capaldi and include these extras with Series 8, or 9/10 should they get a rerelease.

Oh yes! They’ve done what I was hoping! Yes it’s just a re-release of the 50th anniversary collectors set. But I only got that on DVD at the time so it will be amazing to have a bluray version for a reasonable price. And I’d prefer the duplication with other sets to missing out on something! Great news! I’m personally happy that we get the Name Of The Doctor on this boxset, as it makes the saga of Name, Night, Day and Time of the Doctor complete, if you choose not to watch Name on this version fine by you, but I prefer the three episodes (4 including the Mini-Episode of Night) to be featured on this.

Name links onto Night, Night links onto Day and Day links into Time. It’s a whole mini arc from start to finish and so it makes sense to include it. I’d have thought they were stupid if they didn’t include it to be honest.

Do you mean the first pressings of Day of the Doctor? (24fps, 5.1 mix that didn’t down-convert to stereo properly.) They did a re-press of that disc from the box set, which you could get by emailing 2|e your proof of purchase, so barring accidents they should use that one for the new release – unless there was another problem with the set?

All those Daleks on the front and they only appear for like one scene. So much hype was made about it being set in the time war and yet we got a grand total of zero extermination’s

Dalek saucers form the main part of the climax to Day.

Daleks also pretty prominent in Time, so there’s that too.

And you could add Last Day, which is all about them.

So annoyed with Amazon UK. I have been importing all of the new series Steelbooks from them to Mexico. But they’ve recently/suddenly refusing to ship new stuff, marking them as out of stock. I guess I’m gonna have to buy this and the series 7 steelbook on ebay. (I know the reasons for the lack of international shipping is probably covid, but it’s still incredibly annoying. They should just charge extra like they did when I ordered the series 6 Steelbook in August.)

Another lovely steelbook. Sold my Collectors Blu-Ray 2 weeks ago in preparation. I guess it will be released around March/April.

I was hoping for Time to be on the back cover art though. And it’s a shame there’s no bonus disc so ‘Death of the Doctor’ could be squeezed in with a new Matt Smith interview too.

Looking forward to seeing what they do for Series 8…

Day of the Doctor and Time of the Doctor were shot in 1080p50. No point in a 4K release. The Twice Upon a Time is notorious for looking blurry at 4K because it’s an upscale. HDR could work, but it’s better to leave it off 4K since it wasn’t shot at 4K.

The current logo has to be on all the new merchandise. If you don’t like it, then don’t buy it. You will have to wait a long time before they change it.

    • Jackson Lake

      November 23rd, 2020 - 10:13am

Same, I didn’t see the point of making ALL merchandise with the same logo whereas its obviously gonna change again few years down the line. But I do know there are some nice steelbook spine magnets someone on Etsy has made so you can make all the spines use the same logo!

    • Anonymous

      November 23rd, 2020 - 11:04am

But there’s no reason to think the logo would change. For example, The Collection team said that even when the logo changes, the CURRENT logo would remain. The Current logo is the definitve Doctor Who logo across the brand, much like how McGann’s logo became the logo for a couple of decades. It’s not just a case of changing willy-nilly. The current logo is the logo that will stay, even when Doctors change.
