June 30th, 2018 - 12:02amSo is this already becoming hard to get? Since it’s sold out in many places and has gone up in price on Amazon
Whowhowho
June 30th, 2018 - 1:48amNot at all. From what I’ve seen it’s only the bigger DVD stores like hmv and zoom that have sold out. You can buy from zavi, base.com for £39 which is little cheaper than the Amazon uprising price.
Anonymous
June 30th, 2018 - 2:37amAnd given how fast it’s selling, and that it’s part of a (potential) collection, it probably won’t be a one and done print run like the 50th set
When The Doctor Was Me
June 29th, 2018 - 9:29pmNow i’ve seen the quality of the item i want to order, but ita sold out everywhere but amazing and thats increased to £48! Will it drop by Monday?
Grant
June 30th, 2018 - 12:09amTo be honest, I wouldn’t wait for it to drop because there is a good chance it won’t. Get it on Amazon for that price while you can. It could end up being the same as the 50th Blu Ray and that’s a ba***rd to get new

June 26th, 2018 - 11:05amYep, mines just arrived from Zoom too! Nearly a week early…hurrah!

June 27th, 2018 - 9:32pmMine has arrived as well
I’m really impressed with the packaging, when I opened the compartment that holds the booklet I was amazed to see the Doctors console and the flaps had roundels. I imagine a lot of fans will be scanning it to print out as a diorama for their figures.
Its a cracking set

June 23rd, 2018 - 1:10pmI worry these episodes will look no different from the dvd in quality
They have been remastered but upscaled also

June 23rd, 2018 - 1:39pmThere are a fair few people impressed with the blu ray release stateside

June 23rd, 2018 - 7:46pmMy main problem is that with 4:3 you get half the picture, Most is lost with the bars on the side, now don’t get me wrong, I like my Episodes in 4:3 and not cropped. But I fear there will be very little difference in quality
I still bought it though
Mr Pessimistic
June 23rd, 2018 - 9:45pmThere are several reasons why I’m not buying this. The original DVD releases of Season 12 are absolutely fine and have more than adequate restoration, plus enough extra’s that satisfy my appetite. Also I already own these stories on a disc…It’s called DVD. For a programme that was hardly ever made in HD in the 20th century seems a stretch for Blu-ray. Yes, I’m sure it will look nice, but really, is it worth it. But fans will continually buy the same material over and over, especially when the BBC wave a carrot of ‘new’ extra features.
Gordon
June 23rd, 2018 - 10:05pmBut that’s how it was broadcast in 1974/5. It would be weird and wrong in widescreen
Gordon
June 24th, 2018 - 9:12amIf you are happy with your original releases mr pessimistic that’s fine. However there is plenty of good reasons for releasing on blu ray. dvds are a very compressed medium visually and audibly. Plus some of those dvd restorations are over 10 years old. Restoration Techniques have improved massively since then. You have a lot less compression on blu ray and the audio will be in hd. The restoration team have said the results are as good as the original pal masters at the bbc. We are talking about 20-25 percent jump over the dvd. Not a massive jump admittedly but still a jump. These box sets are the definite releases and the people that work on them know there won’t be another go around on physical media with them after this. This is by admitance of the restoration team the last roll of the dice for dr who on disc.

June 23rd, 2018 - 3:56pmIf it’s an Xbox One from the UK or Australia, and if the discs for the Australian release are locked to Region B, they’ll work.
Not sure if the American release is locked to Region A or if it has both Region A and B coding though.
Gordon
June 23rd, 2018 - 4:01pmThe discs are region free
the4thdoc42
June 22nd, 2018 - 10:04amA note to any US buyers (not sure if this applies to Australia/NZ release as well) apparently they couldn’t get a music clearance for something in the Doctor Who Times documentary so it was pulled from the US set. If thats somthing you’re intrested in, you should probably grab the UK version.
Gordon
June 22nd, 2018 - 11:34amIt was more to do with the pre orders in the us not being high enough that they couldn’t afford to clear the music for the release in North America according to Steve Roberts.
There has also been an issue with subtitles missing and wrong on 1 of the discs but hopefully it will be sorted for the uk release.
Lastly and most importantly there has been an issue with the audio of sontaran experiment part 1. The audio seems a bit off to some. Can’t say I noticed but enough people reported it that I do believe there is an issue with it. Mark Ayres and Steve Roberts have been scrambling yesterday to figure out what’s wrong with it. Have a listen: https://vimeo.com/276382384/08b5bbfa87
the4thdoc42
June 22nd, 2018 - 11:17pmLink isn’t working for me, what was the issue?
Gordon
June 23rd, 2018 - 1:18amMust have been deleted. Some have said it’s only noticeable if you are actively searching for it. This is how Steve Roberts describes it:
The problem is a polarity reversal of one channel of the audio. When one speaker cone is pushing out, the other is pulling in. Instead of centring the audio midway between the speakers, it throws it completely out into wide stereo. It might sound acceptable on a TV depending on your setup, but if you try to listen on headphones, it will probably make you feel ill (I’m not kidding).
Because surround information is encoded as phase differences, if you listen on a surround setup, all of the sound will come from the rear speakers. If you try to mitigate this by doing something like switching your system to All Speaker Mono, you’ll get silence, because the amplifier adds together the left and right channels to create a mono channel before sending it out to each speaker. Because the two channels are completely out of phase, adding the two together completely cancels out the signal, producing silence. There is no good way to fix this, save listening in stereo mode and unplugging your left hand speaker and moving your right hand speaker to be in front of the TV. Or swapping the speaker connections over on the back of one speaker in order to invert the existing inversion back to normal.
Leon Kerr
June 29th, 2018 - 6:59pmGordon, Ed Stradling says the clearance fees for the clips in DW Times meant it was never going to have a chance at being on the US set, only UK and Aus. Seems like Steve is half right.
Mr Pessimistic
June 21st, 2018 - 7:52pmSurely it isn’t too much to ask, but why isn’t the story titles on each disc. I know we can tell which story it is from the pictures on the disc. But surely ‘Genesis of the Daleks’ is a more worthy disc title than simply ‘Disc 4’ !
Bushboy.
June 24th, 2018 - 8:38amI agree. I have the same problem with The Complete Series Ten set. I have to take a random guess and try to remember which episodes are on which disc. Also why didn’t they that release over until after Christmas so Twice Upon A Time could have been included?
Gordon
June 24th, 2018 - 9:25amIt still might be on there. The titles appear on the us discs. It may have changed since this artwork was completed. Don’t write it off yet.

June 21st, 2018 - 4:39pmThis is a massive improvement all around! Every episode is at least 20-25% better visually, this set is worth every cent…I purchased 2 copies and am getting rid of the DVDs

June 21st, 2018 - 1:40pmThe date has been added back onto the listing on Amazon UK’s site for next Monday so hopefully this means there’s no more delays.

June 20th, 2018 - 5:41pmI got the American version today, I live in the UK, it looks really good. The picture quality is an improvement on the dvd.

June 16th, 2018 - 10:58amWell the us release hasn’t been delayed. Some in the us have had shipping notifications. Has to be a packaging issue in the uk then
booboo
June 16th, 2018 - 11:03amI would like to think its because they had to significantly up the production, I would imagine they only want to do a one off run
Anonymous
June 16th, 2018 - 2:56pmI mean, it could still be because of increased demand, right? Particularly because of the different packaging? I’m from Region 1, but I refused to buy the Region 1 version when the UK Packaging is so much better, so bought from Region 2 instead. Maybe many others have done the same? Leading to increased Region 2 sales and decreased Region 1 sales?
Kirst
June 18th, 2018 - 10:53amWell just had to cancel order as Amazon only told me today that it was delayed and it was for my partners birthday… also today.
But if a poor bloody show. Now got to find something else for him.
He was so looking forward to opening this today
Mr Pessimistic
June 19th, 2018 - 12:44pmI prefer the American packaging. Sturdy plastic case and takes up less room when more come out. Which is surely more appropriate for such a growing collection.
Gordon
June 19th, 2018 - 1:44pmPeter Crocker has mentioned on twitter that the delay is down to authoring issues for the uk discs. I’d rather wait a couple of weeks extra to get a correct version than get it now and it’s faulty. I like the simplistic us design. It saves so much space. If it wasn’t in 60i in the us I would have been tempted to import it
Nicholas Dickens
June 19th, 2018 - 8:01pmYes my friends shipped today I’ve been informed. 🙂

June 16th, 2018 - 7:53amLooks like the dates been moved foward to July 2nd
Phillip
June 15th, 2018 - 4:26amI viewed Genesis of the Daleks in theatres and can say there is a noticable difference between what I saw on the dvd the next day. Definitely not HD but an improvement none the less. I made mental note of very specific scenes and details. I imagine the home media to look slightly better than the projection on screen as well.
the4thdoc42
June 15th, 2018 - 6:23amGood to know it’s noticeably better. Also, according to DWM the 90 minute version (the one that did the rounds in theaters) is HD but unrestored on the set, so unless they did decide to restore the 90 minute version the normal version should look even better 🙂
Gordon
June 15th, 2018 - 7:34amThe version showed in cinema was restored. The version that is on the blu ray is unrestored. The decision to do cinema screenings of the omnibus version was made after everything was delivered. The restoration team felt that the unrestored version would not show off the new remastering so with next to no budget they cut the restored version down to the omnibus length

June 17th, 2018 - 5:33pmAny chances of a release on it’s own, Gordon

June 14th, 2018 - 2:19pmAny news on a digital release for the new versions of these episodes?
Mr Pessimistic
June 14th, 2018 - 9:42pmAny news when Season 12 on blu-ray is getting standard edition packaging?
Gordon
June 14th, 2018 - 11:32pmThe bbc ww/studios enquiry line states There are no plans currently to do Standard packaging in the uk.
As for a digital version the enemy se got a digital release with extras so there is a chance s12 might get a digital release
Gareth Pugh
June 20th, 2018 - 6:38pmMr Pessimistic – Steve Roberts of the Restoration Team (2|entertain/BBC’s go-to team for making the DVD range and now the BluRay sets look great) answered this on Gallifrey Base the other day. It’s quite a long story. Here goes…
It depends on 2 factors – apparently it’s not limited edition in the traditional sense of ‘by implication there is also going to be a standard packaging version coming out as well’ – there may never be a straight plastic box version for UK, or there may be.
And he says it basically depends on 2 interlocking factors. Apparently, for this deluxe card box package there needs to be a minimum print run of 2000 copies each time they want to make a batch – below that it is not so cost effective to do this in smaller runs than it would be to make a generic plastic case edition (which he said could easily be done profitably at runs of 500). Basically, they would make a call at the time there was demand for a further run – (i) is there sufficient demand to make another 2000 (or more) in one go and then (ii) do they predict that those 2000+ would sell through quickly enough to ensure any margins would not get eaten up by warehousing costs for 2|entertain/ BBC before the likes of Amazon etc ordered more of that stock run in over time. If half of them are goIng to hang around so long unbought by retailers, the ‘rent’ paid in keeping these safely stored can tip the balance and mean a smaller cheaper plastic box run becomes the best way of making more copies available. He said that if the demand and likely speed of retailers buying stock made it viable, the future runs of season 12 would be made to the deluxe spec. So it’s not definitely ‘limited edition’ by a pre-set number this time. Hope that makes sense.
Interestingly, he also said that one of the conditions of making this first classic BluRay set in this special packaging format was that they had to commit (to retailers presumably) to making all first runs (at least) of future classic DW BluRay sets in the same format for consistency of shelf (Matt finish card, internal pocket with posh booklet, high walls with a ‘clamshell’ closure) so it looks like we might look forward to a whole range in this style. Hope so!
Philip
June 13th, 2018 - 7:31amWhile it’s good news it’s selling like hot cakes, and bodes well for future sales…we may get it in time for Christmas (currently July 9th)
Gordon
June 13th, 2018 - 11:37amThe us version is still being released on time though so i don’t think selling like hot cakes has any bearing on its delay. Could really be anything. It already got delayed once as the authoring took a lot longer than accepted. Most likely the packaging took longer to mass produce than anticipated I’d take a guess at.
Philip
June 13th, 2018 - 5:01pmPerhaps they underestimated the demand and had to produce sigfificantly more…

June 12th, 2018 - 8:01amCan you reserve a copy of the Infamy of the Zaross vinyl in store at HMV, or will you just have to go on the day and hope you get a copy? Also, are there any copies of Energy of the Daleks left in anybody’s Sainsbury’s stores?

June 6th, 2018 - 7:12pmWould have been better having the diamond Doctor Who logo appropriate for Tom Baker’s era on the box. Not keen on all merchandise having the ‘new’ logo. Classic series should still have a classic series logo.
Gordon
June 6th, 2018 - 8:22pmThere is no classic series though. With the rebranding It’s all under the same umbrella. Classic or new its all the same thing. Series 1 is only a couple of years off being being the same age as season 26 was in 2005 so it makes since to rebrand everything together. Plus for me it doesn’t matter what the logo is. It’s the content that matters
Anonymous
June 11th, 2018 - 4:47pmIf it isn’t two shows, Why is only classic who getting streamed on twitch and not with new who and Why is new who on Iplayer and not classic who. About the Diamond Logo, would be so much more appropriate, It’s a different era of the show
MIKSK89
June 11th, 2018 - 5:09pmThought about that and the argument could be said why not lump classic and new who together on Netflix or IPlayer. It could just be a case of what the are allowed to show, maybe a addition of 2005-2017 Who will be added after on twitch…
booboo
June 11th, 2018 - 5:23pmto be honest its all about worldwide brand recognition moving forward from this point.
in the last few years its been a complete mess and probably contributed to poor sales in many areas
Dav
June 12th, 2018 - 12:01pmYeah, I agree. I think the classic series should have kept its logo or even the ‘classic’ one that was used. the problem with using the ‘current’ one is that once it’s not current it’ll look out of date – which i guess gives an opportunity to sell another repackaged version.
