Big Finish The Eighth Doctor Adventures Empty Vessels

No Empty Threat

Paul McGann, Nicola Walker and Hattie Morahan star in The Eighth Doctor Adventures: Empty Vessels, a brand-new box set of full-cast audio drama, released today.

In their latest adventures, the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) and his companions Helen (Hattie Morahan) and Liv (Nicola Walker) respond to cries for help from two spacecraft in the far reaches of the cosmos – where they encounter shocking dangers.

First, an unsettling encounter on a ghost ship offers hints of the past and future – including a glimpse at Helen’s potential life beyond the Doctor.

And then, the time travellers encounter an old enemy – the Zygons. Voiced by Nicholas Briggs, these shape-shifting aliens make their first appearance in the Eighth Doctor Adventures range since 2009’s Death in Blackpool.

Doctor Who – The Eighth Doctor Adventures: Empty Vessels is available to pre-order now for just £19.99 (download to own) or £24.99 (download to own + collector’s edition 3-disc CD box set). Please note: the collector’s edition CD box set is strictly limited to 1,500 copies and will not be repressed.

The two new tales featuring the Eighth Doctor and his companions are:

Eos Falling by Matt Fitton

The Doctor, Helen and Liv find themselves on an abandoned spacecraft, hurtling towards an inhabited world. The crew have vanished – but the TARDIS travellers are not alone on this empty vessel…

Have they really discovered a ghost ship?

Lure of the Zygons – Parts One and Two by Roy Gill

A distress call draws the Doctor, Liv and Helen to a remote world and a crashed ship, where Captain Elhan is searching for her lost sibling…

As the storms close in, the two crews must investigate the wreck together. In the darkness, the Zygons are waiting…

The cast of Eos Falling includes Orlessa Altass as Jenkar, Thomas Michaelson as Roscoe, Molly Harris as Willa, and Holly Jackson Walters as Crew. And, Lure of the Zygons features Nisha Nayar as Shay Elhan, Maddison Bulleyment as Wren Elhan, Ben Arogundade as Lind Tavener, and Eric Stroud as Kayon Yolen.

Paul McGann said: “Back with Nicola and Hattie, and not before time! I’ve missed them. There’s an ease, we can just get straight to it, but in the stories, it feels like we’re still finding out about one another.”

Hattie Morahan added: “Matt’s script for Eos Falling is really haunting and very moving. Helen’s starting to think, where do I end up? I’m planetless now and sort of timeless, but I am mortal. So it must end up somewhere, what’s in store for me?”

Nicola Walker commented on the second story: “The Zygons are quite disturbing – huge, fleshy, suckered, evil, whispery, strange blob creatures. Lure of the Zygons is about the ability to replicate human emotion and memory. And just because something looks like it’s human, presents as human, at what point does it reveal itself to not be human?”

And Nicholas Briggs, who voices the Zygons, said: “I think the reason the Zygons are so popular with Doctor Who fans is because Terror of the Zygons, made back in 1975, was such a corking story. It was so beautifully directed and beautifully played. And they’re always fun to use because of their ability of assuming other people’s appearance, which is a handy sci-fi plot device!”

This is the second of 2025’s Eighth Doctor Adventures box sets, after November’s Causeway. Both can be pre-ordered together in a multibuy bundle for just £38 (download to own) or £47 (download to own + collector’s edition CD).

Alternatively, listeners can buy this release as part of a bundle of all 15 Classic Doctor Who box sets released in 2025 for just £285 (download to own) or £352.50 (download to own + collector’s edition CD).
