Doctor Who 5.5″ Warriors of the Deep (1984) Set

Character Options announces its first online exclusive Doctor Who collector set of 2022

Warriors of the Deep (1984), a new 3-piece set offers a once only chance to collect these iconic Silurian figures

Character Options has today revealed the next instalment of Doctor Who collectors’ sets, available exclusively online on the Character Options website.

The new Warriors of the Deep (1984) set includes the Three Command Silurian crew of Ichthar, Tarpok and Scibus as seen in the season twenty-one episode of the same name. Perfect for all Doctor Who fans and collectors, the set comes beautifully displayed in a special presentation pack with diorama insert and Doctor Who heritage packaging. These figures will only ever be available this one time only, and offers the perfect opportunity for fans to add to their collections.

The Silurians

Psionosauropodomorpha, Homo Reptilia or more simply Silurians are a species of highly intelligent reptiles with psionic abilities who inhabited the planet Earth millions of years before humans. In order to outlive the catastrophe that destroyed the dinosaurs, they descended into underground hibernation shelters, but were never revived and now many pockets of survivors lie dormant within the planet. The Silurians have attempted to re-take the planet Earth on several occasions but have always been defeated by either human weapons or by the Doctor.

Setting the scene

In the Warriors of the Deep episode, we travel to Earth year 2084. Two power blocs control the planet. One of them has an underwater base called Sea Base 4 operating deep in the ocean and strategically positioned to control nuclear weapons aimed at its opponents.

Evading missile fire in space, the TARDIS lands on Sea Base 4 in the middle of a practice missile run. The TARDIS crew are soon detected and alarms are triggered whereupon the Doctor as a distraction programs the base’s reactor to overload in an attempt to avoid capture. This fails however, and the time travellers are detained.

We soon learn the Silurians have located and revived a group of Sea Devil Warriors from deep hibernation and together they attack the base. The Silurians dispatch the Myrka, a large marine creature, to break through the outer airlocks. After a fierce battle the Doctor surmising an aversion to bright light, kills it using a rigged up ultra-violet projector. The Silurians and Sea Devils take control of the base.

After much bloodshed, the Doctor confronts the Silurian Ichthar about the death toll whereupon the he scornfully reveals it’s irrelevant as his warriors intend to destroy mankind by triggering a global nuclear war. They connect a ‘manipulator’ to the computer systems and while distracted, the Doctor escapes and discovers cylinders of hexachromite gas, which is utterly lethal to all sea life.

Unable to find another option the gas is fed into the ventilation system. The Silurians and Sea Devil warriors collapse and the Doctor tries to stop the missiles by linking himself into the computer and succeeds.

Al Dewar, Character Options’ Creative Director, added his own personal thoughts on the release of this new exclusive and the episode from which they are created.

‘I think it’s safe to say that 1984’s story Warriors of the Deep brought back a much underused yet very fondly remembered Doctor Who foe .. The Silurian’s. I personally remember this story with great fondness; partly this was because from the start I was trying to guess who the protagonists were as the mysterious submarine closed in on the Sea Base. And then later because of the great rework of the original design for this Classic Monster.

The Silurian costume design is excellent and I think created quite a different look with the updated carapace body added. The Silurian’s in this story are like the Silurian’s and Sea Devils of old, they are not the baddies and neither are they alien. They are simply trying to survive and in the story it’s the humans who appear less than squeaky clean. Like many really good Doctor Who stories there are no winners at the end of Warriors…just survivors. It’s a really cracking adventure with the 5th Doctor with a kind of feeling of downbeat inevitability which I really like.

Three Silurians in the set might seem an odd choice but for me this Story is all about “Three” We have the three races, humans, Silurians and the Sea Devils. We have Ichthar, the last of the original Silurian Triad. The three Silurian characters themselves are the command crew of the ratty old sub and all we see of the once proud race. Obviously we have the Silurian’s own third eye though this time used as a speech unit and not as a psionic weapon. Therefore the set we’ve brought together works perfectly as we have two Silurians with the black unlit eye and the slight variation in body deco on these means they are all slightly different. I absolutely love this figure and think it’s one of the best we’ve done and a great addition to the Classic line up.”

I do get confused with the marketing for the Character exclusives. This set kept totally secret until it’s release on a mid morning in the mid week, why?
Nearly all collectable merchandise now is unveiled and then put out on pre order including many Dr Who products. This way seems to create the need better, more sites talking and more YouTube videos spreading the word. You may disagree and like the secrecy but there has to be a reason companies like Hasbro and Mattel do the opposite.

it might for items that find their way to retailers as well as online shops because they can do their own marketing from then on, that’s what often happens, but i think its great that an online exclusive is available to buy and actually in stock when announced, you gain the momentum and i guarantee you the vast majority of orders are placed within the first few days and that’s my point really is that promotion now seems aimed at people who would buy anyway and concentrated on one day, there is nothing beyond that.

I’ve also noticed the wider scifi sites and even some of the big Doctor Who news sites dont put on the press releases any more even though they were most likely sent it and i think i know why that is.

Do you think certain sites were miffed CO was sending out review sets and reaching out to Youtubers and not established sites, and therefore stopped running their PR releases?

Probably because of the shift in PR, the wider sci-fi sites don’t promote this stuff any more and CO have focused on core collectors which would most likely buy anyway.

They definitely made too many this set if there was only 3000 – 4000 sets would gone down but three of the same figure this should of been a b&m set

no way with the huge investment in new tooling for this would this have been viable as a B&M set

    • Jamie

      March 15th, 2022 - 3:23pm

Not sure I follow your logic. They made 6000 sets and now it’s almost sold out so why should they have made less? Not even mentioning the fact that making that many at that price would be what made it viable. I doubt it would ever work as a B&M set.

    • Nath

      March 15th, 2022 - 8:54pm

Was the whole figure completely new then? And it was 5000 sets just think they could of added the wash that people have been doing to them and I thought there was meant to be slight difference between them but can’t see one apart from the eye obviously

    • booboo

      March 16th, 2022 - 10:16am

Not all of it but substantially more than in any B&M set, and post is free, normally £4.99 at CO rates so effectively £25.

Its all about costs, compare action figures in other markets and these sets are well under priced in comparison.

    • JRT!

      March 21st, 2022 - 6:01am

£25? Wouldn’t that be more like £35 since this set costs 29.99? Or has it gone down in price? Or did you mean B&M sets? Just curious.

    • John

      March 21st, 2022 - 7:59am

JRT your maths is going the wrong way, free postage worth £5 on a £30 set makes it £25 for the set!!!

    • booboo

      March 21st, 2022 - 9:15am

yes and of course when comparing prices people assume the B&M sets will be the same price this year but with extra costs i can see them going up £2-3.

    • JRT!

      March 22nd, 2022 - 5:57am

But the set still costs 30 quid even with free postage, doesn’t it? You don’t really deduct the five quid from the set, right? Blimey,I need math lessons, lol!

    • booboo

      March 22nd, 2022 - 8:48am

what i mean is that the post is not free to character and they have to pay people to pack and send out as well the the “true cost” is more like £25 (and other £6 goes in Vat) so when you think about they are putting this set together for around £20

    • The 13th floor

      March 22nd, 2022 - 8:49am

You’re right, they over estimated the popularity of thses figures and the story, but the guy that commisions these figures picks and chooses them from his favourite stories, which is fair enough. Anyway, far more important things going on in this world to be concerned about.

    • JRT!

      March 23rd, 2022 - 5:26am

If I buy this set I actually do end up paying 30 quid for it. Which is fine of course, lol. And yes, lots of other things going on in the world, but not everyone is concerned about that, believe it or not. Guess it’s up to each individual what they want to be concerned about.

    • John

      March 23rd, 2022 - 2:42pm

Yes we’ve all paid £30 for a set, the point was Charecter AREN’T getting that because they have to take the cost of postage and packaging off.

    • JRT!

      March 24th, 2022 - 5:44am

Ok,got’cha. I thought you meant that was what we ended up paying, that I missed a code for five quid off or summat,lol.. My bad.

I do find it sad that a 3 figure pack of a classic monster has not sold out yet. Anyone who owns this knows that these are great figures, some parts are reuse but honestly you wouldn’t know.
Is it true the serious Dr Who figure collectors world wide are so few we don’t even number 5000.

    • booboo

      April 3rd, 2022 - 5:53pm

There were multiple factors as to why the Dalek and Tardis Sets sold out so quickly

There are other issues with this set at this time through no fault of its own, In my opinion PR has become far to focused and limited now as well.

Hope its sold well enough to ensure another set at least.

For US buyers, looks like WhoNA got in like 10 sets, of which there is 1 left as of now. For those who don’t want to risk a set being lost from being sent overseas, this is an option, though you will pay for WhoNA’s shipping it to the States.

I wouldn’t be too worried about shipments overseas from Character Options to the US, though. I received my Jungles Of Mechanus set in fine condition, even though it shipped from overseas to the US. Took a bit longer, so if you want to get it sooner and are willing to pay the premium for it, there is the one set left at WhoNA.

Mine just arrived today – on a Sunday !
Ordered on 15th Feb; posted on 18th Feb (the post stamp on the box confirms this); confirmation e-mail on 21st Feb; enquiry to Customer “Care” and very unhelpful response on 2nd March; follow up e-mail to Customer “Care” on 3rd March to which they said they would now resend using DPD; no subsequent delivery by DPD or notification e-mail in advance of delivery, which they tend to send; follow up e-mail to Customer “Care” this morning insisting that either they deliver it this week or send me a full refund; two hours later, delivery from Royal Mail – as I said, on a Sunday !
I don’t know why it took RM nearly a month to deliver this, but in future I shall resort to ebay, not my preferred choice, but it isn’t the delay that has lead to this decision but the attitude of the inappropriately named Customer Care.
Hopefully those of you still waiting will receive your orders any time soon !

Royal Mail doesn’t supply a tracking number unless you pay the extra money for international tracking. They were probably sent international standarfd. After Brexit and during the COVID pandemic Royal Mail tripled their prices from UK to USA. I used to send parcels to America every day and I stopped after the increases. The postage is more expensive than the item in most cases these days.

On Feb 21st, I got the email from Character saying that my two sets had been shipped. I’m in the U.S. so I wasn’t expecting them to get here immediately. But yesterday was 10 days, and I know some U.S. and Canadian customers were getting their sets, so I contacted CO to see if I could get the tracking number. I come to find out, that my sets were actually shipped on the 16th–which means they’ve been floating around five days longer than I thought. Also, they tell me they can’t provide a tracking number because it was sent by Royal Mail. I order from the UK all the time, have had many items shipped to be by Royal Mail, and have always gotten a tracking number. They also tell me to just call my post office and give my name and address in order to find the package. I don’t know if anyone has had the pleasure of dealing with the United States Postal Service, but I have, and I can assure you, that will not work. They, of course, need a tracking number. This package could theoretically be anywhere by now. My name and address won’t do them any good. It’s literally the reason tracking numbers exist. But for some reason, Character is refusing to give me that number. Has anyone else ever had this issue with them?

CO should be giving you the tracking number. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t. All Royal Mail parcels have a tracking/reference number especially if it’s being sent abroad. I don’t see why they would ask you to go to your Post Office in the vain hope they will find it for you when there isn’t a reference or tracking number. Go back to CO and state you cannot find it without that number. If they refuse ask them for a replacement as you have paid for goods that haven’t arrived and you don’t have what you need in order to even try and begin to track it down. If they don’t do that, if you paid by PayPal file for a refund for item and postage.

      March 5th, 2022 - 12:56pm

My sets actually arrived later in the day yesterday, so no harm ultimately done. But I’m still kind of amazed that I had to engage in an email back and forth with CO’s customer service just to get a tracking number, which I never actually got. To be clear, I wasn’t really annoyed that my sets hadn’t arrived yet. As a U.S. collector, I’m used to waiting longer. If I was able to track them and it turned out they were still a few days away, that would have been fine. I was annoyed because they seemed to be going out of their way to make sure I didn’t have that information. And it got to a point where I felt like I was having my intelligence insulted. Telling me that they can’t provide a tracking number because it was shipped by Royal Mail, and that all I have to do is call my post office and give them my name and address are both blatantly incorrect statements and they just expected me to accept them. And the person I was dealing with still never responded to my last email and the supervisor I forwarded the whole exchange to never responded. My wife contacted CO on Facebook and they haven’t responded to that. All they had to do was give me the tracking number when I first asked for it and they wouldn’t have heard another peep out of me. But, like I said, I did get my sets and I’m very happy with them.

Great your sets have arrived. The attitude and bad customer service of CO is not. I dealt with their customer service once and the representative was rude and unhelpful. So it could be the standard for their customer service. Hopefully someone from CO will read this and sort it out.

    • booboo

      March 5th, 2022 - 5:45pm

Never found them anything but extremely helpful and i have dealt with them a lot over the years.

Every comment I’ve seen on here says they were sent out by standard royal mail, not tracked, even overseas, so what they have been told you looks to be correct.

    • lister

      March 5th, 2022 - 11:01pm

If that’s true about standard Royal Mail, then fair enough. But that wasn’t how it was presented to me. The customer service rep I was dealing with didn’t make that distinction, They made it sound as though Royal Mail in general can’t be tracked. Which I know is not true. At best it was terrible communication on their part. But beyond that, telling me to call the post office was absurd. As it turned out, the package wasn’t actually lost. But if it had been, CO did exactly zero to help me find it.

      March 6th, 2022 - 12:26am

Ordered mine on the 15th of last month. Still waiting for delivery to Ohio. Usually, Canada drags their feet at customs..Starting to think this one will take more than a month. If it isn’t here by March 15th, I will start an investigative inquiry. Possibly have to go through Paypal for a refund. Really dislike the slow process. I don’t blame Character Options. It’s clearly a plot by the Daleks to irritate me. They think it’s tactically functional, and amusing, to thwart my package deliveries.

When figures are released I do like to watch the story they are from….oh lordy. I knew this story didn’t have the best reputation. I really like the design of the Silruians. The Sea Devils not so much – add in the pantomime cow eyes of the leader and their swaying walk and they begin to look rubbish. And hey, now we’re Samurais! Yay! But then comes the Myrka. The costume isn’t that terrible but it’s the direction and editing of the scene where it appears (have only made it to episode two) is dire! Everyone is static. The guns don’t have any visual sign they do anything. The music, which could have helped create some form of tension and terror suddenly goes off on holiday leaving behind a few feeble notes to do the job. And Tegan is trapped under some cardboard. Finally outer spacejump suits and a brush with Adam Ant’s blusher palette make this a very poor and very dated production. Still, good for a giggle.

Yes matt, I too saw most 70s and 80s classic era broadcast and enough to know when the bad stuff if about to show up. The worst stories you just have to focus on the positives and imagine what the production might have been like if they had a few extra quid and more time. Warriors isnt that bad a story as a base under siege but they seemed to linger on shots that maybe should have been edited out as they couldn,t retake with time and budget being against them. Who knew a rubberfoam bulkhead door could be so heavy?

Mine’s arrived about 8 days after order. I wouldn’t worry, that’s about 3500 orders they’ve had to ship in under 2 weeks, that’s a lot of labelling 🙂

Might be a long wait Tom. I’m guessing maybe Two online Exclusives a year (if we’re lucky) which might be Another 6 Months before the Next Exclusive is released.

My set arrived Monday, just 6 days after ordering it. A lovely set. Very impressed with this. I hope they continue to do Nu Who figures 2005 and beyond once RTD takes over.

Got the set today was nice not knowing what was going to be released but I’ve noticed they aren’t selling as well because people don’t seem to know it is an online only had a few people thinking it was a b&m set

I know I’m not sure why people think otherwise didn’t the tardis and dalek sets only have 5000 units too?

4000 Tardis and 5000 Dalek, however many many people bought multiple sets of the Daleks for Customs, that’s why it sold so quickly, i know people who bought at least 5 sets

Vast majority will be buying only one Silurian Set.

My set has arrived, and they’re wonderful. They also add a bit of frisson to the range, not knowing what might come next, enjoying the anticipation of more surprises.

Mine has arrived. Anyone else missing the grey line on the right arm. Not the communication thing on the two unlit head figures?

Everyone, from what I’ve seen so far. Not seen it in a single photo or review (I’m not actually even sure what it is, or if it’s intentional, to be honest with you).

My two unlit Silurians have the grey mark on the right arm. If yours are missing that maybe not all of them do? Or maybe a few just got missed? Not sure.

Perhaps the grey marks were the original mould colour before the orange went on. Mine doesn’t have them so I presume it’s a non painted area fault

These sort of sets are great but if they are to continue mauafacturing duo or triple packs in the future might i suggest with a few more added accessories to make them greater still. For example a terileptil trio pack they could add a rat in cage or the soliton gas device. I,d be happy to pay that little extra.

Funny you should mention that Soliton Gas Device, ergon. Maelstrom was asking for one along time ago on the Friends of Harrop site along with the Terileptil.
