Candy Jar Books is celebrating a busy autumn with a host of new and returning Doctor Who titles, including three brand-new releases available through the publisher’s website, two much-loved collections returning to pre-order and three titles now receiving wider retail releases.
The latest releases span limited-edition fiction, classic UNIT adventures, Dalek artwork and explorations of two landmark eras of Doctor Who.
Among the new releases available through the Candy Jar website are Mutually Assured Domination: The Illustrated Edition, The Benton Files Collection and Dominators!: The Miriamis Manoeuvre, which will be dispatched within the next three weeks.
Mutually Assured Domination is a strictly limited edition of just 200 hardbacks, featuring brand-new illustrations by artist Martin Baines. The book also includes the Lucy Wilson Quark adventure Arcade of Doom, together with a free postcard. Every copy comes with Tim Gambrell’s The Miriamis Manoeuvre, the first book in the Dominators! range, completely free.
Dominators!: The Miriamis Manoeuvre, written by Tim Gambrell, launches a new range of adventures inspired by the classic Doctor Who story The Dominators. The novel expands on the universe established by the original television story and is also included free with copies of Mutually Assured Domination.
The Benton Files Collection features an exclusive new story by Tim Gambrell, What the Dickens?, which takes Sergeant John Benton into an alternate version of the events of The Web of Fear – one in which the Doctor never arrived.
It is Christmas Eve, and Benton is persuaded to tell one last story. But this time his adventure takes him into another dimension, where Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart and his team are fighting a desperate battle against the Yeti invasion. With the Doctor absent, the sinister Tobias Vaughn is behind the attack, and Benton discovers that knowledge from his own world could prove vital to the resistance.
The collection offers readers a very different take on familiar characters and events, with What the Dickens? available nowhere else.
The Havoc Files return
Following numerous requests from readers, two much-loved collections are also returning to pre-order.
The Havoc Files 1 and The Havoc Files 4 have both been expanded with four brand-new stories: Tarnished Uppers and Scuffed Soles by Tim Gambrell, A Country Mile and Sweaty Flow by Iain McLaughlin, and The Marked Town by Courtney Milnestein.
Both volumes also feature new covers by Richard Young.
The expanded editions give readers the chance to rediscover two popular collections while offering something new even to those who already own the original editions. Whether fans missed the books the first time around or simply want to revisit the stories, the new material gives them another reason to return to the Havoc Files.
Three titles enter wider retail
Three Candy Jar titles are now receiving wider retail releases, bringing them to a new audience through Amazon and other good retailers.
The first is an updated paperback edition of Exterminart!, the celebrated art book by legendary Doctor Who artist Andrew Skilleter.
Skilleter is best known for his evocative covers for the Doctor Who Target novelisations, producing more than forty covers during the 1980s. His career has also included official Doctor Who calendars, Who Dares poster prints, BBC VHS covers and the first covers for the Doctor Who Virgin New Adventures series.
Andrew Skilleter says: “My motivation for compiling this book was simple: to give fans a chance to see my work in one place, spanning decades. It’s about the journey I’ve had with the Daleks, and the fans who’ve supported me throughout it all. The new images in this edition are my way of paying tribute to these iconic characters that have stood the test of time.”
Candy Jar Books Head of Publishing Shaun Russell says: “We’ve had the honour of publishing several incredible Doctor Who art books, but it’s always a special experience to work with someone like Andrew. His Dalek artwork is legendary, and with this new paperback edition, we’re giving fans a chance to experience it like never before. The addition of new art makes this a particularly special edition for collectors.”
Doctor Who Christmas Specials: Twenty Years of Festive Adventures, edited by Baz Greenland, also receives a wider retail release. The book looks at two decades of Doctor Who Christmas specials, from David Tennant’s debut in The Christmas Invasion through to Twice Upon a Time.
The book examines how the Christmas specials became a major part of the festive television tradition, combining critical reflections, behind-the-scenes insights and interviews with directors who worked on the specials.
Contributors include Jonathan Appleton, Kevin Heritage, TD Valesquez, PJ Montgomery, Peter Shaw, Philip Bates, Sean Mason, Tony Black, Matt Dennis, Darren Mooney, Craig McKenzie, Hugh McStay, Tom Dexter, Verity Russell, Joe Glass and Lee Thacker.
The book also features interviews with directors Paul Wilmshurst, Douglas MacKinnon, Farren Blackburn and Saul Metzstein, offering insights into the challenges of making Doctor Who at Christmas and the pressure of producing television watched by millions.
Editor Baz Greenland says: “It’s fascinating to see how each director approached the unique demands of a Christmas episode – the tone, the visuals, the emotion. These are people who had to make it feel epic and intimate at the same time.”
Also receiving a wider retail release is When I Say Run, Run!: The Patrick Troughton Years by Tom Dexter.
The book explores the Second Doctor’s era while placing the programme within the rapidly changing world of British television during the 1960s.
Rather than concentrating solely on the television stories, When I Say Run, Run! examines the production process behind the programme, from monster design and special effects to the pressures created by limited budgets and an increasingly demanding production schedule.
Shaun Russell says: “We’re delighted to have so many different Doctor Who books reaching readers at the moment. There’s a real mixture here, from new fiction and limited editions to Andrew Skilleter’s extraordinary Dalek artwork, returning favourites and three books now reaching a much wider retail audience.
“It’s a great reflection of what we’re trying to do at Candy Jar – continuing to find new ways to explore Doctor Who, while giving fans something special to collect and enjoy.”
Further Doctor Who releases are already in development, with two new Lucy Wilson adventures – Eggs of Darkness by Christine Harris and The Ark in Time by Iain McLaughlin, featuring Erimem – due to follow.
