The Claws Of Axos Special Edition DVD

The Claws Of Axos Special Edition DVD

Released on 22 October 2012.

An approaching Alien spaceship is detected on monitoring equipment at UNIT HQ, where the Brigadier is entertaining two visitors – Chinn, a civil servant making a security inspection, and Bill Filer, an American agent sent to discuss the threat of the Master. The Ship lands in England and the UNIT team, joined by Hardiman and Winser from the nearby Nuton power station, meet its occupants: beautiful golden-skinned humanoids called Axons.

The Axons claim that their ship, Axos, is damaged and that they need time in which to repair it. In return, they offer Axonite, a substance that can cause animals to grow to enormous sizes and thus end food shortages. The Doctor is suspicious, and rightly so: Axos, Axonite and the Axons – whose true appearance is hideous – are all part of a single parasitic entity brought to Earth by the Master to feed on the planet’s energy.

The Doctor manages to materialise his TARDIS, with the Master on board, at the centre of Axos. He offers to link the two ships together to make one giant time machine, on condition that Axos in return helps him to take revenge on the Time Lords for exiling him to earth. This is merely a trick, however, and Axos is locked in a time loop from which it can never escape. The Doctor returns to Earth in the TARDIS, where he reluctantly admits to the Brigadier that the Master may also have escaped.

What do you think should be the last Revisited title?
I think the Dalek Invasion of Earth l mean it is perhaps now the earliest dvd (that hasn’t been revisited) and what more can l say perhaps the best well most iconic Dalek and Hartnell Story and what more could a fan want during the 50th Anniversary that would be the perfect dvd to end 2013

It probably wont be the last revisit as dan hall mentioned at the recon event he was in talks for a possible 5th revisit. Dalek invasion of earth is an excellnt release and there is very lttle they can do to improve it. I still think something 5th doctor era is getting revisited. Russell minton mentioned on twitter about interviewing a doctor and 3 companions for a classicdw documentary. Only era that has that surviving cast members is 5th doc era so im guessing at visitation

There were a couple of issues dureing the story (some of the altered CG effects leaked into the “proper” story).

I would personally like a two doctors SE cause I havent got it yet so if they put a new DVD of that out then I will buy it. The visitation could do with some quality improvement although I wouldn’t buy it straight away because i’m not that fond of the story

      Interesting.

I have Two Doctors and I thought the biggest thing that needs improvement is the cover.

A big orange picture of a sontaran with a little image for the two Doctors isn’t good enough. If you hadn’t heard of the story before, you would have a tough time figuring out which two Doctors it was ! Their image is so small and rubbish !

The Sontarans donot even play a crucial role in the story.

And I absolutely love the Visitation, it’s one of my favourite stories ever. Must be underrated. πŸ™

What do you prefer Loose Cannon’s Reconstructions or Animation of the Missing Episodes? I prefer the Reconstructions because there utilising what footage and photos were made from the episode but that’s just my opinion.

I ask this because after watching animation of the invasion and thinking of future releases to the classic range in terms of missing episodes (The Reign of Terror)
to be honest l would buy reconstructions made by the bbc on dvd if it helped bbc considering the cost and time that animation affords.

Continuing the possible special editions debate I would like to see(in doctor order):
the aztecs, the dalek invasion of earth
    the crusade(animated eps),underwater menace(animated eps),the moonbase(animated eps),
the mind robber, the green death, ark in space,
pyramids of mars, horror of fang rock, city of death, leisure hive, the visitation, earthshock, two doctors, revelation of the daleks, ghost light, curse of fenric.
Also survival ONLY if they can be allowed to release dimensions in time (for those who want it)

Looking back at the Doctor Who dvd’s l have to get, and have already bought l’d say the only DVD’s for a Special Edition release l’d like to be are:
      – The Ark in Space
      – The Aztecs
      – The Dalek Invasion of Earth
      – Earthshock
The latest a DVD Release should be ‘revisited’ is 2005.

According to Dan Hall next year there will be four special editions. One of those is Inferno, I believe. The other three we’ll have to wait and see. DWM 453 will have some details of upcoming DVD releases in it as well.

(“four special editions”) haha maybe l’m correct then although l doubt Earth Shock would get a Special Edition. I’m waiting for an Ark in Space Special Edition as that release is perhaps the last Tom Baker if it’s after Terror of the Zygons which i’m waiting impatiently for πŸ™‚

      October 12th, 2012 - 11:06pm

Does anybody out there agree that they should re-release ‘The two doctors’as a special edition, but especially to remove ‘a fix with sontarans,in light of the news coverage of a certain monster who should never be mentioned again. I feel sorry for colin baker, janet fielding and the young boy in the sketch now.

    • gordon

      October 12th, 2012 - 11:42pm

Dont think it needs total removal just cut from when he appears.

    • THE ERGON

      October 13th, 2012 - 10:14am

I,d totally remove it. Just the assosciation puts doctor who in a bad light. Its a real shame i know, but i,m sure everyone even the young boy wouldn,t want to be reminded of this now.

    • gordon

      October 13th, 2012 - 12:14pm

To be honest i dont think it would make much difference. Even if they did a special edition and it was removed i doubt it would make much difference as the footage is out there on the original release and its available to watch online so if press or anybody wanted to make doctor who look bad by assosiation the footage is out there

    • THE ERGON

      October 13th, 2012 - 6:05pm

Well this particular person doesn,t want to own the original copy now. Yes its out there, but who with any moral standards wants to see ‘THAT’ face again. Its just the principle of the thing. Wipe it. On a more positive note, we,d have better picture quality for this particular story.

    • gordon

      October 13th, 2012 - 11:45pm

When going through the extras just dont watch it then.I dont feel 2 doctors deserves a revisit just for this reason alone. It wont be a better picture quality as its on 1″ videotape and any improvement would be minimal acording to steve roberts. They could wipe fix with sontarans but where would it end? Should they wipe over 300 episodes of top of the pops which features thousands of legendry performances just because he hosted them as well?

  • James

    September 27th, 2012 - 5:40am

Does anyone know what Special Edition dvd’s we could see in the future, l know The Ark in Space is a very high possibility as it is the last to go through the Transform Decoder (see Restoration Team website on Varos Special Edition).

But l do wish to know it would be a shame for someone to buy an original release and then get notice what will be in little over a year perhaps a special edition.

Reguarding dimensions in time JNT who produced it refered to it as cannon. It will never get released as part of the classic doctor who dvd range. Children in need who own the footage charge about 4k a minute (56 thousand in full) for usage of the footage (far too expensive on their dvd budget).Plus All actors had agreed to waver their fees and in exchange DIT will never be shown again or used for financial gain.

I would like to ask the DVD publishers just one small favour. When they call something a ‘special edition’ i wouldn’t mind if they actually spelled out what MAKES it a special edition. I mean, i have a copy i just bought recently of Claws of Axos and i might buy the SE if i knew what was special about it. I reckon the least they can do is say what makes it so special. this goes for all SEs… i mean, why is Vengeance on Varos Special either. i can’t find anything on the specs of the online stores that says about this. cheers

Its called a special edition as to not confuse some customers on what version is the newest. The special edition. The differnce between the original and special edition is the special edition has a brand new restoration and new extras (just like other companies that release special editions). And they do explain the changes between the original and special edition on the restoration team website http://www.restoration-team.co.uk/

I’m fine with Special Edition releases coming, but only if there stories from 2002 to 2005, the earliest release still perhaps to get a Special Edition is the Aztecs and then the Dalek Invasion of Earth l’m sure l’d buy alot of ‘revisitations’ but for me releases from 2005 onwards don’t really need it if all they could add is one documentary and a better cover.

Out of the early ones not yet anounced as getting rereleased up to 2005 id like
      Aztecs
      Ark in space
      two doctors
      The visitation
Green death (even though steve roberts says one currently isnt being planned)
Crusade (with animation in its own box)
Moonbase (animation and in its own box)
      Horror of fang rock
Resurection of the daleks (with cgi error fixed

      September 4th, 2012 - 7:38am

Well, Resurrection of the Daleks has already been done in the Revisitations 2 Boxset but for me l only really collect the Third and Fourth Doctor stories so the Ark in Space, The Green Death and the Horror of Fang Rock would be good πŸ™‚

    • James

      September 4th, 2012 - 12:41pm

Ahh right, l’m not to fussed with Dalek stories since l have the Davros Boxset, it would be awesome if they did something similar with the Cybermen containing the Tenth Planet and the Moon Base aswell as all the other Cybermen stories although they did make the Revenge/Silver Nemesis Boxset l doubt the bbc would bother :/

    • gordon

      September 5th, 2012 - 11:21am

Now that would be something that would be worth getting. Release it when 10th planet comes out Gives them a chance to do a revist of moonbase with animation and maybe do something with wheel in space as well and then release moonbase se and wheel in space seperatly a couple of years down the line ala the remembrance se. With the bumped up price of the box set (it would be 11 discs so the price would be bumped up ) animation should be affordable on at least moonbase and possibly wheel but then again we dont know how much thetamation are charging

    • dr who 1999

      September 5th, 2012 - 2:42pm

what about CROSGROVE HALL, the same team that animated “The invasion”, they might charge less

    • gordon

      September 5th, 2012 - 3:16pm

went bust in 2009. Plus i believe the reason why they choose thetamation was is its a cheaper way form of animation. Even though cheaper it will through thetamation it will still be expensive

    • dr who 1999

      September 5th, 2012 - 4:18pm

what about big finish, they are working with thetamation to animate the reign of terror, is there a possibility they could do it on there own ( if they don’t charge more )

    • gordon

      September 5th, 2012 - 5:07pm

I think Big finish involvement with reign is mostlty to do with funding (they are cofunding with bbcww) more than animation

    • dr who 1999

in that case, thetamation is probably the best candidate to go to then.

Stuart Humphryes has colourised the key frames of half the episode’s shots as of a few days ago. He hasn’t said how long he has been working on it exactly but he did complete some shots around Christmas last year. It will most likely be completed by late next year.

    • gordon

      August 30th, 2012 - 11:43pm

I think he will be finished some point early next year. Even though i believe he has been doing it since late last year he took about 3 to 4 months off to do something for the deleted zygons scene for that dvd. When you take into consideration in july 10th he mentioned he was about 125 days work into it. Add 40 days when he said he reached half way (165) then add that on into the future i get late february id estimate

i mean reign of terror had just 2 episodes missing an that took them nearly 2 years to do.

As dan hall mentioned back in february that the dvd range will possibly not end november 2013 dont think having it out by november 2013 should be an issue. Finding cheaper ways to animate could be a reason along with revisitation releases being popular. Heard recently that the animation process works like a production line so that 1 team works on 1 thing then another team works on another bit. For example its possible that design team finishes with reign then goes to the layout team and at that time the design team starts work on the next story

and it follows on. It may take a year but with working like this they can work on a couple of storys at a time. If the sales are healthy enough they can hopefully pay thetamation more money to employ more people and they can work faster. If sales are healthy enough i can certainly see a possibily that the range could continue maybe 3-4 releases a year

that could work, then they could start animating more episodes ( like marco polo for example ) they could have the potential.

BooBoo I have found two errors on the List for Classic Doctor Who DVDs.

1.) On Released DVDs Shada appears
2.) On Cyberman Story DVDs Mara Tales Box Set appears

Thanks, I’ve updated that. It should have been Horns of Nimon that’s been released instead of Shada so I’ve swapped those around

Well this year (I think) has been a good year for the doctor who DVDs. We’ve gotten a range of stories, the only doctor we won’t be getting is 5, unless the visitation is quickly put on the schedule (I don’t think that will happen)

Bit off topic but are 2Entertain still doing the Doctor Who DVD releases? I haven’t noticed their logo on the side of the DVD cases, let alone anywhere! When I got Death to the Daleks about a month ago their wasn’t any mention to 2Entertain either! Normally it’s a quick add for their company that just has their name and some flashing lights and wierd music. What has happend to them Booboo?!

2entertain Ltd has been full integrated into BBC Worldwide’s Consumer Products division. Esentially the company has been restructured. There isnt any real diference with the people working on apart from less non skipable opening logos and less logos on the cover. Most folk refer to it as bbc worldwide or bbcww now. In the uk you can still get the 2e logo as its available on the reversable cover which doesnt have the god awful purple bbc logo

    • John Smith

      August 16th, 2012 - 11:09pm

What’s so wrong about the purple BBC logo?

    • Gordon

Its an eyesore and it doesnt match up with the older black bbc logo

    • the TARDIS

      August 28th, 2012 - 8:32pm

Why is it such an eyesore? I think it’s nicer than the boring white one. And anyway, the first few releases had the BBFC rating on the side, the early 2|Entertain ones had a black logo, then a white one. Then the white rectangle at the bottom of the DVD case disappeared. Colony in Space and Day of the Daleks had the Irish clasification on the side. They hardly all match up so changing the BBC logo is not a huge change.

    • Gordon

      August 28th, 2012 - 9:53pm

Its an eyesore because it really stands out in a bad way as its far too colourful. And the change from white to purple is far too drastic compared with the 2e logo which is black and white. As for the bbfc logo the only ones still got them are ark in space and lost in time and ark is most likely getting the special edition treatment next year. As i always reverse the covers the irish logos and the missing 2e logos dont bother me as the reverse cover doent have the irish rating and has the 2e logo so that my colllection mostly matches up

Axos SE extras passed through the bbfc or at least some of them:

00:26:58:04 DOCTOR WHO – THE VAMPIRE FROM SPACE – EPISODE ONE
00:10:08:11 REVERSE STANDARDS CONVERSION – THE AXON LEGACY
00:26:38:17 AXON STATIONS! – MAKING THE CLAWS OF AXOS
01:12:50:00 DOCTOR WHO – THE VAMPIRE FROM SPACE – EPISODE ONE

Its because 1 of them is the full version of the behind the scenes studio recording and the other one is the edited version that appeared on the original dvd

Its because restoration techniques have improved especially on eps 2 and 3 as they were ntsc beatamax copies. They can get much better results in those eps plus it gets a making of and other extra goodies
