Big Finish Torchwood 2.2 Zone 10

Available to order from www.bigfinish.com

They call it “Pulse” – a radio signal which has puzzled the world for 40 years. But now Toshiko Sato has solved it.

She’s uncovered a message which leads her to Russia, and into an uneasy alliance with the KVI – the Russian equivalent of Torchwood. Toshiko needs to get into Zone 10 – a frozen wasteland which officially doesn’t exist.

An intergalactic war was once fought in Zone 10. And it turns out there’s a survivor.

These covers are beginning to remind me of the Sarah Jane Smith series – this one in particular reminds me of Snow Blind

Why have they not done a multi character story? Or do they still want to get the entire team together (they still need Owen)

Maybe 2.6 will be..? Sounds right for a finale

Unfortunately a team-up story of that ilk seems all but out of the question right now – Eve Myles recently tweeted that the Season One finale, ‘More Than This’, was her final time playing the role of Gwen Cooper (a rather bizarre turn of events, since that story doesn’t feel like a swansong for Gwen in the slightest – if anything, it sets her up as the head of Torchwood Three in Jack’s absence!), whilst there’s been no mention of Burn Gorman’s potential involvement by Big Finish as of yet.

As for whether 2.6 would be the right time for an ensemble finale, you’d think so, yet 1.6 (Season One’s finale) barely even touched upon its run’s main plot arc (the Committee, whose threat will presumably extended into Season Two as a result), so clearly the BF writing team aren’t thinking of these as finales in the traditional sense.

My worry now is that if Myles is indeed leaving, the writing team are going to have to get increasingly desperate in terms of which characters from Torchwood’s past they select to lead future plays – having Sergeant Andy and Suzie Costello take centre-stage for a third of Season Two is a nice surprise, for instance, but I’d be wary about future seasons spending too much time flashing back to pre-‘Children of Earth’ events. Sure, ‘COE’ and especially ‘Miracle Day’ didn’t leave the show’s lore in the most flexible of states, but given that the odds of the series ever returning to TV are slim at best, why not start introducing new team members so that we can move beyond ‘Miracle Day’, perhaps even have the Family reveal what Plan B involves and take Torchwood to new frontiers?
