I have just watched TUM 2 on Dailymotion. I enjoyed it, now that I have watched every existing episode of DW just in time for the 51st anniversary.

Shame that there is some film damage (Jamie saying ‘How about me sir?’) but hopefully it can be corrected for DVD release and I can’t wait for the animations by Planet 55 as 10th planet and moonbase was fantastic.

I hope they restore it properly and not rush it onto DVD like they did with Crusade 1.

    Christmas Wish: A release date

  • Some bloke

    October 23rd, 2014 - 6:53pm

emailed bbc shop yesterday… here’s their reply

‘Doctor Who- The Underwater menace is set for release but there is not yet an agreed release date.’

    • skaroman

      October 24th, 2014 - 7:53pm

I’m going to purchase Ghost Light and Survival next week so I will have the complete classic collection. I just need the Underwater Menace and it will contain every surviving episode.

To think that it was three years ago that we were told the news that Galaxy 4-3 and TUM-2 were found. The BFI screened them on their special day, and I’ve heard that TUM-2 was leaked online. I’ve been waiting for so long now that I might as well search for the leaked version. Anyone know any more information? (Regarding DVD release and TUM-2 online)

    October 22nd, 2014 - 5:29pm

Since we’re all still waiting, here’s a clip from TUM2.

    September 27th, 2014 - 5:08pm

Don’t think this is going to be released any time soon-if at all! dwm did say it being released later this year…but then i read various posts and seen the 1 about the company ‘plante55’ who do the animation…as his comment was ‘even we don’t know what’s happening-from wear we’re standing it looks like the classic range is dead’. After that it’s basically disapeared of the face on the earth…

I really want this to come out on DVD and I would also like a special edition of Earthshock too.

    • gordon

      September 5th, 2014 - 7:13am

If we were going to get a special edition of earthshock it would have happened already. Its been a year since the last special edition and 6 months since the last classic release so there has been plenty of time. Fully expecting menace to be the last release baring any future recovery’s

  • skaroman

    August 13th, 2014 - 4:11pm

The classic doctor who dvd compendium says this:

“Since the lost in time set was released, episode 2 has been recovered etc, it has been reported that TUM will be issued on dvd sometime in 2014, although no specific date has been announced. It’s expected the two remaining episodes will be animated by Planet 55 studios, although this has not been confirmed. Special features include a documentary on the making of the serial, produced by Russell Minton, are known to have been made, and at least the standard features of commentary,

    • skaroman

      August 13th, 2014 - 4:13pm

…production subtitles and a photo gallery are likely, as is part 2 of The television centre of the universe, part one of which is on The Visitation special edition”.

The book was written by Paul Smith, so possibly not official. Anyone else have any other news?

    • gordon

      August 14th, 2014 - 9:06am

Apart from planet 55 studios saying they have no doctor who animations in the pipeline there really isn’t any news on it

I bring glad tidings of great joy.

The Underwater Menace has just been put up for pre-order on (US not UK).

No release date has been given yet, but that does not mean we are far from one!!! 😀

    • booboo

      June 8th, 2014 - 9:39am

    • Mr Incognito

      June 16th, 2014 - 1:22pm

Why haven’t the RT heard anything? If it’s not animation then they would be the people asked to make up telesnap recons. I could see the two surviving episodes appearing on iTunes with or without the recons and the DVD kicked into the long grass.

  • Some bloke

    June 4th, 2014 - 10:44pm

BIG NEWS! Steve Roberts of The Restoration Team has said this on ‘tvshowsondvd’ s facebook page'dead‘.jpg

“Well, we’re the team that remasters the episodes for DVD release and even we don’t have a clue what’s going on with TUM now. From where we’re standing, it’s looking like the range is dead.”

Suggesting that, if there is to be a release, restoration may be being dealt with another company. TIEA perhaps, with a secret release? That’s what I’m hoping anyway 😉

    • Some bloke

      June 5th, 2014 - 9:11am

Ok, so the link doesn’t work but the quote is still there to read, so…

    • gordon

      June 5th, 2014 - 9:26am

I think that quote was taken out of context as the original article that led to that quote was about releases after uwm. If you think about it that quote doesn’t make sense. In the 1 hand he says that we don’t know what’s happening with tum but on the other hand the range is dead. If he doesn’t know what is happening with tum how can he say the range is dead. As he already delivered the existing eps and extras his work his done for that release as he doesn’t have any involvement with animation or release dates. Tbc.

    • gordon

      June 5th, 2014 - 9:29am

It also could be a simple case of since Dan hall isn’t in charge of the range whoever is isn’t keeping him informed with developments with animation anymore.

    • Some bloke

      June 5th, 2014 - 10:50am

fair point gordon, I think I just read it once and thought ‘WHAT COULD THIS MEAN!?’ 😀 I get where your coming from.

  • skaroman

May 6th, 2014 - 11:53am says that TUW is due to be released in September 2014.
    Obviously this is an estimation,
but even though a cover, details, animation confirmation or price is not available: a release date isn’t too much to ask?

    • gordon

      May 8th, 2014 - 11:21am

After the moaning and complaining about the 3 month delay of moonbase I don’t see them announcing a release date for it until its ready.

    • skaroman

      May 9th, 2014 - 5:53pm

We were told that the Moonbase was being released in October and then pushed back to January. An exact release date was given for October when animation was just beginning. Why not UW?

    • gordon

      May 11th, 2014 - 12:06pm

A lot of people moaned and complained about the delay and said why anounce it for october if it was not going to be ready in time. BBC ww won’t want all that hastle again. Also with the current issues witanimation they might not know when its going to be ready so there would be no point saying it will be due x date when they don’t know at this time.

Heaven forbid fans moan eh Gordon …….

  • skaroman

    May 4th, 2014 - 11:47pm

OK. Let’s just look at this another way…
G4 and TUW are found in 2011, G4 takes 16 months to be released as an extra and TUW are still ‘undergoing’ production.
TEOTW and TWOF are found in 2013 and they are released straight to DVD with LE slipcase versions within 5 months.
If popularity and anniversaries are concerned, when TUW comes out, not only will be glad to own it, but still frustrated at the time it has taken to be released.

    • Anonymous

      June 5th, 2014 - 12:19pm

That’s because the regular DVD range team had to deal with it being slapped onto the end of their own range. They weren’t all that happy about it (they only found out about it when we did).

With the other two stories, BBC Worldwide released it without the involvement of the regular team to rush the release (hence the lack of extras(.

  • BowTiesFezzesStetsons

    May 2nd, 2014 - 8:20pm

I hope the cover for this one is back to the original ‘banner’ I don’t look liek the look of the american style Enemy of the World and Web of Fear covers. But people say you can flip covers to make it look like the banner? Not owning TEOTW or TWOF i don’t know.

    • Some bloke

      May 3rd, 2014 - 10:15am

yes you can. On the reverse side, they have the original roundels banner, so they match 😉

    • gordon

      May 3rd, 2014 - 10:36am

Those were produced by a different team than normal. It will be the normal cover as its the last produced by dan hall/pup ltd

  • Some bloke

    April 30th, 2014 - 2:29pm

In this months DWM, it says “The DVD release of The Underwater Menace is still scheduled for release later this year, and is set to bring the range of twentieth-century Doctor Who stories to a close. The disc will include the two installments held by the BBC(Episodes 2 and 3), with missing Episodes 1 and 4 reconstructed using audio soundtracks.

Note how it says ‘The disc’, so that means only 1, and it doesn’t mention anything about animation, so it maybe another case of ‘Web of Fear episodes 3’ type reconstruction 🙁

    • Anonymous

      April 30th, 2014 - 4:09pm

Why would a four part story get any more than one disc though?

    • Some bloke

      April 30th, 2014 - 6:49pm

special features…? They did it for ark in space, terror of the zygons, battlefield and many, many more stories.

    • who there

      May 2nd, 2014 - 6:53pm

but they have already done some animation ahhh no more telesnapes

    • Doctor Rules

      May 2nd, 2014 - 8:18pm

I personally hope it will be animation. yeah telesnaps worked good for web of fear, but that was one epsiode. With two for Underwater Menace, animation would be betetr. Plus, Web of Fear got telesnaps so it could have an earlier release. If Underwater Menace is end of year, it should give them time to animate.

    • Some bloke

      May 3rd, 2014 - 10:19am

Rumours had been going around for AGES saying that animation had ceased, so perhaps it was true. That rumour started ages ago, so… To be honest I don’t mind. I like to look at it this way –
      A) We will FINALLY be getting Episode 2 released along with Ep 3 and reconstruction of 1 & 4, but

      B) There’s always a secret chance that they’ve found and are restoring episodes 1 and 4! I know everything has gone quite now, and they also said in DWM not to get your hopes up, but that could always be a good piece of misdirection. FINGERS CROSSED 😉

      not revealed yet! 🙄

    • gordon

      February 22nd, 2014 - 10:24am

its not out till the end of the year according to Steve Roberts of the restoration team. It’s on hold till Planet 55 complete more imminent and higher paying animations. So it will be months before extras and cover will be revealed.

    • patman

      February 24th, 2014 - 8:51pm

      so they are animating it

    • Anonymous

      February 24th, 2014 - 9:07pm

Yes they are animating it, this will be the final release so there will be some leftover extras included on it that they’ve been unable to put elsewhere, but the animation seems to be the main issue.

    • VespiformsSting

      February 24th, 2014 - 9:35pm

Photo galleries from the missing stories would be ideal….there was no galaxy four gallery and non of the episodes on lost in time were accompanied by photo material either…

    • who there

      April 6th, 2014 - 11:18am

I’ve herd Planet55 Considering Move to UK, New Animated Releases Planned? is this true and dose anyone think that the dvd will be out this year

  • Jamiouse

    January 6th, 2014 - 10:01pm

Theres a rumour going around that the animation has been cancelled. Could it mean that episodes one and four have been found?

    • oodlesofood

      January 6th, 2014 - 10:17pm

Possibly, or they’re just doing what’s being done with The Web of Fear (i.e. telesnap recons), assuming the rumour is true.

    • Jamiouse

      January 6th, 2014 - 10:38pm

They could but would people buy dvd’s with half recons and half full episodes? Animation bridges the gaps much better and I don’t think people would appriciate the change in format after all the animated episodes we’ve had. As Underwater isn’t expected until later in the year we’ll possibly have a bit of a wait until we find out for definate.

    • gordon

      January 6th, 2014 - 11:19pm

The halting of the animation for menace could be down to at least 4 different reasons

      1. The other eps have been found.
      2. Bbcww have realised with web 3 its better financially to release telesnaps recons than animation
      3. Sales of animated stories were below expected sales figures and they cut their losses
      4. Following a potential lead.

  • the doctor

    December 24th, 2013 - 5:11pm

with all this over missing eps found I have a question that people seem to turn away from ? when my 8th made a return for the night of the doctor .it was said more of NUMBER 8 a flash back series would do the whole series a good turn …with torchwood on hold and sarah jane now ended WHY CANT THE BBC DO IT WELL YOU PAY THEM ..think about it what you want you should get..AS THEY WORK FOR YOU

  • scottsands

    October 12th, 2013 - 7:15am

I’m hoping that they re release a lot of he earlier dvd. Not because of lack of Special features or rubbish dvd cover, but because of lack of a 2entertainment logo on the side it really annoying. lol

    October 7th, 2013 - 12:48am

Hey has every one heard that they have found more then 100 missing episodes! I hope that the DVDs will be released next year! What story do you guys want found? I really want Power of the Daleks, Macra terror, Evil of the Daleks, Web of Fear, Fury from the Deep and the Celestial Toymaker! And what do you think about this do you think it is a rumor or true?

    • Lachie

      October 7th, 2013 - 2:44am

i just like watching the headlines but i would say if* true then likely “The Web of Fear” and “The Enemy of the World” not to keen on either l’m seriously hoping that the two stories would be “Power of the Daleks” and “Evil of the Daleks” just because l want to see the best scenes possible which in my view is the Dalek Emperor. It’s said there is scenes from The Crusade which would be good because it would at the least allow for a DVD Release. As of this moment though l’m expecting at the most something like 6 missing episode recoveries.

    • AlzieWhozie

      October 7th, 2013 - 12:51pm

I’ll be happy with any episodes returned and by the end of play tomorrow (Tuesday) those going to the “London hotel” will be able to confirm what episodes have been “found” and, if the Radio Times is correct, we’ll know what will be on i-Tunes on Wednesday morning. Seems that The Crusades and Enemy of the World are the ones found, which explains why there is no animation for The Crusade…. could also explain delay in The Moonbase. Well, here’s hoping. Again.

    • Anonymous

      October 7th, 2013 - 1:00pm

Regardless of what they have found, 100 episodes of Doctor Who recovered is simply impossible. Only two countries have ever had enough copies to make such a recovery possible, and they are the UK and Australia.

This episode recovery is seemingly from a collection of African countries, and no matter how you look at it there is no way they could return either Mission to the Unknown or The Daleks’ Master Plan (not impossible for a return, but if they do come back it will be from the UK or Oz).

What may have happened (and seems quite likely) is

    • Anonymous

      October 7th, 2013 - 1:04pm

over 100 episodes have been found but not exclusively from Doctor Who, rather it is from a couple of shows including Doctor Who, we know they found two episodes of The Sky at Night for instance earlier this year (seemingly in the same negotiations), and there are some rumours of a recovery for Dad’s Army too.

However, even if we ended up at the lower end of the rumours (given they go from 3 episodes all the way up to 94) that will still be the biggest recovery in almost 22 years.

    • AlzieWhozie

      October 7th, 2013 - 2:00pm

I do apologise that it doesn’t appear to be The Crusdaes tomorrow but is Marco Polo instead as well as Web of Fear and Enemy of the World. Oh my giddy Aunt!!! I’m boycotting Radio Times if it doesn’t happen lol

  • Howard

    October 5th, 2013 - 9:25pm

Wish they had done more extended editions. Get a bit sick of seeing deleted scenes as an extra where they look a bit pointless and disjointed. Why not just do this for the unfinished clips, but put the descent ones in to extend the story? Some of the old VHS did this, so why not the DVDs?

  • skaroman

    September 24th, 2013 - 6:48pm

Animation of episodes 2 + 4 of the crusade.
The Ian Levine animation of mission to the unknown.

    • Lachie

hi, Gordon and/or MasterKasterborous you seem to know much on the DVD Range or at least give brilliant info for people like me asking questions on this site. Can you please tell me whether this is confirmed as the end of the Range by the Team as a whole and not just the colourist. And no doubt since its the last Season 2 story “The Crusade” what are your thoughts on it?

    • Lachie

      September 24th, 2013 - 8:21am

Also another big one left for me to ask is whether this is the end for Revisitations because l’m in a situation here in Aus (Region 4) whereby “The Two Doctors” and “The Curse of Fenric” are out of print. Now l’ve heard a majority of rumours on “The Two Doctors: Special Edition through sites after it too has now gone out of print in the US (Region 1) as well. Now l’m all good with “The Curse of Fenric” i can no doubt purchase it through eBay but “The Two Doctors” i can’t find anywhere! anyway give me your thoughts if you can much appreciated 😀

From Steve Roberts comments about moonbase and underwater menace being their last commisions for the dvd range and it winding down its certainly looking like the end for classic releases produced dan Hall and the restoration Team for the immediate future but i can See the bbc themselves rerelease the dvds in repackaged Box sets later down the line

Heard that Chris chapman (documentary Director) has mentioned that he thinks that journey to the centre of tv centre Part 2 will be going on underwater menace. Not exactly the Most ideal place to go on but seeing as there isnt Plans to do any more davidson revisits and menace was recorded at tv centre menace is as good as any place at this late Stage.

    Once there was a program,
    whose name echoes all around.
Of a time lord and his companions
    who fought galland and bound.

    His adventures are available
    in a format called DVD.
Even though some stories are missing,
    animations we sing of thee.

Let us hope that this release is not
    the complete and final addition.
We want more releases and more adventures
    to complete our expanding collection.

We shall continue watching the time lords adventures
at a good and steady pace.

It’s been fun getting the classic DVDs, so many rumours, wonderful listening to the commentaries, a chance to hear some of the greats even after they passed away. And some did the commentaries almost over their dead bodies. But never say never. I seem to recall after ‘The Invasion’ was animated we were told “no more animation” and yet…. So thanks guys for everything so far and for what WILL come!

Maybe in a couple of years down the line once hopefully animations come more affordable. There could be a possibility of repackaging but that wont include any new features

I was hoping that the Following was going to be released as special editions…

    Earth shock.
    Battle field.

    Reason why.

    Not many special features.
    Not very good covers.

Survival and battlefield are 2 disc releases. Dont Know how you say there isnt enough Extras as both stories are chockablock Full of Extras. Robot Extras are fine as are earthshock and have the Main things covered and there isnt anything wrong with the artwork for any of those 4 releases.
