Doctor Who Magazine Issue 567

Going on holiday might not be so easy this year, but we can remember some of the highlights of summers past in the new issue of DWM:

  • A celebration of the BBC’s Doctor Who exhibitions in the 1970s, from the Science Museum in London to Middlesbrough Town Hall, plus Blackpool and Longleat. 16 pages packed full of previously unseen photos, and memories from fans who were there.
  • A guide to Doctor Who filming locations.
  • Apocrypha takes a trip to Blackpool with The Nightmare Fair, the Doctor’s rematch with the Celestial Toymaker.
  • The Fact of Fiction visits a sinister amusement park in the 2013 episode Nightmare in Silver.
  • An exclusive first-look at the forthcoming Blu-ray Special Edition of The Web of Fear.
  • Tributes to Jackie Lane (who played the First Doctor’s companion Dodo in 1966) and Damaris Hayman (who played Olive Hawthorne in 1971’s The Dæmons).
  • A review of The Collection: Season 24 Blu-ray box set.
  • Results of the 2021 DWM Poll.
  • Sufficient Data explores Doctor Who’s big ideas.
  • Previews, reviews, news, prize-winning competitions, Time and Space Visualiser and more.

For all those asking there’s no comic strip. There also doesn’t look like there’s one next issue either.

There might be some original fiction next issue though. I’m not sure. In the ‘Next Issue’ trail it says “Black Powder – A new Adventure by Joy Wilkinson”

Whether that’s a new comic strip she’s written or a new book release, or simply a story she’s written for the magazine…Who knows?

Oh, right. I’ve just read Marcus’ editorial.

Black Powder is a new piece of thirteenth Doctor fiction written especially for the magazine. Part one is in the next issue.

Finally. The page count returns to 84 pages next issue too. It’s currently 76.

I’m not surprised. If you paddled in the sea at Bkackpool in the 70s, anything could float by…

Anonymous LOL…..I thought it was only me that thinks they are over egging the canon too far now. All those stories in the gap between planet of fire and caves of andzroanzi are hard to take credibly.

You are not alone in that dale. I find it hard to credit the peri stories. After what must now be decades of travel she doesn’t age and happens to put the same outfit on for caves she was wearing hundreds of stories ago! Sometimes less really is more.

worth getting this time for the exhibitions feature alone but i will buy for the tributes to Damaris and Jackie. So nice to see the third doctor treating a sontaran and sea devil to a day trip to blackpool. Although i couldn,t imagine a sea devil emerging from the irish sea especially with all the effluent that was pumped into the sea back in the 70s. they couldn,t get out quick enough.

I think the Sontaran will regret not rolling it’s trousers up though, he’ll have very wet socks under there!

So that’s what gave Blackpool its ‘bouquet’!!

Should be a good issue, if a little poignant with the two tributes.

Did you download John Collier’s free e-book on the original Blackpool exhibition? Almost (but not quite) the last word on the subject. A sequel coming is this August to which I’ve contributed a bit!
