set-13

ut

Its that time of year again with SDCC 2016 about to start

Wednesday saw previews night between 6-9 pm, that’s 2-5am in the morning for people in the UK.

From what we can see nothing new was on show.

It starts on Thursday at 9.30am which is 5.30pm in the UK so no late night waiting for any information.

If anything is on show it should soon become clear.

The only Doctor Who items we know of so far are the 2 Titans, Ghost 12th Doctor and Glitter Tardis, Titan Comics, an electronic 20 questions Tardis, 5.5 “x 7” giant mug and Rory’s Story Cubes.

This year we have noticed the “exclusive” title has been dropped in many cases and replaced with “first to market” which means it is only sold there first.

I suspect all eyes (where Doctor Who is concerned) will be on the Underground Toys Stand where, assuming its on show, something “big” is coming (and no its not the mug)…

They could’ve done a 10th Doctor figure with his costume from Silence in the library. I really liked the black shirt, purple tie look. Or a maroon coloured velvet coat 12th Doctor. However I don’t know if a recolour for that would be accurate.

Am I correct in thinking that the versions of the tenth and eleventh doctors are the same as in the last boxset?

10 has white shirt instead of blue.
Apparently, 11 has new paint apps, but don’t quote me on that.

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 22nd, 2016 - 1:58pm

11 is more accurate to Series 5. Apparently he is essentially the fez figure without the fez.

    • koloth

      July 22nd, 2016 - 2:28pm

They could have added glasses to the 10th. That’s one of the two variants missing.

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 22nd, 2016 - 2:39pm

I would have preferred an End of Time Ten with no cuts, but that’s just personal preference.

    • TheDarkAndTheLight

      July 22nd, 2016 - 3:23pm

Yes, this Eleven has the ‘fez and mop’ variant colour scheme, but the Mackenzie two-by-two dogtooth (checked tweed) jacket sculpt, rather than the Donegal (flecked tweed) jacket sculpt exclusive to the ‘fez and mop’ variant.

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 22nd, 2016 - 3:31pm

Basically it’s the original 11 in tweed figure repainted to look like the 11 with Fez figure without the fez.

    • TheDarkAndTheLight

      July 22nd, 2016 - 3:32pm

It always confused me that they used the Mackenzie ‘checked’ tweed sculpt as the main one, when the onscreen jacket only appeared in Victory of the Daleks, The Time of Angels, & Flesh and Stone, while the Donegal ‘flecked’ tweed appeared in every single other episode of Series 5. It was just a happy coincidence for Characters Options that the new jacket Matt wore throughout Series 6 and 7A happened to be Shetland tweed (a different type of checked tweed), allowing them to continue to use their favoured jacket sculpt for their Eleven figures.

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 22nd, 2016 - 3:56pm

To be honest, I never really saw any difference in Series 5, it shows how much I pay attention to it.

I hope this isn’t a silly question, but what story is that 1st Doctor costume from? And where has the inspiration for the War Doctor come from?

The Web Planet. War is supposed to be from Day of the Doctor, but with darker colour tones.

    • Omega63

      July 22nd, 2016 - 1:25pm

War looks like a mid-point between the Young War Doctor and the older one we see in Day in my opinion. Darker hair and beard, darker jacket makes it appear new. I see this as a middle in the Time War sort of figure

This set is really cool, we’re getting some really nice figures, but IMO, it feels to me like they’re not putting their all into it. Some of these are revamps of already released figures, when this could have been a wonderful opportunity to release some never before seen stuff. For the fourth doctor, you could have had the costume from terror of the zygons, for the 5th doctor, you could have had him jacketless, 7th doctor from the TV movie, 10th doctor as John Smith, 11 in his green coat and Stetson, 12 in his red velvet coat with waistcoat and revised head sculpt. But the biggest issue I have is why the hell does 3 not come with his purple Inverness cape, I’ve been waiting to see it

      July 22nd, 2016 - 11:43am

the original release of this was to include the 4th doctor from terror, fur coated trougton, hurndall doctor all of which would have taken considerable new investment in tooling but retailers did not want it

they are probably having to make considerably less of these so compromises would have to made using existing tooling to keep the price right

    • Ian

      July 22nd, 2016 - 12:57pm

I heard it was CO not retailers that cancelled the set with 4th from Terror of the zygons.

    • booboo

      July 22nd, 2016 - 12:59pm

that’s because there was not enough interest, in fact i think they pitched it twice because one was on show in 2013 along with those iconic moment sets nones of which happened

    • TheDarkAndTheLight

      July 22nd, 2016 - 1:16pm

Any idea what the iconic moment sets were planned to be, booboo? I’m intrigued, as the title alone makes them sound amazing, but this is the first I’m ever hearing of them.

    • booboo

      July 22nd, 2016 - 1:23pm

they were a figure with a card background, Like the Cyberman with St Pauls, there was a Sontaran and 4th doctor , nothing was set in stone at the time but they never got off the ground

    • TheDarkAndTheLight

      July 22nd, 2016 - 3:16pm

It’s a shame they never materialized – I personally wouldn’t have been too bothered about the cardboard backdrops, but it would have been a great opportunity to pick up some of the older released classic figures I missed out on.

id love to see a big finish doctor collectors series with figures of each doctor from a particular audio story although that might be hard for a few doctors

They might not have the copyright to make the characters and doctors from big finish

    • Omega63

      July 22nd, 2016 - 12:38pm

They clearly have some sort of agreement, after all Reel Time and other Big Finish covers feature the Sixth Doctor we see in this set. However, I believe Reel Time was simply a video cast free thing so there may be overlapping of deals which allowed that particular one to happen.

  • Savethecoffeeboysavetheworld

Are 5, 7, 10 and 11 the same as they were in the 11 doctors set

    Reply
    • TheDarkAndTheLight

      July 22nd, 2016 - 11:48am

No – Five has a new trouser design and dirtier trainers, Seven has his TV Movie tartan trousers, as well as coming with a TV Movie sonic screwdriver, Ten has a white shirt for the first time in figure form, and Eleven has a screen accurate Series 5 colour scheme for the first time ever in this variant (including lighter tweed and grey trousers), only ever seen before on The Big Bang ‘fez and mop’ variant. These are just the main changes, but there are smaller paint differences in all of the figures in the new set.

    • TARDISGuy

      July 22nd, 2016 - 11:53am

5th Doctor would be different even without the new paint apps as the one in the 11 Doctors set was the Season 19-20 red shirt costume, whereas this is the Season 21 green shirt one

One thing that is a bit annoying is that they ‘re-release the rarer figures I already have the 6th doctor real time, night of the Doctor 8th doctor and war doctor. Bringing this out makes it lose its rarity. I have these in its packaging(like I do with all my figures).they did this with the 3.75 dalek sec I found it in its original wave 1packaging but then it came out in the ‘into the dalek’ set. I have spent a lot of money on some of these figures and then they release them a few years later.I don’t see the point of having rare figures when they must’ve-release them.

I guess it’s good for the people who didn’t manage to get them.

    Does anyone agree

No not at all! I need all of those figures

    • TARDISGuy

      July 22nd, 2016 - 7:26am

None of the figures in this set are exactly the same as previous releases. The 6th has many more different shades of blue compared to the Real Time one, the 8th is post-crash on Karn, so has scars and battered clothes and the War, by the looks of it, has a whole new, or close to, new paint job, with darker colours and sharper details. So strictly speaking, these aren’t “re-relases” as such more “re-vamped”.

    • TARDISGuy

      July 22nd, 2016 - 7:30am

They have done it before. I’m thinking specifically of the D84 Robot figure that was re-released last year after several years of rarity. So it has happened (and I dare say will happen again), it just technically hasn’t happened here. The three figures you mentioned would look noticeably different to their earlier counterparts, so I don’t think the value of the originals should be dented much, if at all. Especially if, as you’ve said, they’re still in their packagings

    • Number 6

      July 22nd, 2016 - 7:53am

I agree with you TARDISGUY, that the release of the 13 Doctors are being revamped but the people who will likely to distribute them and they have make sure it is completely different from the previous ones, except the War/Twelfth Doctor.

Still, they look really great and I do like the Third Doctor’s outfit. It’s brilliant. Thought I do not really like the Eight Doctor in his Time War outfit, it should have been in his normal outfit. Would have been looked nicer.

Matt Smith (aka 11th Dr Who) outfit is the same as the previous one, I would prefer the outfit he worn on Series 7b, with Clara.

But to the rest of the Doctor, they look great. Hope they might release, unless Character Online gives a second thought!

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 22nd, 2016 - 9:23am

I’m going to make this loud and clear as many others have said.

THE SIXTH DOCTOR IS NOT FROM REAL TIME IT IS FROM THE AUDIO SERIES, WHICH IT IS ACCURATE TO AND THE REAL TIME FIGURE THAT ALREADY EXISTS IS ACCURATE TO REAL TIME.

    • TARDISGuy

      July 22nd, 2016 - 9:43am

We know it’s not from Real Time but because both it and this new figure share a blue theme, they’re going to be compared, whether unfairly or not.

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 22nd, 2016 - 9:49am

It’s like saying that if we had an Attack of the Cybermen Sixth Doctor figure and then they brought out a version from Trial of a Timelord, people would say that it’s been done before because all they’ve done is change the waistcoat design.

    • TARDISGuy

      July 22nd, 2016 - 10:07am

Well, that did happen when the 11 Doctors set was put out (the Terror of the Vervoids is just a repaint original 6th Doctor). I’m not saying I agree with the comparison (because clearly the two figures are different and serve the on screen, or on-cover as it were, costumes they represent), all I’m saying is that people are going to compare them regardless.

    • Grant

      July 22nd, 2016 - 11:48am

I understand the problem with rarity but as far as I’m concerned it’s brilliant. I really don’t care about the people who already own the figures and are annoyed that they’re no longer worth as much due to a re-release. I care more about myself and other fans who haven’t had the chance to own certain figures, usually due to scalping more than rarity. I have some “rare” figures still in packaging that have been re-released and I’m not bothered that they’ve dropped in value because it means more fans who maybe don’t have a lot of money get the chance to own something they once couldn’t. I think it’s selfish to say; “I don’t want other fans to own this as I own it and want it to still be worth a lot of money”. Were all in the same fandom, we should be happy that fans get a second chance at owning an awesome figure/figures. Plus rarity in these figures often comes from selfish tw*ts who buy 4 or 5 if each set, making it harder for other fans to get. Just like the current B&M sets that scalpers are sticking up on eBay, which is pathetic. Bring on more rare re-releases!

I love it. I want it. I need it.
So, yes, I could complain about 12 not being the white shirt/cardigan costume, or about 11 not having the Series 6 green coat, or about 10 not having the new head sculpt, or about 4 not having a hat, or about 2 not being the stovepipe hat version or the fur coat version, (all complaints I have seen in various places) but, quite honestly, none of that really bothers me. The 12, 11 and 10 variants mentioned above won’t ever be released (probably). But even if they were, this set rocks. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 9th Doctor variants are great and the new paint apps on 4th, 5th and War Doctors particularly, look really good.
I know several people who missed out on the 11 Doctors set, as well as the Resurrection 5th Doctor, Real Time 6th Doctor and NOTD 8th Doctor, so they’ll be wanting this set ASAP. I’ll be buying if/when I can. Love it.

Its a shame though, waiting all this time for a war doctor rerelease, and we don’t get the moment.
