January 30th, 2026 - 8:54amRegarding video tape footage from Classic Who, such as the 1 inch tape mostly used in the Colin Baker – Sylvester McCoy era;
Could these tapes be digitized using VHS Decode / Domesday Duplicator method, wherby the raw radio frequencies of the tapes themselves are fed into a computer software, as opposed to a limited form of component / composite wire from a tape player to a capture card?
I’ve no idea what the Restoration Team uses for video tape + telecine footage but if you go to YouTube to see what VHS Decode / Domesday Duplicator can do the comparison results speak for themselves. I really wish I could learn to use it myself but it feels far too complicated to me, and the raw file sizes are enormous for a home computer / external hard drive.
So many clipped highlights can be brought back from it let alone giving the best image stabilization possible, and similar to native fine film grain, there’s also a real beauty with native analogue noise too, especially having seen actual interlaced master tape footage from 1980’s EastEnders currently sitting in the BBC Archive.

January 25th, 2026 - 8:51pmCan anyone remember exactly what the launch prices were for the dvds? (Singulars + boxsets).
I vaguely remember the ‘Trial of a Time Lord’ set costing an absolute bomb as well as ‘New Beginnings’ believing I genuinely wouldn’t ever be able to afford them
While I was at school I finally managed to save up enough money for ‘The Five Doctors Special Edition’ by (around) the late 00’s – that one alone felt like a really massive purchasing decision in the shop back then!
Missyrules
January 25th, 2026 - 9:49pmTrial was retailed at between £30-40 on release in 2008 the single releases had an rrp at £19.99 although generally they were sold at around £14.99 for most of the range up to the newest releases. The price of DVDs has maintained a steady cost. I paid £9.99 for new movies in 2000 and the price is exactly the same in 2026.
Gordon
January 26th, 2026 - 12:20amCan’t remember the rrp’s exactly (think it was about £20.97ish for single and £24.71 for twin)but single releases were mostly about £12.99 brand new from Amazon from Looking at my Amazon account from 2007ish. Though I think the war games was a bit more expensive. There was a couple of lower budget releases at £9.99. 2 story releases were about £17.99. 3 story sets were round about £30 though I seem to remember myths and legends being around the £35 mark. The key to time was by far the expensive. Think it was around the £60- £70 mark
Things that go bump in the night
January 26th, 2026 - 1:05pmThe prices quoted by Missyrules and Gordon for the individual DVDs and sets, makes the price of the ‘The Collection’ blu ray sets remarkably good value, considering the number of stories per season, the new special features and the carry over of all (mostly) special features…

January 26th, 2026 - 10:19pmI’ve been able to find a photo scan of a Woolworths advert for the ‘Trial of a Time Lord’ VHS boxset, and a Dalek VHS boxset, both priced about £35-£40 each here https://millenniumeffect.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/30th-Press-Cutting-1269×2048.png
It’s really interesting that today’s retail price for the Season 23 (Trial) Collection Blu-ray standard edition appears to be in sync with the original VHS retail price from the early 90’s
Nb7
January 28th, 2026 - 9:12pmWow that Woolworths ad takes right back. I got the dalek tin that year and was obsessed with Remembrance. Got it for my 9th or 10th birthday 93 or 94. I’d wound myself up that much with excitement that when I started The Chase I’d over done it. Always reminds me of that birthday.
The trial tin I got years later in 2004 on eBay. I’ve still got both.
Gordon
January 24th, 2026 - 9:31amThe chatter for next I’m hearing is space pirates at some point and s16 . The order for collection sets in 2027 could all depend on when space pirates comes out but 11 and 6. Some saying 6 will come first but I think the other way round seems a more likely but not impossible especially if they want another Troughton in early 2028.
Nb7
January 24th, 2026 - 9:38amFabulous! Season 16 seems likely as the amount of work compared to season 11 is very minimal.
The animations I’ve not touched yet as I’m waiting for them to appear on the collection sets.
Prof Horner
January 24th, 2026 - 10:05amWell this is great news Gordon, if true. I was thinking of posting about how disappointing that we have had no announcement on missing episodes and particularly future animations. If we get Space Pirates this year, we can hopefully get season 6 , the first season, I can remember after 16 and 11.
Bookcollector
January 24th, 2026 - 11:36amAhh, space pirates… silly plot, quite dull, some rather poor acting by the guest cast… and I can’t wait to get it as an animation! Definitely a story that will be improved by visuals. I always enjoy reading pirates ore than listening to it but an animation will be very welcome.
daz
January 24th, 2026 - 12:44pmI enjoyed Ian Levine’s Space Pirates as it definitely works better with visuals so hopefully it has been animated so we can get Season 6 in full eventually.
It would be good to have Troughton’s first Season set as the most complete episode one too.
Bookcollector
January 24th, 2026 - 1:37pmThe loose cannon version is good and helps it a lot. Never watched a levine recon as I have issues with him, won’t say anything beyond he is not a pleasant man to have interactions with.
Rob
January 24th, 2026 - 7:11pmI’m happy whatever it is, as long as the animation is decent and they stay true to the original design
Prowl1701
January 24th, 2026 - 10:20pmI hope pirate planet gets some updated effects, and maybe Armageddon factor too, they could use them.
I think space pirates could be reevaluated with a good animation.
Gordon
January 25th, 2026 - 3:39amI hope the chatter is right too and it is correct. We are long overdue a season completing animation.
Prof Horner
January 25th, 2026 - 9:41amWell next year they are going to have to start releasing sixties seasons. 5 and 6 are most likely to be completed with animation first. Season 1 is more tricky with Marco Polo harder to animate. Hopefully we will here positive news soon.
daz
January 25th, 2026 - 5:18pmUnless they change it to just 1 collection release per year once 6 is out? That or we get the Wilderness years thrown into the mix before Seasons 5, 1, 4 and 3.
Mac
January 25th, 2026 - 5:20pmI thought The Space Pirates would be low on the list of animations because of the poor quality of the surviving soundtrack.
Scotel
January 25th, 2026 - 6:11pmPeople have a meltdown when the trailer isn’t out in the week they want, delaying the releases to one a year is never going to be considered acceptable as much as it would give us a better quality product by letting the animations carry some of the work in the mean time.
Amypondfan
January 25th, 2026 - 8:27pmSpace pirates soundtrack is fine. Never noticed any issues with it and I’ve listened to it a few times.
Mac
January 25th, 2026 - 9:49pmI just remember Mark Ayres saying the soundtrack wasn’t the best
Amypondfan
January 25th, 2026 - 9:56pmThere are definitely worse ones mac. Marco and masterplan both have very poor recordings on the CD releases. Remember though that technology has advanced greatly in the years since these were first released on audio and mark can do a lot more now.
Gordon
January 26th, 2026 - 12:01amThe soundtrack is definitely in the poorer side however it’s been 2 decades since it had any sort of remastering or restoring. With advances in technology it should be improved since then though there probably is still limits that can be done.
mac
January 27th, 2026 - 12:26amThe Randolph tapes improved The Daleks Masterplan
Scotel
January 27th, 2026 - 1:16pmBit of speculation on my part but curious to know what people think.
We know they were looking at a new system where as work started to wrap up on one animation the team would start transitioning onto the next project to reduce downtime. Assuming everything kicked off reasonably quickly they must be a good 8-9 months into whatever the next animation is.
I wonder if that’s what’s happening here, the 2026 animation is now into full production and so they’ve now started the preliminary work for the 2027 release. Might be a bit tight for a Season 6 set at the end of the year but could explain the sudden change in rumours.
matt flin
January 27th, 2026 - 1:58pmDo we know yet whether there is going to ne a 2026 animation release? Myth Makers?
Scotel
January 27th, 2026 - 2:22pmThey were negotiating a new contract in March last year, it would be rather odd if there wasn’t a release in 2026. When in 2026 is another matter entirely. Another four parter would probably be July, if it is The Space Pirates then towards the end of the year.
Amypondfan
January 27th, 2026 - 4:21pmScotel I imagine the season set will be at least two years after the animation is released. They need to get money from the animation release and if people think it will be added to a season in just a few months people won’t buy it. Don’t know if Gordon agrees but I think if say pirates was released in 2026 I think the season 6 set might be late 27 early 28.
Prowl1701
January 27th, 2026 - 4:56pmSeems to be about an 18 month window from a solo animation release before it is used for something else like being on YouTube, or the iplayer. I suspect it will be the same with the boxsets.
Prof Horner
January 27th, 2026 - 5:23pmSeason 11 will probably be the last colour season released next spring. So unless we get The Wilderness Year’s in the autumn of 2027 , you would think that they are going to have to start releasing sixties seasons by then. With amount of animation still needed to be done to complete sixties seasons, maybe they will shorten the time from stand alone to season box sets. There is still the missing episodes hopefully to come that maybe will make a difference to these seasons too.
Missyrules
January 27th, 2026 - 6:57pmProf, remember they released season 2 without an animation, just a recon so it’s no guarantee that they will wait for the seasons to be completed with animation before release.
Gordon
January 28th, 2026 - 9:19amThe gaps may get shortened I suspect as they may not have the luxury of a year -18 months grace period in the next couple of years especially when there may not have other ready releases. If say Marco is out early 2028 for example I can see them maybe going 6-12 months before the s1 release as they may hit a wall where no other season is ready. If they can get wheel and space pirates out 2026/2027 that would buy them a year but I can see the well of complete seasons truly run out by late 2028.
I have kind of flip flopped on it based on the info on hand and the time we got left but I suspect some seasons will be “complete” with animations unless the rate of animations changes or the collections goes once a year. Some will get completed 5 and 6 i suspect. Unless Marco is already in the works already I can see s1 getting released with a recon. S3 is tricky because I don’t feel it’s in a releasable place at present. I do think myth makers will get an animation even if it isn’t imminent (I’ve heard mixed things on whether or not it’s being worked on currently. Some saying it’s currently being done. Some saying the bonus features are being done later so I’m not sure). Massacre might get done after myth. Masterplan is an epic job so I’m not sure there is time. 4 I can see smugglers getting done with highlanders being a recon. Unless the animation timetable changes I can see the animation range outlasting the collections.
If it can only be 1 release a year to the end of the range round about 2030 I’d go for:
2026: space pirates s21/16
2027: wheel in space s11/6
2028: smugglers s5/1
2029: myth makers/mission s4/wilderness
2030: the massacre s3
That would leave Marco Polo, the crusade, masterplan and highlanders unanimated ie the hardest 4
If they can get it to 2:
2026: space pirates/smugglers s21/16
2027: wheel in space/myth makers s6/11
2028: Marco Polo/highlanders s5/s1
2029: massacre/ masterplan part 1 s4/w
2030: the crusade/masterplan part 2 s3
It would be a really tough turnaround though.
Prof Horner
January 28th, 2026 - 2:51pmGreat insight as always Gordon. The question is would be we be happy wait a bit longer for season 3 to come out if it was completed with animations ? I certainly think if it was pushed back for Daleks master plan animation, it would be worth the wait.
SV7
January 28th, 2026 - 4:33pmI’ve always been totally fine with the idea of waiting a few extra months and/or years for a 60s season if it means it will be a more complete product. But then again, I’ve always been a fan of the animations. I know some are more well done than others, but I’m just grateful that they exist.
I still sometimes take a moment to appreciate that we have official releases of Power and Evil on DVD & Blu-ray!
Jack
January 29th, 2026 - 8:32amAnyone know if the chatter for space pirates being the next animation has any relation to the missing episodes that Film is Fabulous have found, or should we be expecting two different stories from these two pieces of information
Gordon
January 29th, 2026 - 9:50amNothing to with film is fabulous (the animation will have been planned and in the works for ages) but as they animate full stories anyway it could still be a posibility that they found something off it.
Duncan
January 31st, 2026 - 6:07pmI’ll be very happy if The Space Pirates is released. I don’t think it’s the turkey that fandom thinks it is. Its main issue is the vast amount of model shots filmed. Was 2001 an influence ? They were both doing the rounds about the same time.
Anyway, maybe then we’ll get that Season 6 collection!
Ricky
January 21st, 2026 - 1:57pmI’d be very up for watching this ,the original will never be beaten but it’s a show of its time and very much a one off , with that in mind and with a fresh set of eyes and some care this could be amazing . Does seem to sound more likely this time round .
Ricky
January 21st, 2026 - 1:59pmThis post is meant as a reply to the Blake’s 7 story below, Apologies .
RPG74
January 19th, 2026 - 1:00pmWell this is interesting. Blake’s 7 is being given the reboot treatment by the producers of The Last of Us. They’ve bought the rights, apparently. Might generate wider audience interest in the recent B7 boxset releases, which’d nice for the team producing them.
Gordon
January 19th, 2026 - 1:08pmI’d assume they would be finished the box sets by the time it starts airing. Going by the image from Peter Hoar it’s aiming for a 2028 start date. Perfect timing for a complete 1-4 set if you ask me. I’m definitely going to watch if it happens. .
Prof Horner
January 19th, 2026 - 3:23pmThey have been talking about a reboot for years. I will believe it when I see it . Star Trek returned when Doctor Who died the first time. Maybe Blake’s Seven can return to fill the gap with Doctor Who absence this time round.
Prowl1701
January 19th, 2026 - 4:51pmNot sure how I feel about the producers of the last of us getting their hands on Blake’s 7. Could be really good, for sure, or could be utterly disappointing. I’d be willing to give it a watch though.
Gordon
January 20th, 2026 - 4:56amHaving read up It’s not the producers of the last of us. It’s only one of the director’s (Peter hoar) that is involved. The producers are Peter Hoar (also directing) Mathew Bouch (good girl’s guide to murder, famous five (2023) and Sarah Jane adventures producer) and jason leigh ellery (big finish owner and a million other things). They snapped up the tv rights
Prowl 1701
January 20th, 2026 - 6:36amWonder if it will gain traction, I know people have been trying to bring the show back for decades.
