The TARDIS arrives in December 1986 at a South Pole Space Tracking station where the personnel, under the command of General Cutler, are engaged in trying to talk down a manned space capsule that has got into difficulty. The base is invaded by a force of alien Cybermen. The Cybermen’s world, Mondas, is draining energy from Earth – once its ‘twin planet’ – and the situation will soon become critical
The First Doctorβs final adventure The Tenth Planet will have its lost fourth episode animated for DVD release.
Original VHS information…
Many aeons ago, Earth’s twin planet, Mondas, drifted away the edge of space. Its inhabitants grew weak, so their scientists created spare parts for their bodies. Limbs and organs were slowly replaced by metal and plastic, and emotions were removed. The Cybermen were born.
The TARDIS lands at the South Pole Tracking Station late in 1986, just as a routine space mission starts going wrong. When the base personnel’s suspicions are raised, the Doctor informs them that the space capsule is being affected by the gravitational pull of another planet.
A tenth planet…
As Mondas returns to the solar system, the Doctor warns tHat a visit from Mondas’s inhabitants is imminent. The Cybermen want Earth’s power and resources for themselves. Only the Doctor offers the base any hope against these silver giants. But is this one battle too many for the ailing time traveller?
This story, which was the lost to feature William Hartnell as the Doctor and features the first regeneration, was broadcast on BBC1 between 8-29 October 1966.
The Original VHS version was released in a tinned set along with Attack of The Cybermen. This had the 4th episode reconstructed using stills…
The Tenth Planet was to be William Hartnell’s last regular appearance as The Doctor. To explain the change of lead actor, the production team came up with a revolutionary idea.
The Doctor declares that his old body is wearing a bit thin, and in the final scene he collapses, his appearance begins to change…
The first ‘regeneration’ takes place, and television history is made. Producer Innes Lloyd and Story Editor Gerry Davis wanted to inject
a degree of scientific accuracy into the series, and decided to draw on the knowledge of a ‘scientific advisor’. To this end, Dr Kit Pedler became an unofficial member of the Doctor Who team.
The first story to benefit from Pedler’s insight was ‘The War Machines’ and on the back of the success of this story, Davis looked to him for future story ideas. Unhappy with Pedler’s initial suggestions, Davis asked him to focus on one of his main scientific phobias – dehumanised medicine. As a result, the first story to include the Cybermen, a race who had taken cybernetics to its ultimate conclusion, was devised.
As with all Doctor Who stories of this period, ‘The Tenth Planet was recorded an episode at a time on a weekly basis. However an emergency re-write was needed for the third episode, when illness forced William Hartnell to miss both the rehearsal and the recording of the episode. Consequently, the Doctor spends all of Episode Three unconscious and covered up in bed.
The job of devising the Cybermen’s look fell to costume designer Sandra Reid, who tried to keep to the script’s description as best she could. For these early Cybermen, Reid used all-over cloth body suits, with a polythene layer on top and copious amounts of sticky tape to keep the costumes together.

March 5th, 2013 - 5:25pmIt’s made me think will Hartnell’s regeneration we in clip or animation I hope it’s in clip because an animated regeneration won’t look right
drjakeyoung
March 5th, 2013 - 5:26pmit’s been confirmed animation but that doesn’t matter because you get the original VHS recon as an extra and that will have the original regeneration.

It’s only 1 episode and could be within their budget…

February 24th, 2013 - 9:19pmso have they already animated the whole episode? I was under the impression they had just started.
Gordon
February 24th, 2013 - 9:38pmIt mentions in the article that its due to be completed next month
A. Walters
February 24th, 2013 - 10:04pmI was hoping they would use the existing footage of the regeneration instead of animating it at the end. Seems a shame to not use that clip once and for all. Or is that just a test animation? Any thoughts?
gordon
February 24th, 2013 - 10:22pmBoth an animated version and the original footage is being included so I don’t really see why its an issue when there is the option of having both versions.
MasterKasterborous
February 25th, 2013 - 7:25amAlso we’ll get to hear news in the upcoming weeks as to the fate of The Ice Warriors. I’m really, really hoping for animation; why else would they delay it four months?
josh smith
February 25th, 2013 - 7:26amreally after seing a amazing wheel in space recon i want a recon!
gordon
February 25th, 2013 - 11:46amDan hall isn’t really interested in recons. He feels animation has raised the bar. The only reason we are getting recons for galaxy 4 and tenth planet is they both already exist
Lachlan
February 28th, 2013 - 6:08amagreed animation works better the Reconstructions are really good in terms of using what still survives from the episode but when it comes down to DVD Release animation works better in my opinion.

(they are announcing something for the missing episodes (probably animation) in 2 weeks time for the DVD release.)
Anonymous
February 17th, 2013 - 3:44pmHopefully by the time these have all been animated they will have quite a few members of the main cast prepared in animated form which should save them some money and make more episodes per story feasible.
drjakeyoung
February 17th, 2013 - 4:12pmi think after this year, all they will be releasing is animations, special editions and new series releases.
Anonymous
February 17th, 2013 - 4:28pmThat’s almost certainly a given, unless The Underwater Menace Episode 2 gets delayed, or more episodes are recovered.
Anonymous
February 17th, 2013 - 4:35pmoh yea damn your right underwater menace is in these budget i was looking an an out of date source.
underwater menace is epiosde 1 and 4 missing.
Planet Dalek
February 17th, 2013 - 8:15pmWhat about the 12-parter which I can never remember the name of!
You know! With the Daleks!
Anonymous
February 17th, 2013 - 8:22pmThe Daleks’ Master Plan? Nine of the parts are missing and would need to be animated (ten if they include Mission to the Unknown) which is well out of their budget, even if split up.
Anonymous
February 22nd, 2013 - 11:26amif the BBC STOP the revisited (special editions) and give the animators the money from them they my be able to do more.
Anonymous
February 22nd, 2013 - 11:28amanother good idea is if the BBC remake all the lost stories using the cast from an adventure in time and space.
MasterKasterborous
February 24th, 2013 - 2:40pm*An Adventure in Space and Time
Personally I think that may be a fun little tribute but certainly not for a main feature. Plus you would have to cast so many more look-a-likes and it would just feel wrong not having the real actors. I would much prefer animations (or even reconstructions).
gordon
February 24th, 2013 - 5:00pm@ anonymous. Stopping revisits won’t give animated stories more money. The revisits are far cheaper to make than animated stories. Each story has its budget allocated based upon howmany copies its expected to sell. Less revisits doesn’t mean the is more animation budget. The limit is only 2 because the DVDs only sell a certain ammount of copies and at the moment 3eps
would be too expensive and the number of sales needed is far greater than the amount sales that it will achieve and it will lose money
Tim M
February 17th, 2013 - 11:01amSo ‘The Tenth Planet’ is the last possible story that was awaiting announcement for DVD release. That pretty much completes the collection of the classic series. Unless they plan to animate more missing episodes. Namely ‘The (Underrated) Underwater Menace’ parts 1 and 4 plus ‘The Moonbase’ parts 1 and 3.
Lachlan
February 17th, 2013 - 11:16amThere’s more than those 2 left that could be animated haha but even with The Underwater Menace being under-rated in your opinion l’m pretty sure fans would like to see the newly recovered episode come to light anyway π
Alex Noonan
February 27th, 2013 - 10:57pmWas it Brian Hodgson who said he has recorded a commentary or something for The Moonbase? Hopefully we’ll get animated episodes π
Lachlan
February 17th, 2013 - 9:44amI would prefer the BBC Recon from the VHS on this, so as to have the surviving footage of the regeneration and l have the Loose Cannon version and the BBC did better at it in my opinion.
gordon
February 17th, 2013 - 10:45amWe are getting the recon as well as animation
Lachlan
February 17th, 2013 - 11:15amthanks Gordon! that’s good to hear!
Planet Dalek
February 17th, 2013 - 8:17pmI also hope we get the regeneration (not animated), I mean, it would be interesting to see it animated but I’d like the original!
gordon
February 18th, 2013 - 4:14pmDan hall has said its already been animated and as we are getting both anyway I don’t think it matters
Connor
February 17th, 2013 - 4:42amSo now I’m wondering are they actually doing the animation or the ice warriors!? They have already shown pictures of the tenth planet so why not the ice warriors! They should have already shown the ice warriors animation pictures by now since they have done already a trailer and release date confirmed and special features done! I think they have done the animation for episodes 2 & 3 of the ice warriors but at the same time I don’t think they have π . What is your thoughts on the animation of the ice warriors dvd release will it have animations
gordon
February 17th, 2013 - 10:11amDan hall mentioned at galifrey one that news on how the missing episodes of ice warriors will be represented will be announced in about 2 weeks time. He didn’t give any hints but he did say that its more than the VHS recon
Connor
February 17th, 2013 - 4:36amFinally the tenth planet is getting released! This story is my 4th favourite story of all time. This story has the first appearance of the cybermen and there my favourite design and this is the last William hartnell story! I’m so excited that they are animating the missing episode, and hopefully this will have a lot of special features and hopefully the picture quality is good to! I would love it if they put the wonderfull cover art of the video release on the DVD but I think the 2 entertain can do a better one! Getting this one on release date
Liason Ice
February 17th, 2013 - 3:30amI’ve always wanted to see that episode, can’t wait π
pathdw98
February 16th, 2013 - 11:45pmwhen is it being released?
gordon
February 17th, 2013 - 12:21amIt is expected late 2013
Joethewhovian
February 19th, 2013 - 8:58amLate 2013…
Matt Smith said he’s leaving by the end of the year so we might be able to see the original doctor regenerate with the current….
booboo
February 19th, 2013 - 9:09amwhere exactly has he said he is leaving?
Joethewhovian
February 19th, 2013 - 7:29pmIn an interveiw with a newspaper, He said he might leave by the end of the year.
thedaleksdeath
February 20th, 2013 - 9:18pmOh gonna miss Matt is he really is leaving but he could be lieing π
thedaleksdeath
February 20th, 2013 - 9:20pmSorry I mean I’m gonna miss Matt If he really leeaving but he maybe lieing? π
MasterKasterborous
February 24th, 2013 - 2:44pmDon’t trust everything you read in the papers! Matt once said he will leave at some point in the future; which is an obvious statement that is true of any actor in a continuous role. However, the papers printed the heading ‘MATT SMITH QUITS’ which is hardly the same.
Lachlan
February 16th, 2013 - 9:06pmThis is excellent news! and fits well for the 50th Anniversary! π l was originally annoyed at animation but l now think its the best way to go! l think people should stop looking at what we’ve lost when it comes to missing episodes in a way and look at what we still have! l mean we still have the first regeneration! how amazing is that and even though there are more than 100 missing episodes, think about other TV Series from the 60s and how they were kept. Having said that though it would be amazing to see the count drop below 100 π
matparks08
February 16th, 2013 - 10:46pmHard to belive that there are many missing episodes of 1980s series such as The Adventure Game, Finders Keepers and, famously, many UK versions of Fraggle Rock with Fulton Mackay – I find it quite unbelievable. Tenth Planet part 4 is arguably the most famous missing episode of….well…..anything! Dr Who or otherwise!
Planet Dalek
February 17th, 2013 - 8:21pmIt should happen (quite a while off) when we get to below 100 missing epidodes! We’re only on… what?… 106? I can never remember!
Look at it this way: We lost dozens of episodes in the 1970s but those who are loyal to episodes will find the ones that are out there!
MasterKasterborous
February 24th, 2013 - 2:46pmIndeed it’s 106 missing episodes. Doctor Who is pretty well off actually and that’s really down to its loyal fans who have literally tracked down episodes from across the globe. There may be more out there or we could have found every frame that still exists. We will never know…
Anonymous
February 24th, 2013 - 3:19pmSeveral episodes are still unaccounted for so who knows what we will see in the future, but equally ones we think are gone may show up again (such as the Australian copy of The Underwater Menace Episode 2 which was believed wiped, but showed up two years ago).
MasterKasterborous
February 24th, 2013 - 8:50pmWell, all the 60s episodes were wiped, all 253 of them! The least likely to show up is The Feast Of Steven as no copy of the episode was ever made and the original was destroyed.
Mjanus
February 16th, 2013 - 6:10pmI wonder why they decided against animating the remaining episodes of Galaxt 4 and releasing it as a stand alone.
Anonymous
February 16th, 2013 - 10:16pmAnimating three episodes is beyond their budget. They can only really afford one or two in the one release.
josh smith
February 18th, 2013 - 3:56pmno its not they should do a half recon half animating or even hire bablecouler to couler 2 part 60s stories starting with
the edge of destruction and the recue and planet of giants in a boxset
celestial toymaker
February 20th, 2013 - 11:45ami doubt that would happen
MasterKasterborous
February 24th, 2013 - 2:48pmIt took him a year and a half to do one episode! 7 in one box set might be a bit extreme. I prefer them in black and white actually though colour versions could make nice special features.
Matt P
February 16th, 2013 - 4:40pmExcellent news,……but when and where will we see the discovered Underwater Menace episode????
MasterKasterborous
February 16th, 2013 - 6:03pmIt’s the only episode which the DVD release hasn’t been announced yet. I’m hoping episode 1 and 4 should be animated and it be released on it’s own but I think that’s just wishful thinking…
Connor
February 17th, 2013 - 4:47amHopefully they release it in a single dvd release on it’s won with animations for episode 1 & 4 but I don’t know it can be possible and is very likely. But for release date wise, probably not until 2014 at the end of the release line! And I’m also hoping for DVD releases of the moonbase and the crusade on DVD and to have the missing episodes animated!
Planet Dalek
February 17th, 2013 - 8:24pmMaybe they’ll do a MASSIVE project by re-animating all epidodes that are lost to us! I mean ALL of them! Not in one Boxset, of course but, you know…
josh smith
February 18th, 2013 - 4:00pmno no no half reconstructions half animated to satisfy all fans
Anonymous
February 18th, 2013 - 4:06pmHow woudl that satisfy all fans, some want animations and some want reconstructions. Barely any are wanting the two mixed together.
If anything, the best method would be to just do both on each release.
Tardisnt
February 16th, 2013 - 4:34pmi hope they show the real regeneration in this, not an animated one as they still have that!
Tim M
February 16th, 2013 - 5:57pmAgreed. The regeneration exists in full and it’s too iconic a moment to leave and animate instead. When it clearly doesn’t NEED to be animated.
MasterKasterborous
February 16th, 2013 - 6:04pmPersonally I think the whole thing should be animated and then their should be an option (not unlike those for CGI sequences on other releases) which will make the episode included any non-8mm clips from the actual episode.
andrew
February 16th, 2013 - 4:09pmAbout time this was released, i will bet getting it and looking forward to the animated ep!

February 16th, 2013 - 3:36pmThey only do it with the ones that have one or two episodes missing .
CG
February 16th, 2013 - 2:49pmI am soo happy that over the past few weeks/months they have announced that they will be releasing some of the most anticipated episodes to come to DVD (this being one of them). I don’t mind them making these special editions as long as they keep releasing the never released episodes.

February 16th, 2013 - 1:35pmHow bad? It’s the last remaining story that hasn’t had a DVD release finally getting a release. That’s a good thing
josh smith
February 16th, 2013 - 2:44pmyes but there animation the last episode so we wont see the regeneration π
drjakeyoung
February 16th, 2013 - 3:05pmthey will probably include the recon as a special feature so if you want to see the original regeneration you can just watch that instead.
drjakeyoung
February 16th, 2013 - 3:25pmplus the underwater menace is the last unreleased episode.
Connor
February 17th, 2013 - 4:53amI would love to have a moonbase DVD release and a crusade and underwater menace dvd releases as well though that will probably happen in 2014! But still it will be worth it for animations of the underwater menace and the moonbase! And of cause the crusade π
