Big Finish Once and Future Episode Five The Martian Invasion of Planetoid 50

Available to order from www.bigfinish.com

The Tenth Doctor meets Missy

He is the Doctor, but probably not the one you were expecting. Big Finish Productions’ celebratory Doctor Who series, Once and Future, continues in September with a new episode. David Tennant returns to our screens later this year for three new TV specials as the Fourteenth Doctor. But, before then, he’s back on audio in his Tenth incarnation for a very special anniversary team-up. Joining him are Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh), Jenny Flint (Catrin Stewart) and Strax (Dan Starkey) as The Paternoster Gang, helping battle against villainous rogue Time Lord, Missy (Michelle Gomez), and an army of invading tripods straight out of the pages of an HG Wells novel.

Doctor Who – Once and Future: The Martian Invasion of Planetoid 50, written by Jonathan Barnes, is now available to pre-order as a single-disc collector’s edition CD (+ download for just £10.99), or digital download only (for just £8.99), exclusively from www.bigfinish.com.

The First Doctor arrives in Victorian London amid a Martian invasion. But he discovers all is not what it seems when Missy appears… Soon, the Doctor is propelled into a future incarnation – the Tenth – but he is not alone in battling Missy and her Martian invaders. The Paternoster Gang – Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint and Strax – are also here to assist. But can they offer the Doctor any help in solving his own degeneration mystery?

Series producer David RIchardson said: “I feel privileged to have produced this very special episode, and the recording session was very special too. “To have all of these wonderfully rich characters together was a treat, and to have David Tennant and Michelle Gomez going head-to-head was joyous. Michelle loves to play with the script, and she improvised beautifully – and David took her improvisations and matched her. “During the recording I wondered how much might make it to the edit, but it’s all there within the final scenes. Joyous – I’ve used the word again. I’ve no other way to describe it.”

Big Finish listeners can purchase all eight Once and Future audio adventures together in a bundle for just £72 (on collector’s edition CD and download) or £60 (download only). A special edition series bundle, which contains extended behind-the-scenes extras and music suites for each story, is also available to pre-order for just £62 (as a digital download only). All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

Please note that Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mailout of collector’s edition CDs will be delayed, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.

Can anyone tell me if these can be enjoyed on their own, without listening to others in the series? Only really interested in the upcoming one with Chris and David Warner.

      Generally, I’d say so. Yes.
There’s always a minute or so at the beginning of each adventure of the Doctor going through multiple regeneration cycles which lead into the story. But on the whole, they do seem to be self contained adventures that can be listened to at random.

Surely the best thing to do is buy CD for £72 then sell it for say £50 plus… enabling you have the download (forever) for the difference… you might even break even & have free downloads…

I think this ‘Once and Future’ series has been massively overhyped, and – for me at least – isn’t really delivering the goods. It’s hardly a celebration of the whole 60 years of the show, with so many absent characters from the past, in favour of NuWho favourites like the Paternoster gang, Lady Christina, Jackie Tyler, Jenny, Missy…

Was really excited when this range first got announced, but it’s not really grabbing me so far, the latest release, ‘A Genius for War’ was good, but I got the impression it was a story idea that had been kicking around for a while, with minor changes made to include it into this range. And I agree with the comment above regarding the Special Edition artwork, they’re really not that good. I feel those of us who pre-ordered the whole set should at least be getting the standard cover supplied as well as a bonus.

That’s if we ever see them! Three of these stories have been released so far – the 4th is imminent. Yet, those of us who ordered the Special Edition CD’s have still only received the first story – nothing for over 2 months now and no updates from BF.

Haven’t started listening to this whole thing yet it’s too expensive but to the people who have, does any of it actually make any sense and keep with the show continuity? Or is it just more big finish action figure wish fulfillment

I used to class Big Finish as Canon but not anymore. Its just become too cluttered I.e post War Games stories for 2nd doctor, hundreds of multi doctor stories where its no longer a unique event. Maybe some of the early releases maybe could be canonical but not anything from the last 15 years for sure. The Doctor must suffer from a lot of memory loss. I think of them all as parallel universe storys (infinite universes etc). Otherwise you’d go mad.

This whole series has really surprised me, I’ve been a long time listener but really dislike the move to box sets, the second story in particular is highly recommended.

Not gonna lie I actually think that the special editions aren’t really that good not a fan of the artwork and half of the stuff that was promised in the article but the stories are still good

I’ve subscribed to the whole series but the ongoing issues with Big Finish CD deliveries mean that so far, I’ve only got the first story! No updates on when the outstanding CDs are expected…

Same, Brian. Totally underwhelmed with BF at the moment. We are now waiting on 3 CD special editions (nos. 2. 3 & 4), with no update whatsoever from BF – which is what I find the most frustrating and annoying aspect. They are quite happy to take the £75 upfront, yet seem incapable of adding a brief update to their daily “news” items. Not happy.
