Doctor Who Power of the Daleks Animation DVD

Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk

Also available to order from www.hmv.com

Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks, the brand new animated version of the much celebrated lost story, is set to be a must buy for every Doctor Who fan with a wealth of extra material available with both the BBC Store and DVD releases.

This highly anticipated adventure will be released on BBC Store on Saturday 5th November, exactly 50 years to the minute after it was first transmitted on BBC One at 5.50pm on Saturday 5th November, 1966, with DVD following on Monday 21st November.

Extra treats fans can look forward to include commentaries and surviving footage, together with a documentary feature which stars the original cast and crew. Other bonus features include a gallery of artwork from the animation, and original shooting script. There’s even a rare chance to hear the original Dalek recordings from the show.

It’s one of the Doctor’s most celebrated adventures and yet no complete film recordings of The Power of the Daleks are known to have survived. The master negatives were destroyed in an archive purge in 1974.

The six half-hour episodes feature the regeneration, or as it was then called ‘renewal’, of First Doctor William Hartnell into Second Doctor Patrick Troughton, as the Time Lord and his companions Polly (Anneke Wills) and Ben (Michael Craze) do battle with the Daleks on the planet Vulcan.

Animator Charles Norton says: ‘It’s been wonderful to have been able to track down so much rare and previously unreleased material and I hope that fans enjoy the excellent package we’ve been able to assemble.’

I found this DVD on this website and ordered it base. Arrived today and I remove cellophane opened DVD case and found a small tear at the bottom of the Booklet cover that comes with this. Now I wish I could get a replacement booklet without any damage. There is no other damage except to the booklet.

if its damaged you need to ask base for a replacement, they may ask you to return the whole thing.

Anyone else think it’s about time they released the crusade? I mean the BBC hold half of the story so it wouldn’t be extreme to animate two episodes…..

Finally got round to watching this and I have to say I was very disappointed with the quality of the animation as a whole
There were a few bits, like some of the backgrounds ./ Daleks that were very good but overall it was very ‘captain pugwash’ to me and the whole cast looked like they had black eyes
Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t expecting Pixar but, considering technological advances these days I was expecting something a little more 2016 than 1963

That said overall I’m glad they’ve done this as it’s favourable to the telesnaps versions (again credit to those who made them as they are in turn better than just the audio)

I will buy whatever they release but, if they are to gain a larger audience, in turn to promote the idea of more animation I do feel the quality needs to improve!

I think the animators need to be given more time. I would think animating further stories should be ones with the odd episode or two still existing.

Finished watching Power of the Daleks and I must say I really enjoyed it. The Daleks are really well animated and totally evil, much more than the current Series. It takes a while to get used to the animation but once you get into the story you get carried away with the excitement. And Troughton as usual is pure magic, let’s hope more missing stories get to same treatment.

I was really surprised how good this looked in color!! It was truly a work of art and a masterpiece. I thought I was going to hate it cause I was thinking since it was originally in black and white that it should be drawn that way too!! Boy, was I wrong!!! Can’t wait to get the BluRay so I can watch it anywhere at anytime!!

The telesnap reconstruction is brilliant. I actually think if I was watching all the stories in order, that is the version I would watch. If I was choosing to watch ‘Power of the Daleks’ as a random story to watch, I would choose the animation.

    • Tim M

      November 20th, 2016 - 9:24pm

The telesnaps reconstruction is the same as the BBC Audio MP3-CD release from 2005. Makes my copy of that cd now redundant.

It’s a very well constructed reconstruction. Anneke Wills narration makes the story flow so much better with the pictures and original vocal performances. A nice extra on disc 2.

    • Tim M

      November 19th, 2016 - 12:57pm

I thought it was brilliant. Some have been critical of the animation, as it seems a bit clunky, especially the human characters. But I like the fact it has a retro feel. Especially considering it’s a story made 50 years ago. I think it’s better viewed in black and white too. I never really understood why it was shown in cinemas in America. It isn’t really suitable as it is a bit clunky. Fine for TV, computer or mobile devices though.

Reading an article on the animation for the missing ‘Dads Army’ episode ”A Stripe for Frazer’, I noticed that Charles Norton got in contact with Phillip Morris regarding whether any missing Dads Army episodes had been found before any animation began. I wonder if Charles Norton got in contact with Phillip Morris again, regarding missing Doctor Who, and in particular ‘The Power of the Daleks’?

What actually are the “Original Camera Scripts”? Are they printed out versions of the scripts or will they be scanned on the DVD and be able to go through on the disc? It might sound like a silly question, but if they are actually printed out scripts (which I doubt) that would be great!

If they do release ‘The Daleks’ Master Plan’ next, then they should include Ian Levine’s ‘Mission to the Unknown’ animation. It would make a nice double story box-set (I see them as two separate stories, with the Myth Makers sitting in between).

I think ‘Mission to the Unknown’ should be re-animated. The Ian Levine version isn’t necessarily bad, but it could be improved upon. Some of the human characters need better definition, and not look so much like cartoon characters.

Sound very ambitious. I hope the BBC get the funding if possible to release The Daleks’ Master Plan, and what would be good if any missing episodes returned to fill the gaps on the incomplete stories. I am actually looking forward to this.

Just to remind you, the Power of the Daleks DVD is not the only Classic Dr Who DVD that the BBC mysteriously tweeted on Twitter a year ago. We might be seeing missing episodes returned to fill the gaps and reconstructions, using animations, to complete the story. Keep your eyes and ears for further news.
