I wouldn’t get your hopes up it’ll literally be a re released Doctor and a few existing monsters, we know there’s talk of a ruth Doctor with glasses, wouldn’t be surprised if it was just her and a weeping angel. Shove Yaz in there with a different colour jacket

That’s definitely possible, but a few of these kinds of sets have been pretty good. The ones that gave us the Romanas for instance. I know it’s a long shot and I’m probably going to be disappointed but there’s a CHANCE it might be something really good. I don’t really see any indication of there being any new tooling necessary for the other three sets, so MAYBE they put it into this set and gave us something really good and new. Possibly. We’ll see.

    • The Outcast

      March 19th, 2024 - 8:35am

The three-pack won’t contain a Fugitive Doctor. The glasses version was a hypothetical future variant, not something that’s actually on the cards.

And whilst the three-pack won’t be anything entirely new (e.g. we’re not getting 2013 Cybermen or something), usually we get one or two new heads/bits, so there’ll likely be something new in there.

Is there a reason CO said they’d never release the Troughton fur coat from the Five Doctors figure? Expenses maybe? Just seems odd to me considering they released the Abominable Snowman version, as an exclusive, yet instantly ruled out releasing a Five Doctors variant, I assume to keep it an exclusive.

Yet now their idea of how exclusive an online exclusive is seems to have changed what with Al casually saying on launch that the Fugitive Doctor will hopefully get a variant, with a tiny change at that. (Which, arguably, has hurt the sales of the Fugitive Doctor set, or been a contributing factor.)

All I’m saying is I’m pretty sure no one who got the Abominable Snowman set would’ve objected to a Five Doctors version. It’d have been considerably different. Now I’ll have to make a custom to complete ‘The Five Doctors’ I have lol.

Yes I’m sure it was to keep the original Exclusive. I should imagine it would have Greatly affected sales of the Original Set if CO had mention the Five Doctors Variant would be coming out later in the year (maybe even in a B&M Exclusive Set) I should imagine loads of people would have held off buying to purchase the Other variant (Maybe at a Discount price).

I was wondering if the reduced number of sets is possibly linked to a new push on general merchandise. Makes sense to focus less on the ‘budget line’ when you’re pushing/re-launching the main line.

The set title was “Friends and Foes” plural – so presumably two friends and two foes somehow.

One thing is for certain though, it’s definitely not the Fugitive Doctor or Movellans.

    • Anonymouse

      February 26th, 2024 - 5:31pm

B&M have IMO dug their own grave in regards to the success – or not – of this range. Poor distribution models, coupled with greedy over – expansion of new stores post – COVID and a desultory and truncated foray into online selling (this admittedly not helped by the Royal Mail strike), have resulted in a situation whereby supplies of these sets are lingering/stagnating in some parts of the country for months on end.

Meanwhile, elsewhere there are genuine fans/collectors like me who can’t get hold of these figures in the nearest five or six branches and are now at a point where we either cannot or will not incur the expense of travelling farther afield or paying scalpers’ prices to get them from Amazon or eBay.

The last time I ventured into my local B&M (which was just before Christmas 2022) there was hardly ANY stock on the toy section shelves, let alone the Doctor Who sets. And no, they hadn’t had a last – minute run on toy sales – the shelves had been like that for weeks. It’s been closed since October due to the floods and I think is due to re – open next month, but I won’t be queuing at the doors to get in when it does. And I can be pretty damn sure there wouldn’t be any Doctor Who figure sets available even if I did.

    • FH

      February 26th, 2024 - 6:02pm

Are scalpers really as big of a problem as people make out? I don’t understand this as that hasn’t been my experience at all. Sure the ones that overprice are meh, but who’s really buying from them? Most of the sets I see on there (assuming they’re the recent ones) are hardly a higher price than they are in-store. I literally just casually bought the Hurndall + Dalek set for £22 on eBay the other day. (Cheapest I can see on there now is £24.99 but there were tons for £23.99 when I bought mine.) I paid 1p more than the retail price. That was including postage and packing btw, so ultimately I basically bought it for cheaper than retail price considering I didn’t waste any petrol/travel money doing so. I don’t have a B&M near me so all the sets I’ve ever gotten are from eBay and they’ve all been nice, convenient and cheap. I’m just saying, all this effort going to different stores, etc, do people never think to just look at the cheapest sets on eBay and paying the extra couple of pounds they’d have spent on travel anyway?

    • Anon

      February 26th, 2024 - 6:32pm

Anonymouse you are complaining that your local branch hardly had any toys in but then say they had been closed due to flood damage. Perhaps that’s why they had no stock!

    • Anon

      February 26th, 2024 - 7:43pm

It’s funny, I don’t buy these but always see loads in the various branches in my area. Mind you if I wanted them they probably would not have them!

    • Rex F

      February 27th, 2024 - 12:53am

FH: Your method only works when there are leftover stocks that B&M sell off at a discount (it’s my method too). It’s no good if you’re a completist, or the sets you want are underproduced and/or popular (e.g. Hartnell TARDIS, earlier Daleks).

    • Martino

      February 27th, 2024 - 11:04am

People missing the point that really these are collectables, not toys. I have collections that I’ve not been able to ‘complete’ after 20, almost 30 years. If you’re a completist, then you *do* pay what the online market says they’re worth. That’s the joy of collecting. My Dad was a collector of diecast aircraft, which can never be ‘complete’ – he spent years looking for a specific item. You chase items. You enjoy the collecting. If you don’t enjoy the hobby, you’re doing something wrong.

It seems odd that they would postpone a book that has already been published in hardcover. And I’m sure that I read somewhere on here that they had confirmed that Gatwa will get Targets of a couple of episodes from his first season.

I can’t see them deciding to have no Targets published this year, what with the big push to reinvigorate the show.

    • Bookcollector

      February 19th, 2024 - 3:28pm

Should clarify. I’m not keen on the hardback target book idea simply because a, they don’t fit easily on shelving and b, when money is tight already hardback books are an unnecessary addition to the mainly paperback target range. If they were only out in hardback then yes I would buy them but considering most of the new BBC books have been direct paperbacks then I think paperbacks are the way they should be done.

It’s fascinating how the prices of the exclusive 14th Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver SUNK after they were made available again, despite selling out just as quickly. I wonder if this was simply due to it no longer being the current Sonic Screwdriver. Maybe it was the reaction to the specials that caused them to be as undesired? Or simply just the hype no longer being around. Although the hype dying was a predictable metric… Just seems bizarre to me all these people that paid £200 for one that was known was only going to be around for a short while. Sure it wasn’t widely known that there would be new Sonic after the 60th but it WAS known. If you’re going to sink £200 into something you could’ve at least done some research on it beforehand.

Ooh, that’s fascinating! Just watched some videos of people reviewing the bootlegs. Weirdly, they’re not that badly made lol. The light is brighter and actually reaches the tip of the screwdriver, unlike the genuine one. But there’s obvious problems with it too. It’s bizarre to me that they go to great effort in replicating the screwdriver so perfectly, yet it metaphorically falls a part in so many basic areas.

    • daz

    • booboo

      February 19th, 2024 - 3:10pm

Things are very odd, saw a suggestion from a (overseas) retailer they bought bootlegs from same source as legitimate CO stock.

Many sellers are also selling standard 14th, 12th and 10th sonics as well as the Ltd 14th “counterfeit” sonics, presumably all fake?

Many are based in Poland but shipping from china, some don’t post full business address (against ebay rules) i assume ebay, CO, trading standards, BBC Studios are all trying to stamp on this with no effect so far. Many of these sellers have had the listing up for weeks.

I’m astonished this is happening in plain site and nothing is being done.

    • Rex F

      February 19th, 2024 - 3:15pm

Bearing in mind that so many of these things start off as CAD files now, could someone have got hold of those and used them to produce a more accurate knock off? We know the Chinese factories leak prototypes and early figures, so why not data too?

    • booboo

      February 19th, 2024 - 3:21pm

Still have to have a factory production line set up, tooling (which costs 1000s), assembly, electronics manufacture, paint matches and masks, box manufacture and printing. This is some set up to do this and someone has gone to a lot of trouble to match the original to almost as exact copy.

we only tend to deal with official information here and there is none.

On top of that reading around there is a lot of uncertainty here, some were told no photos whereas others have clearly (we assume) been allowed to take them, especially of unapproved items according to the label, hearsay also suggests some of this might not even get made leading to disappointment.

In the past items were there to drum up retailer interest and gain orders, many items shown before have never seen the light of day.

If there is anything official or “definite” we will post it

The Meep as a plushie really does work but my concern is that we’ll be so far past the airing of the episode that no one will bother anymore. Same with the Wrarth. CO have one of the biggest stands, but they’re one of the companies with screened off areas. There’s a blurry image from a video where you can make out what has to be the three figures. Don’t expect detail though, you wouldn’t know what they were without seeing the episodes. Yes Rex F. The figures certainly look lovely from the photo. Fingers crossed we get them and more before the Summer or hopefully around broadcast of Season One.

I wonder if we’ll finally get some New Series Novels again? I sorely missed them after they seemingly stopped after Jodie’s first three. They were always a nice little way to add in some extra stories to a Doctor’s tenure and always looked good on display. Hopefully we’ll see them return. I love the Target books but some original material would be really nice.

I’m the opposite now. Target only for me from now on. There are two new novels coming this year but they are £14.99 each and I’ve decided to stop getting original fiction. If they just did paperbacks I might consider it but the hardbacks are a no for me now

I miss the year’s when they stopped doing the ‘Doctor Who Storybook’ which was a great companion to the yearly Doctor Who Annual. The decline of the New Series Adventures 3-Book release every year is also sadly missed.

I would have thought church on ruby road’s DVD release would have a date by now. Especially when you consider the target book is out in twelve days!
