Big Finish Doctor Who Tenth Doctor, Classic Companions

Available to order from www.bigfinish.com

It’s the nostalgic trip of a lifetime for the Tenth Doctor, as he teams up with the best friends of his previous selves in a brand-new box set from Big Finish Productions. Due for release in September 2022, David Tennant stars in three full-cast audio dramas recorded during the lockdown imposed by this year’s coronavirus pandemic.

The Tenth Doctor revisits classic companions K9, Leela, Ace and Nyssa long after their time-travelling adventures have finished. Because they all need help, and when people need help, the Doctor will never refuse. Doctor Who – Tenth Doctor, Classic Companionsis now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition CD (for just £24.99) or a digital download (for just £19.99) exclusively from www.bigfinish.com.

Splinter by John Dorney

The Doctor finds K9 floating in space, and sets off to clear up Time War fallout. First, they find Leela protecting a village from the Spriggan.

The Stuntman by Lizzie Hopley

The Doctor and K9 enter a virtual world of a movie stuntman to help Nyssa escape a Time War criminal’s scheme.

Quantum of Axos by Roy Gill

Ace investigates a new tech company which seems too good to be true, and meets the Doctor and K9 as Axos escapes its trap.

Producer David Richardson said: “We took our cue from School Reunion for this set -what would it be like if the Tenth Doctor met some of his past companions, later in their lives. The result is three emotional, exciting stories that cut to the core of Doctor Who, about moving on but never forgetting and always embracing the past.”

David Tennant said: “It’s been one of the great unexpected delights of being locked in one’s house for months on end, that this was something I was able to do. To be not only doing all these wonderful stories but to be appearing alongside peoplelike Louise Jameson, John Leeson, Sarah Sutton and Sophie Aldred, it’s been just such a treat. I’ve loved it. It’s always such a lovely thing to return to, this show.”

Doctor Who –Tenth Doctor, Classic Companionsis now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition CD (for just £24.99) or a digital download (for just £19.99) exclusively from the Big Finish website.

So disappointing to see yet more negativity and “canon crusaders”.

This is a great idea and fits into the established events. In the end of time it is clearly stated AND SHOWN that the 10th doctor visited ALL his companions as part of his “reward” before what he thought was his “death”. We see him meet his “new” companions and Russell T Davies stated on the commentary track that in his mind 10 visited all classic companions before the end.

What we have here based on the descriptions is essentially “the wedding of sarah jane”2.0 (note no one is mentioning that when saying BF are running out of ideas!!), three stories with three classic companions that are now grown older and had lives without the doctor. This will likely go into the 10th doctors redemption story and the desire to keep going.

I wish people would appreciate what we get – dream scenarios that fit perfectly into the narrative and just adds so much enjoyment to perhaps the saddest regeneration, we now have ace, nyssa and leela to go along side river song, sarah jane, jago & litefoot, mickey, rose etc.

Big finish have been going for 21 YEARS so those pinning for dust breeding and spare parts can listen to them for the 57th time, I will stick with new 10th doctor with DAVID TENNANT while its going strong!!

Totally agree, however I don’t believe that this is set during the ‘reward’, as these stories sound like there going to be taking place over multiple days, and we haven’t seen a time lord (especially one who has absorbed some much radiation like Ten did) been able to hold off regeneration for that long. I think it’s fine that Ten saw someone of the people close to him, as that would have taken up an hour and a half, any longer he would have probably gone past the point where he can no longer regenerate, like what Capaldi’s doctor was originally going to do in Twice upon a time.

i almost agree but in “death of the doctor” 11 tells jo that “the last time is was dying i looked back at you all and was so proud”, so its possible that it could be pre regeneration or any point in the specials timeframe.

Well Tennant does have all three volumes of dalek universe coming out next year, as well as out of time 2. So it makes sense for this to come out in 2022, so 2021 isn’t Tennant dominated.

Another thing to cram into the tiny gap between journeys end and end of time.

Well not exactly, as the doctor claimed he was 903 in voyage of the dammed, and in day of the doctor, which we can presume is after Donna departure as his alone, he says his 904. When it comes to the end of time, he says that his 906, which means we have two years, to a year and a half, of having the doctor by himself. Also, after rose, his was by himself for a little bit and also with Martha, so there is some room there aswell.

Well blame RTD for that considering he hardly left any time between his adventures

Two years is tiny, considering in that time he had three novels, 10 volumes of comics, two brand new companions, timelord victorious, the River audios, the Dalek audios, the fourth Doctor audios, the other various audios, then the 50th anniversary. It’s just hard to believe that in two years he was essentially non stop for any second of the day doing all these things. I always feel it diminishes the grief and downtrodden Doctor of the end of time if in between losing Donna he does all this great stuff and lives a good life. One of the whole points of the Doctor being so angry at his regeneration is that he’s had such a small life as ten and lost so much in that space.

It’s bit like Riversong now. Her story started tragic. A woman in love with the Doctor who’ life was cut short as she sacrifices herself to save the man she loves.

But she’s met every single version of the Doctor, had an amazing life post childhood, gets to spend 24 years living a happy life with her husband and then doesn’t even die she gets uploaded to a computer. The tragedy gets diminished the longer these characters are dragged out.

But they gotta make money I suppose, it just feels like certain characters are being milked.

Well I guess it is what you consider to be canon or not, as we know for a fact elements of the comics and Big finish are technically not canon in the main doctor who timeline, which is already confusing at times. I myself personally, don’t believe that the two new companion’s are canon, as i believe it takes away from the story line of seeing Tennant’s doctor starting to become more unhinged as his doesn’t have a companion to keep his version of the doctor in check. If you want to consider all of these events canon, in the time between a journeys end, and the end of time, then by all means do so, but personally I consider some of these stories (not all), to be what if scenarios, where we imagine what would happen if the doctor went to this place, or what would happen if he meet this person again.

You could also argue that due to him learning his story is going to end, in the planet of the dead, which he did hear earlier in planet of the odd, that he went on many more adventures, almost no-stop to try and escape his fate and run from it, which is also want Smiths version of the doctor did in Series 6. Also I don’t believe that him going on more adventures diminishes his grief, as he still only lived for 5 years, compared with other doctors who lived for 50 to 100 years plus, but i guess its up for interpretation.

Are they milking it? maybe, but I’m just glad to be getting more stories where we get to hear Tennant’s doctor speak and interact with companions i never thought he would meet, or villains I never believed he would face.

Consider the huge amount of peri stories set between planet of fire and caves. There is no gap between them on screen. We have to believe that during those two stories peri has all of these adventures, doesn’t age and happens to put the same outfit on for caves!

rule no1, the doctor lies………and his age is always a lie…….matt smith did.

2 years in timelord years might by 100 human years……

Anoymous: Totally agree the gap between planet of fire and caves is so saturated now it’s almost unbelievable. One story yes I can cope with but 100 odd no way. Peri was still inexperienced in adventuring during Caves. The pudding has already been over egged.

How do we know his age is in earth years?

2 years might be more than enough time on Gallifreyan time

What the Doctor says their age is isn’t actually indicative of what it is. The 3rd Doctor says he’s been a scientist for a thousand years in one of his stories, the 7th Doctor was 950-odd in Time and the Rani. 10 was around for longer then people think he was. He spends three years waiting for Martha in the Infinite Quest, there’s the year that never was, and that’s just on TV and in an animated story.

As for the 5/Peri gap, I honestly don’t mind, because it doesn’t really make a lot of sense as to why Peri sticks with 6 if she didn’t already share a bond with the Doctor, and strong friendships don’t happen in a day.

I like the idea of ‘new doctors-Classic companions’, but for me the novelty soon wears off
and they tend to throw lots of classic monsters into a storyline to compensate. I,d like them to do some with Steven And Dodo if they could get Jackie Lane back. Also, they could reverse it and have ‘ New companions-Classic Doctors. I,d love Donna ‘having a go’ at the Fifth or sixth doctor and also can they get Martha and Mickey (as a Couple) together with tenth why,ll were at it .Availability permitting.

If Jackie Lane could be persuaded she’d be better treated by Big Finish than the BBC, it’d be lovely. Dodo deserves some loving treatment.

It’s all getting a bit silly at big finish for me. It used to be meeting an old character was a rare treat now it seems virtually every release is multiply characters saying hello again.

Totally agree with this. In the early days, BF were very restrained and it meant it felt like a genuine event when the Master came back in Dust Breeding etc. I’m a bit worried about what the main range will change into, as that’s the last place where you get good “standard” adventures.

Wonderfull. Simply brilliant Idea. K9 found floating in space, Axos, Leela,Ace, Nyssa. brilliant.

I am surprised that with Visual media coming on in leaps and bounds re- rotoscoping, sets and characters out of film, that we have not had the same Digital revolution for Audio. Where recasting, or voice artists are used.

    Brilliant though.
