Episodes 2 – 6 were feared lost forever but now episodes 2, 4, 5, and 6 have been recovered. Unfortunately, episode three is still missing but a restoration team has reconstructed this part of the story using a selection of the 37 images that were available from the episode along with the original audio which has been restored.

The Web of Fear is available to download from itunes now.

The TARDIS narrowly avoids becoming engulfed in a web-like substance in space. It then arrives in the London Underground railway system, the tunnels of which are being overrun by the web and by the Great Intelligence’s robot Yeti.

The time travellers learn that this crisis was precipitated when Professor Travers, whom they first met in the Himalayas some forty years earlier, accidentally caused one of the Yeti to be reactivated, opening the way for the Intelligence to make another invasion attempt.

The travellers work alongside army forces – led initially by Captain Knight and then by Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart – as they battle against the alien menace, hampered by the fact that one of their number has fallen under the Intelligence’s influence and is a traitor in their midst.

The Intelligence’s ultimate aim is to drain the Doctor’s mind. The Doctor manages to sabotage the device with which it intends to achieve this, so that he can drain the Intelligence’s mind instead, but he is ‘rescued’ by his friends before he can bring his plan to fruition.

The Intelligence is repelled into space, and the Doctor and his friends leave the army to clear up the mess.

was just comparing the BBC? i guess you can call it that, Reconstruction of Part 3 with that of Loose Cannon’s Reconstruction. I have to say the BBC version is alot better. I do hope if animation is used for this DVD Release that they still also put the iTunes/BBC Reconstruction though i prefer Reconstructions for their surviving material released than Animation.

Back in those days there wasn’t any video and we competed to be the first to get the latest target book…it was a thrill finding out which stories were coming out and what new covers the great achilleos was going to come up with..we waited to see what was planned for publication…
simple days and web of fear was such a good read….Ive still got a lot of the flyers target sent out…they even released prints of some of the covers and we were over the moon…

I just watched BBC reconstruction and I have watched all the loose cannon versions. Still think they are better than animation.

      October 11th, 2013 - 1:45pm

yeah, as I said below, why are they only using 37 telesnaps from episode 3 when there are 58 of them on the classic bbc site?

    • booboo

      October 11th, 2013 - 1:47pm

timing to fit in with the soundtrack maybe?

it can be very distracting if they change images to quickly or unevenly

Have to say I’m looking forward to seeing the recon of Web episode 3, because it’s not animated but done in a more “traditional” style. People who we’re hoping for animation, don’t worry I’m sure the recon will be great! 🙂

      October 11th, 2013 - 2:05pm

I think it will be animated for dvd at a guess. If they were using the recon they would Not be Holding it back till the end of february.

Not sure if this is animation or part of a personal project of his but it looks interesting!

However we watch episode 3, the unfolded joy of knowing we now have 5 episodes and 1 to find is far better than watching 1 episode with 5 to find. And hey, who knows, they may have found episode 3 and it’ll be in the next batch of lost episodes found. That’ll cheer those of buying the DVDs only. Either way, I’m still on cloud 9.

      October 11th, 2013 - 12:37pm

Sorry, I just wanted to get it cleared up. 🙂 There isn’t really any other possibility’s though and I didn’t even know classic covers were reversible until a couple of days ago.

What I don’t understand is that it says that episode 3 has been reconstructed using 37 telesnaps however on the classic bbc site here are 58! SO have they made a full reconstruction or only half of one?

Oh my giddy Aunt. Just ordered from the BBC Shop. Can’t wait to hear the commentaries and see the extras. Watching the clip with the Doctor and Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart was a shout out loud moment of delight, but sadness to think that neither Pat nor Nick are with us in person to see this classic material.

Kind of fitting that this story had been (mostly) recovered considering the involvement of TGI in the 50th storyline so far.
