Doctor Who Series 9 Soundtrack

Please note if you want the limited edition set please enquire about availability with your chosen retailer before ordering.

Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk (Includes Autorip)

Premiering in September 2015, the ninth series of Doctor Who featured Peter Capaldi in the title role in his sophomore season as television’s favourite time traveller. This all encompassing four part collection features general cues on discs one and two, the complete score from the episode Heaven Sent on disc three and on disc four the Christmas Special, The Husbands Of River Song.

Five time BAFTA nominee Murray Gold recently confirmed that he is stepping down from composer duties on the show after 12 years of providing some of the finest music to be heard on contemporary television. This is also the 12th Silva Screen release of his music from the 2005 revival onwards and underlines the breadth of Gold’s composing skill across over two and a half hours of music.

When comparing the episode rip times, it seems like the Singing Towers May omit the “Madman With A Box” part when River was upset. Are you able to confirm that? In the rip the theme starts around 2:45.

@ timelord327: I know, right?! Disc 2 so much shorter than Disc 1 – they could easily have put WAY more on there!

    • timelord327

      April 5th, 2018 - 9:37am

Well, when you add the times together, there’s only four more minutes on Disc 1, although they are both short compared to other soundtracks.

    • Adam

      April 5th, 2018 - 10:47am

To be honest, I hadn’t even looked at that. There just seems to be so much of the best music missing – bit of a let-down after such an annoyingly long wait.

  • alex

    April 4th, 2018 - 11:37am

well those tracks times confirm the absence of a good man variations in TWF as well as possibly the variations of the doctors theme in HB. Yet there is a 5 minute suite dedicated to sleep no more….. an episode that had no music in it…..

      April 4th, 2018 - 11:49am

I’m hopeful ‘Davros Approaches’ will include all the music when the Doctor is in Davros’ chair. If so, that could mean the nice choral version of ‘A Good Man’. We’ll have to see. ‘Back Home’ will possibly have the initial variation of ‘The Doctor’s Theme’ from Hell Bent, seems quite likely I think. Seems like the more militaristic version a bit later on won’t be on there, when the army turns on Rassilon, won’t be though. It is a bit strange that Sleep No More has a five minute track, but there was some good ambient and atmospheric stuff in there during key moments so hopefully it’ll include that, or maybe it’ll be something else?

    • alex

      April 4th, 2018 - 11:59am

Possibly yes. I just don’t really understand why they decided to leave out those tracks as they were some of best bits from series 9 imo. I suppose the only hope we have is them being released as bonus tracks on ITunes maybe? from past experience with those are they usually announced with the Track list or saved till it appears on ITunes?

    • Ash

      April 4th, 2018 - 12:11pm

That is a possibility, but I can remember the iTunes exclusive tracks for Series 7 were announced along with the full list of tracks. It’s not looking likely that there’ll be any at this stage. Some of the omissions for this series have been quite surprising. I didn’t realise at first that there was only one track from The Witch’s Familiar, it is a shame there isn’t more. Still looking forward to listening to the full soundtrack though.

    • timelord327

      April 4th, 2018 - 3:57pm

“Finding the Doctor” could possibly be one of the A Good Man Variants

    • alex

      April 4th, 2018 - 4:15pm

I think it is yes but the notable ones like consider the doctor and the vocal version as well as mercy is missing. and as for hell bent all the doctor themes seem absent. it’s just after w years your would think all the best bits would be on there

    • Adam

      April 5th, 2018 - 8:58am

I’m holding out hope that the rock version of Clara’s Theme might be an iTunes bonus. Easily one of the best pieces from Series 9 and it’s even an actual PLOT POINT of its episode – so how they can possibly leave that out is truly beyond me. You’re right, you’d think after such a long wait (for no apparent reason it seems) that they’d have made a better selection. Disc 2 is so much weirdly shorter than Disc 1 – they could easily have squeezed more onto it.

    • John Baker

      April 5th, 2018 - 1:37pm

      Also the rock theme
They better have bonus tracks or I am not buying

  • Ash

    April 4th, 2018 - 11:27am

I believe iTunes previews usually go up about three weeks before release (this was the case with previous soundtracks anyway) so I’m hoping we can expect something on Friday possibly. Silva Screen also used to put up a full track on their YouTube channel shortly before release as well (last time it was ‘The Majestic Tale (Of An Idiot With a Box)’). I wonder if they’ll do it again with this, and what track it’ll be.

I must say, I was surprised to see the Heaven Sent disc come in at only 14 tracks, but it’s possible some of the tracks could be little suites of music from the episode. We’ll get a good idea when the track times and previews roll round. One notable omission from the track list at this stage seems to be the music from the TARDIS scenes when the Doctor falls from the castle. It’s possible that this could form part of either track 3 or 4 though. Like I said, the previews and track times will give us an idea. The bulk of the episode’s music appears to be on here, so that’s promising. I’m excited to hear ‘The Shepherd’s Boy’ (or ‘Breaking the Wall’ as it was known; surprised to see them rename it but hey ho) in full, but some of the lesser known pieces are exciting too, such as that lovely little synth piece when the Doctor sees the painting of Clara (‘A Fly on a Painting’ surely), and also when the Doctor finds Room 12 too (hopefully part of ‘Two Events in Life’) – that’s a great little piece.

Watched Heaven Sent last night to check against the track list, and I’ve got a feeling that when he jumps out of the castle will be featured at the end of A Fly on a Painting, as the synthy part isn’t that long, and seems to flow quite nicely into it.

    • Philip

      March 31st, 2018 - 9:48am

If the score was completely throughout ‘Heaven sent’ that would only be about 45 mins of music plus the theme tune at either end, that leaves about 30 minutes on the cd for other scores, what a waste. Would have been better to have both ‘Heaven sent’ and ‘Hell Bent’ on the one disc.

So happy we’ve got a release date! But I must admit, I am a bit (or a lot) disappointed that #ThePlanesHaveStopped and the Skaro (The Dark and Endless Dalek Night) variation isn’t included in the soundtrack. And I’m hoping that Disc 2 only has 14 tracks on is just a time limit thing. I know Disc 3 & 4 only have 14 too, but they’re based on one episode (each).
