Doctor Who Earth Story Awakening / The Gunfighters DVD

Awakening: Peter Davison

The Tardis has brought the Doctor Tegan and Turlough to the English country village of Little Hodcombe in 1984 where an alien war machine, the Malus, is affecting its inhabitants.

A re-enactment of a civil war battle becomes dangerously real as the Malus gather sufficient psychic energy to re-awake.

The Gunfighters: Starring William Hartnell

The Tardis arrives in the town of Tombstone in the Wild West and the Doctor, having hurt a touch on one of Cyril’s sweets, decides he must visit a dentist.

The local dentist is Doc Holliday, currently engaged in a feud with the Clanton family. Lawmen Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson are meanwhile doing their best to keep the peace.

The TARDIS has brought the Doctor, Tegan and Turlough to the picture-postcard English village of Little Hodcombe. Tegan has come to visit her grandfather – well-known local historian Andrew Verney – but he seems to be missing.

The residents of Little Hodcombe, led by the obsessive Sir George Hutchinson, are playing a vicious war game – an exact recreation of a battle of the English Civil War fought there in 1643.

As each of the TARDIS crew witnesses a terrifying apparition from the past, the Doctor realises that he faces a far greater menace than the unstable Hutchinson. An ancient and alien force for evil is at work – one which will glory in the slaughter of them all…

Originally transmitted 19 – 20th January 1984. Produced by John Nathan-Turner. Directed by Michael Owen Morris.

The TARDIS arrives in Tombstone, Arizona in 1881. The Doctor, suffering from toothache, seeks out the local dentist-the notorious Doc Holliday. Meanwhile, Steven and Dodo decide to explore the town, and soon find themselves in the Last Chance Saloon…

Tensions are running high between the feuding Clanton family and Doc Holliday, whilst the local lawman, Wyatt Earp, struggles to keep the peace. When legendary gunman Johnny Ringo comes to town, events start to escalate…

Can the Doctor, Steven and Dodo do anything to stop the situation getting any worse? Or will there be a gunfight at the OK Corral?

This story was broadcast on BBC 7 between 30 April -21 May 1966.

The Awakening looks great, atleast I think so. Having read the Novelisation of that story, I should certainly want to own it on DVD, aswell as the other recent release, Frontios, which is a strong story DESPITE being an under-rated one, (probably because it isnt told with glamour and action, likes of Caves of Adrozahni and Attack of the Cybermen were) but Frontios is a story I wont forget 😮

As for this BOXSET, the cover is pretty gorgeous, but once again Im just going to buy the one I WANT seperately offa ebay, given the chance. 😉

I’m quite actually looking foward to this boxset.

I only remember some bits of The Awakaning from when I watched the UKTV Gold repeats but I’m looking foward to watching this complete.

The Gunfighters sounds interesting but from what I’ve heard apparantly it’s rubbish.

The Gunfighters is a decent story, but it’s certainly not one of the best stories of it’s time.

Good cover. Looking forward to having my peter davidson collection complete. The end of the line documentary on the gunfightrs dvd about the second half of the hartnal era from what i read sounds more interesting than gunfighters. Next year we are getting snsorites reign of terror and planet of giants out of the hartnal era says the curent doctor who magazine. I hope in a box set.

This is a mistake in my opinion I wish they released Frontios with The Awakening and release The Gunfighters on its own because I don’t want any black and white stories, just want colour ones, and they’ve never released a colour story and black and white story before so I think this is a bad move

There is nothing wrong with black and white; in my opinion I prefer b&w to colour!

I actually think it’s a good move to have two unlinked stories released together; for variety.

    I thought The Gunfighters was…
