The Unofficial Dr Who Annual 1997

Available to order from www.lulu.com

We’re going back to the beginning of the Eighth Doctor’s journey – back to 1996!

Join the Eighth Doctor and his companions Stacy and Ssard, for a whole new set of adventures that take them to far off planets, where they encounter villains, aliens, shape shifting sand, dangerous doppelgangers, pit their wits against the Tardis’ built in self-defense systems. And visit 1950’s India-while they go shopping for tea? Wait – What?

The annual features the usual mix of great stories, puzzles and features, as well as an afterword by Stacy and Ssard’s creator, Gary Russell. And an afterword by the original artist of the Radio Times comic strips, Lee Sullivan.

With the kind permission of Gary Russell, the original Tardis crew of the Eighth Doctor – Stacy Townsend and Ice Warrior Ssard, appear as the resident companions throughout the annual. (Stacy and Ssard originally appeared in the weekly Radio Times comic strip which ran from June 1996 to March 1997).

The annual comes in at an impressive 177 pages, and is a not-for-profit publication, and none of the money paid by purchasers goes to the publisher or to any of the contributors.

The unofficial Dr Who 1997 annual can be ordered Here.

The 1997 annual not only has one cover, but three to choose from. As well as the main cover with artwork from Mark Worgan, there are two more additional collectors covers from artists Kris Merola, and Carolyn Edwards.

These two collectors covers are only available to those who donate to the charity ‘Refuge’. Detailed information on how to obtain those collectors cover can be found on the Terraqueous Distributors Facebook Page. or from the PDF File Here

I’m halfway in, and I can confidently say this is the best annual yet. So professionally put together.

The stories I’ve read so far are, esuig dis (it’s traditional to jump straight to the comic strip.), Infestation, edge of oblivion, aggedorable, and dark infusions.

All great stories, Dark Infusions is my favourite so far.

This is a top notch book, well done to everyone involved.
These guys know what the fans want.

The writer of Dark Infusions, Phillip Hawkins, runs a great Youtube channel.

Ha! I jump straight to the comics first. This one was by me, mind – so I couldn’t! Glad you enjoyed it. Was great fun writing a celebrity historical, especially adding in all the easter eggs.

Finished the book now. Very good. Only one story I wasn’t keen on but the rest were all good. Great art and design. Wonder what the next one is…

What were the highlights, and what was the one you weren’t keen on?

Aggedorables was the one I found hard to get through. Enjoyed all of the others. Shiver, the two eye of harmony stories (don’t want to say to much, yes it was odd to have two stories essentially telling the same story but both were good, spoilers though so no more info than that. Night at the opera was fun. The annual was great

Used to be around 7 days but since covid it’s up to anywhere between 10 and 15 days. Mine isn’t due to arrive until the 12th, hopefully it will come before then though

If it’s anything like mine you’ll get the books before the notification they’ve shipped…!

      June 6th, 2023 - 1:56pm

Yes, I’ve noticed over the last few months lulu have stopped sending shipping notifications. I checked the status an hour ago and it was still in production. Frustrating as I want to read this as soon as it arrives!

It’s still very early days yet.

I think it’s likely lulu have been overwhelmed with orders.

I thought the comic strip was really good.

Thanks Loui, it’s a story I’ve had in my head for a long while. Two of my favourite things from childhood combine together (no spoilers)! Ness’ art on it is definitely a highlight of the book.

I just finished the script for another… You’ll have to ‘watch’ out for that one!

I’m really chuffed to have been able to contribute a number of illustrations for this!
(Even more chuffed that some of my illustrations are in the main promo-image!) 🙂

      May 30th, 2023 - 4:19pm

Ah, I see. I thought the 1st photo, Top left, looked the same cover as the Exclusive one below. (So I was wondering what the Standard Cover was like).

    • booboo

      May 30th, 2023 - 4:24pm

the (standard) top left is more photoish and the (similar) bottom right exclusive is more artistic

    • Anonymous.

      May 30th, 2023 - 4:36pm

Yes, on second Glance the Cover is different. At first glance I thought it was the same cover.

    • Joe 90

      May 30th, 2023 - 6:22pm

There is a slight difference between the 2 similar covers.

Apart from the portraits being different (cartoonish v photo artist) the 3 figures at the bottom of the cover are slightly different.

On the normal cover Ssard is wearing a brown cloak and the rock formation is slightly different

On the variant cover there is no cloak/different rock formation.

I’ve ordered the Carolyn Edwards cover.

Has anyone else had any issues with not receiving an email confirmation from Refuge this morning.

I thought there was an issue so tried donating a 2nd time and it appears my Bank have taken both payments but I still haven’t received any email confirmations for either payment.
