I have just watched TUM 2 on Dailymotion. I enjoyed it, now that I have watched every existing episode of DW just in time for the 51st anniversary.

Shame that there is some film damage (Jamie saying ‘How about me sir?’) but hopefully it can be corrected for DVD release and I can’t wait for the animations by Planet 55 as 10th planet and moonbase was fantastic.

I hope they restore it properly and not rush it onto DVD like they did with Crusade 1.

I’m going to purchase Ghost Light and Survival next week so I will have the complete classic collection. I just need the Underwater Menace and it will contain every surviving episode.

To think that it was three years ago that we were told the news that Galaxy 4-3 and TUM-2 were found. The BFI screened them on their special day, and I’ve heard that TUM-2 was leaked online. I’ve been waiting for so long now that I might as well search for the leaked version. Anyone know any more information? (Regarding DVD release and TUM-2 online)

Don’t think this is going to be released any time soon-if at all! dwm did say it being released later this year…but then i read various posts and seen the 1 about the company ‘plante55’ who do the animation…as his comment was ‘even we don’t know what’s happening-from wear we’re standing it looks like the classic range is dead’. After that it’s basically disapeared of the face on the earth…

The classic doctor who dvd compendium says this:

“Since the lost in time set was released, episode 2 has been recovered etc, it has been reported that TUM will be issued on dvd sometime in 2014, although no specific date has been announced. It’s expected the two remaining episodes will be animated by Planet 55 studios, although this has not been confirmed. Special features include a documentary on the making of the serial, produced by Russell Minton, are known to have been made, and at least the standard features of commentary,

BIG NEWS! Steve Roberts of The Restoration Team has said this on ‘tvshowsondvd’ s facebook page

    http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/graphics/news3/DoctorWho_TheUnderwaterMenace_'dead‘.jpg

“Well, we’re the team that remasters the episodes for DVD release and even we don’t have a clue what’s going on with TUM now. From where we’re standing, it’s looking like the range is dead.”

Suggesting that, if there is to be a release, restoration may be being dealt with another company. TIEA perhaps, with a secret release? That’s what I’m hoping anyway 😉

    • gordon

      June 5th, 2014 - 9:26am

I think that quote was taken out of context as the original article that led to that quote was about releases after uwm. If you think about it that quote doesn’t make sense. In the 1 hand he says that we don’t know what’s happening with tum but on the other hand the range is dead. If he doesn’t know what is happening with tum how can he say the range is dead. As he already delivered the existing eps and extras his work his done for that release as he doesn’t have any involvement with animation or release dates. Tbc.

    • gordon

      June 5th, 2014 - 9:29am

    • skaroman

      May 9th, 2014 - 5:53pm

We were told that the Moonbase was being released in October and then pushed back to January. An exact release date was given for October when animation was just beginning. Why not UW?

    • gordon

      May 11th, 2014 - 12:06pm

A lot of people moaned and complained about the delay and said why anounce it for october if it was not going to be ready in time. BBC ww won’t want all that hastle again. Also with the current issues witanimation they might not know when its going to be ready so there would be no point saying it will be due x date when they don’t know at this time.

OK. Let’s just look at this another way…
G4 and TUW are found in 2011, G4 takes 16 months to be released as an extra and TUW are still ‘undergoing’ production.
TEOTW and TWOF are found in 2013 and they are released straight to DVD with LE slipcase versions within 5 months.
If popularity and anniversaries are concerned, when TUW comes out, not only will be glad to own it, but still frustrated at the time it has taken to be released.

That’s because the regular DVD range team had to deal with it being slapped onto the end of their own range. They weren’t all that happy about it (they only found out about it when we did).

With the other two stories, BBC Worldwide released it without the involvement of the regular team to rush the release (hence the lack of extras(.

In this months DWM, it says “The DVD release of The Underwater Menace is still scheduled for release later this year, and is set to bring the range of twentieth-century Doctor Who stories to a close. The disc will include the two installments held by the BBC(Episodes 2 and 3), with missing Episodes 1 and 4 reconstructed using audio soundtracks.

Note how it says ‘The disc’, so that means only 1, and it doesn’t mention anything about animation, so it maybe another case of ‘Web of Fear episodes 3’ type reconstruction 🙁

    • Doctor Rules

      May 2nd, 2014 - 8:18pm

I personally hope it will be animation. yeah telesnaps worked good for web of fear, but that was one epsiode. With two for Underwater Menace, animation would be betetr. Plus, Web of Fear got telesnaps so it could have an earlier release. If Underwater Menace is end of year, it should give them time to animate.

    • Some bloke

      May 3rd, 2014 - 10:19am

Rumours had been going around for AGES saying that animation had ceased, so perhaps it was true. That rumour started ages ago, so… To be honest I don’t mind. I like to look at it this way –
      A) We will FINALLY be getting Episode 2 released along with Ep 3 and reconstruction of 1 & 4, but

      B) There’s always a secret chance that they’ve found and are restoring episodes 1 and 4! I know everything has gone quite now, and they also said in DWM not to get your hopes up, but that could always be a good piece of misdirection. FINGERS CROSSED 😉

Possibly, or they’re just doing what’s being done with The Web of Fear (i.e. telesnap recons), assuming the rumour is true.

    • Jamiouse

      January 6th, 2014 - 10:38pm

They could but would people buy dvd’s with half recons and half full episodes? Animation bridges the gaps much better and I don’t think people would appriciate the change in format after all the animated episodes we’ve had. As Underwater isn’t expected until later in the year we’ll possibly have a bit of a wait until we find out for definate.

    • gordon

      January 6th, 2014 - 11:19pm

The halting of the animation for menace could be down to at least 4 different reasons

      1. The other eps have been found.
      2. Bbcww have realised with web 3 its better financially to release telesnaps recons than animation
      3. Sales of animated stories were below expected sales figures and they cut their losses
      4. Following a potential lead.

i just like watching the headlines but i would say if* true then likely “The Web of Fear” and “The Enemy of the World” not to keen on either l’m seriously hoping that the two stories would be “Power of the Daleks” and “Evil of the Daleks” just because l want to see the best scenes possible which in my view is the Dalek Emperor. It’s said there is scenes from The Crusade which would be good because it would at the least allow for a DVD Release. As of this moment though l’m expecting at the most something like 6 missing episode recoveries.

      October 7th, 2013 - 12:51pm

I’ll be happy with any episodes returned and by the end of play tomorrow (Tuesday) those going to the “London hotel” will be able to confirm what episodes have been “found” and, if the Radio Times is correct, we’ll know what will be on i-Tunes on Wednesday morning. Seems that The Crusades and Enemy of the World are the ones found, which explains why there is no animation for The Crusade…. could also explain delay in The Moonbase. Well, here’s hoping. Again.

      October 7th, 2013 - 1:00pm

Regardless of what they have found, 100 episodes of Doctor Who recovered is simply impossible. Only two countries have ever had enough copies to make such a recovery possible, and they are the UK and Australia.

This episode recovery is seemingly from a collection of African countries, and no matter how you look at it there is no way they could return either Mission to the Unknown or The Daleks’ Master Plan (not impossible for a return, but if they do come back it will be from the UK or Oz).

What may have happened (and seems quite likely) is

    • Anonymous

      October 7th, 2013 - 1:04pm

      *continued*

over 100 episodes have been found but not exclusively from Doctor Who, rather it is from a couple of shows including Doctor Who, we know they found two episodes of The Sky at Night for instance earlier this year (seemingly in the same negotiations), and there are some rumours of a recovery for Dad’s Army too.

However, even if we ended up at the lower end of the rumours (given they go from 3 episodes all the way up to 94) that will still be the biggest recovery in almost 22 years.

    • AlzieWhozie

      October 7th, 2013 - 2:00pm

Wish they had done more extended editions. Get a bit sick of seeing deleted scenes as an extra where they look a bit pointless and disjointed. Why not just do this for the unfinished clips, but put the descent ones in to extend the story? Some of the old VHS did this, so why not the DVDs?

    Once there was a program,
    whose name echoes all around.
Of a time lord and his companions
    who fought galland and bound.

    His adventures are available
    in a format called DVD.
Even though some stories are missing,
    animations we sing of thee.

Let us hope that this release is not
    the complete and final addition.
We want more releases and more adventures
    to complete our expanding collection.

We shall continue watching the time lords adventures

wow, let me have a go:
there is a time traveller, doctor who
whose adventures are on dvd, and blu-ray too
although some are missing, I hope you’re still listening for those are on dvd too.

with animation, of those by Terry Nation
we would all be happy, with the daleks it’s all clappy
if only a dalek were in a gun nappy
then the shooting would be less harm to you

what I’m trying to say is: please please and more please can you release all the dalek missing episodes bbc please
BBC earth calling BBC and Soctor Who, DOCTOR WHO PLEASE RELEASE!

It’s been fun getting the classic DVDs, so many rumours, wonderful listening to the commentaries, a chance to hear some of the greats even after they passed away. And some did the commentaries almost over their dead bodies. But never say never. I seem to recall after ‘The Invasion’ was animated we were told “no more animation” and yet…. So thanks guys for everything so far and for what WILL come!

Maybe in a couple of years down the line once hopefully animations come more affordable. There could be a possibility of repackaging but that wont include any new features

I was hoping that the Following was going to be released as special editions…

    Robot.
    Survival.
    Earth shock.
    Battle field.

    Reason why.

    Not many special features.
    Not very good covers.

Survival and battlefield are 2 disc releases. Dont Know how you say there isnt enough Extras as both stories are chockablock Full of Extras. Robot Extras are fine as are earthshock and have the Main things covered and there isnt anything wrong with the artwork for any of those 4 releases.
