I’m afraid I’m confused again. How at all are these different from the ones currently on sale on the BBC Shop website and in places like the Stamp Centre? Cheers.

The 10th sonic based on this picture is not different from previous releases (maybe they fixed the soundchip because the 2013 release contained 4 sound effects, just like all the other 2013 releases, and that’s wrong).
The 11th sonic is a cheaper version of the previous toys, it can not extend.
The 5th and 8th sonics were never released before, althought the 5th sonic is just a repaint of the 4th one, but the 8th sonic is different(the design is similar but not the same and functions differently, with a button instead of pulling down).

Forbidden Planet now have them in store, well they do in Nottingham anyway. I immediately bought the 5th and 8th Doctor’s Sonics and can confirm that they are both fitted with the 11th Doctor’s Sonic sound chip and the 8th Doctor’s does have a button on it instead of a pull down collar, although the top isn’t spring loaded like it is in the movie.

      January 17th, 2014 - 9:53pm

so just the two sounds instead of the 4 like the third and fourth re-releases and war doctor?

    • NCC1701D

      January 17th, 2014 - 10:56pm

Firstly, Balakin, there was loads of them on the shelf with the rest of the Dr. Who stuff, I can’t imagine they’d all have gone a matter of hours after I was there. Secondly, Mattisthedoctor, the third and fourth doctor sonics have 2 sounds the same as the 10th doctor’s sonic, the war doctor’s sonic has 4 new sounds and the 5th and 8th doctor’s sonics have the same 4 sounds as the 11th doctor’s sonic.

    • Mattisthedoctor

      January 18th, 2014 - 8:59am

@NCC1701D ok thanks, I heard that the fourth and third re-releases had the same four as the war doctor but I have the original releases and they have just the two, Is the fifth doctor literally just a fourth doctor repaint?

    • NCC1701D

      January 18th, 2014 - 12:19pm

Mattisthedoctor, yes the 5th Doctor’s screwdriver is just a repaint of the 4th Doctor’s (just as the real one is), but I think the new sound chip makes it worth it, and I personally really like the paint job, even though it is similar to the 4th Doctors.

I can understand how this was done. The Tenth’s was a high selling one so it was chosen to re-release it again. Sometimes items from one wave are brought into another. The Eleventh’s is going to get new classic packaging as Matt Smith has finished, so it’s introduced to the wave. If the Twelfth’s is still the same model then there will be no need to have a new Twelfth Doctor packaging as the green clawed version will be associated with the Eleventh’s. It may have also been too difficult at this point to create any new sonics like the 2nd Doctor

I’m guessing the tenth Doctor one will be the blue version with the same sounds as the other Doctors sonic screwdriver…there was a bit of a mix up on wave 1 with people getting different ones with different features. Then again, this time it could be passed off as the ninth Doctors

We definitely need to see a re-release of the sonic lipstick, the sonic lance is also a definite, the eighth doctor sonic would be nice to see as well, I thought of something else though, What about releasing not seen in series screwdrivers like the trans temporal and the two from the PYOS set, alas solid pieces as opposed to the mix and match options

Doctor who toys are so hard to find in America. I don’t know if its hard to find because of where I live or because its uncommon in America. The only place I could find doctor who toys is at Barnes and noble. I couldn’t even find wave 1 of the screwdrivers so I will have to order these on amazon for an extremely high price. Can I order these on forbidden planet or is it only in the uk? If so can I pay in US dollars?

Hastings branded themselves America’s “official Doctor Who retailer” or something like that a year or two ago, and their website updates their stock sporadically (no sign of the 3.75″ figures, but they do have the TARDIS!). I’ve gotten some very good deals there from time to time, and even my rural store keeps some stock on hand.

I’d change the Matt Smith sonic from your list and replace it with Chris’ because that is extremely rare to find.

    • I Froze Gallifrey

      January 15th, 2014 - 9:26pm

Chris’s is just the same as David’s with a yellow handle, so I feel I have to disagree there.

    • the astronaut of death

Wouldn’t you rather have a new variant? I for one definitely would, like I said, I have to disagree there. Plus, I’m a collector who doesn’t have Chris’s sonic, and I’d definitely prefer a new 11th doctors sonic variant, so I must disagree with both of you.

But what I’m saying is that I don’t want another 2005 Sonic Screwdriver, look at these comments and you’ll see that people are sick of the mould, I certainly am, so I must disagree with you. And astronaut of death, that’s not what Michael said at all, what he said was that Chris’s sonic is hard to find, not that it was different to David’s

Mr.Fusion, who works at CO, has confirmed this:

“The Eighth’s docs sonic has a rectangular button incorporated into the gold coloured band. The shaft of the sonic itself is fixed so doesn’t pull down.

The 11 is a new mould which means it is a fixed, closed version of the sonic. A “stunt” version if you will.”

I think the 5th would be pull down as the 3rd and 4th was that.

    • Balakin

ok, will have another look, I just think it’ll be a bit boring if it is just one solid piece

    • Balakin

      January 14th, 2014 - 6:37pm

If you look at it from a playing standpoint, yeah, it’s boring, but it’s more accurate if it works with a button. For me, the less accurate the toy is the less I want to play with it.
That said, if it was collapsible (as you can see at the beginning ot the tv movie) that would be the best, but I highly doubt it will be.
