I’m watching disc 4 (Colony in Space) and there’s a constant flickering black line at the bottom of the screen all the way through. Is this the same for everyone or is there an error with my disc?

I think it’s a by product of the remastering. You could turn on the ‘Overscan’ feature on your TV (if it has one, this will slightly zoom the picture but it could also cause some other minor picture problems…

    • Ricky

      March 14th, 2021 - 12:27pm

16:9 overscan is there for exactly this purpose, in the old days of glass CRT tvs they overscanned automatically to blank out these picture anomalies, but with flat panels they display a full direct picture as most modern productions are edge to edge perfect.
You wont notice any problems using it for this type of material.

I received mine late but this was due to a reduced postal service due to the pandemic. May be worth checking with the post office. I was told by zoom when I questioned the late arrival and was told the set was sent Royal Mail 1st class and allow 1-2 days for delivery.

Claws of Axos is exactly 50 years old today!! Would be a good day to watch from this set! IMO the 2nd best story of the season behind Daemons which will soon be 50 years old itself!!

    • Bobby Fackrell

      March 13th, 2021 - 2:19pm

No it’s definitely clips, they don’t watch the whole things

Two reasons, they describe the feature as cast members watch clips

Also there are bits of the stories they clearly do not see for example Kinda they ask where Nyssa is and she is in one of the first scenes

Finally there is no way they would sit there and watch about 28 episodes in a row they would have to get paid a lot for that and I doubt it is in the budget

    • IntoDarkness

      March 13th, 2021 - 3:32pm

Yes, that’s what made me think. It’s a lot to watch if they’re doing it all.

    • the ergon

      March 13th, 2021 - 5:52pm

I didn,t actually think they watched all the stories on a straight through back to back bingewatch. I just thought they were booked in to view on different dates.

    • the ergon

      March 13th, 2021 - 9:35pm

Now i,ve actually ‘read’ the booklet it does indeed say they do only watch the high/lowlights which has left me slightly deflated, disappointed and feeling rather sheepish. I tend to skip over the booklet contents, check the titles and just tuck into it. Even so It does seem a little pointless summing up how much they enjoyed/didn,t think much of that as a story if they didn,t get to see it in its entirety. In my naivety I won,t beable to watch a ‘Behind the Sofa’ featurette in the same way again now.

I have been in touch with the MD of Steelbook Central, as I was wondering if they had anything in their product lineup that we could buy to protect our collection boxsets on our shelves, like we do our steelbook seasons.

He asked me for the dimensions of the boxsets, and as the height and width are the same, and it’s only the depth that changes depending on the number of discs that are in the boxset, he said they would need to make 3 sizes (for the ones with 6,7 or 8 discs) with a minimum order of 5000 for each.

So I was just wondering if anyone on here would be interested in buying a protective cover/sleeve for their collection boxsets, as if he sees that there is a lot of interest, then they might then go into production for sale.

Really hope so. Do let’s us know if any success. I’d really like some protection for the boxsets, especially since I’ve noticed the backing card starts to fade overtime to a more yellow grey, really stands out. Not sure if this because I watch them alot, but the that’s the sole purpose. But Im always very careful with them in my cabinet and started giving them slight gaps, so protectors would be great.

If the compression on the DVDs bothers you then you might be pleased with the BD. Don’t expect Who treatment though – it’s just a basic regrade and a zoom of the picture to remove the varying analogue blanking bars on the sides (lazy zooming being something that they avoid on the Who sets). Very much a bargain basement job in a lot of ways, with the extras from the OOP Bodysnatcher set probably the deciding factor if you don’t already have them. Don’t pay more than £35ish though.

Much as I like the character of Tegan all Janet does on the commentaries is remark on fashion and slag off men as being chauvenists !

    • Bobby Fackrell

      March 11th, 2021 - 11:16pm

As an Equalist myself, we still have a long way to go but there’s no point watching a program that is 40 years old and preaching feminism when it is clearly a product of its time.

Her view of female characters in the show’s history is misguided anyway. What about Barbara one of the very first characters, less so a companion more a joint lead in many ways. Vicki was a excellent character, there have been countless examples of strong female companions; Zoe, Liz, Sarah Jane, Romania, Ace! .

I personally didn’t like Tegan, she was a poorly conceived creation to appeal to Australian audiences who spent most of her time moaning . It’s just infuriating; Doctor Who’s fundamental message is equality, the Doctor looks beyond race and gender and teaches others to do the same. Older shows are occasionally of their time but it is still one of the positive shows the BBC ever created and the first producer was a young woman

I tend to agree, I think her views are clear now on the other seasons. Would love to see her on S20 and S23 but I think I’d like to see another partnership instead just to hear other views especially from classic companions

    • Ricky

      March 12th, 2021 - 10:35am

I do enjoy alot of the extras, but of course buy the sets for the stories mainly. I can see the appeal of the behind the sofas, but i find when Fielding is taking part she spoils them for me, opinionated, slightly disrespectful and likes the sound of her own voice far more than i do. Just wish they wouldnt keep asking her back, just limit her to her stories.

    • bryan

      March 12th, 2021 - 2:39pm

For those Shouting down janet Fielding, it might be more appropriate to remember, what they get to see is not what we get to see. The behind the sofa is Entertainment in itself, and therefore there/may be prompts, suggestions.

personally I have enjoyed the first three BHTS on this set , specially Sacha and Anji, Katy and stewart and then Sarah and Janet. All have had something to say,and they are commenting on season 8 , not DW as a whole.

The PDFs on this set are superb. many unseen before item, and even updates to previous files. wonderful stuff.

      March 12th, 2021 - 3:49pm

How do you access the PDF’s on the sets? Do you have to put the discs in your computer? Or is there a way to access them through a bluray player?

    • Ricky

      March 12th, 2021 - 4:11pm

You’ll need a bluray drive on your computer.

    • Prof Horner

      March 12th, 2021 - 4:22pm

Well Bobby I agree with you on Tegan, but at least she is a genuine Aussie and not someone pretending to be. One of the few failures of the Hinchcllife years was many of the stories did not feature any female characters at all.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      March 12th, 2021 - 5:31pm

It’s a subject for debate to be clear I have nothing against Janet herself, she is still a member of the Who Family so respect and love to her it’s just a lot of her views I disagree with. I think we all have a responsibility to call out sexism and all forms of inequality and discrimination regardless of our gender but I question where she is looking at times and I do defend producers and writers of other eras if I feel there is an injustice in some of her claims.
Great point Prof Horner on the Hinchcliffe years, and quite hard to defend that statement, I would argue that Sarah Jane Smith was very well written however and subsequently one of the most popular companions in the show’s history and the creation of Leela was a clear attempt to write a strong and different type of companion. As an amateur writer myself the trick is always not how many female characters you have but how well they are represented. Also context of the story, take Mind of Evil, it’s set in a male prison so it’s going to be male dominated bit like The Shawshank Redemption. Still we have a female Doctor now and personally I think she’s great

    • Bobby Fackrell

      March 12th, 2021 - 5:50pm

On another set I think 20? There was a convention archive where Janet said she sat on a panel with a number of past female companions and criticised that every single one of them said their character was not like that (screamy and daft etc) and she made that sound ironic. I agree with what they are saying though, Romana was a much stronger character than Peri for example and Mary Tamm and Lalla Ward came before Nicola Bryant. It is a similar situation with Bond women, every film they say this Bond women is not like the rest before. But I would argue that the new Bond films are actually more sexist than they ever were, with the exception of brilliant Eva Green in Casino Royale a lot of the female leads in the new films sleep with Bond and get killed shortly after, in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s they had characters and backstory’s
Doctor Who and James Bond are both fascinating examples of TV and film evolution

I’m only really interested in the Pertwee/TBaker years and did consider trying to go back and get S10/12/14 etc, but then I just decided to save my money and picked up most of those eras on dvd (got the the three Revisitations, KeyOfTime, DalekWar, Myths&Legends, BeneathTheSurface, E-Space boxsets and a load of individual releases, Spearhead and Shada on Blu-ray also) from Zoom since November. I deliberately didn’t buy any of Season 11,13 & 15 so they’ll probably be the only other Collection boxsets I’ll be after, hope they’re not too far down on the release list. Funny because I had no idea Zoom was folding at the time, and got the lot real cheap.

    Hello

My Season 8 arrived with some small imperfections and I told Amazon and they gave me a partial refund of almost £10 so I got the set with a small dent and misaligned disc tray for about £34. Just a heads up if anyone else wants to try this. If you have a booklet problem for example they will give you that refund. Definitely worth that price, I’m happy with that so I will happily keep my set.

Apologies if this was posted before, but Dr Who discs did rather well last year, the Collection BDs and animations being singled out in the industry report:

“…combined sales across all (Who) content came in at £4.9m, a 15 per cent year-on-year growth from 2019.” They state total TV on disc revenue was £80m+, so Who makes up a decent percentage of that.

I’m in Australia where ordering through Zavvi is unfortunately the only way to get the superior UK editions of the sets, other than at inflated prices on eBay. Anyway, my copy hasn’t arrived yet, nor have the copies friends of mine have ordered. However, Zavvi did send us all dispatch notifications five days ago, which was promising as usually they are a week or two later than everybody else. Now we just have to wait and hope the sets aren’t too badly damaged, which is often the case with Zavvi.

I got a dispatch email five days ago, but from my experience Zavvi take longer than other companies to send the Collection sets.

      @ Tegan’s distant cousin

I’m in New Zealand and in the same situation as you. I got all the Collection sets from 12 to 23 from Amazon, but then they stopped shipping to NZ. So now Zavvi is my only option to get the UK sets for a normal price. With 26 and 14, it took about 3-4 weeks for my sets to arrive. They sent them in boxes but luckily neither of them were damaged.

Hope you guys get yours soon! Am really looking forward to it.

      @ SilentNinjaZero

It looks like both our countries had the double whammy of Amazon UK not delivering to us anymore and the local distributor changing the packaging for the local release. Most of my friends have had better luck than me with Zavvi, but I’ve had such a bad run with stuff arriving damaged. I usually cancel my Zavvi order and go with somebody on eBay, but I wasn’t able to do so in time for this set. Oh well. Fingers crossed. I’m stuck with a fairly battered copy of season 14 that I was only able to get from Zavvi, but it looks okay on the shelf so I’ve made peace with it!

I think 4 is what they always aim for but each time there have just been problems. 10 would be far too much, I mean wouldn’t be able to afford to spend that much on Who within a year, maybe 10 would be fine if these boxsets weren’t so limited.

I mean jokingly I’d like them all now if I had a toilet, however, I would like them to continue doing them beautifully as they are

Excellent Choices think you could be spot on with most of these!
I know they won’t have been painted yet but I want to see all these covers – NOW!
It was such a long gap between Season Fourteen and Season Eight I wish they could speed up the releases and at least give us four this year!
And I agree with Auton, I think Season Sixteen will be next after Season Twenty Four.

4 out of the 6 cybermen are in the 60s so we probably won’t see those for sometime. Eventually we will get a Dalek story but I still think season 16 is next after season 24

    • Bobby Fackrell

      March 9th, 2021 - 2:45pm

Yeah but we’ve got Genesis and Earthshock, I mean you can’t argue with that!

Also if the rumours are are true there’s is an animated Evil of the Daleks to look forward to this year!

    • DPHill

      March 9th, 2021 - 5:09pm

We did just receive a master-ful set though didn’t we??

      Daleks – Sn 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, (10,) 11, (12,) 17, 21, 22, 25
      Cybermen – Sn 4, 5, 6, (12, 19,) 20, 22, 25
      Neither – 7, 13, (14,) 15, 16, (18, 23, 24, 26)

      Overall that’s – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 17, 20, 21, 22, 25
13/17 sets so we are definitely going to get some (a lot) soon – my thoughts are that some of the less iconic seasons and monster combinations before releasing the rest which will all have some form of iconic sting to get hyped and searches…

    • Jay John

      March 9th, 2021 - 6:01pm

I mean, The Master has been in every set except the first and the last one announced.

      No Master – 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,11,(12),13,15,16,17,(24),25
      Master – (8),9,(10),(14),(18),(19),20,21,22,(23),(26),TVM

      Any suggestions or alterations?

    • Coleman

      March 9th, 2021 - 6:59pm

Definitely Michael Grade for one of the villains.

    • the ergon

      March 9th, 2021 - 9:01pm

Do you think they should have Michael Grade in the WY set and include the Room 101 appearance where he literally rubbishes all things Who and the fans all in one go and with Paul Merton playing devils advocate. On second thoughts would Who fans want this sort of negativity in there.

    • Auton

      March 9th, 2021 - 9:41pm

Personally I would like everything doctor who related to be included so that will have to include the room 101. It doesn’t really matter what Grade thinks because in the end doctor who came back so he lost his anti doctor who crusade as it returned on screens

    • the ergon

      March 10th, 2021 - 10:25am

And he admitted to admiring it more now but still had to have the last word by saying he still wasn,t a fan. Well he doesn,t like sci-fi full stop, he even says that. Merton is another who sits in the anti- Doctor Who camp.

    • Coleman

      March 10th, 2021 - 11:09am

Yes ergon, I remember reading that about Grade admiring Nu Who, mainly because of much improved effects, bigger budget etc then says but im still not a fan though. Don’t think he likes Sci_ fi at all, not even StarWars. What?

i was right on two of the items that the doctor would hold
that being pertwee with the transdimensional circuit and mccoy with the spoons, anyone got any ideas or agree with the following?

1 – Hartnell with hat, scarf, cloak and holding his walking stick
2 – Hartnell with both hands by his lapels with his monacle
3 – Hartnell with the terranium core
4 – Troughton with his recorder and 500 year diary
5 – Troughton in his yeti coat holding a locus yeti figurine
6 – Troughton with his sonic
7 – Pertwee in red lined black cape doing big funny hands
9 – Pertwee in black cape with orange velvet holding either the ageddor spinny mirror… or the torch from the mutants
11 – Pertwee in blue velvet with the metebelis three crystal
13 – Tom in Scottish gear holding the TARDIS key spade variation
15 – Tom in his normal slim grey outfit holding jelly babies or bag of them
16 – Tom in his flare lapel grey outfit with the wig and the key to time locator
17 – Tom in his brown coat normal costume holding K9 dog whistle
20 – Davison in normal holding the seal of the council
21 – Davison in his normal outfit but muddied and holding bats milk
22 – Colin in his normal with the blue overcloak and holding the sonic lance

Some great ideas there but with regards to fifth we need one of him in Harlequin outfit holding mask and theres the Doctor/Omega in Omegas Outfit, In cricketing jumper with sword, In Base outfit from Warriors, in holiday shirt and braces/specs and trion data core and hooded in Death under the red cloth execution from caves.

Love some of those Ideas DPHILL.

The Ergon : We have had season 19, holding Adrics` Gold Star , so Harlequinn outfit is off Limits now.

Oh for a 60s Set. It wont be a Hartnell anytime soon, with something missing from each series.(I cant see split season, it might sound a lot 44 eppisodes. Even with Animation, they could fit 2 to a disc as there is going to be so little New Extras. Although the wealth of material we do have , will take some fitting on as well as Episodes.

Sorry. Wrong page, thought we were discussing figurine outfits and poses not Bluray cover releases. Those all by DP hill are all ideal choices for there respective seasons.

    • TheWHOlegacy

      March 9th, 2021 - 1:13pm

The wilderness years set hasn’t been confirmed, but the mcgann movie was being discussed as going onto season 26 but in the end didn’t. So this points towards a seperate release. Plus we have things like Scream of the Shakespeare, 30 years, curse of the fatal death, doctor who night, search out science, doctor who @ 40. All will need somewhere to go and a wildernesses years set makes the most sense

    • Coleman

Prowl101 – loved the video! I love how a lot of doctor who fans have similar ideas on what should be!!

Regarding the WY set, i recall there being several things – as with the exclusion of mcgann from 26 – pointing towards it.

Gordon has released a wonderful set of disc-by-disc precdictions as to what they could do on page 2 of sn14 blu ray discussion

I have a feeling we may be lucky with releases this time round – here’s to Seasons 16, 24, and 20…!

    • the ergon

      March 9th, 2021 - 9:16pm

I would think do 17 then 15 before 16. It was a much more sought after release when it was on limited release and sold out. 16 and then 13 last for Tom.

    • Auton

      March 9th, 2021 - 9:53pm

I would love Season 17 to be next as it’s one of my favourites but I’m still sticking with season 16 as the next one. Season 15 is most definitely not next due to the fact season 14 had Leela in it but who knows, so its probably either 16 or 17. I really want a Mary Tamm tribute so that’s why 16 will hopefully be next

    • Prowl 1701

      March 10th, 2021 - 2:40am

I suspect they want to wait and do some Paris location filming for city of death VAM, so season 17 will be later I think.

    • the ergon

      March 10th, 2021 - 1:47pm

You are most probably right Auton and Prowl 1701, but 16 is just one of the two Tom seasons I,d prefer to save till last in the same way i,d like 11 to be last for Jon. We haven,t had Marys only season and i cant see another Leela or Romana 2 so soon after 14 and 18.

Hi, just finished Terror of the Autons. Does anyone else have an issue with the tracking shots in the filmed parts of the episodes? The picture is very blurred. It starts in the first opening circus scenes of episode 1 and continues right thru to episode 4.

    • Nick

      March 9th, 2021 - 9:18am

Unfortunately I think that is down to the age and nature of the film. Considering for years this was just a black and white film recording, taken from the original, it’s amazing it looks as good as it does. Who knows, with technology in years to come… these blemishes may hopefully be rectified. The fade out of the colour towards the side of the filmed sequences is really obvious now. But at least we have it. And we now have a brilliant end to the story, giving it the true climax it needed. Bring on season 11!

I like to disclaimer statement on the back of the J-card…

“The content of this release reflects the broadcast standards, language and attitudes of its time. Some viewers may find the content offensive.”

Great to see this, rather than trying to edit and mask parts of the program out from the original transmission.

(Off topic: hopefully Warners Archive Collection can add something like this to be able to get agreement from the lawyers to finally release “Tom and Jerry Golden Collection Volume 2” blu ray uncut!)
