The Caves of Androzani CD Soundtrack

Available to order in the UK from www.amazon.co.uk

Available to order in the USA from www.amazon.com #ad

The first archive release of a Doctor Who soundtrack since the Doctor Who 2005 British TV comeback, featuring music by British electronic composer Roger Limb.

The Caves of Androzani was Roger Limb’s seventh of eight contributions to the series, and the first of his two very successful collaborations with director Graeme Harper.

Broadcast in March 1984, the 4 episodes showed the regeneration of The Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) into The Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker). In 2009 The Caves Of Androzani was voted the best in the history of the series by fans. Roger Limb comments on working on The Caves of Androzani: “In 1984-5 we had new tools at our disposal including the Fairlight Computer Music Instrument (CMI) which I used to create the rhythmic percussion figures, and the wonderfully versatile Yamaha DX7 which was a landmark in the development of the synthesiser.

I’d read the scripts but it was only when I saw the edited episodes on VHS that my ideas started to take shape. The greatest slice of luck was having Graeme Harper as director. He was able to explain exactly what he wanted from me, a great advantage!”

Roger Limb was part of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop team which he joined in 1972. Perhaps best known for his work on Doctor Who, from 1981 to 1985, Limb composed the music for the The Keeper of Traken, Four to Doomsday, Black Orchid, Time-Flight, Arc of Infinity, Terminus, The Caves of Androzani and Revelation of the Daleks.

In the 80s and 90s Limb has contributed music to a number of television series including The Justice Game, Aliens in the Family, Thinkabout, The Box of Delights, Kevin and Co, Martin Luther: Heretic, Storytime and the Look and Read. He is also known for the now cult “Swirley” tune, a happy piece of electronic music that was used as the theme to the BBC’s Service Information news bulletins in the late 70s and early 80s.

How come this is going to be released in the UK on my birthday (March 25), but not in America until April 26? Why do I have to wait a month after my birthday for an amazing score. I hope they release one for various stories like ‘Survival’, ‘The Invasion Of Time’, even the entire ‘Trial Of A Time Lord’.

I really hope they make a CD of the cassette from 1986 which had the dominic Glynn theme tune, the original theme tune, and the disco version.

I am glad someone mentioned The Leisure Hive. It is extremely good music, perhaps the best.

I haven’t watched the Leisure Hive in yonks so I can’t remember the music terribly well. Revelation of the Daleks had very similar music (probably cos it’s by the same person) which is why it’s one of my favorite Dalek stories.

I don’t get why Caves of Androzani is so popular with fan’s. I saw it once and I didn’t like it at all, just found it to be so boring.

If anyone want’s to tell me why it’s popular then please do, I don’t mind, honest.

Give me ‘GENESIS OF THE DALEKS’ anyway 😀

I dont know either. I think it’s one of the better davison stories, but not long ago, DWM did a poll on the best doctor who story ever. Caves of androzani came at number 1, and after that (i cant remember what order though) was city of death, human nature and the empty child. (possibly in that order)

    • DOCTOR WHO ONE

      January 24th, 2013 - 3:21pm

Yeah I have that issue with that poll inside it.

I’d have gone for Genesis of the Daleks at No.1 spot thou.

Many new series fan’s who’ve only seen the new series would probably suggest ‘Blink’ as No.1 story cos many new viewers begin watching Doctor Who by starting with that episode.

    • The Flying Shark

      January 24th, 2013 - 3:21pm

Blink came second, Genesis of the Daleks was third and I can’t remember the rest of the order.

    • The Silence

      January 24th, 2013 - 4:34pm

      1. The Caves of Adrozani
      2. Blink
      3. Genesis of the Daleks
      4. The Talons of Weng-Chiang
      5. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
      6. Human Nature/Family of Blood
      7. Pyramids of Mars
      8. City of Death
      9. The Robots of Death
      10. Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways

Well it’s one of Robert Holmes absolute Classic Storyline’s, Robert Holmes was the man who created the Sontarans and is well known for his Horror themed Stories, The Talon’s of Weng Chiang was one of these and has been considered along with Genesis of the Daleks as the top Doctor Who Classic Story ever made and you can tell how good it is when you compare other Peter Davison Stories with this one.

5 reasons why caves is diserving of the number 1 slot

      1. Its one of robert holmes best script
      2. Episode 1 and 3 has possibly the best cliffhangers in the almost 50 year history of the show
      3. Great performances all round especially by the villians
      4. Brilliantly directed by grahame Harper
      5. It proves that regeneration stories can be low key but still cause impact

    • McGann is the Doctor

      January 25th, 2013 - 10:14am

The whole thing about Caves of Adrozahni is that it’s about the Doctor, the Fifth Doctor specificly.

He has lost so many friends, witnessed so much death and destruction, by the time he gets into this situation on Adrozahni he doesn’t even get involved in it, his only motivation is to save Peri.

He’s not even sure if he like Peri or not, having only just met her, yet he risks his life for her, and in the end, gives his life so that she may live.

It’s such a great way to end the Fifth Doctor’s era, very fitting to his character .

    • The Monitor

      January 25th, 2013 - 5:56pm

The Caves of Androzani is one of the most presentable Doctor Who stories. It showcases the programme beautifully.

There is no writer to touch Robert Holmes. Ark, Genesis, Pyramids, Deadly and Caves are all brilliantly written.

Caves has spawned controversy for best part of 3 decades. It sums up the nitty-gritty 80s perfectly with easily the best and most graceful humanoid villain, the top three best direction of the whole series, some of the best dialogue, the best regeneration by far, good music, excellent story line….
