The TARDIS arrives in December 1986 at a South Pole Space Tracking station where the personnel, under the command of General Cutler, are engaged in trying to talk down a manned space capsule that has got into difficulty. The base is invaded by a force of alien Cybermen. The Cybermen’s world, Mondas, is draining energy from Earth – once its ‘twin planet’ – and the situation will soon become critical

The First Doctor’s final adventure The Tenth Planet will have its lost fourth episode animated for DVD release.

Original VHS information…

Many aeons ago, Earth’s twin planet, Mondas, drifted away the edge of space. Its inhabitants grew weak, so their scientists created spare parts for their bodies. Limbs and organs were slowly replaced by metal and plastic, and emotions were removed. The Cybermen were born.

The TARDIS lands at the South Pole Tracking Station late in 1986, just as a routine space mission starts going wrong. When the base personnel’s suspicions are raised, the Doctor informs them that the space capsule is being affected by the gravitational pull of another planet.

A tenth planet…

As Mondas returns to the solar system, the Doctor warns tHat a visit from Mondas’s inhabitants is imminent. The Cybermen want Earth’s power and resources for themselves. Only the Doctor offers the base any hope against these silver giants. But is this one battle too many for the ailing time traveller?

This story, which was the lost to feature William Hartnell as the Doctor and features the first regeneration, was broadcast on BBC1 between 8-29 October 1966.

The Original VHS version was released in a tinned set along with Attack of The Cybermen. This had the 4th episode reconstructed using stills…

10th-planet-VHS

The Tenth Planet was to be William Hartnell’s last regular appearance as The Doctor. To explain the change of lead actor, the production team came up with a revolutionary idea.

The Doctor declares that his old body is wearing a bit thin, and in the final scene he collapses, his appearance begins to change…

The first ‘regeneration’ takes place, and television history is made. Producer Innes Lloyd and Story Editor Gerry Davis wanted to inject
a degree of scientific accuracy into the series, and decided to draw on the knowledge of a ‘scientific advisor’. To this end, Dr Kit Pedler became an unofficial member of the Doctor Who team.

The first story to benefit from Pedler’s insight was ‘The War Machines’ and on the back of the success of this story, Davis looked to him for future story ideas. Unhappy with Pedler’s initial suggestions, Davis asked him to focus on one of his main scientific phobias – dehumanised medicine. As a result, the first story to include the Cybermen, a race who had taken cybernetics to its ultimate conclusion, was devised.

As with all Doctor Who stories of this period, ‘The Tenth Planet was recorded an episode at a time on a weekly basis. However an emergency re-write was needed for the third episode, when illness forced William Hartnell to miss both the rehearsal and the recording of the episode. Consequently, the Doctor spends all of Episode Three unconscious and covered up in bed.

The job of devising the Cybermen’s look fell to costume designer Sandra Reid, who tried to keep to the script’s description as best she could. For these early Cybermen, Reid used all-over cloth body suits, with a polythene layer on top and copious amounts of sticky tape to keep the costumes together.

I was hoping they would use the existing footage of the regeneration instead of animating it at the end. Seems a shame to not use that clip once and for all. Or is that just a test animation? Any thoughts?

    • gordon

      February 24th, 2013 - 10:22pm

Both an animated version and the original footage is being included so I don’t really see why its an issue when there is the option of having both versions.

Dan hall isn’t really interested in recons. He feels animation has raised the bar. The only reason we are getting recons for galaxy 4 and tenth planet is they both already exist

      February 28th, 2013 - 6:08am

agreed animation works better the Reconstructions are really good in terms of using what still survives from the episode but when it comes down to DVD Release animation works better in my opinion.

Hopefully by the time these have all been animated they will have quite a few members of the main cast prepared in animated form which should save them some money and make more episodes per story feasible.

    • Anonymous

The Daleks’ Master Plan? Nine of the parts are missing and would need to be animated (ten if they include Mission to the Unknown) which is well out of their budget, even if split up.

    • Anonymous

      February 22nd, 2013 - 11:26am

if the BBC STOP the revisited (special editions) and give the animators the money from them they my be able to do more.

      February 22nd, 2013 - 11:28am

another good idea is if the BBC remake all the lost stories using the cast from an adventure in time and space.

      February 24th, 2013 - 2:40pm

*An Adventure in Space and Time

Personally I think that may be a fun little tribute but certainly not for a main feature. Plus you would have to cast so many more look-a-likes and it would just feel wrong not having the real actors. I would much prefer animations (or even reconstructions).

    • gordon

      February 24th, 2013 - 5:00pm

@ anonymous. Stopping revisits won’t give animated stories more money. The revisits are far cheaper to make than animated stories. Each story has its budget allocated based upon howmany copies its expected to sell. Less revisits doesn’t mean the is more animation budget. The limit is only 2 because the DVDs only sell a certain ammount of copies and at the moment 3eps
would be too expensive and the number of sales needed is far greater than the amount sales that it will achieve and it will lose money

  • Tim M

    February 17th, 2013 - 11:01am

So ‘The Tenth Planet’ is the last possible story that was awaiting announcement for DVD release. That pretty much completes the collection of the classic series. Unless they plan to animate more missing episodes. Namely ‘The (Underrated) Underwater Menace’ parts 1 and 4 plus ‘The Moonbase’ parts 1 and 3.

I’m so excited that they are animating the missing episode, and hopefully this will have a lot of special features and hopefully the picture quality is good to! Don’t trust everything you read in the papers! Matt once said he will leave at some point in the future; which is an obvious statement that is true of any actor in a continuous role. However, the papers printed the heading ‘MATT SMITH QUITS’ which is hardly the same.

This is excellent news! and fits well for the 50th Anniversary! πŸ˜€ l was originally annoyed at animation but l now think its the best way to go! l think people should stop looking at what we’ve lost when it comes to missing episodes in a way and look at what we still have! l mean we still have the first regeneration! how amazing is that and even though there are more than 100 missing episodes, think about other TV Series from the 60s and how they were kept. Having said that though it would be amazing to see the count drop below 100 πŸ™‚

Hard to belive that there are many missing episodes of 1980s series such as The Adventure Game, Finders Keepers and, famously, many UK versions of Fraggle Rock with Fulton Mackay – I find it quite unbelievable. Tenth Planet part 4 is arguably the most famous missing episode of….well…..anything! Dr Who or otherwise!

    • Planet Dalek

      February 17th, 2013 - 8:21pm

It should happen (quite a while off) when we get to below 100 missing epidodes! We’re only on… what?… 106? I can never remember!

Look at it this way: We lost dozens of episodes in the 1970s but those who are loyal to episodes will find the ones that are out there!

    • MasterKasterborous

      February 24th, 2013 - 2:46pm

Indeed it’s 106 missing episodes. Doctor Who is pretty well off actually and that’s really down to its loyal fans who have literally tracked down episodes from across the globe. There may be more out there or we could have found every frame that still exists. We will never know…

    • Anonymous

      February 24th, 2013 - 3:19pm

Several episodes are still unaccounted for so who knows what we will see in the future, but equally ones we think are gone may show up again (such as the Australian copy of The Underwater Menace Episode 2 which was believed wiped, but showed up two years ago).

    • MasterKasterborous

      February 24th, 2013 - 8:50pm

Well, all the 60s episodes were wiped, all 253 of them! The least likely to show up is The Feast Of Steven as no copy of the episode was ever made and the original was destroyed.

      February 18th, 2013 - 3:56pm

no its not they should do a half recon half animating or even hire bablecouler to couler 2 part 60s stories starting with
