“I think if you can get a kid reading for pleasure, not because it’s work, but actually reading for pleasure, it’s a great step forward. It can start with me, you know, start with Dicks and work its way up to Dickens – as long as you get them reading.” – Terrance Dicks

For over 50 years, Terrance Dicks was the secret beating heart(s) of Doctor Who – from joining production of The Invasion in 1968 to his final short story in 2019. As the undisputed master of Doctor Who fiction, Terrance wrote 64 Target novels from his first commission in 1973 to his last, published in 1990. He helped introduce an entire generation to the pleasures of reading and writing, and his fans include Neil Gaiman, Sarah Waters, Mark Gatiss, Alastair Reynolds, Russell T Davies, Steven Moffat, Frank-Cottrell Boyce, and Robert Webb, among many others.

This special two-volume collection, features the very best of his Doctor Who novels as chosen by fans – from his first book, The Auton Invasion, to his masterwork, the 20th anniversary celebration story The Five Doctors, voted all-time favourite.

With forewords by Frank Cottrell-Boyce and Robert Webb, The Essential Terrance Dicks is a masterclass in contemporary fiction, by a writer of unlimited imagination.

DOCTOR WHO AND THE DALEK INVASION OF EARTH
DOCTOR WHO AND THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMEN

Don’t mind the cover, bit strange they have used a still from the drama “An adventure in time and space”, these aren’t even from the doctor who series itself, let alone DIOE.

Don’t you think you are a little overboard with this comment?

They’re penguin books, they’re supposed to be like that. Google them, google ones like the penguin versions of H.G.Wells’ or even penguin editions of other books, it’s their style

Doctor what is perfectly correct. This is in keeping with penguin books house style. Covers look fine to me. I’m not buying them as I have the hardbacks of these collections and I have the original target books as well. The covers fit into penguin books style.

May be, but I still am dissapointed I mean this books are famous for the covers, there what made the books classics, uncle terrance’s simple but detailed stories coupled with the iconic covers, it’s what made the book’s legends they are….I do like the style it’s the use of stock photos I find offensive, a merger of the original Novels would work much better

“Offensive.” Really? Again a bit overboard

What is that cover all about? Utterly shocking. Have Penguin Random House BBC , lost the ability to do covers lately?

Why is this not an amalgam of Target Book Covers? Something more than this. I think the other volume is even worse.

Surprised to see these published by Penguin, but the kudos is deserved. The covers are in their house-style. They wouldn’t port over the Target covers for Rights reasons.

      Hi Richard Williams.

The Target paperbacks produced by BBC Books are published by Penguin Random House . So there wouldn’t be a problem with using a Target Style. I understand the Classics are produced in this style. But even then. It looks like some effort has gone into it. Plus the Reason for the volume is usually very prominent . Terrance Dicks is in faded light grey.

I just find them very insipid.

This is just the Penguin classics style.

As a bit of fun, you can design your own Penguin covers here!

I still think these would be much more commercial if they were listed as doctor who books!

totally agree, the don’t come up in a Doctor Who search at most retailers and even then some companies have Hardback / paperback tabs on the same listing so not away obvious
