BBC Studios announces Season 23 as the next installment in the DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION Blu-ray range

BBC Studios continues to offer Doctor Who fans the opportunity to build their own home archive on Blu-ray. The first jam-packed release for Colin Baker’s Sixth Doctor, Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 23, debuts on 7th October 2019 (Revised from 23rd September.)

In 1985, Doctor Who was taken off the air for an 18 month hiatus. When it returned, it was with an ambitious fourteen-episode adventure, The Trial of a Time Lord. The epic story saw the Doctor on trial for his life, with the court examining his adventures with companion Peri (Nicola Bryant) and looking to his future escapades with new companion Melanie (Bonnie Langford).

This season saw the return of popular villain Sil, along with the Master, the towering robot Drathro and the plant-based Vervoid monsters. With the Inquisitor (Lynda Bellingham) overseeing the proceedings, it was the Valeyard (Michael Jayston) who proved the greatest threat, hiding his own sinister motives for wanting the Doctor’s downfall.

With all episodes newly remastered from the best available sources, this Blu-ray box set also contains extensive and exclusive special features which include:

  • Extended edits – of all fourteen episodes
  • Terror of the Vervoids – four-part standalone edition with updated Fx
  • Immersive 5.1 surround sound & isolated scores – on all 14 broadcast episodes
  • Behind the Sofa – new episodes with Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant, Bonnie Langford, Mark Strickson, Frazer Hines and Matthew Waterhouse
  • The Writers’ Room – Eric Saward, Philip Martin, Christopher H Bidmead & Waly K Daly discuss the ‘Lost’ Season 23
  • The Doctor Who Cookbook Revisited – brave cast members tackle their original recipes from the 1980s official cookbook
  • The Doctor’s Table – join Colin Baker and friends for dinner
  • In Conversation – Matthew Sweet chats to companion Bonnie Langford
  • Unseen studio footage
  • Rare archive treats
  • Convention footage
  • Blu-ray trailer
  • HD photo galleries
  • Scripts, costume designs & more in the PDF Archive

The six-disc box set also includes hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD.

DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION – SEASON 23 stars Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant and Bonnie Langford with Michael Jayston and Lynda Bellingham. Guest appearances include Anthony Ainley, Nalbil Shaban, Joan Sims, Christopher Ryan, Michael Craig, Honor Blackman, Tony Selby and Geoffrey Hughes.

I ordered from Zoom too and mine still says sent to warehouse also. My fingers are crossed that they have despatched them today and just not updated their online system but that’s wishful thinking.
Like Gordon, I assume that they will dispatch today and we will recieve it hopefully tomorrow.

If 14 is the first season of next year as rumoured, isn’t it a bit late to be recording extras for it? Could be likely I suppose, but maybe they’re doing stuff with him for Season 17, seeing as they’ve already got the Lalla content sorted for that?

    • James

      October 4th, 2019 - 10:45am

I don’t think it will be stuff for next year’s Tom set as Chris Chapman has said in the past they are usually 4-5 sets ahead when filming for the new features so I think they are recording for the 2021 Tom set, which I’m hoping will be Season 16, as this will mean we have 4 Tom sets which are evenly spread out during his tenure… 12, 14, 16, 18.
So yeah I think, 2021 set or possibly just saving time and banking extras for a Tom set which won’t be released for a few years

Not Necessary too late. They recorded the season 10 Bts about 4 and a half months and Ed stradling also recorded the Matthew sweet footage for the third man documentary about 4 and a half months ahead of release.

I’m very impressed with this list. This is what annoys me with people complaining about the price, i.e. this having less episodes/discs than some of the others. You’re not paying for the episodes really, and if you are, get the DVDs down your local Cex. You’re paying for the hard work and dedication that goes into the new extras, packaging, promotion, etc. and £40 is not a lot to pay considering the cost of these episodes in the past. Remember, the original DVD box set of Trial of a Time Lord was £50 RRP, and this is a tenner less with almost double the original content. These sets are tremendous value, and long may they continue.

I worked out how much longer each episode is going to be based on the original lengths of the episodes:

      Episode 1: 4 mins 32 secs longer
      Episode 2: 10 secs longer
      Episode 3: 10 secs SHORTER
      Episode 4: 1 min 23 secs longer
      Episode 5: 1 min 58 secs longer
      Episode 6: 22 secs SHORTER
      Episode 7: 48 secs longer
      Episode 8: 3 mins 6 secs longer
      Episode 9: 4 mins 36 secs longer
      Episode 10: 32 secs longer
      Episode 11: 9 secs SHORTER
      Episode 12: 2 mins 18 secs longer
      Episode 13: 1 min 18 secs longer
      Episode 14: 2 mins 10 secs longer

3 episodes loose time which is very disappointing
However it is 22 mins 51 secs longer in total

I cannot watch the new series of Doctor Who. It is nothing more than a soap masked behind a sci fi fantasy. The show is Doctor Who in name only. I can’t get past the overly sentimental story lines where every episode needs an emotional consequence. They repeated themselves over and over again with companions becoming super powerful…Rose Badwolf….Donna The Doctor Donna….River Song being able to Regenerate because of exposure to the time vortex during conception (this is ridiculous…the Time Lords are the most advanced species in the universe, surely they just genetically engineered their biology hence the fixed number of 12 changes with the ability to add more. Being a time lord is more than the ability to regenerate. What about the decades upon decades of study at the Academy. The new series constantly simplifies such things)…Clara travelling the universe in a Tardis in between heart beats and Bill travelling the universe with her alien girlfriend which is just repeating Clara’s ending. Killing companions over and over and over again, but they are not really dead over and over again. Only 1 new monster is great and that is the weeping Angels. All the other new ones are forgettable. They overly use the Daleks and the Cybermen. It has been overly nostalgic. If I want to watch classic Doctors and monsters I will just put on Seasons 1-26. So I don’t think all Doctor Who is watchable…only the original seasons.

    • David

      September 3rd, 2019 - 10:41am

Perhaps because of the certificate change it’s delayed it’s trip to the printers (also maybe checking that all the discs are labelled correctly as the mock up has disc one on all of the discs visible) but mostly probably the change from PG to 12

    • Thetruth

      September 3rd, 2019 - 1:05pm

One day they might not get delayed after all these years does it still need to be classified?

So what’s been cut to get it down to 12 then?

    • Rob W

      September 5th, 2019 - 7:24pm

It might not have been cut, just re-classified at a lower rating. I can’t find it listed on the BBFC’s website though…

    • I Cotterill

      September 6th, 2019 - 9:42am

12 is actually a higher rating than PG.

    • Lee

      September 7th, 2019 - 12:13pm

Things being cut out wouldn’t cause it to go from a PG to 12. Things may have been added that cause it to go from PG to 12, but not cut out, as that would lower the rating.

BBFC Ratings from highest to lowest are:
R18 – Adult works for licensed premises only
18 – Suitable only for adults
      15 – Suitable only for 15 years +
      12A – Cinema release suitable for 12 years +
      12 – Video release suitable for 12 years +
      PG – Parental Guidance
U – Universal (Suitable for all)

    • MIKSK89

      October 1st, 2019 - 1:46pm

Plus it may have been manufacturing errors on the discs themselves (even the first 3 Collection Boxsets as well as the Blu-Ray boxset of RED DWARF Series I-VIII had problems leading them to be pushed back, all still had problems despite the delays to get them fixed) the BBFC rating may not have been the reason as sometimes a proper BBFC label rather than the BBFC TBC rating to show the design layout.

Season 26 is practically confirmed by this point, with it being the 30th anniversary since it aired, and they need a McCoy soon anyway so we’ll have a season for every Doctor whose episodes are complete. We also know extras have been worked on. Season 14 has been rumoured after that, which makes sense as it’s a split of two popular companions from a popular era, and we will get Tom sets more often than others, due to the amount there are and the need to balance them with others. Then, many people have hoped for Season 6, as it would fit the 100th anniversary of Troughton’s birth (as with Season 10 and Pertwee), plus it (after Season 2) has the least amount of missing episodes-The Invasion has already been animated and The Space Pirates is unlikely as it isn’t the most popular of stories and there is very little visual evidence left-however, this could be a positive as it could largely be remade with models (given its space setting) and we wouldn’t be able to tell the difference, with pictures and the audio to fill in the parts with actors, obviously. Maybe a cut down recon like Galaxy 4 on the Aztecs Special Edition? Who knows?

    • Jamie

      August 28th, 2019 - 12:15pm

I’m thinking Season 26 will be officially announced in the next two weeks. They seem to be announcing the next set due a few weeks before the officially announced set is released, it helps to keep momentum going for the range.

I tried to get a copy of today’s DWM in WHSmith’s this morning and they also didn’t have one in. Maybe they’re running late with publication for some reason.

n a future box set of season 11, if they make the special updated effects for “Invasion of the Dinosaurs”, do you think they will take into account the new scientific discoveries for the appearance of the dinosaurs? (example: t-rex with feathers)

I very much doubt it will get a re-release in the collectors packaging. Same for the other Seasons too as that is the ‘limited edition’ part.
I ended up getting mine on eBay. The most expensive Blurays ever.

I and others on this Site have emailled BBC and were pretty much told same thing. “No plans”.

I do expect a re-release either as complete Doctor sets or the sets in normal bluray cases at some point though for the UK at least.

Season 12 is region free from USA if you are still after the discs.

They might keep quiet until the steelbook re-releases are near their end so not to jeopardise their sales. Although the steelbooks themselves are the reason to double dip.

I wonder if we will get Season 26 (rumoured) trailer by end of this month? Or will we have to wait til just before Season 23 is released.

    • James

      August 8th, 2019 - 2:17pm

Most likely Season 26 trailer will be end of September as it is usually announced 3 months before release and 26 is rumoured for December release.

    • James

      August 8th, 2019 - 2:19pm

In regards to the new series being released as part of the collection, i sincerely hope so too. While there are good bonus features on some of the sets, i would love to see these expanded upon.
Ideal world would see the full length confidential episodes included and would love to see episode specific documentaries such as on the majority of the dvd/bluray releases of classic series stories. Get all the cast back for interviews for these docs and also some stuff like Writers Room features on the blurays could be done for each series also.

    • dazzleshell

      August 8th, 2019 - 2:29pm

I’d love to watch Behind the Sofa with the main cast and say RTD and Moffat. That probably would make me triple dip.

If you haven’t done it yet, RTD and Katy Manning’s commentary for Death of the Doctor is great to listen to on the Season 10 set.

Be really interesting if they could get Eccleston to do a full on interview too. Even put him and RTD in same room to have it out.

I don’t think New Series will be in the Collection until the classics are finished. Which is fine for me. As a minor, I do not have the means to regularly spend 40-50 pounds on these sets. However when I’m older (I’d be 24 if they finish by 2028 (which the Doctor Who guide predicts)) I’d be able to buy the New Series sets as they come out.

    • Flo

      August 13th, 2019 - 3:13pm

Yeah The NEW who won’t be part of it as we already have the dvd edition/ Blu-ray regular edition/ Blu-ray Doctor box set edition/ steelbook edition…
People won’t buy 5 times the same content even if the packaging changes…
If they include TORCHWOOD I would be so happy Never bought the show on Blu-ray.

    • Anonymous

      August 13th, 2019 - 5:51pm

I wish they’d do steelbooks for Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures

    • Bushboy

      August 13th, 2019 - 11:42pm

I would quite happily shell out for the new series in the collection range even though I already own them on Blu-ray.
After all what’s the point of a “collection” if it’s incomplete?
Also the packaging does use the new series logo and classic Who and new Who are now supposed to be marketed as the same thing so why not?

    • Gordon

      August 14th, 2019 - 9:42am

There is a load of stuff that didn’t make the new series box sets. There also is a lot of scope for new extras to match the classic series (proper making of, commentaries for stories that don’t have, Matthew sweet interviews, behind the sofa etc) and considering it probably won’t get touched until the classic range is done in about 2024-25 some of the episodes will be 20 years old and ripe for a remaster. The episodes from s1-4 are in the wrong speed so it would give a chance to get the episodes right finally

    • James

      August 14th, 2019 - 2:41pm

      Agreed Gordon.
Like the Series 1 deleted scenes. The proper version of the Children In Need special. Full editions of Doctor Who Confidential. And in depth documentaries for each story. For these extras i would buy again in the Collection format

    • Judooning

      August 14th, 2019 - 3:29pm

Gordon, What do you mean by the episodes are in the wrong speed?

    • The Flying Shark

      August 14th, 2019 - 7:15pm

Because of the upscaling process, episodes from Series 1-4 run about four minutes longer on Blu-Ray than DVD, I don’t know the technical details myself but it’s meant to be about a slower frame rate or something.

    • James

      August 16th, 2019 - 2:31pm

Yeah instead of 25 frames per second there is only 24 so it is stretched out slightly which results in the slightly longer running time. Most of the epiosdes are only 2-3 minutes longer because of this

    • David

      August 16th, 2019 - 3:23pm

I completely agree with Gordon, so much scope for brand new extras for the 2005 and onwards era of the show, technical specs can be sorted as well lots of good work could come out if it! I’d love a behind the sofa of the doctors daughter with peter Georgia and David Tennant or an audio commentary on it.
Russell T Davies did a great commentary with Kat manning on death of the doctor I feel we need more of those too for the SJA if they were ever to get a special collection treatment too.

I stopped buying the box sets after season 18 and won’t buy any more. Apart from the 11, 22 and 26 seasons so to have a box set for every doctor. The seasons in B/N I’d like to have them all. According to you when will they be released? The first season certainly on the 60th anniversary and a season of Troughton for the 100th birthday I think.

I understand that. I’ve waited years for the classics to come out on Blu-ray so I didn’t waste money on dvd. I will buy the complete collection and the steelbook for the new Who and then I’m done. Classic will never make it in 4K anyway and series 1/Specials New Who would be horrible.

    July 19th, 2019 - 11:47pm

I know this has been discussed potentially earlier, but what are people’s predictions for the next boxsets? Obviously it looks almost certain S26 will be a Christmas release, but I’m thinking for 2020:
Season 11 Season 14 or 17, Season 20 and Season 24 not in that order though.

    • Andrew R

      July 21st, 2019 - 3:00am

I think it’s highly likely that we’ll get a Pertwee and a Tom Baker season per year given the number of seasons each starred in. For both of them, I would agree that seasons 11 and 17 seem likely because from what I’ve read footage has been shot for season 17 and season 11 only has one episode that would need to be colorized. I very much hope that season 6 gets released too for the reason that Prowl stated. It may make sense since they chose to release season 10 on Pertwee’s birthday. Having potentially just released a McCoy season, I feel like they might release season 10 before season 24.

      I wouldn’t mind having season 14 or season 7 on blu-ray either.

    • Prowl

      July 21st, 2019 - 8:26am

I’m also hopeful that we will get Season 7 sooner than later, but I know that extensive work needs to be done on some of it, especially Ambassadors. I figure the next Tom set will be 17 and the next Pertwee will be 11, just not sure how much trouble they are having trying to colorize episode one of Dinos, I know the DVD version didn’t go too well, and was added just as an extra.

    • David

      July 21st, 2019 - 11:30am

I was tempted to buy Spearhead from Space in Blu ray the other day as I never picked it up, but with Season 7 in mind I held off, that story from what I’ve seen looked great. But the rest of the season will be tricky yes. Season 6 would be once again very fitting for Patrick’s Birthday next year so that would be great!
Just a question of when they break into the 60s sets. Colin’s remaining season will probably be out the year after. With the remaining MCCoy and Davison sets mixed throughout the coming years. I can see them maybe waiting until 2023 for season 20 even though i’d Love to see it sooner.

    • Pete X

      July 21st, 2019 - 8:44pm

      With the likely release of S26 at the end of the year there will be;

      6 black and white/60’s,
      4 Pertwee,
      5 Tom Baker, and
      5 80’s

As they are releasing 4 a year, I reckon that’s more or less one from each category each year. I’m not too interested about what will be released next, but more which story from each season is going to be CGI’d. Fingers crossed for Creature from the Pit.

If there is a release of S6 to tie in with PT’s centenary, it will be interesting to see what is done with the Space Pirates as it may indicate what will happen with S3 where there are (currently) missing episodes with no telesnaps.

    • Prowl

      July 21st, 2019 - 11:28pm

I’m also curious which stories will get the CGI treatment. I was disappointed with the CGI in Planet of the Daleks, I usually prefer the new effects in stories, but in Planets I think I prefer the original effects or am even either way.

    • James

      July 22nd, 2019 - 10:35am

My guess is definitely season 11 next year. Season 14 probably for Tom as we haven’t got any Leela on bluray yet and we already have some Romana (also they can do 17 the year after). I think season 6 is a given as the producers have said the 60s sets won’t be done last. As we get a colin set and most likely a Sylvester set this year i think we are guaranteed a davison set next year. I think this will be season 20 as Chris Chapman said earlier this year he had done a documentary for a historic set and a picture of 4 TARDIS teapots. 4 TARDISes… The Five Doctors possibly?

    • Pete X

      July 22nd, 2019 - 5:19pm

If S6, rather than The Faceless Ones, is tied in with PT’s centenary then, off the top of my head, that would be a March release, which we should find out about in December, 13/14 weeks ahead of release.

If you are interested; there is an interview with Rob Ritchie, animator of the PotD CGI and on the S4 animations, on last night’s Radio Free Skaro (#698) – http://www.radiofreeskaro.com/

    • James

      July 22nd, 2019 - 11:13pm

It is possible we will get Faceless Ones and Season 6 both in March a few weeks apart although I think it’s more likely that Season 6 will be in the second half of the year and we’ll get a Tom Baker season (most likely either 14 or 17) in March.

Absolutely adore these sets so far! Hopefully another run of season 12 will come in time but the seasons lined up in a row look great on the shelf! If they were to do a TV Movie and Wilderness Years set I have been thinking about all the wonderful content that it could contain. Of course with copyright and licensing not everything in this list would be possible for inclusion however it is everything I have been able to source of who media produced from 1900 to 2004. Can anyone else think of anything that would go great in the set that I may have missed?

Thats an impressive list of stuff. Can,t bear to watch the Room 101 episode. I couldn,t believe how easily Paul Merton allowed it to go in, but having found out he hates Doctor who comes as little surprise now. One things for sure, it wouldn,t have happened on Frank Skinners watch, had he been fronting the programme then.

Thanks The ergon. Sourced from several blogs, one of babelcolour’s videos, the BBC site and a selection of content I have watched several times over out of fascination for the wilderness years regarding what was and what could have been. Yes that 101 episode is best left behind haha! It’s great that Grade was able to admit he liked the new series when it returned though!

I had put together a rough list of what I thought would make a great Wilderness boxset, which is:

      Disc One (30th Anniversary Stuff)
More than 30 Years in the TARDIS
      Dimensions in Time
      DVD Special Features
Disc Two (Doctor who night on BBC2 cause why not)
      Doctor Who Night
Disc Three (TV movie disc 1)
      TV Movie (re-scanned)
      Night of the Doctor
      DVD Special Features
Disc Four (TV Movie Disc 2)
TV Movie (alternate cut, again why not!)
      Curse of the Fatal Death
      New Documentaries/McGann Interview
      Disc Five (Webcasts)
      Real Time
      Death Come to Time
      Shada Webcast
      Interweb of Fear
      Disc Six (Shalka)
      Scream of the Shalka
      DVD Special Features

Like you said, who knows what can be cleared. It is very possible Dimensions in Time will never get negotiated on. But I think a set that shows what was going on with the show when it was off the air for 15 odd years would really round out the blu-ray shelves. Plus Imd love a rescanned TV movie, as unlikely as it may be!

Thanks for sharing that Kenny! Love the idea of having an alternate cut of the TV movie. I saw on YouTube at one point an alternate opening that was taken from a rough cut copy of the film. The full rough cut is nowhere to be found online from what I have seen so far but It would be great to see the process of making the film. After all there were many changes from the first cut. Hopefully one day it will surface!

    • Kenny

      July 18th, 2019 - 6:51pm

Yea the alternate cut of the TV movie is a definite wish list thing. Something Imd be interested in, as I wonder if some of the issues the movie has could be fixed in editing. Probably not (chances are an alternate cut could end up being a clunkier version of a already clunky movie), but why not give it a go!

I think what I’d really like is the set having each disc explore an element of the wilderness. The first real activity was the More than 30 Years doc and Dimensions in Time. So you build a disc around that, and maybe a new doc about the Dark Dimension project that fell apart.

Then obviously the next big event was the TV movie, which I think was a big enough sea change for the show that it warrants two discs (plus McGann obviously gets the cover of the set)

Then you grab anything from that era like the Doctor Who Night or Curse of the Fatal Death. Just a lot of that weird stuff that came out when the show was off of TV but not forgotten, and there is a whole disc of goodies.

Then you end the set with the webcast era, and those original 3 can obviously take up their own disc (as they were designed to not be too much video space), and then Shalka closes out the set.

Who knows if this will happen or if it would ever be as comprehensive, but I would love to see it. If they could somehow get into Universal’s vaults and get the TV movie’s original elements and rescan them? Definitely a must buy for that alone.

    • Doctor Who Merchandise Collector

      July 18th, 2019 - 7:18pm

That sounds like the best idea for the disc structures. It only seems fair McGann get to appear on a cover especially as the design would look stunning if they go anything by the Blu Ray release of the movie for the montage. I always hope that in some archives of the production companies are various cuts of who stories and hope that The BBC/ Universal/ Fox still have the pre air screeners tucked away somewhere. I did think a PDF of The Dark Dimension could be nice for production documents as it has been put online before but unfortunately not in an official capacity. Although saying that, have you seen the fan made animation of The Dark Dimension on YouTube? Not a bad attempt, really enjoyable and great to see an unmade story in some form.

    • Kenny

      July 19th, 2019 - 2:24am

I saw part of the Dark Dimension animation, but I am hard to please with fan productions. I struggle with amateur acting, and voice acting. I also have worked i TV as an editor and so I think I am more critical than others may be. At the very least it hurts my ability to enjoy such things.

Seeing as how the U.S. didn’t get the Blu-ray option for Paul, it’s not impossible that we would not receive a matching release at some point and seeing as how the BBC has went above and beyond by adding not only the original extras but newly filmed extras for all these new re releases, I for one wouldn’t at all be surprised if we were gifted with a little something extra special for The Doctor with only one outing…well Two if you count the regeneration.

I do think “the Collection” will only cover seasons 1-26. Everything after that are new phases for the series. Some may have a different opinion to that, but other than the TVM, everything post 2004 is already well catered for

I remeber reading somewhere that the producer of ‘The Collection’ range, he wants to include a new transfer of The TV Movie and its extras to Season 26 (similar to the inclusion of ‘K-9 and Company: A Girls Best Friend’ on the 18th Season set) and that they had interest in trying to do more of ‘The Collection’ range to cover New Who too.

Does anybody know of a reliable retailer to ship these box sets to Australia? Unfortunately the Australian editions now come out with inferior packaging, and are released several months later. Amazon UK and Zoom won’t ship to Australia, and Zavvi are terrible. I just received the season 10 box set from Zavvi and it was so badly packaged that the box had been all beaten up in transit. I had the same problem when I ordered season 19 from Zavvi; while I got a refund eventually, it took over a month of chasing them up and them making it really difficult for me to return it and request the refund.

Due to the way the blu-rays are swapping some of the original dvd special features about between sets, I think it’s worth keeping hold of the original DVDs for this features that are absent.

I just trade mine in at CEX at the moment. Try to sell before they officially announce next set to maximise the return and use that money off future sets. So Season 26 was sold a while ago.
      And rumours on here help.

I keep the old booklets as CEX don’t care about them. I trim them so they fit into Season box nicely.

All dvd features will eventually appear in the Season sets (except the Jim’ll Fix It feature with Colin Baker for obvious reasons).

I sold mine in cex aswell. Might not get as much as selling elsewhere but as Ebay has been flooded with dvd versions of the blu-ray releases you can guarantee a sale. As long as you’ve looked after them.

Someone mentioned with the ‘Jim’ll Fix It’ short with Colin and the Sontarans on The DVD release of The Two Doctors, was hoping that there would be a way to save it and just cut anything with Jimmy Saville out. Easy to Edit out the introduction from that vile man, and his appearance at the end, it is still an enjoyable litttle minisode of Who.

MIKSK89. I think the BBC removed it completely on newer issues of The Two Doctors DVD.

Will be happy if they can do what you say though. Just show the short and remove the vile man from it.

    • Andrew R

      July 10th, 2019 - 5:46pm

I hope you’re right, Anonymous. In my opinion, they’re pretty strong seasons for the most part. It would be especially nice since the War Games and the Invasion are so high priced in the US. I guess that would also mean that they would need to animate Space Pirates before then.

    • Anonymous

      July 10th, 2019 - 6:03pm

They could do the Space Pirates after the faceless ones and release it in 2021, but release it first on the collection set for season 6 which could come out around late 2020, perhaps December before it’s separate standard release in early 2021

    • The Flying Shark

      July 10th, 2019 - 7:02pm

They’re almost meant to have done a shoot in Aldbourne for a Season 8 release, but I doubt this will be soon as Mind of Evil is still meant to be quite poor colour wise.

      July 11th, 2019 - 5:33am

They’re talking about the 2020 releases. S26 is rumoured for Christmas 2019.

    • Robert Sienicki

      July 11th, 2019 - 9:34am

Season 6? Interesting. They would have to animate probably all six episodes of “The Space Pirates” like they are doing with “The Faceless Ones”, but I feel like there wasn’t enough time to do those two stories. Season 20 (for “Five Doctors) and Season 17 (for “City of Death”) would be my picks, but let’s be honest – I will order each and every one of those sets, no matter which season they do next.

    • dazzleshell

      July 11th, 2019 - 1:38pm

They might not animate the Space Pirates.
Episode 2 exists but there are no telesnaps for the rest so would be difficult. Or they could go all out and allow the animators to interpretate it their own way.

I hope that they will at least include a disc for the story even if it just includes the soundtrack with linking narration to set the scene like some of the old vhs did. And some ‘new’ features to support it. So that the Season is complete.

    • Gordon

      July 11th, 2019 - 11:38pm

@the flying shark They haven’t done a season 8 shoot in auldborne. Producer Chris chapman was in auldborne on his own free time looking for inspiration for the big finish he was working on at the time. Auldborne is also an hour away from his house

    • Kenny

      July 12th, 2019 - 5:11am

Oh so 26 is still in the works for the end of this year (according to rumors). Neat. I would say if 6 is likely to be released next year they aren’t animating Space Pirates. Which is a shame. I suppose they could still have it in the works, but I find it unlikely (based on their animation rate so far) that they’d animate all the episodes in time for a 2020 release, not with Faceless Ones still in the works. Unless they release it animated first with the boxset, then solo. Again, I find it unlikely, which is unfortunate.

    • James

      July 12th, 2019 - 10:14am

Yeah I think we will get Season 6, but I don’t think Space Pirates will be animated. As long as there is a good reconstruction, I am fine with that.

    • Anonymous

      July 13th, 2019 - 12:53pm

It’s amazing that people are still pushing this. Nobody has ruled out The Space Pirates, that is entirely fan speculation.

Marco Polo and The Crusade have however been ruled out, so Seasons 1 or 2 make vastly more sense if something from the 60s had to be done.

    • Anonymous

      July 13th, 2019 - 1:00pm

On another note, given their “creative” take on The Macra Terror a lack of telesnaps is not going to be an obstacle.

    • James

      July 13th, 2019 - 5:31pm

While it hasn’t been ruled out there are 18 stories still missing some episodes. And at the current rate of 1 per year we would be waiting 18 years for all episodes to be animated. The bluray range is not going to wait for 10-18 years to release Seasons 1-6 so it is much more likely that some stories will not be animated for the bluray sets.
It may be aninated and released individually later but we definitely won’t have animations for every missing ep on the season 1-6 boxsets

    • Anonymous

      July 13th, 2019 - 5:56pm

I don’t expect every story to be animated by the time this range finishes. I just think it is a bit odd to release a season if there is a chance it may get an animation in the near future.

Of course it is entirely possible they have ruled out The Space Pirates internally and have not made that public in which case fair enough, let them carry on. If there’s still a chance, it seems a bit silly to not go for one of the two seasons that are ready to go (Seasons 1 and 2).

    • Robert Sienicki

      July 13th, 2019 - 6:55pm

Well, the ideal would be if they keep animation as one disc only, so you could replace the collection disc with animated once they release it.

    • Gordon

      July 14th, 2019 - 2:29am

I’d imagine space pirates is pretty low down on the list of potential animations. For starters It’s not a well regarded story. It also has no memorable monsters or companion entrances or exits. There is very little hook other than it completes season 6 and going by those involved it has to have a stand alone release first before it gets released in the collection. It’s definitely not a story I see getting done in the next 5-6 years ie the lifespan of the collection. Other stories I can see being more pressing. Especially from seasons 3-5. I can see the collection season 6 having a recon to fill in the gap but with the ability to swap it out for the animation if and when the time comes.

    • Anonymous

      July 14th, 2019 - 7:53am

I hope they can just release a separate disc in a different release to it’s general release (if it ever gets one) in the style of a collection disc so that anyone who wants to swap out the disc, can do that
