SDCC 2024 First to Market The Fifteenth Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver

You can see the packaging on various listings on www.ebay.co.uk or www.ebay.com

This item will be available in the UK in a few weeks time.

From the official Doctor Who Website

The brand new accessory from Character Options will be unveiled to fans on the Doctor Who booth at San Diego Comic-Con from Thursday 25th July, ahead of a wider release later in September 2024.

Character Options is delighted to reveal details of its brand-new Fifteenth Doctor’s sonic screwdriver, which will be available on the Doctor Who stand at San Diego Comic-Con.

Following Ncuti Gatwa’s first full season as the Doctor taking over our screens earlier this year, it seemed entirely fitting that the Fifteenth Doctor’s sonic screwdriver is to be given an exciting exclusive unveiling to fans on the Doctor Who booth at the San Diego Show!

Get the Fifteenth Doctor’s sonic screwdriver at San Diego Comic-Con ahead of its release in September 2024.

The limited-edition version boasts an exclusive ‘electro plated’ finish making it look like real polished steel and brass. It features two modes of operation, Open and Closed, as well as five brand new and totally unique sound and light effects, with each accessed by a different button sequence. It’s the perfect piece of memorabilia to start any Fifteenth Doctor collection. As expected from Character Options, the sonic comes in Regeneration style packaging with a sturdy mailer box.

Al Dewar, Head of Product Development, commented: “I’ve worked on a few sonic screwdrivers over the years, but it is safe to say that to date this is one of the most complex and different by a galactic parsec!

“The Fifteenth Doctor’s device is a major step up in terms of complexity and function for the sonic screwdriver as a toy. On this deluxe version there are many new features including a uniquely shaped, swivel-out Power Core complete with flickering Power Crystal Chamber and on/off sounds. There are also three distinctly different sounds with accompanying light FX; a standard sonic sound, a data sound, and a lifeform scan sound. The spring-out and retract Emitter section also has its own sound and finally the slide out analyser comes with its own sound completing the sound FX.

“To be able to release this brand-new deluxe version at the biggest Genre Expo in the World, just as we did the Fourteenth sonic screwdriver is truly amazing and our thanks go to Bad Wolf and BBC Studios without whom this would never have been possible.”

San Diego Comic-Con will see the first 1000 pieces go on sale, but fans will also be able to purchase this Special Edition of the Fifteenth Doctor’s new sonic device later in September 2024.

“back in the day” i think that would have happed, the amount of novelty merchandise available was astonishing.

Just needs someone with a little faith to take it on, although something is not sitting right with me as to how the brand is being treated at the moment.

fametek would be the most logical maybe https://www.https://www.fametek.com/collections/doctor-who.com/collections/doctor-who

Had this imported from SDCC and can safely say it’ll be very very worth the wait. You’ll be blown away when holding in hand…it’s like a prop replica but at an affordable price . The design of the prop really lends itself . Visually is very very striking.

Looking forward to getting one of these! By far one of the best sonic screwdriver toys ever done! I know it’s not a popular design choice but in terms of it being a toy … it’s fantastic!

    I know people aren’t happy that America are getting this first, especially with the two month gap for a uk release, but in reality it’s nothing new and it’s a good sign that we’re getting SDCC releases again;
2007: exclusive Dalek as well as the doomsday cyberman a month before uk
2008: exclusive 9th doctor and the majority of the exclusive 10th and 5th doctor 2 packs
2011: leela released 2 months before uk and with exclusive signature
2016: exclusive 13 pack where all figures where either new or tweaked
2020: not SDCC but a US exclusive 13th Doctor variant

Apart from the 13 doctors set, I haven’t heard anyone ever complain about the exclusivity of the other sets. As I said this is actually a return to what we used to have, the exclusivity is just more noticeable because the rest of the line isn’t back to the height of 2007. I didn’t mention every year because the ones I skipped were also available through UT or FB, but between 2016 and 2023 there was nothing at SDCC, so releases like this are bringing Doctor Who back into the spotlight, which can never be a bad thing.

I too wish we were getting this sonic sooner, but this isn’t special treatment for America, this is what CO have always done and will probably continue to do.

Great to see it coming !
I’m not sure if I like de design but we can’t deny that they try something new with it. Which is how they’ve made it last the show more than 60 years…

For those complaining about the fact it is released in US first… well, just be happy it is release at all.
Like people need a reason to complain.

I like the design for this. Ergonomic. I’m tickled by the fact that of all the things it can do, when Rogue scanned it it still registered as a screwdriver! Re continuity of the design, every Doctor kit-bashed it from the available technology of the era he or she was in, starting with the Third Doctor when he was stuck on 1970’s Earth. Of course it will always look different! 😀

Its ALWAYS been like this, SDCC is a massive showcase with exclusives available first there across all franchises. This is nothing new and its been happening for years now.

They’ve really diminished the value of Dr Who being for everyone and accepting everyone equally haven’t they? The show is now behind a paywall everywhere apart from the UK, meaning only those who can afford a streaming service can watch it. This sonic is first exclusive to those that either live near ComicCon, or can afford to travel but both ways only those who can afford ComicCon tickets. I don’t really understand the commercial decision to delay the UK release even further when it’s already so behind the hype of S1…

Nothing will have been delayed just got to its destination in a different manor. The SDCC stock was most likely flown in a huge extra cost whilst the main stock will be on the slow boat from china, there in nothing new about this, Argos used to do it all the time back in the day so they had some stock for catalogue launch.

Back in the UT days there was always a SDCC release first with the UK getting it later.

I hadn’t thought about that, that’s very interesting to know. Thank you!

      July 25th, 2024 - 1:35pm

There was no commercial decision to delay anything. Why make loose assumptions based on zero facts? This was an agreed partnership project with the BBC to repeat last years ‘very successful’ 14th Doctor sonic launch at SDCC.

It was agreed to ‘try’ to get a small volume of pieces out by air freight (so not cheaply) for this event a year ago. it boosts awareness and gets the product into the hands of US fans and influencers and revirewers. That versus moving the entire main bulk of the order headed for the UK that comes by sea freight. I understand the angst but its not a them and us scenario .. in reality if you live in the USA then currently its actually for the most part way more difficult and costly to get it anyway even when it launches.

I think put it in perspective … then make a sensible comment. Doctor Who was on BBC America and had very little reach … It’s now got a far greater reach not only in the USA but in other territories too. The paywall you describe applies to the BBC as well, which you pay a licence for thats at least on a par with most streamers .. so that statement is an of itself is nonsensical …

On the flip side this sonic is absolutely amazing something hopefully you’ll see later when videos of the thing start to emerge at Comic Com …

      July 25th, 2024 - 3:07pm

He was just expanding on it, and i doubt aimed at just one person, just giving the facts for everyone.

SDCC is a massive show case, you would be unwise to not use it if you can, Doctor Who stuff has always been sold there first, CO. Underground Toys, Funko, Titans whatever, so all this USA first and argumentative posts over a 1000 Sonics that you will be able to buy in a few weeks (and probably much cheaper in the UK as well) is pointless and senseless and that’s an end to it.

    • booboo

      July 25th, 2024 - 3:16pm

Oh and just for the record, the UK gets 99.99% of Doctor Who Merchandise first these days, the USA have a rehashed yatzee and a plant holder.

      July 25th, 2024 - 2:29pm

I don’t get your point cosmosboy98, who says I need to go both ways to get the sonic, I just need to relocate my life to America to get the sonic 🙂

    • Michael Rosen

      July 26th, 2024 - 2:06am

The difference between this and the 14th Doctor sonic launch last year is that on that occasion we were able to order the sonic on the same day as Comic Con and have it delivered within the week. This time, we’re seeing people buying their sonics at Comic Con knowing we won’t get ours for another 2 months.

    • booboo

      July 26th, 2024 - 8:30am

The manufacturing time allowed the 14th SDCC and UK stock to arrive at a similar time whilst this time the only way to “try” to get stock to SDCC in time was by airfreight at a considerable cost (its selling for $50 or about £40). The bulk of the stock has to come by shipping container which takes several weeks hence the difference.

So you have to wait a few months… did it really matter? You are still going to get one. Boo boo and al have explained the practical reasons behind it. Some people seem to be taking it as a personal affront!

You know I really don’t wanna be THAT guy, but given the quality of the finale, it’s really put me off buying any merch from this era. Which is sad because I really really want the show to thrive.
Also, is it me or did the sonic screwdriver always look like a gun?

Im with ozzy on this one. I have a feeling there are more “that guys” than not, David. Im pleased you approve of the new design, its not my cup of tea though. The sonic looks much cheaper and tackyer now. Having said that, i didnt like the last design much either, or whittakers. The last one looked like a kitchen piece.

YES. Very annoying to me, someone Irish who gets no streaming for ages and sadly miss out on player stuff, e.g. tales of the tardis. Ireland really gets the worst situation, no disney+ and can only watch bbc one live. Share the pain with you Anita

Hope everyone has learnt from the 14th Doctors supposedly “Limited Edition” to not spend a fortune on this.

No doubt the September limited release will be the first of many batches with a less shiny standard version too.

Then the shiny and standard colour variants further down the line.
