ut

Its that time of year again with SDCC 2016 about to start

Wednesday saw previews night between 6-9 pm, that’s 2-5am in the morning for people in the UK.

From what we can see nothing new was on show.

It starts on Thursday at 9.30am which is 5.30pm in the UK so no late night waiting for any information.

If anything is on show it should soon become clear.

The only Doctor Who items we know of so far are the 2 Titans, Ghost 12th Doctor and Glitter Tardis, Titan Comics, an electronic 20 questions Tardis, 5.5 “x 7” giant mug and Rory’s Story Cubes.

This year we have noticed the “exclusive” title has been dropped in many cases and replaced with “first to market” which means it is only sold there first.

I suspect all eyes (where Doctor Who is concerned) will be on the Underground Toys Stand where, assuming its on show, something “big” is coming (and no its not the mug)…

cant see why that’s even an issue, toy / model shops are full of items to do with the military

If there really was an issue with that sort of thing the BBC would never have allowed it in the original script for The Magician’s Apprentice.

And considering that the whole immigrant undertones to the Zygon two parter were allowed

There’s a difference between a show exploring an issue and what is in reality a child’s play thing (regardless of collector’s value).

Did we hear anything on previews night last year and who exactly is at preview night? I’d assume very specific people because I would have thought that if anything was there and people had saw it, stuff would have gotten out.

mostly press and people who run news sites (like this one)

They tend to head for the “big” stands first and 3 hours is not long as there are 100’s of exhibitors

it opens at 5.30 so buy early evening we should know if anything new is put on show today

I’m not trying to be rude or anything, but I’m genuinely curious; why do people think that the ‘big’ thing is a 12th Doctor and tank? It’s just I think the tank is a bit random and a lot of money to sculpt, a lot more than just a figure (or is there already an existing sculpt from another range?).

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:01pm

It’s not really a lot of money, the tank can easily be root ask which would make it really cheap or a previous HM Armed forces mould could be reused, that packaged with a wanted 12 variant could sell pretty decently. I don’t personally want it, I’d rather have just the 12 figure but I’d be happy enough if we got anything.

    • booboo

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:04pm

does any one know if the any of the HM armed forces tanks were the same as in Doctor Who? not up my tanks

    • booboo

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:01pm

nothing more than just speculation, but them sometimes you have to put the collector to one side and think toy market and casual buyer.

The core collector market is not enough to support this range on its own.

    • Starlord

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:01pm

Yeah I agree and mentioned that in my comment, I think that it’d be a bit of crazy idea to give us a tank before a Tardis interior! Especially when taking into consideration how much it’d cost.

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:11pm

I think that a kid is more likely going to want a tank packed with a 12 figure than a Tardis interior, plus parents would be more willing to buy a tank as it would be cheaper than a Tardis interior and take up less space, I think a tank set could sell quite well, from a marketing point of view.

    • Starlord

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:19pm

You honestly think that a child/parent would be more willing to buy a tank as oppose to the Tardis? I think that makes no sense at all. Why would anyone prefer a tank, that was in one episode, over the Tardis… something that is in pretty much every episode of the show??

    • 100000BC

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:22pm

I’m not sure that my parents would have wanted me to have a tank toy when i was younger… Marketed and packaged correctly, a TARDIS interior could sell well. I always thought a collect-and-build version might do well as you could choose whether to collect the whole range and build a big accurate TARDIS (collectors) or get a couple of figures and build a mini-TARDIS set (average passing kid)

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:24pm

A tank has more play quality, and something like a rotocast tank won’t be a delicate or fiddly as a whole Tardis console too. i can guarantee that children will be far more interested in playing out action sequences involving the Doctor in a tank running over the bad guy than standing in room that does little more than add scenery and look pretty.

    • Starlord

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:28pm

I like the Idea of that! I think that we need a new electronic Tardis, especially if there was a way to swap between the orange and blue colour setting for an 11th/12th interior set.
They could also do a pretty simple War Doctor interior by just modifying the 9th/10th interior, would anyone else be willing to buy that??

    • Starlord

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:31pm

Also, Still not thinking the tank would sell anywhere near as well as the Tardis would and I would argue that even children would know that a Tardis Interior is a better accessory for a Doctor figure, instead of a tank… personally, I don’t think it’d sell well at all.

    • booboo

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:37pm

many retailers work on price and available margins

I can see a rotocast tank, 12th Doctor and Guitar going for say £29.99, an electronic console room would probably be £60+ now and toys r us would have to commit to buying many more consoles than tanks to claw back the massive development costs

that may be just to much to stomach at the moment

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:36pm

I don’t think either would sell particularly well, I think anything Doctor Who is going to peg warm but I can guarantee that a Tardis interior would be overpriced (if a curator figure and a painting is £30, how much do you think a Tardis interior will be?) and only the collectors will buy it, I think that the reason we haven’t gotten a Tardis interior is because it isn’t feasible. The last one we got had card walls and everyone says it’s awful, it would be even more difficult to make one now. I’m not against the idea of a Tardis interior but I don’t think it is feasible for them to make decently and sell them.

    • Starlord

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:47pm

Hmm, I guess put like that, it might not be the best idea.. What if an interior was made and sold as an exclusive to one store, such as Forbidden Planet, and aim it at the collectors? Then you could charge a relatively large amount (£60-75) but for a quality sculpt and working electronics?

I still would like anything other than the tank… I’d rather have 2-3 more figures instead of the tank.

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:51pm

The thing is, the Impossible set, the TOTD set and the Curator set are all still on FP, the more expensive sets don’t really sell out as well as say, the individual figures, maybe if it was a limited production. I honestly think that a classic console would be cheaper to make and would sell like hot cakes to the collectors, but I think it’s all too much of a risk for CO to do any of that.

    • TravellingTimeLord

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:59pm

I agree with DoctorSong regarding your last comment. A classic console room would sell like hot cakes considering it’s such an iconic set and would also be slightly cheaper maybe if it had perhaps a moving time rotor? It would also pass as a S9 new addition to considering it was in Hell Bent which targets both new and old audiences which would be very clever.

    • booboo

      July 21st, 2016 - 2:23pm

it was said some time ago I seem to remember that it would take 40,000 units for a classic console to become viable because of the huge development costs if you were going to do it “probably”, I dont know if that still stands but that’s a big ask

People were not happy when the lights and sound were left of the last console because it was to costly and that was £50 then, we also know new series stuff far outsells anything classic

but for the record I would much prefer a console room to a tank, its all about the numbers and if they add up

its probably something no one has even thought of!

    • Starlord

      July 21st, 2016 - 2:09pm

The other thing they could do is only make a console but make it a “Build-a-Figure” Type thing, like the pandorica? That way, if the line sells, they could do a range of different waves with different consoles?

    • 100000BC

      July 21st, 2016 - 3:32pm

@Starlord – that’s exactly what i was thinking. I wouldn’t mind it being non-electronic or they could release a separate electronic console and the rest of the TARDIS interior as collect-and-build with a range of figures.

  • Starlord

    July 21st, 2016 - 12:46pm

I think we’ll see something pretty spectacular soon, whether it be at con or not. I would expect the “Big” item to be either:

    1. New Tardis interior (With lights and sounds)
    2. Updated 13 Doctors set with updated figures with new articulation
    3. A wave of 6-8 figures (12th Doctor with hoodie, Clara, Osgood.. etc)

Thats just my thoughts/hopes… I don’t like the idea of it being The 12th Doctor and the tank. I would be very surprised if that was the case, especially if they were prepared to spend that much money to make a to scale tank but not a new Tardis interior.. to me, that just wouldn’t have made sense.

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:08pm

Someone said that they didn’t think Osgood would be made as she would be considered too minor, but I think that contrary to belief, CO and UT do want to give us what we want but as long as it’s something that they can sell well and isn’t to expensive to produce. Before they were released, the most consistently asked for figures apart from anything Classic were 12, Missy and NOTD 8, before that it was Clara, the War Doctor and Series 7B 11. I think that we do eventually get the figures that appear over and over again on everyone’s list, which is why I think that Osgood is likely as she consistently seems to appear on almost everyone’s wish list along with red velvet 12 and hoodie 12.

    • booboo

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:11pm

Osgood was scanned, but then so are most of the cast for possible future use

she is high up on many peoples lists and variants are possible, still not sure that would be enough at this time

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:15pm

I heard she was scanned but people said it could be for anything and because there is going to be an Osgood Titan, I thought maybe that is why. I think Osgood has potential, I can see people buying more than one so that they can have the Osgood twins, then a further variant would be released later so they end up with a plethora of Osgoods

    • Starlord

      July 21st, 2016 - 1:24pm

I think that Osgood would sell personally! I’d quite like a Zygon Invasion pack with kate, Osgood and a new Clara.. I think that would be a pretty good sell with collectors.

Looking forward to see what the “big” thing is. Unless it was just rorys story cubes. Seriously why can’t CO release figures more often? Star Wars The Black Series DC Multiverse and Mavel Legends release figures ALL the time. And CO can’t be botherd to even release one.

    • booboo

      July 21st, 2016 - 9:57am

they would release them more often if retailers ordered that way but the dont

All the big retailers (and many small ones) do their ordering from set budgets for the next financial year in January (thats why the toys fair is held then)

Whatever toys r us are getting and the B&M sets would have been decided back then, but it can take 6 months or so from start to finish to produce these figures and Character will deliver to those retailers when they want them, nearer the Christmas market in some cases.

Doctor Who is tiny compared to those major franchises and they would out sell doctor who figures 100 times over

    • Ian

      July 21st, 2016 - 10:51am

CO don’t market their figures. I Think they rely on fans. Another problem I feel is when new stuff comes out its so hard to track them down. I know Al Dewar admitted this

    • 100000BC

      July 21st, 2016 - 11:28am

Ian that is my main problem – I’m just about to move to a city with a TRU, a B&M and a Forbidden Planet so I’m pretty pleased with myself. It’s so difficult to track anything down in time from my current home and I have a great backlist of things I would have bought given the chance.

Marvel Legends use the same body moulds with new heads most of the time, making it easier to release often. With Doctor Who it’s usually new sculpts which bring in the money.

    • 100000BC

      July 21st, 2016 - 12:26pm

  • T4RD1S

    July 21st, 2016 - 9:29am

I think it’ll be just one figure, or possibly more, but not a lot, not as much as last year, since Doctor Who isn’t on air. I’m not certain, but I am certain there will be something. I think there will be some other stuff aswell, maybe a few Titan comics and vinyl figures, probably some mugs, some novelty items and I’m also hoping for some LEGO stuff, I also thought there were going to be some B&M sets since there were last time but because there were a few released very recently, it’s unlikely, but you never know, it might be the next set of B&M sets.

what we dont know is if its one “huge” item or several items in “huge” Box either way would take up a shelf

B&M sets are done for this year so I dont expect anything on show for these unless UT are selling the other 2 themselves (we know the 3rd set is exclusive so probably wont be on show)

bearing in mind whatever this is is probably going to end up on toys r us shelves I’m going with the Tank

A Rassilon from Hell Bent would be good, they’d just need a new head mould

His costume is a lot different, in fact it’s nothing like the End of Time one and is significantly different from the Timelord figure’s costume. It’d have to be a new sculpt.

Yeah but look what they did with Clara. As long as it looks something like rassilon, its sellable…

      July 20th, 2016 - 10:30pm

It would be pointless to make a new head and not a new body, in fact it’d probably be cheaper for them to create a whole new figure than if they were to mix and match old parts with a brand new sculpt.

I think it will be revealed in like those leaked images like we had last year for the first set of Collectors Series (aka the 12th Doctor Figure and The Curator)

But the fact that their were leaked images may make UT resistant to actually showing anything like the figurea….

      July 20th, 2016 - 8:31pm

they weren’t leaked as such, you just weren’t supposed to take photos

its a public event, not a trade event, so its rather strange to have stuff on display you dont want the public to know about

you cant stop people from talking

at the toy fair which is trade, if you are shown / told about stuff that is not for the public consumption yet you dont talk about it – at all

You are right booboo, if you don’t want people to know about it or see it, keep it quiet especially with big names like Doctor Who.

Thats what i ment booboo “You weren’t supposed to take photos” so i think that will happen again

    • booboo

      July 20th, 2016 - 10:06pm

your could still see the boxes in UT own image of the stand though and in other “innocent” pictures

you can’t leek something that’s on public display

it all got rather silly after that with official photos described as bootleg and what was clearly a 5.5″ figure passed off as a 3.75″ figure

i remember and saw it all

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 20th, 2016 - 10:10pm

Ah yes, that happened with the NOTD 8th Doctor, it was leaked by whona as it had been solicited to them and when questioned, CO stated it was clearly 3.75″ even though it was obviously 5.5″ due to the apparent joints that weren’t present on the 3.75″ version.

      July 20th, 2016 - 10:14pm

      yes that’s exactly what happened

When looking at if it is more likely or more unlikely we will be seeing some new Doctor Who figures I’m not too sure.

On one hand last year the figures sold incredibly well (they were at the top of the FP selling list for weeks) – So it wouldn’t surprise me if UT wanted to continue with the collectors series and show them off and promote them like they did last year. Plus we already know we are getting stuff towards the end of the year so this may tell us they are following the same schedule as last year – with the first announcements at SDCC with the UT stand and a release around October/December

But on the other hand there was nothing at the toy fair and this was obviously for good reasons so this may also apply to UT at SDCC. last year UT were also not too keen on images of the figures getting out – but as we know they did – so this may make them resistant to showing their figures at SDCC.

the toy fair is a trade fair to show what products you intend to market that year and to get orders from all retailers.

as the figures are now mostly exclusive they would not have been on show there anyway.

I can tell you also for a fact the new sonic was there but was only shown behind closed doors so we dont know if anything else could have been shown for the wider market

Toys r us do have more items coming later in the year we know.

I think people are expecting way too much from this. I’m only expecting the “big” item, some series 9 12th Doctors and maybe Osgood or some monsters. Just those would make me very happy.

You do realise that, you are expecting a lot? I’m literally only expecting the big item, a red velvet 12 (repaint) and if we are ever so lucky, some series 9 12s, I know it sounds ridiculous to say that you are expecting a lot and I would love all those, an Osgood especially, I think that with our situation, we really aren’t going to get much if anything.

i think most people realise though, that 2-3 new figures help to sell old ones

    • booboo

      July 20th, 2016 - 7:55pm

I think if it were anything big there would be much more of a major announcement, people seem to be saying nothing will be on show anyway
we will just have to see

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 20th, 2016 - 7:56pm

Did we have a major announcement last year? I don’t recall it, I know there were leaks beforehand and then pictures turned up when people saw the display but I’m pretty sure we didn’t get any decent pictures or an actually announcement until about a week later.

    • booboo

      July 20th, 2016 - 8:01pm

no, we did when toys r us were due the stock, and Missy of course

if its something as big as a console eg i would have thought they would have wanted to make something of it, perhaps not

      July 20th, 2016 - 8:00pm

they launched the collector series last year

    • booboo

      July 20th, 2016 - 8:03pm

yes but photos weren’t allowed so it was really difficult to get any accoutre info

      July 20th, 2016 - 8:01pm

So is something still going to be announced at 2am or whatever, or is the mug literally it?

    • booboo

      July 20th, 2016 - 8:04pm

forget the mug, the 2am thing is when the doors open for preview night so info on anything on shown might start filtering through

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 20th, 2016 - 8:06pm

The mug thing has brought my hopes down, even though I know it was a coincidence, I’m glad that my hopes are down now, so that I don’t get overly disappointed if there’s nothing later.

      July 20th, 2016 - 8:12pm

So there’s still hope! Not expecting much but you never know! ☺

Maybe I am expecting too much, at least my hopes are down. I think what I said before is probably what we will get in the Long term.

I think seriously badly need a new ace or another companion like a repaint of Sarah Jane from planet of spiders
