BBC Studios announce Doctor Who: The Evil of the Daleks Animation, due for release on 27th September 2021.
BBC Studios have announced the new Doctor Who: Evil of the Daleks animation starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor and can reveal artwork alongside a sneak peak of what’s included in the release.
The announcement lands on the 53rd anniversary in which the last episode of the original version was aired. The new animated release will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and a Limited Edition Blu-ray Steelbook from 27th September 2021.
The Evil of the Daleks is the mostly-missing ninth and final serial of the fourth season of the British series Doctor Who, which originally aired in seven weekly parts from 20th May to 1st July 1967.
Following the success of the existing animations, The Evil of the Daleks fills another gap in the missing Doctor Who content lost in the purge of the BBC archive soon after the programme’s original transmission. However, audio-only recordings of all seven episodes have survived and have been used here to create a brand new fully animated presentation of this lost classic, featuring the original surviving second episode.
The Doctor (Patrick Troughton) stars alongside his travel companion Jamie (Frazer Hines) in this recreation in which the TARDIS has been stolen. The story unfolds as the Doctor and Jamie set out to find the missing time machine, bringing them face to face with a very old enemy – the Daleks, who have a new masterplan to conquer the universe. The Daleks force the Doctor to help them on their quest to ‘humanise’ themselves into deadlier living weapons. This particular story is notable for introducing the Doctor’s new companion Victoria Waterfield (Deborah Watling), first seen in the surviving second episode, and also for presenting the Dalek Emperor.
The three disc release gives fans the opportunity to enjoy The Evil of the Daleks, available in either colour or black and white.
The release will include:
- Remastered Surviving Original Episode 2
- Telesnap Reconstructions – 6 episodes
- Audio Commentaries
- Audiobook, with recorded commentary by Tom Baker
- Making Of
- Photo Gallery

July 2nd, 2021 - 9:00pmThe steel book artwork cover is much better than the DVD and Blu ray covers which is poor.
Ian Cotterill
July 2nd, 2021 - 9:23pmAgreed. The Steelbook cover is so much better.

July 3rd, 2021 - 8:25amIt feels like the same could be said for web of fear in reverse. I much prefer the dvd cover for that.
Anonymous
July 10th, 2021 - 3:36pmThe DVD covers are a bit predictable now. It’s exactly the same thing on every cover.
I don’t know why they don’t do art more like the regular Classic DVDs of old, just with the animated elements?

July 2nd, 2021 - 2:17pmI am really looking forward to this wouldn’t it be great if they could animate the audio adventures I would buy them in an instant I can always dream though
Auton
July 2nd, 2021 - 3:41pmI hope so too but I think they should animate the missing episodes first
Anonymous
July 3rd, 2021 - 8:27amPersonally, id rather somthing new and somthing old each year. Animate a lost story and animate an audio preferably paul mcgann for obvious reasons

July 3rd, 2021 - 12:57pmBig finish is a seperate commercial company from the bbc. They can’t animate and release audio stories made by big finish for copyright and bbc charter reasons
Kingdiamond887
July 4th, 2021 - 7:03pmBut big finish have a animation team they did fury from deep maybe they could do it it be nice Paul mcgann get some story done
Gordon
July 4th, 2021 - 8:54pmBig finish (the audio company) and big finish creative (the animation company) are run independently of each other as far as I’m aware. The only real crossover is that Jason Haigh-Ellery owns both of them
Kingdiamond887
July 6th, 2021 - 12:12amOh thank for correcting me but would it be less complicated of rights of doctor who audio for them to do it instead of bbc or I’m just dreaming to big
Chris Howarth
July 6th, 2021 - 9:38amThe audio adventures wouldn’t necessarily benefit from transferring to a visual medium. They’re written to be exposition heavy with plenty of descriptors in the dialogue. For example you might get McGann saying “Look a door!” when there’s clearly a door on screen.

July 7th, 2021 - 10:24amAll you need to do is cut the odd line out. Hell, the actors are still doing Big Finish, get them to rerecord lines.
Anonymous
July 7th, 2021 - 9:12pmThey are seperate companies. BBC won’t animate a private commercial companies output. The charter won’t allow it as it would be essentially advertising for big finish.

July 1st, 2021 - 10:22pmThis story is the icing on the cake!! Lots and lots of fans looking forward to this.

July 1st, 2021 - 9:25pmIs the surviving footage going to be included which includes the surviving modal effects?

July 2nd, 2021 - 1:39pmWhat’s modal effects?

July 2nd, 2021 - 4:56pmTheirs some old black and white footage of loads of Daleks in battle, being destroyed as the sets and Dalek Emperor are also blown up. But rather than looking like the actual props they look like models were used instead.
Wonder if it’s this they mean?
The Flying Shark
July 2nd, 2021 - 7:15pmThat footage has been included on a number of releases now, I know it would be nice for completeness’ sake for it to be on this but it doesn’t exactly need another copy, and regardless I should imagine it will accompany the story on the inevitable Collection box set.

July 2nd, 2021 - 7:24pmOH yeah, that makes sense.
Auton
July 2nd, 2021 - 8:46pmYea that’s what I meant, I think it was included on the tomb of the cybermen special edition dvd release
Gordon
July 2nd, 2021 - 8:49pmI’m sure the footage will be on the recon be used on the making of as well as the option to watch it on its own. It’s not like it takes up a massive amount of space. If you look at power macra faceless and fury they all included the surviving footage from each story
Anonymous
July 3rd, 2021 - 12:58pmAll existing footage will be included the reconstruction. It always is.
Anonymous
July 4th, 2021 - 11:44pmYeah, how many times has the “Final End” footage been released, in whatever form?
The Tomb of the Cybermen
The Seeds of Death
Lost in Time
Resurrection of the Daleks Special Edition
The Tomb of the Cybermen Special Edition
Any I’m forgetting?

July 6th, 2021 - 7:14amEven though it’s been released a lot of times it’s supposed to be from this story so should be on this story. If it’s missing from this release I expect it to be on the season 4 blu-Ray collection box set

July 1st, 2021 - 9:23pmI really hope Episode 1 has the option of being able to watch it with the repeat broadcast introduction with The Doctor introducing the story to Zoe… Fingers crossed!

July 1st, 2021 - 9:07pmI’ve got mine on preorder now. I’ve ordered the steelbook version on the grounds that it has the better cover.

July 1st, 2021 - 8:57pmThis is marvellous. Think it’s safe to say that loads of us have been waiting for this story for quite some time.
Most ambitious animation they’ve done yet as well as it’s 7 episodes rather than 6 or 4. Will absolutely be picking this up.

July 2nd, 2021 - 5:41pmDaleks’ Master Plan is absolutely not happening in 2023. Far too expensive and far too time intensive.
Gordon
July 3rd, 2021 - 8:58amUnless they are working on it now I doubt it will be out in time for the 60th anniversary. It’s a 2 year job minimum
daz
July 3rd, 2021 - 10:47pmI think we’ll get Master plan eventually. The final missing Dalek story that would no doubt sell. Could be a 2025 release for it’s 60th Anniversary.

July 7th, 2021 - 10:30amIt all depends really. Gary Russell (I think it was him anyway) confirmed that the budget is increasing early last year. There are also differences with what each of the teams are capable of. Ann Marie Walsh said Highlanders is extremely unlikely for BBC Studios “because of all the tartan.” Gary Russell said Big Finish Creative could do it, no problem. If the BBC pay for twice the amount of personnel working on Master Plan, maybe it could be done in 2023? That is the 60th Anniversary year, after all.

July 1st, 2021 - 7:04pmLooking at lost in time disc 2 is almost useless now. The surviving clips of the highlanders and a 30 second Easter egg of underwater menace is the only things not ported over yet

July 1st, 2021 - 7:47pmNo clue why they didn’t just include that Frazer Hines introduction on the 2015 DVD.
Gordon
July 1st, 2021 - 9:02pmProbably as the people in charge at the time bafflingly wanted the release as basic as possible

July 1st, 2021 - 10:29pmAnd the Restoration Team were willing to create a Web 3 style recon for no extra cost. That was declined. What a stupid decision. And it wouldn’t have cost them anything.

July 2nd, 2021 - 8:20amAnon: a full reconstruction seemingly costs the same to clear as an episode, reading between the lines re. The Tenth Planet VHS. Audio plus a few telesnaps is likely cheaper and saved BBCWW a few quid on royalties. They really didn’t want to release that disc, so cut as many corners as possible, watching every pound. Movement equalled more money for the actors I would assume.

July 1st, 2021 - 7:01pmI like how they’re choosing anniversaries for announcements/release dates.
If the rumours (i.e. the Mirror) are true about the Abominable Snowmen are true, then maybe an announcement on September 30th (54th anniversary of the broadcast of episode 1) could be predicted?…

July 1st, 2021 - 6:45pmWas out today so missed the announcement. Happy to hear it finally confirmed after all the rumours. It’s an instant purchase. Ordered both the dvd and steelbook. Think this adds weight to the rumour of abominable to be also getting animated seeing as they were both rumoured at the same time from the same source. Nice to see it getting a making of and also Peter Crocker has confirmed episode 2 will be getting a brand new restoration. I might need to double check totals but I think we are down to 63 episodes unanimated on dvd/blu ray

July 1st, 2021 - 8:26pmSorry 61 episodes

July 3rd, 2021 - 1:01pmI know just 61 left! I have to admit I don’t really consider the episodes ‘missing’ after they’ve been animated. Cue angry shouting!

July 3rd, 2021 - 8:45pm*shouts angrily* lol. While I would love for the original episodes to be found, Im usually content with the animations. Only Fury’s animation really disappoints me.

July 1st, 2021 - 5:59pmNearly a week when I didn’t have anything who related on pre order. This has sorted that out. One of the retailers should offer a subscription, there’s so many of us completists out there. I’d sign up especially for the collection box sets.

July 1st, 2021 - 8:23pmI quite agree, I was starting to feel a little lost without a couple of pre orders in the bag and “waiting” (I do have Web steelbook on order) Loving all of the animations – I sincerely hope everything that is currently missing from the archives gets the animation treatment eventually

July 2nd, 2021 - 3:31amYes. Good its in colour. Anonymous, They didnt do colour for the Special Edition Power of the Daleks.
Anonymous
July 20th, 2021 - 2:22amBecause that was an update of the 2016 release. At that time, nobody would think for the animations to be done in colour, then towards the end of production on the B/W version, BBC America at the last minute decided they wanted a colour version, so a Canadian company were hired to take a draft of the B/W version and add colour filters to each layer. It didn’t look very good. For the most part. It was after that decision that BBC Studios decided to make each animation in colour first, then convert it to black and white. That’s now the standard, and the reason why the colour version wasn’t included on the Power SE DVD was because the BBC Studios team had nothing to do with it and they didn’t like it. They didn’t make the animation bearing a colour version in mind.
Why they didn’t make a colour version of the Special Edition? Well, most of it was lifted directly from the 2016 version and all the character assets were built in black and white.
The colour animations are commonplace now, so no, they’re not exactly news. The formula now is to make it in colour first, then add a B/W option, and that’s what they’ll certainly do for all the rest. Even the ones not funded by BBC America, if Web of Fear is anything to go by. Power of the Daleks Special Edition was an exception because it was based on the very first BBC Studios animation, which wasn’t initially made in colour.

July 1st, 2021 - 4:42pmThat is my most wanted of all the hartnell stories phillip. I,d like them to do the celestial toymaker and if possble include a jackie lane memoriam as a mark of respect to the late actress.

July 1st, 2021 - 5:18pmI’ve been wanting this forever. The last episode when Sara dies is harrowing.
This is the zenith of 60s Who.
the ergon
July 1st, 2021 - 7:12pmShould we care so much about Saras fate though, I mean she callously kills her brother Brett vyon (though i suppose we could be ambivalent towards Bretts character) and in a space of one episode shes a fully integrated member of the TARDIS team. That time destructor really did mess with their minds, The doctor and steven never thought to look back or question what happened to Brett and sara certainly wasn,t saying anything.

July 1st, 2021 - 7:51pmErgon, rumour has it that Galaxy 4 Episode 4 and Celestial Toymaker Episode 3 are the two Hartnell episodes Paul Vanezis talked about. If Galaxy 4’s animated DVD release also includes an existing Episode 4, that could be an indicator Celestial Toymaker will follow.
And Celestial Toymaker could be pretty easy. Only a handful of cast members and the sets should be simple.

July 1st, 2021 - 3:43pmI’m still holding out on buying these animated recreations. Eventually they will be released in the collection seasons and I don’t need duplicates. I can wait.
Rory
July 1st, 2021 - 5:26pmI can’t wait. I’ll buy them all and enjoy getting to see a story I never got to see due to not being born.
I’ll still buy the boxsets, because there’s content I want to see, but I ain’t waiting six years until I can watch an animated episode
D84
July 1st, 2021 - 5:34pmI’m in the same mind as Rory, I’ll buy this now and then re buy it if/when it comes as part of “The Collection – Season Four” I have all of the other animations on BluRay steel book too so they are kind of a set in their own right (I have also had all the VHS and DVD’s prior to the move to Blu Ray)
Chris Howarth
July 1st, 2021 - 5:46pmThat’s OK. But the way I look at it, if these episodes weren’t animated they wouldn’t be available for the Season sets. If fans don’t support the animations they will stop being made, so nothing for the box sets but audios and telesnaps.
Coleman
July 1st, 2021 - 9:40pmVery good point Chris. I know a few people are not buying these animations at the moment because there waiting for them to be eventually put on the the Collection sets.
(But, and it’s a very big but). If everyone felt like this and decided not to support the animations from the start, the BBC would simply stop making them so they wouldn’t be able to be put them on the collections eventually. Seasons one to six on Blu-ray would be full of audios and telesnaps.
D84
July 1st, 2021 - 10:40pmVery good point Coleman, very good point indeed
Gordon
July 1st, 2021 - 10:49pmworth noting there is no guarantee that absolutely everything will be ported over from the stand alone release. Also with things like the making of and commentary being covered it frees them up to focus other extras when the time comes for season 4 of the collection
daz
July 2nd, 2021 - 12:33amGordon. I only expect them to put the B&W versions of the animations on the Collection sets along with Telesnaps and found episodes.
Rest of space will be for the features old and new.
Kevin Megannety
July 2nd, 2021 - 9:34amMy goal with Dr Who is not to collect it all but just to get every season in the best quality I can get it whilst avoiding duplicates. Buying the classic seasons in the collection range and the modern run in steelbook will satisfy this desire. I don’t discourage anyone from buying these recreations standalone Its just what I am personally doing. One day I hope I can watch from an Unearthly Child to the most recent episode without any gaps. I also don’t have a Doctor I dislike. Each is great in their own way and I find the hate against Jodie to be unfounded. It’s a Sci-Fi show people of course things are going to be slightly progressive at least. Star Trek had a diverse cast in the 60s for crying out loud. Galifrey is not Earth, its culture is different, why would they act like us? It only seems natural that regeneration can change your gender as well. If you can race bend a character like Nick Fury or Jim Gordon why not change the Doctors gender?
