Edited, conceived and commissioned by ELTON TOWNEND JONES

1977: Brian Eno and David Bowie apply random oblique strategy cards to the recording of Bowie’s Low and “Heroes” LPs. From rock ‘n’ roll comes a new kind of art.

2017: playwright Elton Townend Jones and his Vortex of Wholigans apply the same strategy cards to every Doctor Who TV story. From time ‘n’ space comes a new kind of magic.

Over 275 stories, over 275 bursts of fast fiction, 70 writers, 16 Doctors, and a whole new adventure across the history of everyone’s favourite Time Lord. In aid of Children In Need (all profits after printing costs).

Sleeve Art by Simon A Brett. From Chinbeard Books, November 2017.

Following the publication of the charity fan fiction anthology A Time Lord for Change (edited by Elton Townend Jones) in 2016, playwright and theatre producer Elton Townend Jones brings together 70 professional and fan authors to create a ‘concept album’ that takes the works of Brian Eno, David Bowie and Doctor Who and builds something new from them. This is Doctor Who as we know it, but also not-quite. A skewed, liberated reading of the Time Lord’s television adventures through a mirror crack’d. A magical apocrypha that breaks the rules and has no plan for putting them back together. That’s for the reader to sort out. A collection of stories, a box of fireworks, and a lot more besides.

Featuring 275 fiction pieces specifically commissioned by Elton Townend Jones, Whoblique Strategies features work from a Vortex of Wholigans, a carefully selected team of writers who have worked for BBC, Big Finish and DWM versions of Doctor Who, and writers from other disciplines such as music, poetry, journalism, and academia – many of whom are Bowie, Eno, or Doctor Who fans, and new to ‘fan fiction’ – plus a number of dedicated fan writers.

Writers: Elton Townend Jones; Simon Messingham; David A McIntee; John Dorney; Simon A Forward; Ian Potter; Simon Bucher-Jones; Paul Ebbs; Matthew J Elliott; Alistair Lock; Andrew Hunt; Blair Bidmead; Ira Lightman; Dan Rebellato; Matt Adams; Andy Priestner; Sami Kelsh; Christian Cawley; Paul Driscoll; Tim Gambrell; JR Southall; Christopher Samuel Stone; Matt Sewell; John Gerard Hughes; Daniel Wealands; Craig Moss; Kara Dennison; Sarah Di-Bella; Hendryk Korzeniowski; Brendan Jones; Will Ingram; Ash Stewart; Christine Grit; Nick Mellish; Mark Trevor Owen; Dan Milco; Ken Shinn; Jon Arnold; Jon Dear; Brad Wolfe; Matt Barber; Georgia Ingram; Alan G McWhan; Alan Taylor; Aryldi Moss-Burke; Warren Cathrine; Townsend Shoulders; Marius Riley; Simon A Brett; Lee Ravitz; Robin G Burchill; Callum Stewart; Tessa North; Ian Baldwin; Philip Bates; Alex Spencer; Lee Rawlings; Steve Watts; Ian Kubiak; James McLean; Gareth Alexander; Liam Hogan; Clive Greenwood; Stephen Aintree; Barnaby Eaton-Jones; Ruth Wheeler; Martin Tucker.

No, they mean the one between Troughton and Pertwee.

Not far into it yet, about 50 pages, and i know it’s for charity, but it’s very hard work.

Oh dear, I’ve given up. Too much much nonsense. Some interesting bits but not enough. Very self indulgent.

Tried again but no. In the story linked to plant of giants for instance the author gets the name of the creator of dn6 wrong (farrow instead of smithers) and a lot of the stories just don’t make sense. Wish I’d just given the £10.99 directly to children in need now.

For me, there are 13 Doctors. The War Doctor didn’t call himself Doctor, as he didn’t feel he deserved the title.

Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, T. Baker, Davison, C. Baker, McCoy, McGann, Eccelston, Tennant, Smith, Capaldi & Whittaker.

Whitaker will be the 14th regeneration making 15 doctors. Its regenerations not the name that counts. The war doctor is the doctor just as tennant is a different version of the tenth after his regeneration. So 15, hartnell, troughton, pertwee, baker t, davison, baker c, mccoy, mcgann, hurt, eccelston, tennant, tennant, smith, capalidi, whitaker. Matt smith says in time and the doctor that he is the 13th and final doctor. He says war doctor may not call himself doctor but it still counts. And that tenth used a regeneration to keep the same image. So whitaker is 15th doctor.

That may be, but in canon, no, Jodie Whittaker is the 13th incarnation of the Doctor. Now in hindsight, this is why its confusing AF to number the doctors. It shouldnt have been written in that the 10th doctor was shot by the dalek as that was a wasted regeneration

In canon she is the 15th doctor. In the stories smith is 13th so she is 15th. Just because shes being referred to as 13th doesn’t mean she is. She is the 15th doctor. Its that simple. Oh and in canon the dr was shot by a dalek and did regenerate. That is canon.

No, she’s the Fourteenth, but because War doesn’t go by the Doctor, she’s Thirteenth. There aren’t two Incarnations that look like Tennant, it’s the same guy. Yes he regenerated but he didn’t change, thus didn’t become a new incarnation.

They could mean Peter Cushings Doctor. Or the Doctor from the unbound universe in Big Finish.

      4. Fourth Doctor
      5. Fifth Doctor
      6. Sixth Doctor
      7. Seventh Doctor
      8. Eighth Doctor
      9. War Doctor
      10. Ninth Doctor
      11. Tenth Doctor
      12. Eleventh Doctor
      13. Twelfth Doctor
      14. Unbound Third Doctor
      15. Shalka Doctor
      16. Rowan Atkinson Ninth Doctor

      I would imagine it’s more like: 1) First 2) Second 3) The Uncarnation/Leopardskin 4) Third 5) Fourth 6) Fifth 7) Sixth 8) Seventh 9) Eighth 10) War 11) Ninth 12) Tenth 13) Eleventh 14) Twelfth 15) Thirteenth 16) Gillian Anderson. If I were to hazard a guess.
