The Power of The Daleks – In Colour

The BBC Facebook Page has given a few details of a colour version of The Power of The Daleks.

It will be available to download from the BBC store at the end of December. The Colour version will also be available on a special blu-ray in February 2017

The BBC store download of the black and white version comes with an offer code for money off the colour version.

I hope the DVD does too.

The Ice Warriors and The Web of Fear are good buys. You should also consider The Underwater Menace with this being the most recent animated story before The Power of the Daleks is released. Hope this helps 🙂

(Neither ‘Web of Fear’ or ‘Underwater Menace’ were animated mind. Reconstructed with stills 🙂 )

‘The Underwater Menace’ has photos and soundtrack for missing episodes 1 and 4. ‘The Web of Fear’ has photos and soundtrack for missing episode 3. No animation on either of these stories unfortunately.

Sorry but this really gets me a bit annoyed…I will not upgrade to blu-ray and it feels like another cash grab to release a color version separately…why couldn’t they have provided both versions on the DVD release? I would’ve been interested in viewing this in color…but as a few have said the B/W is more authentic anyway…still annoyed though >:(

I’m sure they will release the colour version eventually on DVD as a lot of people still don’t use Blu-ray or the online store.

You better hope Phil Morris doesn’t find all 16mm prints of ‘The Power of the Daleks’…Otherwise that will mean yet another release! 🙂

Tim M – I would happy buy a second release for the chance to own the actual story in it’s original, complete form. Just not sure about buying a second Power of the Daleks to own it in color…but hey I’m happy, at least I’m getting A copy of it and it looks great in both b/w and color, so it’s all good I guess *shrugs*

I hope the BBC find every missing Episode, that way we can watch ever story with all the original acting. 🙂

      November 4th, 2016 - 11:48am

I would still choose the black and white version over the colour version when choosing to watch the story. It is more in keeping with what was originally presented to the audience. Plus, whilst the Daleks will look fine in colour, I’m not sure the skin colour of the Doctor, companions and inhabitants of Vulcan will look that good. You don’t have that issue with black and white…and surely,’Power of the Daleks’ is more atmospheric in black and white anyway.

Imagine if Patrick Troughton had gone for his original idea for his portrayal of the Doctor – I’d imagine the colour version would be even more controversial!

(For those who don’t know, he was originally going to do it in blackface!)

Agreed Peter. I’m having second thoughts about buying it on Blu-Ray. My choice of preference would be watching in black and white anyway.

Well it’s all a bit unfair if you don’t have a blu ray player eh! I love my blu rays so I’ll be getting it in December but sorry to all UK fans who only buy dvd, it’s just not on is it. Reminds me of Adventure in Space and Time, only blu ray release the UK got was in the 50th box set which is now expensive to get, while the US had an individual release. Then we have the nightmare of Underwater Menace only containing 2 actual episodes and 2 telesnap garbage. BBC Worldwide are making a lot of odd choices lately.

Buy both. As the DVD has a reverse cover, that will fit in nicely with the current classic series collection. Then buy the Blu-Ray, and just put that with any of your Blu-Ray collection, Doctor Who or not. That’s what I will do. For example, my ‘Spearhead from Space’ Blu-Ray is on the same shelf as James Bond ‘Casino Royale’ and the movie ‘Gravity’!

I have to say as much as I’m looking forward to this, not giving the UK fans the colour versions on the normal DVD is a bit of a disappointment.

I mean as someone whose living abroad here’s my situation if I want to see the colour one.

. Travel back to the UK to download the colour version on BBC Store
. Buy the blu-ray version which means it will be the only blu-ray DVD I own and thus fairly pointless
. Buy the American DVD release to have the colour version but I also have to buy a multi-regional DVD player in order to play it, again the only non-region 2 DVD I own.

To be honest I would have been perfectly happy to wait until 2018 if it meant also getting the colour version on the DVD release.

Great if you have a Bluray player (I don’t & I don’t want one either) just another cheap trick by the current market to force you to upgrade from DVD to Bluray. Saw through this con awhile back!

    • Phil

      November 3rd, 2016 - 9:36pm

Dear anonymous, I own a Blu-ray player and can tell you that ALL of your DVD collection will look significantly better played in a bluray player. Also Blu-ray discs look better than DVDS assuming you have an HD Television. And My 4k looks insanely awsome on the 4k television.

    • Gordon

      November 3rd, 2016 - 9:38pm

But If you want better p.q it’s worth upgrading. It’s no con.

    • Anonymous

      November 4th, 2016 - 12:27am

I think you missed the point. DVD is perfectly fine – Why should I then go out & purchase several hundred blurays again? They are constantly pushing the failed bluray line because most people refused to fork out again for the same discs or buy a bluray player. Let alone pay double the price for what a DVD costs (Which is more than expensive enough for what it is) The most recent con I’ve seen is where you just get either a vanilla DVD disc with just the film on or with a couple of Special Features. All the good stuff for Special Features is only released on the bluray. Talk about desperate to grasp a few more pennies & push their agenda.

    • Gordon

      November 4th, 2016 - 3:32am

Its not fine if the DVD is inferior to the blu Ray picture quality. If you want the best DVD is not perfectly fine! Blu rays are hardly double the cost of the DVDs. At most about 5 quid more maybe a bit more if it’s a box set. A lot of DVDs don’t get extras any more as the extras are recorded in hd.

    • Anonymous

      November 4th, 2016 - 7:26am

Good excuses for you but when I said DVD is fine, I meant DVD quality is fine for me. You’ve admitted bluray is more expensive & it’s hogwash that extras are recorded in hd. They just transfer them from the Special Edition, Gold, Platinum, Collector’s, Anniversary, Diamond, Ultimate or whatever rip-off edition they are selling on DVD (Another peeve) Do we really need 10 versions of the same DVD? It’s a purely marketing excercise to maximize as much dosh as possible. From what I’m reading plenty of other people aren’t happy either.

    • Gordon

      November 4th, 2016 - 8:44am

If its fine for you that’s ok. But not everyone settles for fine. Yes blu Ray is more expensive but it’s hardly double the price which you suggest. I’m referring to films that are made in 2016 that have its extras filmed in hd and not had any extras on the DVD not DVDs that have had multiple releases that you can get extras on them anyway. If you don’t want to upgrade to blu Ray that’s fine. Your not forced into buying any of the releases but why should people that want these blu Rays of these titles be deprived of these releases just because you think it’s a con and the DVD is fine? No they shouldn’t. If you want to just buy the DVD it’s ok. If you want the blu Ray it’s also fine. Isn’t having the option bliss?

    • Anonymous

      November 4th, 2016 - 12:02pm

Again, your missing the point. It’s a deliberate policy by the industry to get people buying the same product again. Don’t bother with the DVD folks buy this more expensive bluray version with all the features on. It’s not an option its is a con to extract further cash from buyers. It’s all about double-dipping & it’s incredibly tiresome. If they released both versions of DVD & bluray together with exactly the same product then fine but they don’t & there is a reason for that.

    • Gordon

      November 4th, 2016 - 12:42pm

if people want to buy more than 1 copy it’s their own choice. Nobody is being forced to buy it more than once. The reason is that it would never have been ready for the Christmas market if they waited till the colour version was done.
