Wilderness Years isn’t a “Season”. He said “27 Season Sets”. Which probably means 27 sets that look like these sets.

The previous sets were given official U.S releases so perhaps that’s why.

      November 29th, 2020 - 1:09am

The BFI website won’t allow international ordering of their recent Play for Today set due to rights restrictions, so the BBC do seem to be becoming stricter concerning territory rights lately. I’ve never known them block general online retailers though, so that would be something new – if they are even legally able to do that? I’m not sure what the current laws are, but they apparently changed around 2015/16 so maybe they can now.

Katy Manning is looking more and more like the only option left–I bit the bullet on that a couple days ago. $120 including shipping isn’t complete highway robbery, especially with a lovely signature.

    • The Loiterer

      November 29th, 2020 - 12:37am

For anyone who doesn’t want to risk waiting until release date (when Amazon will probably allow US delivery), there’s a whole new industry of parcel forwarding companies out there now. A lot of people in Europe use them to buy bargains from the US, as places like B&N won’t ship to the EU now (GDPR issues), but many of these companies ship both ways. If you look on the forums at somewhere like blu-ray.com you should find recommendations, assuming you don’t have a trading partner who can help you out.

If you look at the pack shots of the other series, all of them appear like this, although none of them have had the fold on the front. I don’t see any reason for it to be different this time around.

Bicky, with the crease being on the front of the original packaging, I should imagine this is how they where going to be produced.

Don’t think so, right from the beginning these sets were marketed as Limited Edition only.

    • Bob

      November 26th, 2020 - 12:40pm

The US releases aren’t limited edition and are region free so those are also an option. The differences are that they come in standard Blu-Ray cases, no booklet, all disc art is the same and some of the special features are missing due to licensing but the remasters are the same.

    • joey

      November 26th, 2020 - 1:07pm

Presumably, yes. The UK sets are described as coming in “limited edition packaging”.

    • Coleman

      November 26th, 2020 - 2:51pm

It’s just the packaging that’s “limited Edition”
So eventually I think they’ll release them all again, In standard cases.
      (Could be awhile though)

    • Richard Turner

      November 26th, 2020 - 3:40pm

99% yes. Once the range is done they won’t have money sitting on the shelf not making them money. Expect repackages, era boxsets etc.

It makes sense not to do it now so the current release is always the priority. If a new McCoy’s sales were slower because a Tom re-release was taking up funds of people, it’s cannibalising. The UK sales are much greater than the US and Australia so it’s here where it needs to do well.

    • Anonymous

      November 27th, 2020 - 7:55am

I honestly doubt it, by the time this range is wrapping up we’ll be in the latter half of the decade, the market is clearly heading in a particular direction and while Doctor Who has fortunately managed to maintain physical sales thus far, I very much doubt there will be interest from the BBC in doing a “standard release”.

Any “permanent” release will probably end up on a streaming service somewhere, either Britbox or a subscription based iPlayer if the licence fee gets scrapped in the next charter review which is a real risk.

    • daz

      November 27th, 2020 - 1:13pm

They will do Complete Doctor Sets in Standard cases I bet for the UK once the range is finished. With flimsy cardbord surround.

One final hurrah for those on fence about Limited Editions or new fans wanting them at that point.

Be interesting to see at what point the BBC discontinue the DVD’s.

After that streaming only for classic.

    • Gordon

      November 27th, 2020 - 10:30pm

@Basil – I am hoping for exactly the same – some form of “Wilderness Years” set including The Movie and also potentially, Curse of the Fatal Death, More than 30yrs in the Tardis, throw in Dimensions in time (if they can get around the non release / non profit clause) and Scream of the Shalka and other extra’s and you’ve got yourself a 6 disc set right there.
Also I agree on NuWho, whilst I own all of them across DVD and Blu Ray – I would have no issue re purchasing so the set is complete in the same packaging style. Although with the steelbooks still rolling out (which I don’t have as I didn’t start the collection) im not sure this will be soon – if ever – we can live in hope I guess

    • James

      November 26th, 2020 - 3:45pm

Would be better if they released the NuWho series as Doctors. As the box sets released for NuWho are smaller so they could do 10th, 11th, 12th 13th as single box sets. The Same for Torchwood and SJA if they did those.

    • TheWHOlegacy

      November 27th, 2020 - 2:35am

New series Doctors would be released as series and not by Doctors. You have to consider budgets when it comes to extras. No way would we get 40 odd David Tennant behind the sofas plus making ofs on one set. Series sets work for new series as you’d have the Episode plus the Full episode of confidential on the disc plus additional documentaries and making ofs. Series 7-present definitely need making ofs done as we only get the 10 to 15 minute behind the scenes stuff for the stories in those seasons.

    • James

      November 27th, 2020 - 11:13am

TheWHOlegacy only makes sense as Doctor Sets be better as the Classic Who sets being 30-40 eps on each where as only 13 eps on NuWho series’

    • Anonymous

      November 27th, 2020 - 4:49pm

13 episodes that are each double the length and mostly single parters demanding their own extras. There’s more footage in an RTD era series than practically every 70s and 80s series (especially the Sylvester McCoy series).

    • TheWHOlegacy

      November 27th, 2020 - 6:11pm

Exactly the new series is 13×45 mins (sometimes a few being 50-65 mins) plus 1×60 mins Christmas special. Only the 60’s season have 30-40×25 min episodes. The 70’s-80’s are around 20-28×25 min episodes and the McCoy era are only 14×25 mins. So the McCoy seasons are half the length of time as the new series.

It’s still less than the RRP (£49.99) which hasn’t changed. With how much content each set has I’m surprised the price hasn’t changed till now. It could be a few reasons it’s a bit more expensive. The restoration could have been more expensive or filming during COVID pushed the budget up. Could be a number of things

£44.99 may be a pre-order price that could drop on release date. It’s listed as £44.99 (or less) on my Amazon invoice. Still, even if it is that price who are we to argue? For all this, anything less than fifty quid is a bargain.

The only thing I would have loved to be on this set (and I don’t believe it is) is the b/w 16mm film VHS release of ‘The Mind of Evil’.

I remember being really upset I was about 9/10 when this came out on video in b/w at my local Woolworths; I loved Pertwee but wasn’t into 60s Who at the time.

All that blubbing was for nothing though; I bought it, loved it and it became my favourite Third Doctor story of the lot.

I must admit it’s the only DW story I find looks worse with restoration. The gritty black and white look really suited the story. Doesn’t quite have the same feel on DVD.

    • Erato

      November 28th, 2020 - 9:20am

I might not go that far, but I definitely think the b/w certainly matches up with the grittiness of the story. It’s so adult in terms of its content.

I remember my dad saying to me when I was young and he bought me the VHS to look on the bright side; this is how the vast majority of the population watched Pertwee back in the 70s because very few families (his included) could afford colour TV sets.

I love ‘The Mind of Evil’; I don’t think it gets the recognition it deserves.

Waste of Time and the Rani was atrocious bad, from Sylv’ a pratfalling to Bunnies endless sceaming. Hard to believe this could have been Colin’s last story! The season improves slightly with Paradise Towers which is mainly let down by Richard Briefs ‘Blaky’ from on the buses impersonation. The last 2 are fun frothy tales, quiet like Bannermen because I’ve always loved all location stories and it’s just meant to be wacky, what we would start to call oddball. Dragonfire, the best of the bunch introduces us to Ace, arguably one of the best modern, at the time, companions. Paving the way for 2 last superb seasons with the avenger duo McCoy and Aldred.

    • Gordon

      November 25th, 2020 - 10:23pm

Season 24 isn’t a great season but it’s got a ton of scope of new extras. There was a bunch of stuff that didn’t make it to the time and the rani dvd as there was no room and the budget wouldn’t stretch to a 2nd disc. Delta and the bannerman was pretty bare bones and didn’t even have a making of and I believe there are also some deleted scenes that didn’t make it on the dvd. There is also the the delta and the bannerman wrap party which has to be seen to believed but I’ve no idea if it’s clearable. I believe there is also some 71 edits existing like season 23. Sylvester will most likely do a in conversation with Matthew sweet too. Then there is the 5.1 mixes. It’s going to be a great season whenever it comes out. I’m thinking maybe 2021 as season 26 was planned to be released in 2019 before it got delayed and it would give the McCoy era 2 years between releases and it would free up season 2025 in 2023. But with season 8 coming out as soon as it did it could be out at any time

    • Bobby Fackrell

      November 26th, 2020 - 7:57am

Would prefer 25 but Delta and the Bannermen is a classic, grown fonder of Paradise Towers over the years too. The other two are rubbish though

      November 26th, 2020 - 6:43pm

‘Time and the Rani’ looks great with the bubble traps, the tetraps are well realised, plus Kate O Mara is quality.
‘Paradise Towers’ is a fairly good story. I’ve always liked it anyway!
‘Delta and the Bannermen’ is my favourite from Season 24. Good fun and great performances from the guest cast.
‘Dragonfire’ isn’t bad either. Great seeing Glitz again, and Ace makes an impressive introduction.
      I certainly would enjoy a season 24 Blu-ray release.

They don’t charge until it ships with preorders
You will also only have to pay the lowest amount of money it’s listed for during the preorder period.

    Pertwee Predictions

Does anyone else think we will be getting a Pertwee a year alongside a Tom a year? If this is the 50th anniversary of Season 8, then 2022’s first release would match the 50th anniversary of season 9, and 2023’s final release could be season 11 for the final release as another 50th anniversary tribute. Leaving 7 til last to give something major to look forward to as well as to figure out how to do a set with so few surviving cast members left.

For tom, which do you think will be next?
I heard work on 17 has been underway, but really wouldn’t know when or which set for Tom would be next – would they leave 13 for 2023 do you think as it is a classic…

Personally, I think 21 will be next as to bridge both the davison and colin gap since their last release, and wouldnt 20 go better in 2023 so Davison has even releases – 2019, 2021, 2023

Colin’s season 22 would probably in 2022 just because of the symmetry between the two 22s?

We are probably due a Sylv very soon and my thoughts are that 24, a less-well regarded series will be released around late 2021 or early 2022 and leaving 25, an anniversary series for 2023 or even 2024.

For Hartnell, I really can’t see them doing anything before 2023 and using season 1 for it’s sixtieth and then perhaps 2024 for season 2’s 60th and likely season 3 being the final release of the classic in 2025…

Troughton’s first season will probably come in 2024/5 as it is the hardest one to do despite how much easier it has been made. I think season 5 and 6 will be ‘completed’ in terms of gaps come 2023 and then they will be able to do things with them.

(I know they say they do not coincide the sets with animation, but i feel like they must do somewhat or else it would hardly be the curated collection they purport it to be)

Lastly, 25 years since McGann’s film coming up this May – which is also three months after Season 8 – could we be getting a nicely fit wilderness years set? I’m hopeful we will, probably not this sooon though.

This basically means as the collection goes on, the hardest ones are left til last so part of me feels like they will still want to space them out for monetary and marketing reasons and perhaps bulk the range out with RTD era sets including SJA and TWD…

Basically I’m just super excited every time they announce a set!!

I think we’ll be going through the even numbered sets for a while…

      I expect we’ll get Season 2, 6, 16, 20, 22 and 24 next but not in that order.

I still doubt they’d animate The Space Pirates in time but hope they leave an empty disc tray space in the set so there is room for when it is made. (As will no doubt be a 2 disc set.) The soundtrack should be included though on its own disc in the collection.

The same with The Crusade I guess.

The whole set is wonderful of course.

Does anyone know of a business or individual that will ship from the UK for reasonable? I’m getting panicky that this will sell out like all the others and then I’ll be left with no options other than scalpers on eBay.

I’m not sure Zavvi has ever carried any of the Collection boxes, unless you know otherwise. I’m in the same boat and I’m really stressed about it. Amazon needs to stop with this nonsense. I’m willing to wait. Anything is better than watching it sell out and get scalped for $300 on eBay.

I’m also in the U.S. and was wondering why Amazon is no longer shipping these overseas unlike previous ones. But I ended up pre-ordering thru Katy Manning’s website and she signs it as well! It’s more pricey ($120 which includes shipping), but it can be shipped to the U.S. and it will arrive sooner than waiting for it to become available on Ebay. And did I mention, it’s signed by Katy Manning! Good luck with whatever you decide!

Zavvi…. the last three things I pre-ordered with them, including the re-release of series 12, have failed to ship and remained pending / awaiting stock. Got multiple emails about the series 12 but it never materialised. I will never risk pre-ordering something from them again.

Never had a problem with Zoom or Amazon. For those with no other choice I’m sorry for you as I wouldn’t be happy until it was in my hands.

That Trailer is Outrageously Fantastic. Award winning surely. There are multi million dollar movies that dont get Trailers specially made, into Minisodes.

Oh what a Joy it looks. Scubbed up to within an inch of thier lives, these Episodes will be.

Interesting wording, on the CGI for Terror, and CSO Clean up. So Mrs Farrells Kitchen is much a part of the Episdoes, that to remove it has to be a special button 🙂

Wonderful. and how clever to wait for Monday to settle down and others to creates noise and Birthday surprises.

    Brilliant.

Very excited about owning this! Can’t wait to see the Season 8 Collection amongst the rest of my Whoniverse DVD and Blu-Ray releases!

Oddly enough…following the news about the upcoming release on to blu-ray of “The Web of Fear”, it got me to thinking that if they can release a story from 1968 on to blu-ray then with time and effort they could potentially release stories from before and and after that year. I honestly thought that we wouldn’t ge anything from before Season 10 because of the condition of some stories…and yet here we are with Season 8 on the way and looking glorious judging by that wonderful trailer! Great to see that the BBC are going for it! Brilliant!

Richard bignell on twitter: There will be a total of 2615 pages worth of PDF archive in the Season 8 Blu-ray Collection – Production files, scripts (including the draft storyline and scripts for The Pandora Machine), Radio Times, 1971 Annual, Sugar Smacks & Nestles promotions etc.

Chris chapman has directed 3 documentaries for this set
    1. Devils weekend
    2. The direct route
    3. Terrance and Me

Paul Cornell is also a little involved with this set but didn’t clarify what. (Most likely Terrance and Me.

Peter Crocker has said on twitter:

We looked at the CR output for Terror but there was little difference (part better, part worse) and would have involved massively more work. Daemons CR was not viable – it’s often poor on largely dark pictures

On whether colony had been restored from the film prints :

They introduced their own, not insignificant, problems but we got there in the end

      He’s summarised it as such:

Terror & Colony – completely new restorations from scratch.
Axos & Daemons – upscales based on DVD masters but with significant & innumerable tweaks/fixes
Mind – re-restoration based on upscale of DVD mid-workflow files to improve detail/grading.
      Audio v. much better.

Terror of the Autons will be wonderful to see in updated HD and colour and sound – the doll effect was actually pretty good compared to the odd array of effects in the original; a noticeable upscale of quality too! Also, a remastered title sequence visual was running throughout – do you think that will be used in the documentaries, or perhaps even on the updated effects??

      November 25th, 2020 - 4:44pm

Also, the fact they have Anjli Mohindra makes me feel like they could well be thinking of Sarah Jane Adventures -I mean it’s ten years since it finished and since Lis sadly passed away, it copuld be possible (purely speculative hope,) but wouldn’t she look amazing on one of these sets? I feel like SJA had a very classic who essence to it as well. After all, Lee Binding has sent off two sets to be printed – though its probably twenty or something else.

Or it could be that Anjli and Sasha are a couple. It makes it easier for them for filming as they don’t need to separate them as they are in the same support bubble.

    • Jackson Lake

      November 25th, 2020 - 5:01pm

Yeah definitely, There’s a lot of extra features they could include in a new SJA set, The Attic Convention from 2017, The Alien Files series, even school Reunion and K9 & Company as bonus features.

One thing I would like to see is more outakes and deleted scenes, as they only explored that once in the Series 1 set. Also, omnibus episode cuts, just cause it seems redundant having next time trailers on a complete blu-ray set, but that’s just me.

    • Auton

      November 25th, 2020 - 5:30pm

Yea they could add a toggle which you can click to watch them with or without the next time trailers in between stories

    • DPHill

      November 25th, 2020 - 6:01pm

They also have the ten audiobooks to add on there, photo galleries, continuity trails and trailers and making ofs that can be made. I was thinking behind the sofa would be something like ‘in the attic’ and there would be plenty of them to add. Not to mention farewell sarah-jane and new in conversation documentaries.

Somewhere easily around 16-18 discs. Split that in two – i want sarah on my shelf by the decade’s end…
