Looked at season 10 lately as it arrived yesterday and this one and season 7 is by far my two favourites on art work Lee Biden did for them 🙂

@Tucker Unless my memory is cheating, Mind of Evil episode 1 is apparently the only print that doesn’t have the chroma dots burnt in (e.g. had been telerecorded properly from colour to black and white, with the dots filtered out).

But like you guys, I’m really wanting to know what restoration techniques have been done for this season. I’ve spent so many hours of my life over the years reading all the details on the old RT website. 🙂 Plus I’m massively curious to see what is essentially being marketed as the definitive, curated version of “Ambassadors…” (*TWANG!*). I was (unfairly?) disappointed with the restoration of that back in the days of the DVD range.

“Spearhead”… I wonder how it will vary from the existing Blu-ray from a wee while back? I recall some didn’t like the grading, feeling it was too dark (which was a choice by the RT to resemble the kind of ITC dramas at the time…? [very hazy memory]).

Judging by the format these stories are held in, Doctor Who and the Silurians should look similar to Terror of the Autons, The Ambassadors of Death like The Mind of Evil and Inferno like Colony in Space.

I’m expecting Spearhead from Space to have less DNR applied this time, judging by Castrovalva and The Five Doctors’s film scenes. I also think it will have a more bluish colour correction.

I am curious to see how they have restored Ambassadors of Death the dvd release apart from the first episode was in bad shape to say the least, this would have been a monumental task. Doctor Who and the Silurians is one of my favourite classic stories that would have needed a fair bit of work done too

I’m curious to know more about the restoration work on The Silurians and Ambassadors as well. Spearhead is in good shape from the blu ray release and Inferno was cleaned up for a Special Edition. I see the Silurians has had episodes 2, 4-7 worked on by Richard Russell’s Colour Recovery Working Group. Makes me wonder about episodes 1 and 3, do these have no colour signal like the Mind of Evil episode 1 or is it felt the existing composite with off air NTSC colour signal is the best they have? Also what they can do with Ambassadors bar colour grading as these originate from colour recovered sources for the DVD from 2011?

Thanks Paul, I’m 42 but I regard Pertwee as my favourite Doctor, with the Great Baker (Tom) a close second. Whilst I remember the McCoy seadon as I was around 7, it was the re-runs from ’92 onwards on BBC2 that made me a fan. Pertwee stood out for me as the Doctor and and I really like all the stories in this season. I can’t wait to see what they do with The Silurians and Ambassadors, Spearhead and Inferno I imagine will be easier to clean up.

    Wishlist:

Jon Pertwee talking through Spearhead (this is the last chance to use it, if it still exists – it apparently was still around after the initial DVD was finalised and it was too late to include).

Spearhead versions comparison: VHS, VHS master, DVD master, SE DVD master (new prints in SD), SE DVD transfer (new prints in HD), original BD master (HD from neg), raw neg transfer. (Picture and sound comparisons.) Make it an easter egg if it’s too nerdy for normal people.

Silurians and Ambassadors comparisons: NTSC off-air, raw 16mm xfer, the different colorised versions. Plus optical vs off-air vs restored sound.

Ambassadors original American Film Technologie colorization test.

Raw SD transfer of Ambassadors ep 1, as the earliest surviving DW videotape, with dodgy split-screen and the like left alone (even video noise). It’d only take a gig or two.

A featurette on colour recovery can go with Invasion of the Dinos on S11 (where it didn’t fully work). Why they didn’t do something for S10, just including the old remastering feature without updates, I’ve no idea.

I knew it would be announced after it was leaked the other day on YouTube, Can’t wait to get this I expect this will be released around Easter as we already getting Joy To The World, The Savages, Probably The War Games In Colour or Special Edition, then this Season 7, There is a lot of good stuff coming in early 2025 early Christmas Present something to look forward to.

So we might get more stuff coming out next year, insistently 20th Anniversary since the revamp 2005 in March, it’s not an official celebration as that’s on 23rd November, but still it marks 20 Years since Christopher Eccleston had taken us on a trip of a life time. So would be nice if they have something in mind. Don’t know for instance Russell T Davies might have gone back to include the Deleted scenes cut from the First Series The Directors cut or The First Series 20th Anniversary Edition, it would be great if they did.

      December 20th, 2024 - 10:48pm

Russell has said he’s not doing anything for the anniversary so I’m not really expecting anything major like a new release with deleted scenes or other features. I Think a repackaged stand alone release from the remastered series 1-4 set last year is the best we are going to get. There is already the savages out the same week as the anniversary plus season 7 will be out a couple of weeks earlier plus war games in colour is out at some point then as well.

Having bought the remastered Series 1 to 4 and Specials, I hope they do similar for Matt/Capaldi and Whittaker too as a Moffat and then Chibnell collections.

    • Andy Dodds

      December 22nd, 2024 - 7:54pm

I think eventually that will happen Matt Smith Series 5 – 7 + Specials, Peter Capaldi Series 8 – 10 + Specials, Jodie Whittaker, Series 11 – 13 + Specials. The BBC double dipping again. They been doing it for years. We as fans are daft enough to buy it. As for the Episodes them selves I can’t see what else they can do with them apart from adding the deleted scenes.

Going by Toby hadoke’s Patreon photos he’s on the same sofa Geoffrey and daisy so I’m guessing:

Sofa 1: Katy Manning, Matthew Waterhouse

Sofa 2: Janet Fielding, Sarah Sutton, Sophie Aldred

Sofa 3: Toby Hadoke, Geoffrey Beevers and Daisy Ashford

Also they bumped into frank skinner during filming of the looking for Mac documentary so it’s possible that he might be in it. The runtime for looking for Mac is 48: 20. Chris chapman describes it as the most political documentary that he’s ever done with the range. This is the 12th documentary that Chris has done with him. (Looking for Peter, lenny, David, Dursley and Mac, living with Levine, weekend with Waterhouse, cookbook, hadoke vs havoc, abominable snowman and fang rock making ofs plus whose doctor who revisited, ). He has said he has another 4 collaborations with him shot and another 4 in in the planning stage

Glad Katy and Matthew are together again, they were a surprisingly fun pairing for the Season 15 BTS.

I like when you get those unexpected pairings that really work. Like Sophie and Peter Purves on Season 14, they had this really easy chemistry and you could see their enjoyment of the season grow with each story.

Also think that’s the first time to get Janet, Sarah, and Sophie on the one sofa. A fresh 80s companion mix.

There is a bunch of speculation thinking there might be a trailer after war games in colour but nothing concrete.

It’s also possible there isn’t one. Pete mctighe who normally does them has been busy with the doctor who spin off in between the land and sea. He may have been too busy. It’s also possible that they couldn’t think of anything for Benton. Another possibility is the restored footage for the trailer wasn’t available in time due to them still working. Could be many reasons.

@Gorden If they don’t have any ideas of what to do for an announcement Trailer they can always just do what they did with the Blake’s 7 Series 1 Set Trailer which had no new voiceover and solely relying on clips and onscreen text which I was quite happy with.

      December 21st, 2024 - 10:54am

My main fear about this set is the restoration. The last Pertwee set looked fantastic, but it seemed like everything sort of slipped with Season 20, 15 and unfortunately Season 25. They must have added some sort of upscaler but the results make the image look so smeary and it picks up details that aren’t there when you compare them with the DVD footage. This now seems to be a regular occurrence with BBC boxsets as it is the same with The Young Ones, Blackadder and now Wallace and Gromit. My sincere hope is that they do what they’ve done with Season 9. Remaster the film in its highest quality, overlay the NTSC recordings or chroma dot recovery in top and touch up the colour if necessary to remove colour bleeds and leave it be. No unnecessary upscaling to Spearhead, Silurians, Ambassadors or Inferno. Just do what you did before Season 20 and it’ll be the best set of the year. I’ll be absolutely disappointed if they upscale any of Season 7 when it isn’t necessary. It looks cheap if they do, much like with the recent Wallace and Gromit set.

This is indeed worrying. I haven’t collected a Limited set since season 20 so I wasn’t aware there were issues with the upscaling since. Has anyone from the restoration team addressed this? Why would they mess around with them when what they had going on with these sets, up to season 20, was amazing quality!

    • Gordon

      December 20th, 2024 - 11:08am

It’s worth noting that the team that handled blackadder/young ones have nothing to do with the doctor who restorations.

I didn’t notice anything wrong with the young ones. Wasn’t that much of an improvement with the remastered DVDs but considering its majority vt that’s not really a suprise. The film sequences were smashing though.

The issues with blackadder are quite possibly down to the editing techniques used and the bbc having ditched the masters but on the positive side the film sequences in season 1 looked great. .

From what I gather bbc had pretty much nothing to do with the release outside of distributing the disc in the uk. Ardman handled the restoration for the 4k disc. Whoever it was that handled it botched it massively firstly before anything else not applying hdr was a massive missfire.

It is also worth noting the ai usage on the doctor who releases aren’t recent. I found out recently It’s been ongoing since about shada 2017 just on a low level. It’s not something that has just been started to get used. Its to get it to an acceptable standard for blu ray. It’s probably become far more noticeable for some as the likes of horror of fang rock had a couple of restoration issues and season 25 is on 1 inch tape. I can’t say I agree with its usage but I get why it’s being used

    • Walter Hardback

      December 20th, 2024 - 1:20pm

Gordon: Do you know what software was used on Shada, and how? I noticed the heavy noise reduction, but didn’t spot sharpening and/or added detail. “AI” covers many bases though, as you could argue noise reduction and VidFIRE interpolation rely on analysis and machine learning.

If you want a “laugh” (note quotation marks), see what Paramount did to I Love Lucy with its added ghost faces. (The source who spoke to Indiewire is wrong though, or talking about a different episode – no way those faces were on the film material waiting to come out, those were added by insane software.)

    • Walter Hardback

      December 20th, 2024 - 2:22pm

Upscaling is just the term for going from SD resolution to HD resolution, so all classic Who outside of Spearhead is upscaled in one form or another; the issues come from how it’s handled.

I can’t say that I’ve spotted what are usually considered the typical AI artefacts on what little Who I’ve seen recently (it’s not like Aliens 4K – thankfully), just excessive noise reduction and filtering. It’s a quick and easy magic fix and any videotape noise is seen as evil, particularly upscaled on a big screen (hence its use on the other BBC titles too). Unfortunately the higher it’s dialled up, the more smear it creates and the more detail it takes out. But it’s cheap.

Personally I’d be happy with an SD-BD release of Classic Who, warts and all, but it would only sell about five copies.

    • Babelbro

      December 20th, 2024 - 8:25pm

Just to add to this – I still remember looking at the Restoration Team’s website entry on their 2008 dvd of ‘The Five Doctors’, with a screenshot of the Tom Baker footage, and while there was visible grain a huge amount of white haziness and more extreme noise had been digitally removed – basically the raw image just didn’t look viable at all to go on a commercial dvd put it that way, let alone Blu-ray 15 years in the future.

When the source image is in a poor or very low resolution state then of course it has to look presentable to a wider audience, and since most of the dvd range already used ai for both picture and audio anyway for nearly 2 decades, clearly it was working seamlessly.

The problem is studios and directors today utterly abusing the tools of ai and completely destroying too much of the original picture detail – while skimping out on actually going back to the source footage just to rake in more profit from falsely advertising their products as true 4k restorations (cough James Cameron).

    • Walter Hardback

      December 21st, 2024 - 5:11am

Mmm, “AI” is a terribly vague term because noise reduction and motion interpolation all involve software analysing the image and predicting/creating a replacement.

I don’t have the same memories of the Five Docs article though. I remember it comparing the original 1983 telecine transfer of the film inserts to the new one carried out for the DVD, meaning many of the faults just weren’t there anymore, like the analogue tape and telecine noise, or bleached out skies. Beyond the standard bit of noise reduction they used at the time, the only thing they actually removed was the wire in the Raston Robot scenes (much more visible in the new scan). You can see the 1983 film transfer on the original Five Docs disc, with only minor tweaking.

I’m not worried about the restorations at all. The stories on the S8-10 box sets looked great, I’m sure these will look great too. I was happy with these stories on VHS, on DVD, and I’ll be delighted with them on blu-ray.

I’m just happy to have them. It could be worse, they could still be missing from the archive.

Levine is definitely a marmite personality. Eccentric plus there feels like a performance at play especially when cameras are rolling. He also never seems to know where the line is. Heard numerous stories of things that he’s said or done that really comes across as bad taste. The dying baby comments in the time monster commentary is only one example. Or they’re aimed at people who only (90/175 x 100)% like the stories.

Or for dads whose kids don’t like Classic Who: “I’ve already selected the short version, now put your phone away.”

Or they’re cheap disc fillers created by one man and a laptop.

(I’m sure someone had fun though cutting them down as some kind of editing exercise…)

Were the 2 omnibus versions planed then dropped at the time?
As I recall from an interview Barry Lettes done on a DVD that he made notes for possible omnibus repeats.
Just wondered if true that his notes were used for the new omnibus versions?

    • Gordon

      December 20th, 2024 - 10:17pm

No these were never planned. I’m guessing they decided to do them after being inspired by the silver nemesis one.

      December 21st, 2024 - 8:38am

I guess Inferno was originally conceived as a 4 parter so it could be interesting to see a version with that runtime.

    • SVH

      December 23rd, 2024 - 5:59pm

@Bob Inferno was only ever a 4-part idea at the original story pitch stage. The Parallel World plot line had been inserted and it was developed into a 7-parter long before it even reached the script stage. So to see the ‘originally conceived’ 4-part version would mean removing the entire Parallel World plot and that would be impossible.

I wonder what the menu screen will be like for this season, no TARDIS interior, so it will be interesting to see what they do with it.

Maybe a bit of a mash-up? The console as it appears in Ambassadors 1 in the control room from The War Games?

Season 12’s TARDIS menus were a mash-up of elements from Seasons 11 and 13 weren’t they?

    • Bob

      December 19th, 2024 - 6:23pm

My guess is its appearance from Inferno.

    • DPHill

      December 19th, 2024 - 10:43pm

Season 12 obviously had no interior nor something standing for it but inferno and ambassadors both have the workshop, I feel inferno as this was such a classic story and it would be amazing to see it and Bessie there

    • SVH

      December 23rd, 2024 - 11:32am

I’d like to think the menu system will be the TARDIS console in the wooden work shed from Inferno, but the fact that S12 has a TARDIS console room menu system despite us not actually seeing inside the TARDIS in S12, I’m guessing we’ll get a similar mash up/interpretation Console Room menu system for S7.

Maybe a trailer isn’t quite ready – but they have dropped the details early due to the leak?

Maybe we’ll see a trailer when this may have “supposed” to have been announced – my guess would be a couple of weeks after new year.

Probably around March (which certainly rules out any sort of collection release to coincide with 20 years since Eccelston).

    • Tom Williams

      December 19th, 2024 - 3:08pm

This was hinted as February from the leak on eBay the other day but probably at this stage will be pushed till march

    • Babelbro

      December 19th, 2024 - 4:55pm

@David Where the heck did you hear about a Ninth Doctor Collection set?

There’s literally been zero serious mention of a Paul McGann let alone New Who 2005+

If this is legit, it’ll be absolutely fascinating to find out how the ‘restoration’ will be tackled – going back further beyond the broadcast masters to the (I guess) raw camera firewire footage? If so then damn it that would be beautiful.

Just don’t do it on a cheap ai job. Wallace and Gromit’s 4k’s been utterly massacred by it and looks awful.

Would be better to finish The Collection sets before re-releasing 2005 onwards yet again, again.

    • Gordon Wilson

      December 20th, 2024 - 2:43am

@Tom Williams. February was only “hinted at” because you’re only allowed a maximum of 40 days dispatch on any eBay listing – so from when the listing went live, 40 days later would take it to mid February. If you went into the actual description that they had made for it, they covered themselves by saying a release date in the year 2030, as they never knew when the official date of release actually was.

    • Tom Williams

      December 20th, 2024 - 3:07am

@gordan Wilson it wasn’t hinted actually as there is a seller who has listed one already on eBay and states end off February but Gordon said himself it is more likely in march as it was confirmed off Zavi I said it myself that it will most likely be pushed now till march which is more likely at this stage

    • Walter Hardback

      December 20th, 2024 - 1:41pm

A lot of early New Who was shot with a “Pro Mist” filter on the lens, which is a professional version of the old net stockings over the camera, so at least some of the softness is locked in. (You can find articles online explaining what these filters do to light sources, etc.)

Have they even kept the raw footage though? It was shot on Digibeta tape back then, interlaced, so it’ll always look soft. They could use AI software to help with problem diagonal stair-stepping effects though, I’ve seen some nice work there. (Look up AstroRes, which works brilliantly upscaling anime – even 480i digipaint series, creating sharp, fine HD outlines without artefacts.)

    • Gordon

      December 20th, 2024 - 3:05pm

I doubt we are getting anything 9th doctor related outside of a repackaging. It was only restored last year. They ain’t going to restore it again. Plus those involved with the range have said previously that there wouldn’t be any sort of discussion on the 2005 era joining the collection range until after the classic era is done

If there is a series 1 collection set in the works the collection team are not involved with it or even aware of it: Richard bignell: “It’s certainly nothing that the Blu-ray Collection team of heard of or have any part in.” If Richard says he knows nothing about it I’m convinced it ain’t happening.

I think In my opinion if they was allowed like on Etsy I seen custom steel book versions of series 1-Season one off blu ray standard form would be much better but I guess now days using steel book art work onto a standard form would be a lot off work and pressure too produce easy
