I live in France and I sent an email two days ago, still no response yet, but it’s worth a try. And it would be very disappointing if the BBC sent replacements only to UK/US residents, considering I had to pay more with the shipping and taxes.
Does anybody know what was the stance of the BBC on replacement in foreign countries for the 50th anniversary set? Thanks.

Well, it’s back up to £49.99 on Amazon and sold out everywhere else. Given how fast it’s sold though, it would be silly of BBC worldwide to not do another batch.

Hope I’m not being super-thick here, but how on Earth am I supposed to get to the PDF materials on this set? My PlayStation 3 can’t find them, nor can the computers I’ve tried (which have only got DVD drives, admittedly). Is there something you have to do, or do I need a computer with a Blu-ray drive, or is it another fault with the discs? I’ve already requested replacements for the other problems, and I thought I’d look at the PDF’s while I waited for them to arrive. No chance. What can I do?

    • Rob W

      July 4th, 2018 - 1:21pm

There seems to be a fault with the new CGI on Disc 5, the first glimpse of the Sky Striker looks like the original effects to me…

    • Jesse

      July 5th, 2018 - 4:36am

“The Sontaran Experiment” (Disc 3), Part One has audio issues. “The Revenge of Cybermen” (Disc 5) has several errors. Michael Wisher’s name had a spelling mistake in the credits (Part One). The subsequent credits briefly overlaps with Ian Marter’s name. Some CGI effects were missing. One frame was mislaid near the ending of Part Four.

All these errors are present in both the UK and the US sets. There is, however, one more error that is only on the US set and it is nearly 17 seconds of missing subtitles in Part Four of “The Revenge of the Cybermen”.

    • Rob W

      July 5th, 2018 - 8:19am

Surely the mistake with the credits was always there?

    • Omega63

      July 5th, 2018 - 11:29am

No, they recreated the credits from scratch using the clean sequence and matching to the original broadcast versions. That way it will be true HD, with no pixelation on the font etc (as it would be rendered in 1080p), whereas upscaling the original versions would be like rendering a 576p font in 1080p, and wouldn’t look great.

    • Rob W

      July 5th, 2018 - 3:01pm

      Thanks for the information Omega63.

    • MIKK89

      July 5th, 2018 - 3:03pm

Now, whilst credits being misspelled is accurate, it cant be right that they recreated the titles just for all the stories as the opening titles for Ark in Space are in a slightly Darker Shade than the ones for the other 4

    • Rob W

      July 5th, 2018 - 8:06pm

There’s an audio click/pop about 7 minutes 22 seconds into episode 2 of The Ark In Space too…

So much for superior quality. Its scant consolation for those who preordered these. They seem rushed out without screening checks for deficiencies. But the ergon the dvd range was hardly fault free either. The daemons had missing frames. The invisible enemy had authoring issues. Revelation of the Daleks has issues effecting some players. The original three doctors had an issue. Greatest show had issues effecting some players. The us release of moon base had issues and even the dvd version of Shada last year was wrongly pillarboxed. These are only some of them And despite all that fans still continued to buy the releases. The people doing quality control have seriously failed this release but at least it means they will certainly up the quality control for future releases. It’s my hope that the restoration team might get check discs in future. They know the episodes more than most and would be able to spot most errors before release

    • Mr Pessimistic

      July 3rd, 2018 - 6:28pm

However, for a hyped up first season release on Blu-ray…it’s a bit of an embarrassment to be fair. Glad I didn’t get hyped up about the release. Glad I didn’t buy it.

    • Gordon

      July 3rd, 2018 - 8:56pm

It’s unfortunate and disappointing that it had to happen to the first release but it’s hardly humiliating. The other 90 percent of this release has been highly praised. It’s not like they denied there was a problem. They announced replacement discs less than 48 hours after the uk release. It shows a serious commitment to the sets by announcing it that quick and bodes well for the future if errors do turn up. It’s hardly the first blu ray set to have issues at release date. Deadwood had massive audio issues and paramount denied there was an issue at first before eventuallycaving months later and did replacements (now that’s embarrassing). Twin peaks had missing frames on its bonus disc. The whole of X files season 8 had to be replaced as the picture filter was too dark. Star Trek next generation season 1 audio was missing and replacements had to be made. Doesn’t matter how hyped or important a release errors can happen in any release

    • THE ERGON

      July 4th, 2018 - 12:29am

Errors should be checked before despatch. Nobodys perfect but BBC worldwide and others have a duty to put customers first which they are not doing. The size ratio alone put me off ordering. Now I know that this was the aspect that was seen originally but the bars on modern day screens is offputting but there aren,t Tvs that can,t accommodate this problem at present and Bluray isn,t a modern format. I have nothing against the upgrade in terms of quality and although this might be as far as Doctor Who can go at present, the DVD range why,ll not faultless is a suffice medium if slightly inferior to Blu-Ray. I hope they do get things right and i might be tempted to purchase in the future even if they have to re-release as Special Edition, as it stands no thankyou despite the Extras. Fans will buy regardless and the idea is popular but becoming Devils Advocate is not going to sway certain peoples opinion. Its just not good enough. Its not humiliating for BBC Worldwide so much as long as the money keeps coming in

The UK release date was put back and I think they knew there was a problem as the U.S. sets released 29 June have the same or simillar issues. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Australian/NZ release is put back further or if it too has the same issue. My copy goes back to HMV who have (yet) to acknowledge my email. The word that blocked your comment was “TV”, that was a keyword to stop people linking to an embedded video of the leaked scene which several people tried to do in the merchandise comments, so you see it was never anything to do with what you said

PS “Booboo” also a moderation word to stop people impersonating me

Just wondering if anyone has heard of/ever bought from a company called Ivycorp.com
They have the Season 12 Blu-ray boxset for £24.95 with free shipping which is considerably cheaper than anywhere else but I’m worried it’s too good to be true seeing as the price is so different and I, myself, have never heard of the company.

Not wishing to confuse or step on toes. the best place to ask for replacement discs is [email protected]

This is the Address used for all previous DvD correction issues in the past, and also the people who despatched any discs, when they were offered.

It would be a shame,if the right department didnt get enough emails, to make the BBC consider a replacement.

The sound issue on Sontaran Experiment is very noticeable when watching, but startlingly so,when episode 2 comes on.

Add to that some missing PDF material and the Revenge flash frames at the end. oh its the Walls pdfs missing, which could of course go on a corrected Disc or an alternate Box set. Sontaran Experiment sound, can not.

I’ve sent emails to both, but the one you’ve suggested comes back with a horribly lengthy automated replay that follows:

Just asking about replacement discs, how does the process work

    • Gordon

      July 2nd, 2018 - 11:43pm

If they end up doing replacement discs they will give a free address to send the discs away and you send it off with a note of your address and why you are sending it off and then you will get a replacement 4-6 weeks down the line. That was what happened with the 50th aniversary version of day of the doctor.

The Invisible Enemy replacement DVD was sent with a free copy of The Hand Of Fear DVD. I’ve emailed HMV about this but it’s anyone!s guess whether this will be sorted out. The release date was put back and the U.S. set had the same problem too.

I know the audio fault for the Sontaran Experiment has been brought up here, but there are also a couple of faults on Revenge of the Cybermen.

On Part 1 Michael Wisher’s credit is misspelled as “Michael Wiaher” and on the cut between the final two shots of Part 4 it appears the final few frames of the penultimate shot overlap with the first few frames of the final shot, creating a brief, but very distracting, flicker between the shots.

If we want to avoid fault-free sets in the future I would raise all three of these issues in a polite email to this address: [email protected]

Seems I was wise not buying this blu-ray. It’s just not good enough if there are noticeable faults on a couple of discs. I just couldn’t bring myself or convince myself with parting with my hard earned cash. I already have this season on DVDs. With most of the extra’s also replicated from the DVDs on this blu-ray, it felt like I’d be parting with my hard earned on the same material only this time only looking a bit nicer, and a handful of new extra’s thrown in to make it not feel you’re double dipping.

Heard rumours that we might be getting seasons 18 and 19 next. Christopher bidmed mentioned on twitter that he is doing a “video interview” about meglos next week. Could possibly be for twitch though seeing as that story isn’t far off. Janet fielding mentioned doing something secret for the bbc last week and Michael Cochrane said at a convention he just met up with Peter Janet and Sarah at the locations of black orchid and recorded something. Seems like they might not be far off.

I don’t think the Meglos video interwiew will be for twitch since I think they said they recorded all 7 pre-shows at the same time.

They need to sort out the faults on the Season 12 box set first, before they rush about, getting ahead of themselves preparing more season releases. Otherwise more faults await

    • Alex

      July 3rd, 2018 - 12:51pm

I mean, I’m assuming who does the fault of the discs is a different team compared to who decides what to release next.

      July 3rd, 2018 - 3:11pm

The people that plan the sets and do the making ofs isn’t the same people that work at quality control. They can easily have 1 set of people fix the problems while another set of people work on future sets. The next release might not be out till next year. The problems should be fixed way before then. hardly rushing

I just hope they make more of these Season 12 boxsets, and not end up like the 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition boxset where they only made a limited number of them and once there gone, there gone.

They will continue to make more of the limited edition packaging as long as the demand is enough to continue making more.

      its a bit confusing

you always pay the lowest price Amazon have advertised it at between when you ordered it and despatch, people ordering it now are likely to have to pay £49.99 from them

after Trouble with HMV taking payments for my order, cancelled it, and re-ordered through Amazon on Wednesday (back when it was still only £39.99) and I have just received an email saying its been dispatched… so anyone who has pre-ordered should get one soon.

Got through everything in this set. Absolutely brilliant set. A real labour of love by everyone involved. The box is amazing to look at and the tardis flaps inside to show the console is gorgeous. The box looks like it can fit as much as 10-11 discs so having larger seasons shouldn’t be an issue. The tom audio navigations intros was a nice touch. Even though not as good as spearhead the visual quality is a visible step up over the original dvd’s. The audio is superb as it’s in hd audio (bar 1 issue which wasn’t the fault of Mark Ayres). Loved the new cgi in revenge. The behind the sofas are a good watch but some of them could be a bit shorter and maybe a change of guests would keep the concept fresh. The 2 new making ofs are pretty good but I preferred the expanded revenge making of better as I felt the stories told Was more intresting. The sontaran making of though good felt like I’d heard majority of the stories before. The tom bakers years was a fun watch and good to have. The robot read through was good but I struggled with the last quarter of hour as it was silence. The Keith miller audio is sublime and very amazing to hear them talk about Peter capaldi in 1975. The genesis omnibus is enjoyable but no way does it replace the original. The doctor who times is a well made nostalgiafest for those that lived through 74/75. Sadly it seems there won’t be another release going by how difficult clearance was for this even though it hints at the end of more. Clocks is just 6 minutes of clocks. Finally the centrepiece of the new extras the tom baker interview. Well put questions and answers and matthew sweet makes a great host. It also has a lot of extras ported over. All of the extras are uncut bar the robot making of and the bred for war which has slight cuts to remove jimmy savile references.

Sadly it isn’t a perfect set. The left audio in sontaran experiment is out of sync. It more effects those that have surround speakers. It does sound tinny in my tv speakers but still very listenable. Some may not even notice the issue. Hopefully replacement discs will be made but for me it won’t be the end of the world if not. There are also some subtitle errors but that’s minor. Despite that it’s still a fantastic release. Hopefully we will get another release soon

May I ask about the sontaran experiment audio, how out of sync was it and is there similar problems on anyone’s sets
Also what was the audio issue you mentioned at the beginning

    • Gordon

      July 1st, 2018 - 10:38pm

It’s enough to notice the sound isn’t quite right but not enough to cause me any issue. Those with surround speakers would probably be able to elibrate on it better

    • Gordon

      July 1st, 2018 - 10:39pm

And the sontaran audio issue was the issue I referred to at the start

      Hi,

Do we know why there were no VT clocks for Genesis in that compilation? Hardly essential but just curious.
I have a surround set up but although TSE sounded tinny, I didn’t think it was atrocious either.
I totally agree with your review – an absolutely sublime set

Yes the left audio is out of sync however it’s more noticeable with soround speakers. If you use normal built in speakers to your tv its less noticeable. It sounds tinny but is still very listenable. To be honest if I didn’t know about the issue I wouldn’t have noticed. Hopefully replacement discs will be made

    • Michael

      June 30th, 2018 - 9:20pm

Yes. The left channel is ‘out of phase’. On my set up it sounds a little tinny and like a poor attempt at adding stereo. It’s not terrible though. I own lots of archive tv with poorer sound than this.
