Really interesting coming back to this page to read the speculation here on where physical media might go next.

I agree with Gordon’s points – It’s not possible to be able to see *what* physical form that media will be stored on beyond discs, of which Doctor Who’s sold on for the last 25+ years.

Without knowing how it would look, just at a guess – I wonder if the broad consumer generally would want physically smaller sets, and a storage medium that can hold far more than a BD 50 Blu-ray disc, perhaps more than a 4k disc – something that can really sell Classic Who as not having to be on hundreds of discs and shelves of cardboard boxsets – rather, something much more robust with less manufacturing cost.

If the above is doable in the future, I would say the next, likely next logical route would then be a per-Doctor-all-in-one-sets – containing all the disc contents from the collection sets, but without all the elaborate physical cases and packaging of the limited edition sets – something even smaller and sleeker than the standard editions.

Who knows, but it’s quite fun to try and imagine it.

Pretty sure after the Classic College sets are all done, the animations for all are completed and a NewWho Collection is done, that the next step is Doctor Sets.

The best version of each story housed in a hard case box set per season, then housed in a hard cardboard box set per Doctor.
    1/Hartnell 1,2,3
    2/Troughton 4,5,6
    3/Pertwee 7,8,9,10,11
    4/TBaker 12,13,14,15,16,17,18
    5/Davison 19,20,21
    6/CBaker 22,23
    7/McCoy 24,25,26

    10/Tennant 2,3,4,2009Spls,
    11/Smith 5,6,7
    12/Capaldi 8,9,10
    13/Whitaker 11,12, Flux, Spls

With 8 and 9 id see it as a Time War BoxSet: The Movie, Shada audio and Night of the Doctor for 8/McGann, Day of the Doctor and Engines of War audio for War/Hurt, series 1 for 9/Eccleston.

Also could release themed Box Sets in best quality/version.

Anniversary – Three Doctors, Five Doctors, Two Doctor, Silver Nemeis, Day of the Doctor, Star Beast, Wild Blue Wonder, The Giggle

TimeLords Updated – War Games original and colour, Three Doctors, Deadly Assassin, Invasion of Time, Five Doctors, End of Time

Regeneration Updated – either 1 to 16 OR separate Classic 1 to 8 and then New 9-16

Davros Updated – Genesis, Destiny, Resurrection, Revelation, Remembrance, Stolen Earth/Journeys End, Magicians Apprentice/Witches Familiar, Destination Skaro

Ice Warriors – Seeds of Doom, Monster of Peladon, Curse of Peladon, Cold War, Empress of Mars

Zygons – Terror of the Zygons, Day of the Doctor, Zygon Invasion/Inversion

Sea Devils/Silurians – Sea Devils, Silurians, Warriors of the Deep, Hungry Earth/Cold Blood, Legend of the Sea Devils (maybe Dinosaurs on a Spaceship)

Sontarans – Time Warrior, Sontaran Experiment, Invasion of Time, Two Doctors, Sontaran Strategem/Poison Sky

Key To Time Updated – cobviously this will be done as s16 when The Collection does it. But do it as K2T box set

Just some ideas. Doctor Who sells and is a big money spinner in merchandise side. Anyone else have any ideas? Thoughts?

      Honestly I’d lower your expectations.

All I’m expecting is Repackaged doctors sets once the classic doctor who animations and collection sets are done and that’s about it and it may just be repacked to just include the episodes to keep costs and disc count down.

I wouldn’t expect themed sets outside of maybe a complete dalek/cyberman/master set. Think with where physical media currently is and where It will be in another 5-10 years I just don’t see themed sets. Those days are pretty much over. Every thing has an end point. Doctor who has had a 26 year run of dvd and blu ray releases. One day it will reach a natural end

Sorry James but Gordon is right. By the time the season sets are completed and the animations are done (presuming we even get all of the stories animated) I don’t know if would be commercially viable to release season sets and linked sets.

Yes Gordon I Agree about Lowering Expectations. I Honestly think after the Classic Series Blu-ray Collection Sets and the Remaning Classic Animations that might me the End of Physical Media.
I know some on here will argue that Dr Who is a Big Money Spinner and Physical Merchandise will go on for ever.
But whether it be Blu- Ray, DVD, CDs, Vinyl, Figures, Figurines, Magazines etc. They all seem to be going Through tough times and Sales Numbers are Dwindling fast and won’t be Viable to the point were I think only Digital Merchandise will Exist in the Future?

    • The DR.

      August 3rd, 2025 - 2:17pm

Yes, if you want Dr Who Content or any other Content for that Matter you’ll Download it onto your Phone, Tablet, iPad, PC, etc.
The Same with Mucic, (It’s happening more and more already). Any Albums or Singles you’ll Download them.
Magazines are the Same, Your Favourite Magazines with be all Digital.
I Don’t Know about figures and Figurines etc but with fewer and fewer people Buying them soon they won’t be Viable to make and will also End.
Just because I’m saying this doesn’t mean I’m happy about it (As I am Not).
Has I’ve been a Collector of Phsical Merchandise for many Decades.
But I think most people can see what will Gradually happen in the Next few Years.

      August 3rd, 2025 - 2:57pm

Plus there is only so many times people will rebuy things no matter how much love there is. There is hypothetically about 18-20 classic releases era left:

      Season 1
      Season 3
      Season 4
      Season 5
      Season 6
      Season 11
      Season 16
      Season 21
      The wilderness years
      Marco Polo
      The crusade
      The myth makers
      The massacre
      The smugglers
      The highlanders
      The wheel in space
      The space pirates
Plus a mission/masterplan release that may get 1-3 releases.

In terms of repackaging I see

Season 2 with an animated crusade release

Complete season steelbooks if the market for them haven’t fallen off in the next 5-10 years. Plus you need to take into account will the market fall off before the end of the 27th steelbook.

      Complete first doctor
      Complete second doctor
      Complete third doctor
      Complete fourth doctor
      Complete fifth doctor
      Complete sixth doctor
      Complete seventh doctor

As I’ve said I do see the possibility of a complete daleks/cybermen and master sets as they are probably the ones that would appeal to more casual audience and buyers more. Obviously they need out masterplan wheel and season 21 first before that can become the reality

    • The DR.

      August 3rd, 2025 - 3:28pm

Just look at Big Finish with more of there Storys becoming Digital Only. Some are still Digital or on CD Format but others are Digital only.
Will this become more and more in the Next Few Years?

    • Bookcollector

      August 3rd, 2025 - 4:00pm

Physical media is all I’m interested in so the less there is the less I bother with. In the case of books I only buy physical books due to ebooks triggering my migraines off. But as a collector the idea of having a collection made up of electronic bits just seems pointless to me. And at my age (I’m 55 this year) I’ve more than enough physical books (around 8000 at the last count), DVDs (around 400) and CDs (around 1000) to keep me going into my second childhood lol. The only who merchandise I get now are the animations, target books, certain art books but not all, some charity books from obverse and chinbeard and the erimem series.
You youngsters can enjoy your digital loaddowns and going on facex and I’ll stick to reading my books by good old reliable candlelight and watching my DVDs on my steam powered TV!

    • James

      August 3rd, 2025 - 4:03pm

      Gordon
Why would dmp/mission have up to 3 releases?

Steel books would cost a lot wouldn’t they? Or could they do standard box sets and steel books?

      Would a rerelease s2 with crusade be a 2nd edition S2 limited {like s12} or just a standard version?

What would you have in your dalek\cybermen/master sets?

Would they do a newwho doctor sets also?

    • Amypondfan

      August 3rd, 2025 - 6:55pm

Masterplan would probably be split into three. Mission. Masterplan 1-6 and masterplan 7-12 mission would presumably be included with masterplan volume one but I’d hope it would have it’s own box rather than be on masterplan itself.

    • Gordon

      August 3rd, 2025 - 10:12pm

Because masterplan won’t be cheap to do. It might need 2 or 3 releases for it to become viable.

The collection sets are already being released under standard sets. It wouldn’t be a cheap purchase. Hard to predict how much each would cost as the market could be a lot different in 5 or so years time when they get round to it if they agreed to do it. Another thing that may decide things is how long it will take to release them. If the market can only sustain say 3 a year it’s a 9 year commitment to do them all. Considering you are talking 2040ish

A repackaged Season 2 would be a standard repackaging with an additional disc to include the crusade animation and any new features that would feature on the stand alone release.

Well the complete dalek/cybermen/master sets would be what it says on the tin. It will be 3 seperate sets and each one will include every story featuring that villan.

I suspect they will test new who but it’s years off. I suspect there will be a drop off as the episodes have had multiple blu releases already.

In honesty the discs are different I brought season 23 one time as my two bonus discs got damaged and the only difference I noticed is actually the age on the discs too the limited ones especially if anyone had season 23 standard/limited edition versions and saw between the two with age on the discs it’s no similar

Hello David, Has Gordon as mentioned on this Site a Few Times. Disc and Content wise there’s no Difference in the Standard Edition and limited Edition Whatsoever.
It’s just the Packaging that Varies.
The Limited Edition is in a Larger Fully Cardboard Box that Contains a Booklet with a Lot more Pages full of Text and Photos than the Standard Edition does.
The Limited Edition also have a Fully Illustrated Pouch Inside the Box which when Opened Reveals the Previously Mentioned Booklet.
The Standard Edition comes in the Usual Blu-ray Plastic Case which is much Slimmer aswell.
      Hope that Helps David.

David, Also if you look on this site when there’s a New post for the Blu-ray Collection Limited Edition Sets, Theres usually a photo that accompanies it showing the Larger Cardboard Box with the Illustrated Pouch inside and the Full Colour Booklet etc.
(As I mentioned, The Disc Count and Contents are just the same as the Standard Edition though).

We just get, I think, the one release in a blue plastic Blu-Ray case holding all the discs in the United States. No inserted booklets, though I think really early releases had a few pages inserts in them. Some had additional cardboard slipcases.

    • Snowman

      July 30th, 2025 - 6:00pm

      Hello David.
I wondered which Sets you received in the US. Sounds like you just get the Standard Sets. The Standard Sets are In the Regular Plastic Cases but there usually in a Cardboard Slip Aswell.
The First Few Standard Editions did also have a Booklet Included, but from Memory it only had about 6 to 8 Pages. Where the Limited Edition Booklets have 30 to 40 Pages of Text and Photos.
The Standard Edition Booklets were Very Abridged Versions of the Limited Edition Booklet.
The Limited Sets are really Nice Collectibles if you can get hold of them.
I think a few People From Abroad who Frequent this Site managed to get hold of the UK Sets.

    • David Minter

      July 31st, 2025 - 12:37am

It seems the cardboard slipcases have stopped being shipped with Blu-Ray sets now. The Sylvester McCoy Season Two set was shrink wrapped but didn’t have a slipcase.

I vaguely remember something about this with the limited edition.

There’s nothing to suggest they would but I often wonder if Season 19 will get a re-release considering the many editing mistakes throughout all the serials, that couldn’t be amended after its limited and standard editions went out.

I’m not sure how the above could be financially justified except if the Collection range offered complete per-Doctor sets in a minimal multi-amaray Blu-ray boxset each once the initial range has finished (Similar to the 007 Blu-ray boxset).

    • OllieOz

      August 2nd, 2025 - 11:44pm

Given how varied the perception of the motion issues have been, I think the definitive way to know for sure if anything has been done is for someone to kindly post the codes on the inner-rings of the discs when they finally get the release in-hand and then we’ll be able to check if they match the original LE release. At this stage I’m quite doubtful, but can only hope.
