    From kalediscope facebook
DISCOVERY 638 – Doctor Who studio recordings
The Keeper of Traken scenes from episodes 1-4, Four to Doomsday scenes from episodes 2-4 and a BBC Schools series Today and Tomorrow episodes 3 and 4.
Earlier in 2021 Kaleidoscope planned to bid on a batch of Umatics that contained these recordings. An agreement was reached with a group led by Mark Humphries and the Starlord Consortium, so Kaleidoscope would not bid against them to keep the price low. Mark and his colleagues are delighted to allow Kaleidoscope to announce this find as a thank you for our help.
Mark says, ”There is a lot going on in the Doomsday tape with setting up the shots in the airlock and space walk to the Tardis” so the tapes are very interesting.”
Kaleidoscope had hoped to show some of the footage at the next Missing Believed Wiped but this will not now be possible. Mark and his team have been informed that hopefully the footage will be on a future Blu-ray release.
Umatics transferred to file by David Martin at Abby Video Productions

Season 17 and 20 are the closest seasons so it might appear there. Either that or hold them off and put them in the long rumoured wilderness years set along with any other footage that might turn up after their respective season that has been released

I rather enjoy season 15. The only real letdowns are the poor cso on underworld and some very tacky location filming in the invasion of time.

Image, horror and invisible enemy are probably my favourite stories from season 15.

    • Gordon

      July 5th, 2021 - 8:54am

Horror is great. Finishes off a trilogy of great stories with robots of death and talons. Invisible enemy is fine but I’ve never been the biggest fan. Used to think Image was boring but my opinion of it has really gone up in recent years. Sunmakers is wonderful. Closest we would get to a doctor who/Blake 7 crossover. Underworld is boring dull and clearly has no budget left to be done properly. Invasion of time would be a good 4 parter but alas it’s 6 parts

      July 5th, 2021 - 3:02pm

Season 15 is mostly a woefully cheap and not very cheerful affair. I love Horror of Fang Rock and Image of the Fendahl, but the invisible enemy with it’s whiskerly baddies with bulging eyes, and the prawn antagonist, even the introduction of K9 is marred by the noisy workings of his tracks. Underworld is totally cringe Worthingly bad and The Invasion of time had promise but is let down all the way bad shoddy production values, I mean Dr Who has done cheap villians but shaken tin foil!

    • philip.shaw

      July 5th, 2021 - 3:05pm

…missed ‘The sunmakers’ which was great.

    • the ergon

      July 5th, 2021 - 5:40pm

The bad production values for invasion of time is right and thats what i meant. What looks like a school corridor , an old swimming baths and somebodys workshop with black binliners stapled up in the background. All that Transdimensional engineering and it never looked as crap exploring the TARDIS. I can almost forgive the three uniformed vardans after this and their tin foil disguise.
Also Underworld might have been tolerable had they given us a decent enemy that wasn,t so inept and posed a real threat and theres only so much running and wandering around tunnels i can take. A shame because The seers and the guards had a look that creeped me out as a kid of the 70s.

Invisible enemy is actually quite fun and ambitious and with the updated special effects it is easily a great story

      July 5th, 2021 - 8:08pm

The invasion of time was meant to be film within the studio, but there was an industrial strike going on in the bbc, so the sets couldn’t be build. They had to quickly find a cheap location or basically not film it. All the information is on the extras for the dvd.

    • the ergon

      July 5th, 2021 - 11:11pm

And really cheap is the end result. Still at least we got the sontaran entrance at the end of episode 4. And Its a shame the ‘Romance’ between Leela and Andred was just tacked on to enable her and K-9s departure. She really should have gone out in a blaze of glory saving the doctors life.

Millennium effects have list the disc runtimes. Season 24 runs to a grand total of 54 hours full of material and that doesn’t include things like isolated scores, commentaries or 5.1 mixes. It’s by far the biggest box set in terms of content

Just had a look Gordon, yes it’s the longest runtime by far.
Sadly though alot of the earlier seasons won’t have nowhere near as long a run times as their isn’t that much extra content out their.
Having said that though even if seasons 1 to 6 don’t have a great deal of extras on, the runtimes will still be impressive due to the number of episodes per season alone.

Another amazing set of the season that I first remember watching aged 7, it pretty much began here for me and the 80s vibe still puts an ear to ear grin on my now middle aged face. Only thing I’d like is an option to view with Mels screaming edited out.

Yes but then I’ll be tapping the button mute, unmute, mute, on, off, etc etc like an old telegraph operator. I just find the pitch grating, like finger nails on a chalk board. It’s a minor negative in an otherwise enjoyable set of adventures. Just watched paradise towers and now I want a cleaner robot special from Eaglemoss, and maybe Kane with a melty face.

    • The ergon

She doesnt scream that much. And you know exactly when its going to happen. I think her screaming is part and package of most classic female companions. Although bonnie does take her violet elizabeth bott literally to another level on who. I,ve grown used to it over the years. If viewers can take those birth scenes in call the midwife ‘push’. Then bonnies screams are a brief irritation at worst. For me the biggest headache and irritation is ‘the ballad of the last chance saloon in the gunfighters. Its sung as a constant and at different speeds almost throughout. I,d hope they can omit this or at least have at the beginning and end of the episodes for the blu ray release. That i find grating and spoils a perfectly good romp of a story. Although i find it amusing when steven is held at gunpoint and forced to sing it on a loop through gritted teeth.
I,m sure neil was hinting at a cleaner the other day as special. I,d love one.

      July 2nd, 2021 - 10:43am

what i mean auton is i hope they can make it optional for those who don,t. Its not the greatest of songs and Peter Purves himself would attest to that but each to ones own.

    • Savo79

      July 2nd, 2021 - 11:05am

As you say each to there own, I was saying it tongue firmly in cheek (also I’ve got a 12 year old daughter who screams like that and small dog with a high pitched yap. Makes me high frequency sensitive I think.) But really I like things in their original format, as the creators made it. I think adding to sfx that bring the finished product closer to what was envisioned originally or adding footage that was only removed for runtime is fine so long as its alongside the original.

    • Auton

      July 2nd, 2021 - 11:25am

No your right ergon, I quite like the song but I know many people who don’t so it would be interesting to see an optional version without and see if the story would be better or worse. And an isolated music score of just that song as well would be even nicer

    • The ergon

      July 2nd, 2021 - 12:21pm

Actually bonnie langford looked the spitting image of an old girlfriend from 1987.(minus all the screaming of course) she reminds me so much of her thats why i have a soft spot for her character. Shame she was so underwritten and we never saw much of those computer programmer skills.

Love the behind the sofa for time and the rani. They all seem to be having a lot of fun watching it. Bonnie Langford especially is on fine form. Even Janet isn’t overly negative though she did call colin’s outfit a crime against fashion haha. Peter is rather bemused and unhappy at Sylvester winking at the camera. He’s also annoyed that his daughter Georgia recently named Sylvester as her favourite doctor but it’s all done in good fun. I really was surprised at how positive everyone was. It’s a very different contrast to the making of which was far more critical

It’s possible, but it seems more likely to be for the rumoured Abominable Snowmen animation. Although I wouldn’t complain if season 5 came out in 2022, I would rather they wait a bit for Abominable and Wheel to be animated.

    • Prof Horner

      June 29th, 2021 - 2:15pm

Well I did think that ,but now I wonder if maybe they will held back to a time when there are only sixties season left.with the amount of episodes in these seasons it is hard to see how they could release three sixties seasons a year. But with seasons four and five complete with animation they won’t need so much work on them as the other four, we may get a couple a year at of the range. Well hope we get season six , which is the first season I can remember.Well if McCoy was truly the best of the bunch then the others must have of been truly awful! Clive Merrison would have been great so called dark Doctor, afar better actor than McCoy could ever be.

    • Anonymous

      June 29th, 2021 - 8:16pm

I hate to say it but do you think they could just be filming the 60s extras before certain actors sadly leave us?

    • Gordon

      June 30th, 2021 - 10:07am

It’s possible I guess but filming a making of on location would take a lot of time and money to organise and plan which bbc studios would want to recoup the money sooner rather than later. Providing there isn’t any delays I wouldn’t be too surprised if it came out within the next year or so included in the heavily rumoured abominable snowman animation . It’s pure guesswork on my part but I don’t see season 5 coming out till after the 60th anniversary. Assuming the rumours of abominable getting animated are true it wouldn’t surprise me if wheel wasn’t too far behind that. If both come out by the end of 2022 that means 4 out of the 7 stories will have been very released in little over the past 2 years and enemy is only a couple of years older. I think they would want a break for a year or 2 before expecting people to pay for it again. Later on in the range they might not have that luxury of having a buffer between seasons getting completed and seasons coming out but at least with 1 2 and 6 it would only be 1 title that would be recent and not 4

you too? Received my copy today, had the same problem, the disc trays were dislodged from the bottom of the box. I wonder if that’s a common thing. Wondering if I should ask for a replacement or not. Slowly checking the discs for defects. It’s weird, none of the discs were dislodged but the bottom glue was completely dry.

Loved the audition process for the 7th Doctor. Dermot Crowley is terribly camp, but I thought David Fielder was good, too much like Tom Baker perhaps. Sylv obviously the best.

His Doctor is immediately there, enigmatic, gesticulating and an engaging performance.

Having watched all 3 auditions you can see why they went with Sylvester

You can really feel his character coming through. A fully rounded performance, the other 2 acted like old Dr Who’s, an impersonation rather than offering more of their own personality into it.

Received mine today. The plastic bit which holds the blu rays isn’t attached to the box itself and it’s left marks on the inside back cover. It’s the first problem I’ve had with these sets but I’m not happy. I’m now getting a replacement which is coming between 14 July to 3 August!! I was really looking forward to giving this set a watch too!!

I could’ve done, but I wanted to make sure that they still had it in stock so that I could replace it. I thought that if I leave it a few days, it would become out of stock (knowing my luck). Can’t wait to final watch it though!! The artwork also looked amazing as ever!!

    Spoiler? Maybe

I’ve watched the Time and the Rani part 1 extended, but what on earth are the weird multi coloured “blockbuster” boards whizzing around with the TARDIS??

    Anyone know?

They were satelites. being knocked out of orbit. Cut from original footage. but restored for the extended episodes only.

Fantastic PQ. brilliant extended edits. and the BTS was so funny and brilliant. Great sport Colin Baker too. for being there.

The menu is mad. you click on something and there are ecen more choices.

Must be a record for the amount of stuff on one BR disc

Mine has arrived also. I know some folk got theirs before release date, but I really can’t complain about it arriving on release date, especially as some folk have had theirs delayed a week.

Looking forward to gorging on special features.

Indeed 17 to go to complete classic who, I am so so hopeful that a “Wilderness Years” set comes along – along with NuWho re pressed into this format

    • Haza14

      June 28th, 2021 - 7:56pm

The same happened to me. Cancelling and reordering from another company is easier said than done. I’d be happy to wait if it was guaranteed I’d get it but with no communication about any delay and knowing what’s happened in the past I don’t know if they’ll ever actually get that stock in! Feel like I’ve been lead on a not so merry dance today. It’s fun trying to collect these box sets isn’t it! Don’t feel I can relax about it until I actually have it in my hand! On the bright side the box set itself looks great as always!

Mine arrived this afternoon in top condition no complaints but is the tardis supposed to be upside down on the back of the box? Just looks a bit odd

People keep going on about the so called “wilderness years” set, what have the got to put in it the TV movie or am I missing something here?

    • daz

      June 29th, 2021 - 6:50am

Yes. Tardis upside down as it represents the pre-titles sequence for TATR. It was all over the shop in that scene.

Wilderness Years will feature everything from 1990 onwards to 2004. So a lot of features as well as TV Movie, 30 Years in Tardis, Charity Specials and so on.

@daz really hope they include Scream of the Shalka on it… I know its not canon anymorebbut it is a wonderful What-If adventure… Or could be cannon if it was a regeneration spin off affected by the Great Intelligence in Name of the Doctor…

    • daz

      June 30th, 2021 - 2:48pm

Martin. No doubt it will be on there.

With Lee Bindings artwork it would be great to see that 9th with the comic relief Doctors too somewhere on the inner packaging but 8th Doctor taking centre stage on actual cover.

Sometimes we have to make a choice between running this as a news site, and confine comments to the product, as it always should be, or letting a small percentage of people hurl vile abuse at a retailer because they did not get their expected allocation on time. people have had problems with other retailers but are far less vocal.

We also got “that email” but its been despatched today / delivery tomorrow and so will be a day late – so what.

I don’t think Colin bears any grudges against Sylv and they get along great. Love how they mimic the Troughton Pertwee bickering at cons and conventions!

Exactly. Like I said. Tongue in cheek.
I know that Colin wouldn’t watch it back the day. Very understandable.
He quite often states that because he never filmed a regeneration scene, there were no other Doctors and HE is the still the Current Doctor. All for laughs.
