Titan Comics Doctor Who Time Lord Victorious #1

Available to order from www.forbiddenplanet.com

A thrilling new adventure for the Tenth Doctor (as played by fan-favorite David Tennant) that sees the shocking return of his deadliest enemies: the Daleks! But things aren’t what they seem – time is all wrong, and something is coming that terrifies even the Daleks…

The first of two oversized issues kicking off the BBC’s highly anticipated multi-platform Doctor Who epic, TIME LORD VICTORIOUS!

Titan Comics announced today its involvement in BBC Studios multi-platform Doctor Who story Time Lord Victorious, launching two over-sized comic issues which will debut on September 2, 2020.

Available to pre-order now, Doctor Who: Time Lord Victorious #1 is a ground breaking new comic adventure for the Tenth Doctor that sees the return of the Doctor’s most iconic enemy, the Daleks.

Available in comic stores and on digital devices at release, Titan’s Doctor Who: Time Lord Victorious #1 comic is part one of a special two-part Tenth Doctor adventure that sees the Doctor’s deadliest enemy, the Daleks, make their Titan Comics debut.

When the Doctor faces his ancient foes once again, it soon becomes clear that things aren’t what they seem – time is all wrong and something is coming that terrifies even the Daleks.

Jake Devine, Editor, Titan’s Doctor Who Comics, says: “Titan’s comic story is quite unique, as it features the Tenth Doctor as seen in the recent Thirteenth Doctor comic series, so he’s not reached his so-called victory over time yet. But what has been fun to explore is the Doctor getting a glimpse of what’s to come and foreshadowing his own dark turn.”

Time Lord Victorious #1 is written by Eisner-nominated Jody Houser (Stranger Things, Star Wars, Spider-Man) with art by Roberta Ingranata (Witchblade).

The comic debuts with five covers for fans to collect: an official Time Lord Victorious iconic by artist Lee Binding; art covers by Andie Tong (TEKKEN), Priscilla Petraites (Rat Queens), a Dalek metallic ink version by Hendry Prasetya (Green Lantern) and a Dalek blue line sketch cover.

Time Lord Victorious is BBC Studios’ brand new multi-platform Doctor Who story told across audio, novels, comics, vinyl, digital, immersive theatre, escape rooms, and games. The adventure will tell a new and untold story, set within the Dark Times at the start of the universe, when even the Eternals were young. Following several Doctors across space and time as they defend their home planet from a terrible race, this is a story like no other.

Do these publications not get proof-read? Grammatical error in the last speech bubble on page 29 (“doesn’t” should be “don’t”, I think)! Otherwise, good first part to this multi-platform story.

The one on Amazon is difficult because it’s either the wrong cover on the sea devil compilation or the right cover and the wrong story info. I’m sure it will be done even though I’ve opted to just get the two individually released comics. It is definitely only a two part story isn’t it!

yes, the Amazon one is more expensive than 2 individuals, so i thinks its just the wrong cover

This is the first and only series of titan I’ll buy. I didn’t buy any others mainly due to the large number of items and cost but I want the books for this series so I’ve ordered this issue and when boo boo puts issue 2 on I’ll order that as well. Was going to wait for a collection but it I’d cheaper this instance to get them individually I think.

It still seems odd that the BBC are using a Doctor from a decade ago as the main figurehead for this Victorious series, when the current Doctor is ignored.

It would be for commercial reasons. Obviously the 10th Doctor gets more “bums on seats” so to speak. There’s a reason there is less 13th Doctor merchandise and it’s simply because it doesn’t bring home the bacon.

I tried to make that point here already. And got attacked for it. I know that there have always been stories going on in other media alongside the television series. But this hark back to Tennant (and McGann and Eccleston) on such a vast multi platform suggests something more of a reset and paving the way forward by reestablishing some things that might have been thought altered or lost. So many so-called bold moves forward as Chibnall has ego assassinated DW mythology, and now there’s this, with nary a thirteenth Doctor involvement, Time Lords (and presumably, Gallifrey), and Daleks? Maybe thirteen will turn up by saga’s end, but this seems to be a very conspicuous endeavor nonetheless.

the real answer is that they wanted to include all franchise holders in this, the commercial side, and some do not hold a licence for any 13th Doctor products and never will whilst they are the current “TV” Doctor.

This will appeal to a few thousand core fans which pale into insignificance compared to the TV audience, about 0.2% i would say if that.

You are looking for things that just are not there in this instance.

There must be something going on behind the scenes. 2018 three original novels were released (like normal when a new series is on) and then none since.

Surely there should have been three novels in 2019 and they haven’t announced any for 2020.

they did this year, all put on hold like many other things until later, or even cancelled

however i don’t thin the “new audience” are big merchandise buyers on the whole

(booboo: You are looking for things that just are not there in this instance.) Time will tell, booboo, time will tell. Reasoning with the current Who fanbase is pointless. We will all see what comes next beyond this era. And if there is actually anything, I’m sure all the kids will start texting about how fab that is when it comes. It’s just something for people like me, Classic into Wilderness Years into new era fans, that nobody respects anymore. It’s just sad that so many can’t grasp all we have lost. And I’ve been around long enough to know what we’ve lost. It is what is.

Don’t read things into this that aren’t there. Boo boo is right. Because this is a cross company product, the only doctor from new who big finish have is Tennant. He is the only one they can use. 2020 is an exception. Most merchandise has been delayed. First for the 2020 start date of series 12, many items scheduled for late 2019 were delayed, then covid struck which has delayed or cancelled large numbers of books and not just who material. The popularity of tennant is the same as the daleks in the sixties, massive while it happens but then the kids move on and merchandise fizzles away. Boo boo is right about newer fans, most of the kids and adults I know who love Jodie have no interest in toys.

Titan are in a bit of a bind with the 10th Doctor, aren’t they? They never published the (advertised) conclusion to their ongoing 10th Doctor series. I really want to read *that* story.

“most of the kids and adults I know who love Jodie have no interest in toys”

Surely franchise holders won’t look fondly on the show if they can’t make and sell things related to the current incarnation of the show.

Bob, stop gatekeeping. You don’t own Doctor Who. Respect is earned, not given, and unfortunately a lot of people who espouse similar views don’t earn the respect they try to proclaim they should have.

There’s plenty of material/content everyone in the fandom can enjoy, while also not raining on other’s parades constantly. I so wish more would practice that, instead of complaining about everything and straw manning everyone they disagree with

Looking forward to the comic and the rest of the crossover stuff, either way. Nice to see something new and interesting across various media.

J45ON96, it’s more typical that someone like myself can’t have any strong convictions, let alone express them, without being lectured by someone like yourself. It’s actually very Chibnall of you! Everyone and anyone in any sector of fandom is free to engage and enjoy anything they care to, and I’ve never contested that. And I stand by my convictions and observations. And if you don’t care for that, too bad. Tough. But a gatekeeper? I have no idea what you’re getting on about. And I’ve never claimed to “own” Doctor Who. I am merely relaying how I feel, and I don’t need your permission for that, or to apologize for that. Nor do I have to “earn” anyone’s respect. It seems to me that “fandom” is a lot less diverse now than it has ever been. Someone offers an opposing, differing viewpoint, and those who claim to espouse tolerance hop in and start lecturing. It’s been a long strange journey as a Who fan, and up until this current era there was a better balance than I see now. Didn’t I say, “It is what it is”? People should be free to share their convictions, feelings, and opinions here, whatever they are, and however they differ. And no one needs you telling them what to do.

Yes, it looks like TLV will be published before the continuation of Titan’s 13th Doctor ongoing year 2. The next one will be the Sea Devils story and our current Doctor will be with the 10th Doctor (and Martha?) for the foreseeable future. Would’ve preferred two separate ranges and storylines and a more expansive TLV contribution myself. The DW comics EU has really been diminished, unfortunately.

Bob James – maybe some of the issue, as it were, with what you’re saying is that booboo gave an actual factual response as to why the 13th Doctor is not in this project, but you’re still inclined to see TLV as some sort of sheepish fan appeasement. But we’ve long known that Big Finish (for example), are not allowed to use the current incarnation of the Doctor in their products. They’ve produced a huge, continuous stream of ‘Classic’ DW right through the new era, but I don’t think anyone’s claiming it was an appeasing reaction to the new stuff. You’re claiming to be an ilk of fan that nobody respects any more, but you’re claiming it in a thread about a product that I presume is everything you’d hope for. You don’t want the 13th in it, right? Perfect, then. Literally NONE of Big Finish’s product has the 13th in.

The other issue is something I’ve seen quite a lot recently, which is the slapping down of DW fan ‘credentials’, like “I’ve been watching since 1907 before it even existed, so I know what I’m talking about it”. You think there’s no reasoning with current fandom, but your ‘reasoning’ seems to be convincing them that the show now really is rubbish even if they think they enjoy it, like you know better. “It’s just sad that so many can’t grasp all we have lost.” I remember a rather snide “Kool-Aid” comment on another thread too. If someone has only ever seen The Timeless Children and no other episode, and loved it, they are still a DW fan.

      June 18th, 2020 - 8:12pm

Thing is though, with the argument that only certain licences can use the 13th Doctor… I mean, Yes, we know this to be the case specifically with Big Finish. But that doesn’t explain why, in a multi-format endeavour, any of the other licences do not have an element with the 13th Doctor – coz, there are quite a few of them: Titan, BBC Books, Doctor Who Magazine, BBC Audio. Now whose to say the current Doctor isn’t included, we don’t have all the details yet. But at this point, considering the launch poster/press release, it seems unlikely.

Doctor Who merchandise has been in decline for the past decade – bit by bit it has been reduced, year after year. Lets remember The Doctor Who Experience made Cardiff lose a reported Million pounds. Business is business. And I assume that’s the only reason this project is the way it is. It’s not an “appeasement” as some are suggesting, businesses don’t work like that. But at some point a proposal was made to various companies to use the 10th Doctor, and now we have ‘Time Lord Victorious’.

Now the argument that the people buying merchandise are a small percentage of the shows audience… well, yes, Absolutely. But the key point is that this percentage is massively smaller than it was during Tennants run. Hugely smaller. And that’s ok too. The shows been around for 15 years. There’s no way it could have sustained that level of success.

Just remember, over a million 10th Doctor figures were purchased. Now figures are produced in very Limited numbers, not in the millions but in the thousands.

To conclude, this project involves lots of various companies – and I can only think of one that specifically cannot use anything from the current era of the show. This is a project whose unique selling point is its multimedia approach… the reason some of the those companies haven’t incorporated the current Doctor cannot be down to licensing issues if we know they can and do use the current Doctor. So why the absence? As far as i’m concerned the only answer left on the table is a simple one, business, business, business.

      June 18th, 2020 - 9:30pm

Reece – yes, I’d agree it’s unlikely the 13th will show up at all given how it has been presented, and I couldn’t really say why those that may be allowed to use her are not. In DW, the current incarnation is king/queen, so my own speculation would be that they’ve just been asked not to touch anything that could creatively compromise the upcoming TV series that’s a work-in-progress. Possibly this is even a warm-up to bigger plans on the TV series further down the line, like a multi-doctor story with the 10th. Of course that will get labelled by the Chib/JW haters as course-correction or an admission of failure, but as I understand it Chib has a five-year plan of sorts so whatever’s coming may already be sketched out (or it may not be at all, but to the 13th naysayers it’ll be more scientific evidence of their ‘rightness’, just like the graphs of ratings).
I do think, however, that a maximum push for increased business would have included the 11th, and possibly even the 12th. Matt Smith was hugely popular, it wasn’t just Tennant. Using the 8th seems a little too ‘hardcore’ for wider consumption, and that may arguably even apply to the 9th to a lesser extent.
So I’d lean towards creative control being the primary reason for the 13th not being in this project, just so nothing gets covered that compromises future TV storylines. But putting 10th at the centre yes I agree is a sales effort. A shame they didn’t weave in anyone before the 8th…

What people are complaining about most is how those who hate the current version of the show feel this intense need to turn EVERY thread on EVERY forum into an attack on the current show. It get SO tiresome. You don’t like the show. We get it. No one cares. Keep it to the appropriate threads and forums.

Interesting dalek design, it is a photo shopped dalek publicly image from 2005. I like the idea of seeing a slatless time war dalek. Although it should just be the sloped seam, not a raised dead planet band. The band was exclusive to the classic daleks as it was more attached than part of the bodywork unlike the seam on the time war dalek.

When the whole collection is out would it be possible to compile a list of the reading order. I know people will say ‘they’re stand alone and there’s no set order’ but just like the comics and the audios and the tv series for example there is always an order they’re supposed to be viewed/read/listened to for everything to make 100% sense
